• How to install an older version of Java

  I updated my installation of the sun-java6-jdk package today to version 6.24-1build0.10.10.1 after being prompted by the update manager. However this now causes some compilation failures so I'd like to revert back to the previous version that I had installed. I've tried using Synaptic but the 'Force Version' menu command is disabled. I've tried the following command to install the previous version sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk=6.22-0ubuntu1~10.10 But I'm not sure that I have the correct version: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Version ‘6.22-0ubuntu1~10.10’ for ‘sun-java6-jdk’ was not found I've taken this version number from this changelog: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sun-java6/+changelog Is this the correct way to install a previous version of a package? • Get Creative soundcard working correctly

  I am trying to get sound going on my fresh install of 10.10. I have a creative fatlity branded sound card. My ALSA information. Most things seems to be working out of the box, once I turned off my onboard sound in my BIOS the soundcard kicked in. However, the system sounds aren't working (I love those drums and the road runner sound when you press backspace). Also, with a 7.1 setup my center channel and subwoofer don't work at all. All other channels are working like a champ. So I am trying to accomplish two things, get system sounds working and get center/sub channels working. How should I try to fix this?

• Interviewing someone for general unix skills

  How would you test a developer that claims to have *nix shell experience (just to be clear, we don't want to test if someone can develop on *nix, only that they know their way around the command line). I was thinking about making them solve a problem of getting information out of log files, which would involve some basics like cat, grep, cut, ... combined with piping. What other basic knowledge would you ask for? Once again, this isn't for interviewing someone who will develop for *nix systems, and also not for *nix system admins, but just for regular developers that sometimes need to do some work on a *nix system.

• Finally found a replacement for my.live.com&hellip;

  As I had alluded to before, the transition of http://my.live.com/ to http://my.msn.com/ caused me serious grief. I've been an RSS addict for many, many years and I found the my.live.com UI to be the ultimate RSS reader and gateway to the web. It had been my home page for a long time.  My.msn has a LONG way to go before it matches the elegance and performance of my.live. The site I ended up going with is http://www.netvibes.com/ .   It’s the closest thing I could find that could do four column tiles with a reasonable amount of information density .  I’d still prefer a lot less “chrome” and better use of space, but it’s as close as I’m going to get… One feature I really do like about netvibes, is the pagination feature.  The built in feed reader is also quite nice… All-in-all, I’d recommend netvibes…

I did sudo add-apt-repository ppa:germia/archive3 previously, however I got some errors then, I did sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:germia/archive3 to undo the setting. I wonder if my problem is related wtih this PPA?

  I'm using an Ubuntu LiveCD right now and need to recover files from a (Windows 7) partition. I've read about TestDisk and tried downloading it and untaring it but: testdisk-6.14-WIP.linux26.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now I don't know why it doesn't work (noob). I tried using sudo apt-get install testdisk but: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package testdisk so.... HELP :D

• Overheating on Dell Studio XPS 1645

  So I was wondering if anyone else has come upon this problem, and/or has come up with a solution. When I use my Ubuntu partition, my computer becomes extremely hot, and the fan runs very noisily for a very long time. If I reboot into windows while this is happening, my computer actually begins to cool down while doing the exact same tasks. Thinking this might just be a bug with Ubuntu, I installed fedora on another partition, and the same problem occurs. Is this a problem with the kernel? Cpufreq tells me that my CPU is running at 933 MHz out of a possible 1.6 GHz from my Intel Core i7 CPU Q70. For anyone who wants more information, I have 8 GB of memory, and an ATI Mobility Raedon HD 5730 Graphics Card. I'm open to any ideas anyone might have. Thanks in advance!

• how to remove update repo that always fails

  A week or so ago I tried to add a new package repo that supposedly had a package I wanted. Unfortunately, the information about it was out of date, and I found that it fails to connect to it each time. I'd like to just remove the new repo, but I'm not sure how to do that. • Spherical harmonics lighting - what does it accomplish?

  From my understanding, spherical harmonics are sometimes used to approximate certain aspects of lighting (depending on the application). For example, it seems like you can approximate the diffuse lighting cause by a directional light source on a surface point, or parts of it, by calculating the SH coefficients for all bands you're using (for whatever accuracy you desire) in the direction of the surface normal and scaling it with whatever you need to scale it with (e.g. light colored intensity, dot(n,l),etc.). What I don't understand yet is what this is supposed to accomplish. What are the actual advantages of doing it this way as opposed to evaluating the diffuse BRDF the normal way. Do you save calculations somewhere? Is there some additional information contained in the SH representation that you can't get out of the scalar results of the normal evaluation?

• What is a generalized form creator that runs on .NET / Windows?

  At the institution that I'm at, we've been looking for web applications that enable users to create and deploy their own forms. Similar applications are Wufoo, and google forms. Unfortunately, those solutions will not work for us, because we are required to host all data and information on our own servers. I've found a few solutions that are written in PHP, but at this point, it doesn't appear that this is acceptable. I've tried searching for ".net form creator" but unfortunately, when you search for ".net forms" you get a lot of results relating to created asp.net webforms, which is not what we're looking for at all. I've been told that finding a solution that runs on .NET and windows servers with either Oracle or MSSQL databases would be much more acceptable. I've found a few, but they are open source, and the IS Security people are not kind to those solutions, despite my attempts to show otherwise. If anyone knows of some solution out there, I would greatly appreciate you passing on the names of those applications!

• How to workaround or diagnose a kernel panic when "safely removing" external hdd?

  I'm experiencing an issue when using the "Safely Remove" option to remove my 1TB external HDD from the Unity Launcher. Not every time, but occasionally my screen will go black and display LARGE amounts of text information (which I obviously cannot screen cap). The jist of the info displayed is that unmounting or 'safely removing' the drive causes a kernel panic. Is there a Command Line command to remove mounted drives, or at least one that would show me some sort of error output when the drive is removed? I'm trying to narrow down the cause. I could be imagining this, but it seems to happen most often when I have other programs running when I remove the drive (i.e. Firefox, Transmission). Please note that my external drive is not in use when I attempt to remove it and it is not being used either by Firefox or Transmission at these times. Any help would be appreciated.

• Would installing debugging symbols help for reporting bugs?

  I'm running a beta version of Ubuntu (12.10) and I've been reporting crashes through apport's automated system. I've glanced at the stacktraces for a couple of the issues and noticed a lot of what look like hex addresses and these: "No symbol table info available." I was wondering if installing the debugging symbols packages from synaptic would provide better information to package maintainers when I report bugs. In other words, would the stacktrace be more useful if I installed those packages? If so, would installing those packages make any (noticeable) performances differences (will my computer run slower)?   I heard someone talking about a fork bomb, I did some research and found some dreadful information about some strange looking characters people can have you type at the command line and as a result do bad things on the computer. I certainly would not issue commands I do not understand but one never knows what can happen. I heard that some OS allows the administrator to place some limit on user processes to mitigate the effects of fork bombs, is this protection in Ubuntu by default or would a person with sudo privilege have to set this? If so, how?

• Fedora login gone after Ubuntu updates on a dual boot

  After a software update for Ubuntu, my dual boot with Fedora will not show Fedora in the start menu. It just boots into Ubuntu and when I hold Shift and boot, it only has Ubuntu in the list. I have tried the post about installing grub-customizer but when I run that, I get Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package grub-customizer I cannot find any other way to fix this problem. I am a complete newbie to Linux.

• Multi-platform Map Application

  I'm working on a web project (PHP, jQuery) which currently using Google Maps powering up the map functionality of the application, however we need to make it multi-platform like you can go to the dashboard and choose one from 5-10 map providers (which Goolge Maps is just one of them) to underlying your map functionality. So, as the application is supposed to show the data on map, almost in every single place we have to deal with the API provided by that specific map provider. Currently we are thinking about revising our modular structure and/or making something like an adapter for each provider to deal with their native syntax but via our standard methods. I wish to have your ideas and your experiences, specially if you ever made an interface for dealing via 2-3 different map providers. That would helps much and I really appreciate that. If you need any further information, just ask me to update the question. Update: As Vicky Chijwani suggested Mapstraction, now I'm also wondering which one is more better (pros & cons), having an adapter implemented on Javascript or PHP?

• Understanding how to create/use textures for games when limited by power of two sizes

  I have some questions about the creating graphics for a game. As an example. I want to create a motorbike. (1pixel = 1centimeter) So my motorbike will have 200 width and 150 height. (200x150) But the libgdx only allows to load sizes with the power of 2?! (2,4,8,16,...) First I thought about that way. I will create my bike with the size (200x150) and save it as png. Than I will open it again (e.g. with gimp) resize the image to a size which uses values with power of 2 (128x128). I will load that as texture in the programm and set width as 200 and height as 150. But wouldn't it be a problem? Because I will lose some pixel information when I make the first conversation.?! Isn't it?
