  • Achieving forward compatibility with C++11

    - by mcmcc
    I work on a large software application that must run on several platforms. Some of these platforms support some features of C++11 (e.g. MSVS 2010) and some don't support any (e.g. GCC 4.3.x). I see this situation continuing on for several years (my best guess: 3-5 years). Given that, I would like set up a compatibility interface such that (to whatever degree possible) people can write C++11 code that will still compile with older compilers with a minimum of maintenance. Overall, the goal is to minimize #ifdef's as much as reasonably possible while still enabling basic C++11 syntax/features on the platforms that support them, and provide emulation on the platforms that don't. Let's start with std::move(). The most obvious way to achieve compatibility would be to put something like this in a common header file: #if !defined(HAS_STD_MOVE) namespace std { // C++11 emulation template <typename T> inline T& move(T& v) { return v; } template <typename T> inline const T& move(const T& v) { return v; } } #endif // !defined(HAS_STD_MOVE) This allow people to write things like std::vector<Thing> x = std::move(y); ... with impugnity. It does what they want in C++11 and it does the best it can in C++03. When we finally drop the last of the C++03 compilers, this code can remain as is. However, according to the standard, it is illegal to inject new symbols into the std namespace. That's the theory. My question is, practically speaking, is there any harm in doing this as a way of achieving forward compatibility?

  • VS2012 - How to manually convert .NET Class Library to a Portable Class Library

    - by Igor Milovanovic
    The portable libraries are the  response to the growing profile fragmentation in .NET frameworks. With help of portable libraries you can share code between different runtimes without dreadful #ifdef PLATFORM statements or even worse “Add as Link” source file sharing practices. If you have an existing .net class library which you would like to reference from a different runtime (e.g. you have a .NET Framework 4.5 library which you would like to reference from a Windows Store project), you can either create a new portable class library and move the classes there or edit the existing .csproj file and change the XML directly. The following example shows how to convert a .NET Framework 4.5 library to a Portable Class Library. First Unload the Project and change the following settings in the .csproj file: <Import Project="$(MSBuildToolsPath)\Microsoft.CSharp.targets" /> to: <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath32)\Microsoft\Portable \$(TargetFrameworkVersion)\Microsoft.Portable.CSharp.targets" /> and add the following keys to the first property group in order to get visual studio to show the framework picker dialog: <ProjectTypeGuids>{786C830F-07A1-408B-BD7F-6EE04809D6DB}; {FAE04EC0-301F-11D3-BF4B-00C04F79EFBC}</ProjectTypeGuids>   After that you can select the frameworks in the Library Tab of the Portable Library:   As last step, delete any framework references from the library as you have them already referenced via the .NET Portable Subset.     [1] Cross-Platform Development with the .NET Framework - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg597391.aspx [2] Framework Profiles in .NET: http://nitoprograms.blogspot.de/2012/05/framework-profiles-in-net.html

  • Is there a better way to organize my module tests that avoids an explosion of new source files?

    - by luser droog
    I've got a neat (so I thought) way of having each of my modules produce a unit-test executable if compiled with the -DTESTMODULE flag. This flag guards a main() function that can access all static data and functions in the module, without #including a C file. From the README: -- Modules -- The various modules were written and tested separately before being coupled together to achieve the necessary basic functionality. Each module retains its unit-test, its main() function, guarded by #ifdef TESTMODULE. `make test` will compile and execute all the unit tests, producing copious output, but importantly exitting with an appropriate success or failure code, so the `make test` command will fail if any of the tests fail. Module TOC __________ test obj src header structures CONSTANTS ---- --- --- --- -------------------- m m.o m.c m.h mfile mtab TABSZ s s.o s.c s.h stack STACKSEGSZ v v.o v.c v.h saverec_ f.o f.c f.h file ob ob.o ob.c ob.h object ar ar.o ar.c ar.h array st st.o st.c st.h string di di.o di.c di.h dichead dictionary nm nm.o nm.c nm.h name gc gc.o gc.c gc.h garbage collector itp itp.c itp.h context osunix.o osunix.c osunix.h unix-dependent functions It's compile by a tricky bit of makefile, m:m.c ob.h ob.o err.o $(CORE) itp.o $(OP) cc $(CFLAGS) -DTESTMODULE $(LDLIBS) -o $@ $< err.o ob.o s.o ar.o st.o v.o di.o gc.o nm.o itp.o $(OP) f.o where the module is compiled with its own C file plus every other object file except itself. But it's creating difficulties for the kindly programmer who offered to write the Autotools files for me. So the obvious way to make it "less weird" would be to bust-out all the main functions into separate source files. But, but ... Do I gotta?

  • C++ custom exceptions: run time performance and passing exceptions from C++ to C

    - by skyeagle
    I am writing a custom C++ exception class (so I can pass exceptions occuring in C++ to another language via a C API). My initial plan of attack was to proceed as follows: //C++ myClass { public: myClass(); ~myClass(); void foo() // throws myException int foo(const int i, const bool b) // throws myException } * myClassPtr; // C API #ifdef __cplusplus extern "C" { #endif myClassPtr MyClass_New(); void MyClass_Destroy(myClassPtr p); void MyClass_Foo(myClassPtr p); int MyClass_FooBar(myClassPtr p, int i, bool b); #ifdef __cplusplus }; #endif I need a way to be able to pass exceptions thrown in the C++ code to the C side. The information I want to pass to the C side is the following: (a). What (b). Where (c). Simple Stack Trace (just the sequence of error messages in order they occured, no debugging info etc) I want to modify my C API, so that the API functions take a pointer to a struct ExceptionInfo, which will contain any exception info (if an exception occured) before consuming the results of the invocation. This raises two questions: Question 1 1. Implementation of each of the C++ methods exposed in the C API needs to be enclosed in a try/catch statement. The performance implications for this seem quite serious (according to this article): "It is a mistake (with high runtime cost) to use C++ exception handling for events that occur frequently, or for events that are handled near the point of detection." At the same time, I remember reading somewhere in my C++ days, that all though exception handling is expensive, it only becmes expensive when an exception actually occurs. So, which is correct?. what to do?. Is there an alternative way that I can trap errors safely and pass the resulting error info to the C API?. Or is this a minor consideration (the article after all, is quite old, and hardware have improved a bit since then). Question 2 I wuld like to modify the exception class given in that article, so that it contains a simple stack trace, and I need some help doing that. Again, in order to make the exception class 'lightweight', I think its a good idea not to include any STL classes, like string or vector (good idea/bad idea?). Which potentially leaves me with a fixed length C string (char*) which will be stack allocated. So I can maybe just keep appending messages (delimted by a unique separator [up to maximum length of buffer])... Its been a while since I did any serious C++ coding, and I will be grateful for the help. BTW, this is what I have come up with so far (I am intentionally, not deriving from std::exception because of the performance reasons mentioned in the article, and I am instead, throwing an integral exception (based on an exception enumeration): class fast_exception { public: fast_exception(int what, char const* file=0, int line=0) : what_(what), line_(line), file_(file) {/*empty*/} int what() const { return what_; } int line() const { return line_; } char const* file() const { return file_; } private: int what_; int line_; char const[MAX_BUFFER_SIZE] file_; }

  • how to solve unhandled exception error when using visual C++ 2008?

    - by make
    Hi, Could someone please help me to solve unhandled exception error when using visual C++ 2008? the error is displayed as follow: Unhandled exception at 0x00411690 in time.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000008 Actually when I used visual c++ 6 in the past, there weren't any error and the program was running fine. But now ehen I use visual 2008, I am getting this Unhandled exception error. Here is the program: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <time.h> #ifdef _WIN32 // #include <winsock.h> #include <windows.h> #include "stdint.h" // typedef __int64 int64_t // Define it from MSVC's internal type // typedef unsigned __int32 uint32_t #else #include <stdint.h> // Use the C99 official header #include <sys/time.h> #include <unistd.h> #endif #if defined(_MSC_VER) || defined(_MSC_EXTENSIONS) #define DELTA_EPOCH_IN_MICROSECS 11644473600000000Ui64 #else #define DELTA_EPOCH_IN_MICROSECS 11644473600000000ULL #endif struct timezone { int tz_minuteswest; /* minutes W of Greenwich */ int tz_dsttime; /* type of dst correction */ }; #define TEST #ifdef TEST uint32_t stampstart(); uint32_t stampstop(uint32_t start); int main() { uint32_t start, stop; start = stampstart(); /* Your code goes here */ stop = stampstop(start); return 0; } #endif int gettimeofday(struct timeval *tv, struct timezone *tz) { FILETIME ft; unsigned __int64 tmpres = 0; static int tzflag = 0; if (NULL != tv) { GetSystemTimeAsFileTime(&ft); tmpres |= ft.dwHighDateTime; tmpres <<= 32; tmpres |= ft.dwLowDateTime; tmpres /= 10; /*convert into microseconds*/ /*converting file time to unix epoch*/ tmpres -= DELTA_EPOCH_IN_MICROSECS; tv->tv_sec = (long)(tmpres / 1000000UL); tv->tv_usec = (long)(tmpres % 1000000UL); } if (NULL != tz) { if (!tzflag) { _tzset(); tzflag++; } tz->tz_minuteswest = _timezone / 60; tz->tz_dsttime = _daylight; } return 0; } uint32_t stampstart() { struct timeval tv; struct timezone tz; struct tm *tm; uint32_t start; gettimeofday(&tv, &tz); tm = localtime(&tv.tv_sec); printf("TIMESTAMP-START\t %d:%02d:%02d:%d (~%d ms)\n", tm->tm_hour, tm->tm_min, tm->tm_sec, tv.tv_usec, tm->tm_hour * 3600 * 1000 + tm->tm_min * 60 * 1000 + tm->tm_sec * 1000 + tv.tv_usec / 1000); start = tm->tm_hour * 3600 * 1000 + tm->tm_min * 60 * 1000 + tm->tm_sec * 1000 + tv.tv_usec / 1000; return (start); } uint32_t stampstop(uint32_t start) { struct timeval tv; struct timezone tz; struct tm *tm; uint32_t stop; gettimeofday(&tv, &tz); tm = localtime(&tv.tv_sec); stop = tm->tm_hour * 3600 * 1000 + tm->tm_min * 60 * 1000 + tm->tm_sec * 1000 + tv.tv_usec / 1000; printf("TIMESTAMP-END\t %d:%02d:%02d:%d (~%d ms) \n", tm->tm_hour, tm->tm_min, tm->tm_sec, tv.tv_usec, tm->tm_hour * 3600 * 1000 + tm->tm_min * 60 * 1000 + tm->tm_sec * 1000 + tv.tv_usec / 1000); printf("ELAPSED\t %d ms\n", stop - start); return (stop); } thanks for your replies:

  • I don't understand how work call_once

    - by SABROG
    Please help me understand how work call_once Here is thread-safe code. I don't understand why this need Thread Local Storage and global_epoch variables. Variable _fast_pthread_once_per_thread_epoch can be changed to constant/enum like {FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_INIT, BEING_INITIALIZED, FINISH_INITIALIZED}. Why needed count calls in global_epoch? I think this code can be rewriting with logc: if flag FINISH_INITIALIZED do nothing, else go to block with mutexes and this all. #ifndef FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_H #define FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_H #include #include typedef sig_atomic_t fast_pthread_once_t; #define FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_INIT SIG_ATOMIC_MAX extern __thread fast_pthread_once_t _fast_pthread_once_per_thread_epoch; #ifdef __cplusplus extern "C" { #endif extern void fast_pthread_once( pthread_once_t *once, void (*func)(void) ); inline static void fast_pthread_once_inline( fast_pthread_once_t *once, void (*func)(void) ) { fast_pthread_once_t x = *once; /* unprotected access */ if ( x _fast_pthread_once_per_thread_epoch ) { fast_pthread_once( once, func ); } } #ifdef __cplusplus } #endif #endif FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_H Source fast_pthread_once.c The source is written in C.   • Regarding Sqlite Datbase connectivity in iphone

    - by Prash.......
    hi.. I am developing an application in iphone in which i have to do the database connectivity using sqlite. I have made a "clsDBManage" class which contains 4 functions open_database, close_database, is_database_open, getdatabase_connection, which are globally defined ,i have a screen called "user details" in which i am filling the user details such as name , mobileno , email-id , password, i want that when user feeds the info it should get connected with database and store the details entered and should authenticate the user the next time he logs in. (Just as we have yahoo login,gmail login screen) clsDBManage.h +(int) openDBConnection; +(int) closeDBConnection; +(BOOL) IsDatabaseOpen; +(sqlite3 *)getDBConnection; clsDBManage.m import "clsDBManage.h" import "Types.h" sqlite3 *DBConnection=nil; @implementation clsDBManage +(int) openDBConnection { NSArray *paths = NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES); NSString *documentsDirectory = [paths objectAtIndex:0]; NSString *path = [documentsDirectory stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"iphone.sqlite"]; //Before if ([self IsDatabaseOpen] == YES) [self closeDBConnection]; // Open the database. • Choosing a VS project type (C++)

    - by typoknig
    Hi all, I do not use C++ much (I try to stick to the easier stuff like Java and VB.NET), but the lately I have not had a choice. When I am picking a project type in VS for some C++ source I download, what project type should I pick? I had just been sticking with Win32 Console Applications, but I just downloaded some code (below) that will not work right even when it compiles with out errors. I have tried to use a CLR Console Application and an empty project too, and have changed many variables along the way, but I cannot get this code to work. I noticed that this code does not have "int main()" at its beginning, does that have something to do with it? Anyways, here is the code, got it from here: /* Demo of modified Lucas-Kanade optical flow algorithm. • TVirtualStringTree compatibility between Delphi 7 and Delphi 2010 - 'Parameter lists differ'

    - by Brian Frost
    Hi, I've made a form containing a TVirtualStringTree that works in Delphi 7 and Delphi 2010. I notice that as I move between the two platforms I get the message '...parameter list differ..' on the tree events and that the string type is changing bewteen TWideString (D7) and string (D2010). The only trick I've found to work to suppress this error is to use compiler directives as follows: {$IFDEF TargetDelphi7} procedure VirtualStringTree1GetText(Sender: TBaseVirtualTree; Node: PVirtualNode; Column: TColumnIndex; TextType: TVSTTextType; var CellText: WideString); {$ELSE} procedure VirtualStringTree1GetText(Sender: TBaseVirtualTree; Node: PVirtualNode; Column: TColumnIndex; TextType: TVSTTextType; var CellText: string); {$ENDIF} and to repeat this where the events are implemented. Am I missing a simple solution? Thanks.

  • Best way to programmatically detect iPad/iPhone hardware

    - by Adam Eberbach
    The reason I need to find out is that on an iPad, a UIPickerView has the same height in landscape orientation as it does in portrait. On an iPhone it is different. The iPad programming guide introduces an "idiom" value to UIDevice: UIDevice* thisDevice = [UIDevice currentDevice]; if(thisDevice.userInterfaceIdiom == UIUserInterfaceIdiomPad) { // iPad } else { // iPhone } which works OK while you're in iPad (3.2) but not iPhone (3.1.3) - so it looks like there also needs to be an ifdef to conditionally compile that check, like: #if __IPHONE_OS_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED >= 30200 UIDevice* thisDevice = [UIDevice currentDevice]; if(thisDevice.userInterfaceIdiom == UIUserInterfaceIdiomPad) { // etc. } #endif To me that's starting to look very clumsy. What's a better way?

  • Do I need afxres.h, if I am not using MFC? How do I remove it from the .RC script?

    - by Cheeso
    I don't know RC scripts. I want to include Product version, File version, etc. metadata into a DLL I'm building. I'm using an .rc file to do that. The build is makefile driven. I'm following along with an example .rc scrpit I found. The template .rc file includes afxres.h , but I don't think I need that. But if I just remove it I get a bunch of compile errors. What does a basic, non-MFC RC script look like? Can I remove all the stuff like this: ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // English (U.S.) resources #if !defined(AFX_RESOURCE_DLL) || defined(AFX_TARG_ENU) #ifdef _WIN32 LANGUAGE LANG_ENGLISH, SUBLANG_ENGLISH_US #pragma code_page(1252) #endif //_WIN32 ....

  • Faulting DLL (ISAPI Filter)...

    - by Brad
    I wrote this ISAPI filter to rewrite the URL because we had some sites that moved locations... Basically the filter looks at the referrer, and if it's the local server, it looks at the requested URL and compared it to the full referrer. If the first path is identical, nothing is done, however if not, it takes the first path from the full referrer and prepends it to the URL. For example: /Content/imgs/img.jpg from a referrer of http://myserver/wr/apps/default.htm would be rewritten as /wr/Content/imgs/img.jpg. When I view the log file, everything looks good. However the DLL keeps faulting with the following information: Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.3959, faulting module URLRedirector.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0002df25. Here's the code: #include <windows.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <httpfilt.h> #include <time.h> #include <string.h> #ifdef _DEBUG #define TO_FILE // uncomment out to use a log file #ifdef TO_FILE #define DEST ghFile #define DebugMsg(x) WriteToFile x; HANDLE ghFile; #define LOGFILE "W:\\Temp\\URLRedirector.log" void WriteToFile (HANDLE hFile, char *szFormat, ...) { char szBuf[1024]; DWORD dwWritten; va_list list; va_start (list, szFormat); vsprintf (szBuf, szFormat, list); hFile = CreateFile (LOGFILE, GENERIC_WRITE, 0, NULL, OPEN_ALWAYS, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL, NULL); if (hFile != INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE) { SetFilePointer (hFile, 0, NULL, FILE_END); WriteFile (hFile, szBuf, lstrlen (szBuf), &dwWritten, NULL); CloseHandle (hFile); } va_end (list); } #endif #endif BOOL WINAPI __stdcall GetFilterVersion(HTTP_FILTER_VERSION *pVer) { /* Specify the types and order of notification */ pVer->dwFlags = (SF_NOTIFY_ORDER_HIGH | SF_NOTIFY_SECURE_PORT | SF_NOTIFY_NONSECURE_PORT | SF_NOTIFY_PREPROC_HEADERS | SF_NOTIFY_END_OF_NET_SESSION); pVer->dwFilterVersion = HTTP_FILTER_REVISION; strcpy(pVer->lpszFilterDesc, "URL Redirector, Version 1.0"); return TRUE; } DWORD WINAPI __stdcall HttpFilterProc(HTTP_FILTER_CONTEXT *pfc, DWORD NotificationType, VOID *pvData) { CHAR *pPhysPath; PHTTP_FILTER_URL_MAP pURLMap; PHTTP_FILTER_PREPROC_HEADERS pHeaderInfo; CHAR szReferrer[255], szServer[255], szURL[255], szNewURL[255]; DWORD dwRSize = sizeof(szReferrer); DWORD dwSSize = sizeof(szServer); DWORD dwUSize = sizeof(szURL); int iTmp, iTmp2; CHAR *pos, tmp[255], *tmp2; switch (NotificationType) { case SF_NOTIFY_PREPROC_HEADERS : pHeaderInfo = (PHTTP_FILTER_PREPROC_HEADERS)pvData; if (pfc->GetServerVariable(pfc, "HTTP_REFERER", szReferrer, &dwRSize)) { DebugMsg(( DEST, "Referrer: %s\r\n", szReferrer )); if (pfc->GetServerVariable(pfc, "SERVER_NAME", szServer, &dwSSize)) DebugMsg(( DEST, "Server Name: %s\r\n", szServer )); if (pHeaderInfo->GetHeader(pfc, "URL", szURL, &dwUSize)) DebugMsg(( DEST, "URL: %s\r\n", szURL )); iTmp = strnstr(szReferrer, szServer, strlen(szReferrer)); if(iTmp > 0) { //Referred is our own server... strcpy(tmp, szReferrer + iTmp); DebugMsg(( DEST, "tmp: %s - %d\r\n", tmp, strlen(tmp) )); pos = strchr(tmp+1, '/'); DebugMsg(( DEST, "pos: %s - %d\r\n", pos, strlen(pos) )); iTmp2 = strlen(tmp) - strlen(pos) + 1; strncpy(tmp2, tmp, iTmp2); tmp2[iTmp2] = '\0'; DebugMsg(( DEST, "tmp2: %s\r\n", tmp2)); if(strncmp(szURL, tmp2, iTmp2) != 0) { //First paths don't match, create new URL... strncpy(szNewURL, tmp2, iTmp2-1); strcat(szNewURL, szURL); DebugMsg(( DEST, "newURL: %s\r\n", szNewURL)); pHeaderInfo->SetHeader(pfc, "URL", szNewURL); return SF_STATUS_REQ_HANDLED_NOTIFICATION; } } } break; default : break; } return SF_STATUS_REQ_NEXT_NOTIFICATION; } /* simple function to compare two strings and return the position at which the compare ended */ static int strnstr ( const char *string, const char *strCharSet, int n) { int len = (strCharSet != NULL ) ? • Conflicting PACKAGE_NAME and other macros when using autotools.

    - by baol
    When using autotools (with a config.h file) for both a library and a software built on that library the compiler complains about a redefinition of some macros (PACKAGE_NAME, PACKAGE_TARNAME and so on). How can I prevent this? The config.h file is needed in the library to propagate it's setting to the software that use it. Right now I have a wrapper script library_config.h that includes the original config.h and provides defaults when the user is not using autotools, but even undefining the macros in that package I get the redefinition warning from gcc. #ifndef LIB_CONFIG_H #define LIB_CONFIG_H #ifdef HAVE_CONFIG_H # include "config.h" # undef PACKAGE # undef PACKAGE_BUGREPORT # undef PACKAGE_NAME # undef PACKAGE_STRING # undef PACKAGE_TARNAME # undef PACKAGE_VERSION # undef VERSION #else # if defined (WIN32) # define HAVE_UNORDERED_MAP 1 # define TR1_MIXED_NAMESPACE 1 # elif defined (__GXX_EXPERIMENTAL_CXX0X__) # define HAVE_UNORDERED_MAP 1 # else # define HAVE_TR1_UNORDERED_MAP 1 # endif #endif #endif I believe the best option would be to have a library without that macros: How can I avoid the definition of PACKAGE, PACKAGE_NAME and so on in the library when using autotools?

  • 32bit to 64bit inline assembly porting

  • Including non-standard C headers in C++

    - by Swaroop S
    I needed to include a few c headers ( non standard header files ) in my C++ code to be compiled by gcc. The C header (foo.h) has support for : #ifdef __cplusplus extern "C" { #endif and similarly at the end for }. The c++ code has the include "foo.h" I believe I should be able to just include the header (foo.h) and create instances of structs defined in the .h file. I am not able to compile the source code. It seems like the compiler looks at the c code as if it were c++ code. I see error such as error: expected constructor, destructor or type conversion before "(" Did I do something wrong ? I took advise from : http://www.parashift.com/c++-faq-lite/mixing-c-and-cpp.html What else do i need to do, to tell the c++ compiler "expect and compile as c code" ?

  • Problem wit MDAC when trying to compile in VS2008 using x64 bit target platform

    I am trying to compile an 32 bit application. I am aware of problems with it but that is why its being compiled on 64 bit version. I am hanging at this problem. Application uses lots of sql stuff. In sqltypes.h file: (provided by MDAC) #ifdef _WIN64 typedef INT64 SQLLEN; typedef UINT64 SQLULEN; typedef UINT64 SQLSETPOSIROW; #else For some reason when its compiled on 32 bit platform it works great But when I try building it on 64 it goes berserk. Error 61 error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'SQLLEN' ..\external\microsoft sdk\include\sqltypes.h 50 It does not recognize INT64, UINT64. Is there something I need to enable so it will work under 64 build process? Missing some #include or #define? Any help would be great Thanks

  • Documentation concerning platform-specific macros in Linux/POSIX

    - by Nubok
    When compiling a C/C++ program under Windows using Visual Studio (or a compiler that tries to be compatible) there is a predefined macro _WIN32 (Source: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/b0084kay.aspx) that you can use for platform-specific #ifdef-s. What I am looking for is an analogon under Linux: a macro which tells me that I am compiling for Linux/an OS that claims to be (more or less) POSIX-compatible. So I looked into gcc documentation and found this: http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/cpp/System_002dspecific-Predefined-Macros.html Applied to my program, the following macros (gcc 4.4.5 - Ubuntu 10.10) looked promising (I hope that I didn't drop an important macro): #define __USE_BSD 1 #define __unix__ 1 #define __linux 1 #define __unix 1 #define __linux__ 1 #define _POSIX_SOURCE 1 #define __STDC_HOSTED__ 1 #define __STDC_IEC_559__ 1 #define __gnu_linux__ 1 #define __USE_SVID 1 #define __USE_XOPEN2K 1 #define __USE_POSIX199506 1 #define _G_USING_THUNKS 1 #define __USE_XOPEN2K8 1 #define _BSD_SOURCE 1 #define unix 1 #define linux 1 #define __USE_POSIX 1 #define __USE_POSIX199309 1 #define __SSP__ 1 #define _SVID_SOURCE 1 #define _G_HAVE_SYS_CDEFS 1 #define __USE_POSIX_IMPLICITLY 1 Where do I find a detailed documentation of them - as to the mentioned Windows-specific macros above? Additionally I'd be interested in macros normally defined for other POSIX-compliant operating systems as *BSD etc.

  • Trying to use SHCreateShellItem, having #include issues

    - by dreamlax
    There is a function in called SHCreateShellItem which is declared in <shlobj.h>, but it has been #ifdef'd out based on whether or not _WIN32_IE is greater than or equal to 0x601 (if it is, then the declaration is present). However, even when I define _WIN32_IE to 0x601 before I include <shlobj.h>, MSVC++ still complains that SHCreateShellItem is undeclared. For example, I cannot get the following to compile: #define _WIN32_IE 0x601 #include <shlobj.h> int someFunction (LPITEMIDLIST parent, LPITEMIDLIST child) { HRESULT result; IShellItem *shellObj; result = SHCreateShellItem (parent, NULL, child, &shellObj); if (SUCCEEDED(result)) { // do stuff } return SUCCEEDED(result); } Do I need to define _WIN32_IE in a different way?

  • How to log C++ exception if running outside debugger, otherwise rethrow

    - by Stefan Monov

I don't want to do "#ifdef NDEBUG", because I prefer not to do release builds at all (can't be bothered). So what should I use as a "runningInDebugger()" check?

  • Question about best practices and Macros from the book 'C++ Coding Standards'

    - by Victor T.
    From Herb Sutter and Andrei Alexandrescu's 'C++ Coding Standards', Item 16: Avoid Macros under Exceptions for this guideline they wrote: For conditional compilation (e.g., system-dependent parts), avoid littering your code with #ifdefs. Instead, prefer to organize code such that the use of macros drives alternative implementations of one common interface, and then use the interface throughout. I'm having trouble understanding exactly what they mean by this. How can you drive alternate implementations without the use of #ifdef conditional compile macro directives? Can someone provide an example to help illustrate what's being proposed by the above paragraph? Thanks

  • Parenthesis operator in C. What is the effect in the following code

    - by Andre
    Hi everyone, I was playing with a macro to enable/disable traces when I came out with the following code when the macro is disabled: int main { ("Hello world"); } This code is valid and I got the desired effect (nothing happens when the macro is disabled) but I couldn't figure out what exactly is happening. Is the compiler seeing the parenthesis as a "nameless" method declaration? To make it clearer the code is : #ifdef TRACE #define trace printf("%s %d -> ",__FILE__, __LINE__);printf else #define trace #endif int main { trace("Hello world"); } Thanks in advance.

  • C++ conditional compilation

    - by Shaown
    I have the following code snippet #ifdef DO_LOG #define log(p) record(p) #else #define log(p) #endif void record(char *data){ ..... ..... } Now if I call log("hello world") in my code and DO_LOG isn't defined, will the line be compiled, in other words will it eat up the memory for the string "hello world"? P.S. There are a lot of record calls in the program and it is memory sensitive, so is there any other way to conditionally compile so that it only depends on the #define DO_LOG? Thanks in advance.
