• VMWare Player pauses often

  I'm using a 64bit Windows 8 inside vmplayer, with 2 virtual processor cores, virtual hard disk resides on a fast local disc and is not preallocated; host CPU is Intel i7 3770, should be capable of hardware virtualisation but I don't know if VMWare uses it; NAT networking; Sound card connected, USB connected, accelerated 3D graphics (NVidia 313.30 on host) My problem is, that the VM often pauses for a few seconds, and then speeds up for a few seconds to reach real time again. Time in the VM actually moves faster after the pause, for example all animations using timers speed up. When running, the vmware-vmx process shows ~150% CPU usage in top, but 0% when pausing (and D state i.e. waiting for IO). iotop shows normal disk writes from vmware-vmx threads, but during pauses, the flush kernel thread uses 99%. Are there some options to try so that VMWare doesn't wait for IO? I've tried a few things available from the GUI but the issue never went away…

• Generic Content Player?

  The general idea on the web appears to be that video/audio are to be separated with plain text. By separated, I mean you have a place that plays video/audio and a place that you read text. This is because it is widely understood that they are vastly different. However, audio and video are just another way of communication, just like text. So why do we separate the two even if they are nearly the same thing? Correct me if I'm wrong but, most tutorials are either plain text how-to's (wiki-style) or visual/auditory instructional videos (YouTube). Why aren't the two combined? Or, if it's already been done can someone reply with the link? This might be bordering off-topic and if it is off-topic then please point me to the right place so it won't be. This might also appear to be an obvious question, however I'm not sure if this subject has really been deeply thought-out by more than a few individuals.

  What is the best way performance wise to do this? When I click a tile I want it to get the distance and if I am close enough I can interact with the tile. One way would be to find the tile by doing mouse / tile width when I click correct? But then how would I get that tiles position? I know how to find the distance I just don't know how to get a certain tiles position from the array when I click it

  I'm using the following code in my viewDidLoad to load a sound: NSURL * url = [NSURL fileURLWithPath: [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@/Moto - Hit Sound.mp3", [[NSBundle mainBundle] resourcePath]]]; NSError * error; hitSoundPlayer = [[AVAudioPlayer alloc]initWithContentsOfURL:url error:&error]; hitSoundPlayer.numberOfLoops = 0; Then I'm using this in a void method to play the sound: if(CGRectIntersectsRect(main.frame, enemy1.frame)){ [hitSoundPlayer play]; } This does seem to work, however the first time the sound is played there is a lot of lag and the game stops temporarily. I'm using this same method for when in an IBAction and it works fine, it must be the fact that it's also detecting a collision that makes the sound lag. If I want to be able to play sounds quickly and on the spot without any sort of lag am I doing the right thing? Do I want to use another method? I'm not using any frameworks like cocos2d. I was thinking to implement some kind of enumerated values like this private enum ExperienceValues { FriendlyMatch = 0.1, Training = 0.15, LeagueMatch = 0.6, CupMatch = 0.85, Qualification = 1.4 } And to calculate experience by the time user spend on the field 90min * 0.6 = 54 Is this approach ok ? • Frame Accurate Browser Launchable Video Player ... ?

  I have a requirement where I need to enable playback (full screen) of a h.264 MPEG4 (thanks for the correction!) video from a local network, launchable from a browser link on a Windows workstation, and be frame accurate. By frame accurate I mean that I need to be able to scrub through the video in the same way you would with a vtr, stop at a frame, and then move backwards and forwards frame by frame (it is for a very specific compliance requirement where have to be able to check every frame if there is something that is potentially against broadcasting guidelines). The application itself is used to capture notes while viewing the material, so the end model is for a dual monitor workstation, with a web form in one, the video playing full screen in the second (no issue launching the video and manually having to move it to the second screen), and then the user controls the video via keyboard shortcuts or a jog shuttle. I have looked at QT, but the java bindings seem to be dead or nearly so, flash isn't frame accurate, VLC given its streaming heritage seems to be only able to move forward by a frame and not backwards, and all I have left are commercial offerings that in my experience are difficult and expensive to change. Any ideas of where I should look or alternative options? Any advice appreciated!

  I have just installed an Openbravo appliance on my Windows 7 VM Player host. I am now staring at a command prompt that tells me to go to http://localhost to access the ERP system, but I cannot find any browser on the appliance. I am guessing I should rather follow their advice to configure an IP address for the Linux VM and just access that from a Windows browser on my host. How do I go about this? More specifically, How do I choose a local IP address to assign? How do I set things up so that this IP address is visible to my Windows host? Their help says to assign an DNS, to make the server visible to the internet, but internet visibility per se is not needed. How should I interpret or adapt this help for that? Finally to make the IP address available to the Internet, assign some DNS servers to it: $ echo "nameserver IP_DNS1" /etc/resolv.conf $ echo "nameserver IP_DNS2" /etc/resolv.conf

  I copied a Windows XP VM that I've been using on my Mac (VMWare Fusion)to a Windows 7 machine that has VMWare 7 installed. I was quite pleased when it started up and appeared to work, but when I actually tried to use it, I noticed it runs very slowly. Unusably so. It takes about 10 minutes, for example, for a Visual Studio 2010 project to open (with VS 2010 running in the VM). Is this supposed to work? Is there any way to fix this VM to get it to run well under Windows VMWare Player?

• Our Flash Streaming Player Occasionally Stutters like a Skipping CD after a Period of Time

  We offer a streaming player for a number of our clients, who are responsible for their providing us with their own audio streams. We have written a very simple flash player that can play all of the streams that we support (icecast/shoutcast/live365/mp3 over http/etc). Unfortunately, we have found that when listening, our player sometimes begins to stutter (like a skipping cd), sometimes after only 10 minutes, and sometimes after an hour of listening. We have noticed this behaviour in firefox on both linux and windows. Does anybody know anything about this problem? We know that flash isn't ideal for infinite streams of audio, but it's about all that we can find that's on every platform out there. If anybody can suggest a solution to our problem, I'll be your friend forever. • Is it possible to embed a flash player in a table and retain the table properties

  I'd like to embed a music (flash) player in a table with clickable images but the embed code seems to throw the table properties off - it extends the width of the table. Is it possible to embed the player on the same row as the image whilst still retaining the table width? • Why does ubuntu 11.10 freeze when playing video?

  I run ubuntu 11.10 on i5 CPU with 4GB RAM nvdia geforce GTS 250 connected to widescreen tv (HDMI) When using vlc, xbmc or boxee to play movies the system randomly freeze, the audio is looping the last words of the video file and nothing is responding. So I have to manually reset the system. Can anybody help? P.S. I forgot to mention the the log file was full of line regarding xbox 360 wireless receiver (I dual boot with windwos 7) so I unplugged it to see if that counts

• Can the Windows Media Player COM control play AVI files from memory (instead of from a file)?

  I have a C# app, and I'm looking at using the Windows Media Player COM control to play animation and audio. So far, the only way I see of programatically controlling what the control is playing is to set its URL property to point to some file (I assume there's some way to pass in a playlist). Is there any way the WMP can render an AVI that is entirely in-memory, like a MemoryStream or something? If so, can WMP skip from one AVI to the next seamlessly (i.e. no glitch in either the audio or the video as it transitions from one to the next)? If WMP only plays files, is there some way to cue up a list of the files in advance of play start? If so, can WMP be made to skip from one file to the next without a brief interruption? Any knowledge or links to knowledge would be much appreciated.

  I have a design problem with my Player and Level class in my game. So below is a picture of the game. The problem is I don't want to move on the black space and only the white space. I know how to do this as all I need to do is get the check for the sf::Color::Black and I have methods to do this in the Level class. Now I was thinking if I made the Player position static and pass it into the Level as parameter in update I could do it. The problem is interaction. I don't know what to do. I could maybe make player go into the Level class. However, what if I want multiple levels? So I have big design problems that I'm trying to solve.

  I have an XPS15 laptop, core i5, 8GB ram. Whenever I login my laptop I here the startup bongo sound. But my sound system just doesn't play anything, may it be a short audio clip or a movie.   We're currently implementing a voucher system on our site which will allow our users to obtain a 25+% discount on certain products, provided they donate 10% of the purchase price to charity. We will offer the ability to share the discounts via social media in return for larger discounts to the sharer for each person who clicks through the link and buys an item. I understand that social links have SEO benifits, but this appears to be based on lots of people sharing the same link. If our voucher users share a unique link i.e. http://ourdomain.com/sipsfesdf rather than a fixed link http://ourdomain.com/product-name will we still receive the same benifts?   I have a client and their traffic from social media reads thus: 80% from facebook 1% from Twitter This suggestsd they are not exploiting twitter at all and this was in my presentation but my boss took it out claiming twitter stats are under reported in google analytics. I can't substantiate this claim and wonder where she got this idea from. Can anyone shed light on this? • Wordpress : Automatically transfer media files to Amazon S3

  I've been using VPS to host 7 Wordpress websites, most of them require big storage but very little RAM and traffic. So I'm thinking of moving the static files(uploads folder) content to Amazon S3 and I'm looking for the most viable solution to this. I want every website to have their own bucket and newly uploaded media files automatically uploaded to Amazon S3 without using plugin. I'm ok with cron job, for example the files were uploaded first to my server, then transferred to S3 and deleted from my server every 24 hour. Or is there any way for me to change the default upload directory to my S3 bucket without sacrificing any Wordpress functionality(resize/title etc)? What do you think the most efficient way to do this? Currently I'm looking at this plus cron job but I would like to know better option if it exist.

  I want to buy a new PC to be used as a media server that streams HD movies, music to any wireless device on my network (laptop, desktop, TV, etc.). I was wondering about the PC hardware's specifications that I need to have so that it can work just fine? (It will be wireless) Is there any tutorial showing how it could be done? And the security - how can I secure it? As well as I need it to to host my emails. I mean I have many emails. And sometimes I'm using desktop, sometimes laptop.. so is it possible to make the server store a copy of my emails, attachments, all sent items (whether they were from desktop or laptop)?

  Is there any software available for ubuntu that can emulate Windows Media Center for connecting a computer to an xbox? I tried following the xbox wizard, but it says that I need Windows. I just want to be able to choose to show pictures, play music or video on my tv through my xbox instead of my computer. I can currently do something similar using my Samsung phone and wireless TV using AllShare. I just choose which video I want to play and where and it works like magic. The TV my xbox is connected to though doesn't have wireless so I was hoping to use the xbox for similar functionality. Thanks

• Burn 24/96 flac files to play on standalone player

  I have vinyl record rip in 24/96 flac format. Each track is almost 200 MB big, so the album won't fit on CD. How to burn these files on a DVD to play with the same quality on standalone DVD player? My player supports SACD, DVD Audio and DVD video as well. My OS is Ubuntu Lucid (preferred), but I have also WinXp with Nero installed. BTW, is there any difference between DVD+ and DVD- for audio?

• cannot print from flash-player plugin

  I am running flash-player plug-in 10.0.32.10 inside of Firefox on a SLED 11 machine. Firefox can print to the network printer without issue from File Print. However, I cannot get the flash-player plugin to print at all. The print dialog comes up, asks for which printer, and which pages. I click Print and it was as if I had pressed cancel. Is this a known issue?
