• cron stops running when processing multiple items

  Cron stops running (no visible error) after a few hours when I add more than 5 jobs in my cron tab. Each job runs every minute (polls a webpage for information which takes 1 second). I tried putting all of my php jobs in a shell script and called this shell script instead but the same problem occurs. Cron stops running, no error in the log file, no error email sent out either. Anyone encountered this before? Where/how canI debug this?

• Problems with system() calls in Linux

  I'm working on a init for an initramfs in C++ for Linux. This script is used to unlock the DM-Crypt w/ LUKS encrypted drive, and set the LVM drives to be available. Since I don't want to have to reimplement the functionality of cryptsetup and gpg I am using system calls to call the executables. Using a system call to call gpg works fine if I have the system fully brought up already (I already have a bash script based initramfs that works fine in bringing it up, and I use grub to edit the command line to bring it up using the old initramfs). However, in the initramfs it never even acts like it gets called. Even commands like system("echo BLAH"); fail. So, does anyone have any input?

• Preloading images in HTML, is there a more modern way?

  I have an image loaded by JS on a mouse event. It's a fairly big image so I want to make sure it gets pre-loaded. I reemmber some old techniques from years ago and found this example: <SCRIPT LANGUAGE = JAVASCRIPT> if (document.images) { img1 = new Image(); img2 = new Image(); img1.src = "imageName1.gif"; img2.src = "imageName2.gif" } </SCRIPT> I wondered if this is still good/relevant, or maybe browsers automatically detect unused images and preload them anyway? Note my page has to support IE6, so I might still need older techniques anyway, but I'm still interested if more modern browsers have a better way?

• In a pre-commit hook - how to access/compare current and previous versions of files

  I'm trying to add to our existing pre-commit SVN hook so that it will check for and block an increase in file size for files in specific directory/s. I've written a python script to compare two file sizes, which takes two files as arguments and uses sys.exit(0) or (1) to return the result, this part seems to work fine. My problem is in calling the python script from the batch file, how to reference the newly committed and previous versions of each file? The existing code is new to me and a mess of %REPOS%, %TXN%s etc and I'm not sure how to go about using them. Is there a simple, standard way of doing this? It also already contains code to loop through the changed files using svnlook changed, so that part shouldn't be an issue. Thanks very much

• Transforming a TXT file in a list, getting wrong

  I have a txt plain file that has a list of numbers. One number per line, like: 978-972-722-649-8 978-972-722-646-7 978-972-722-627-6 978-972-722-625-2 978-972-722-594-1 etc. This list is on a file called file.txt, was created and saved on TextEdit using Western (ISO Latin 1) encoding. Now I am trying to use Applescript to read this file and transform it on a list. I have this script set myDirectory to path to desktop folder as string set myFile to myDirectory & "file.txt" try set open_file to ¬ open for access file myFile without write permission set myList to read open_file using delimiter return close access open_file on error try close access file open_file end try end try after running this script, myList contains just ONE item and this item is "97" (I suppose that is the first two numbers of the first entry).   I need to get all the text nodes with a certain font-face in a page to an array. I tried.. textnodes = document.evaluate("//* [@style='font-family: foo;']//text()[" + "not(ancestor::script) and not(ancestor::style)]", document, null, XPathResult.UNORDERED_NODE_SNAPSHOT_TYPE, null); and textnodes = document.evaluate("//* [@face='foo']//text()[" + "not(ancestor::script) and not(ancestor::style)]", document, null, XPathResult.UNORDERED_NODE_SNAPSHOT_TYPE, null); But these does not work with pages that is styled by external CSS files. Seems getComputedStyle() is the way to go. • Check if a symlink has changed

  I have a daemon that, when it's started, loads its data from a directory that happens to be a symlink. Periodically, new data is generated and the symlink updated. I want a bash script that will check if the current symlink is the same as the old one (that the daemon started with) and if not, restart the daemon. My current thought is: if [[ ! -e $old_dir || $(readlink "$data_dir") == $(readlink "$old_dir") ]]; then echo restart ... ln "$(readlink "$data_dir")" "$old_dir" -sf else echo no restart fi The abstract requirement is: each time the script runs, it needs to check if a symlink on a given path now points to a something other than it did the last time and if so do something. (The alternative would be to check if the data at the path has changed but I don't see that being any cleaner.) My questions: Is this a good approach? Does anyone have a better idea? Where should I put $old_dir?

• CSS file not getting downloaded in Visual Studio 2008 SP?

  Hi guys, This might sound a little wierd, but all of a sudden the CSS and Javascript files referenced in my master page are not being downloaded while the page is being rendered. I am working on a ASP.NET MVC project and things were all fine like half an hour ago! Here is what I have in head section of the master page, <link href="/Content/MyCSS.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <script src="/Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> I can see the CSS class intellisense while designing pages. But in the page source I do not see these files being added. I can see the css being applied in the VS designer. I have tried restarting VS, restarting my machine too. Anyone else faced this situation before. I might go crazy now.

  I spent a VERY long time today looking up a method to alternate row colors within a specified range. There really isn't a lot out there and to be honest what I found just looked over-complicated. I have a billing and shipping address form with a dropdown list for the state. Upon checking/unchecking the "billing address same as shipping" everything copies over except the state dropdown list. • jQuery tabs work in Safari and firefox but show up as bullet point in IE

  I am using the jquery tabs . It shows up fine in Safari and firefox, however it will not load correct in IE. They show up as bullet points in stead of tabs. I see both of the "DEBUG_VERBOS" and "DEBUG_SUPPRESS_ERROR_MSGS" apply to the script, which is fine in this case. However, if there are some "conflicting" debug modes, I am not sure how to set the "precedence of debug_modes"? Also, I am not certain if my approach is good enough to Perlists and I hope I am getting my feet in the right direction. One biggest problem is that I now put if statements inside most of my subroutines for controlling their behavior under different modes. Is this okay? Is there a more elegant way? I know there must be a debug module from CPAN or elsewhere, but I want a real minimal solution that doesn't depend on any other module than the "default". And I cannot have any control on the environment where this script will be executed...
