• Configure JBOss cache to run on JBoss server 4.2.3.GA

  Our commercial application used to run on different application server and letely we started adjust it to run on JBoss server. The problem is that that application runs JBoss cache and as part of the integration with this framework, the web-inf\lib contains the follwing jars: jboss-aop.jar, jbosscache-core.jar, jboss-common.jar, jboss-common-core.jar, jboss-j2ee.jar, jboss-jmx.jar, jboss-logging-spi.jar This causes a problem to use JNDI through the application because the jboss-common-core.jar contain naming package that cause JBoss JNDI to work incorrect. So I need to find a way to organise my jars that on one hand jboss cache will keep working and on the other hand not to interfere to the work of JNDI Perhaps it include moving the some or all those jars from the web-inf\lib to the /server/default/lib Looking for someone who is familiar in this subject (continue of this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2847375/problem-configure-jboss-to-work-with-jndi3 )

• How to start a process from within a windows service

  I want to pop a browser with a given url from within a windows service. Like so: System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("http://www.venganza.org/"); Works fine when running in a console but not from within the service. No error messages, no exceptions, the Process.Start() command just seem to do nothing. It smells of some security issue, maybe something with the service properties and/or logon options? Annoying stuff this... Anybody? (Oh, and on windows 7/.NET framework 3.5.)

• Performance Testing Versus Unit Testing

  I'm reading Osherove's "The Art of Unit Testing," and though I've not yet seen him say anything about performance testing, two thoughts still cross my mind: Performance tests generally can't be unit tests, because performance tests generally need to run for long periods of time. Performance tests generally can't be unit tests, because performance issues too often manifest at an integration or system level (or at least the logic of a single unit test needed to re-create the performance of the integration environment would be too involved to be a unit test). Particularly for the first reason stated above, I doubt it makes sense for performance tests to be handled by a unit testing framework (such as NUnit). My question is: do my findings / leanings correspond with the thoughts of the community?

The use case is simple: for logging purposes, I want to determine the underlying type name of an entity that might be wrapped by a dynamic proxy without having any references to NHibernate or Castle (which know about the proxy) For example, I might have a CatProxYadaYada, but I'm interested in Cat. • My C#.NET application is running slower when the exe is located on the network

  Hi, My C#.NET application is running much slower when the exe is located on the network. And I'm talking about everything, even the graphical dispay is slower. For example: when a form is already loaded, if I unplug my network cable and minimize and maximize the window, it takes a very long time to redraw itself. I'm using framework .NET 3.5 SP1. Any idea on the cause? My hypothesis so far: I'm missing some options when building the app? my corporate antivirus checks more stuff because the exe is on the network the cache of Windows XP SP3 doesn't work the same way when the exe is on the network the server is a Novell server: maybe this does change something ? Note that I had to refactor iterating over a list but am now applying a filter within the iteration. • Windows CE 5.0 emulator needed

  I need an emulator for Windows CE 5.0 to test an embedded device (not PDA or smartphone) application that I am developing. This is what I have already tried: Visual Studio 2008 Pro includes an emulator. Unfortunately, it does not include a Windows CE image (only Windows Mobile and Smartphone). Yes, there is a difference, see the screenshots here. Windows CE includes a "start button", windows that can be minimized, moved around etc. There is a Windows CE Device Emulator available from Microsoft. Apart from the fact that its license only permits non-commercial use, it does not run in Windows 7 (it requires .net Framework 1.1, which is incompatible with Windows 7) nor in Windows XP mode (error message: "Emulator for Windows CE will not run one virtual machine within another. Please run the virtual machine on the host operating system"). Is there any option that I have missed?

• [Strange problem] ASP.NET MVC 2.0 RTM cannot work with VWD 2008 Express on a new Windows 7 Pro

  The MVC 2.0 RTM works great on my old Vista machine with VWD 2008 Express, but I just bought a new computer with Windows 7 Pro, installed VWD 2008 Express SP1 and MVC 2.0 RTM by using Web PI 2.0. but after installation, I found the VWD doesn't have any MVC options, that means I can't either create new MVC projects or compile existing MVC projects. Why? What other steps I need to do to make it work? I'm sure the MVC has been installed properly since my MVC site on the new computer works well (so the IIS side has no problem), just the VWD can't 'realize' that the MVC framework is already installed... (tried to uninstall and install many times, but won't work)

After signing, the message and the signature are transmitted via a webservice (.net) to the server. Everything is fine until this point. on the server, the XML shall be included in another XML-document, which is publicly accessible. The signature should be published as well in order to grant non-repudiation. Q: Is there a smooth option to convert the detached Pkcs#7 into XML-DSIG (e.g. functionality within the .net framework)?   I've recently become a little frustrated with Django as a whole. It seems like I can't get full control over anything. I love Python to death, but I want to be able (and free) to do something as simple as adding a css class to an auto-generated form. One MVC framework that I have really been enjoying working with is Grails (groovy). It has a FANTASTIC templating system and it lets you really have full control as you'd like. However, I am beyond obsessed with Python. So I'd like to find something decent and powerful written in it for my web application development. Any suggestions? Pylons maybe?

  I am currently working on a project in Microsoft Robotics Development Studio, and I am having a little trouble deploying the solution for general use. My problem is this. I am making a simulation, so I need to deploy the simulation engine along with my project. This is dependent on the Ageia PhysX engine, DirectX, and the Microsoft XNA framework. I understand this, and I understand that the deployment tool for MRDS (dssdeploy) isn't set up to deploy simulations by default. So, if anyone has worked with MRDS before, and has deployed a simulation, I could use some help with this.

• Web Services vs Persistent Sockets

  I plan on doing a little benchmarking around this question, myself. But I thought it would be good to get some initial feedback from "the community". Has anyone out there done any analysis regarding the pros and cons of these two technologies? My thoughts: Opening and closing TCP/IP connections for web service calls is relatively expensive compared to persistent connections. Dealing with intermittent connection errors and state, etc... would be easier with a web service based framework. You don't see World of Warcraft using web services. One question that I can't seem to find much of answer for anywhere (even on here)... are the limits on the # of persistent connections a single network card can support, etc?

• Languages and development methodologies

  Having never worked with Ruby on Rails, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It says It is intended to be used with an Agile development methodology that is used by web developers for rapid development. This got me asking how a given language/framework can be more appropriate for given development methodologies. Are there certain languages that are more friendly for pair programming, for instance? Are there language features that make certain methodologies are more appropriate? Are there features that make certain methodologies impossible? My initial reaction is to dismiss the connection (the design process is a business process, which is more dependent on business needs that language features). But I'm an only programmer within the firm, and I'm a partner, so I get to decide the business needs. What do you think? Also, if the SO community finds that certain languages point towards certain methodologies, what methodology is most common for c#, which is what I use most of the time?

• How to set WCF threads to schedual differently

  Hi, I'm running a winservice that has 2 main objectives. Execute/Handle exposed webmethods. Run Inner processes that consume allot of CPU. The problem is that when I execute many inner processes |(as tasks) that are queued to the threadpool or taskpool, the execution of the webmethods takes much more time as WCF also queues its executions to the same threadpool. This even happens when setting the inner processes task priority to lowest and setting the webmethods thread priority to heights. I hoped that Framework 4.0 would improve this, and they have, but still it takes quite allot of time for the system to handle the WCF queued tasks if the CPU is handling other inner tasks. Is it possible to change the Threadpool that WCF uses to a different one? Is it possible to manually change the task queue (global task queue, local task queue). Is it possible to manually handle 2 task queues that behave differently ? Any help in the subject would be appropriated. Gilad.

How does this differ from the System.Lazy<...> construct now available in .NET 4.0 (and perhaps earlier)? More depth based on DoctaJones' great answer: Would you recommend one over the other if I wanted to operate on IQueryable as a List<T>? I'm assuming that since Lazy<T> is in the framework now, it is a safer bet for future support and maintainability? • Setup requires .NET 4.0 - System already has .net 4.0

  Hi all, I created a service which I now want to install to test, I created a setup program from the templates in VS2010. When running the setup program it prompts me to download and install .net fw 4.0, but I already have it installed. I did try to just install the file that I get pointed to (4.0 cliet), but not only does it still not work, it causes vs2010 to throw an unknown error and can't open. I've now uninstalled everything (including vs2010 beta) and started afresh with VS2010 ultimate trial full version, framework 4.0 and win 7 but it still prompts me to install fw 4.0 when I try to run the setup. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Thanx in advance Willem

• MVC2 Annotations dll not found by VS2008 compiler, how do I make it look in the right place?

  I have VS2008 SP1 running with .NET 3.5 SP1 I have MVC2 running (with MVC1 uninstalled) All works ok except when I call the System.Components.DatAnnotations.dll, then the compiler complains of not being able to find it. Message is: Could not load file or assembly 'System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations, Version=99.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. I tried repairing and reinstalling SP1 of both VS and .Net framework. I also tried referencing the assembly by browsing to it in the Reference assemblies in Programs directory. I have tried out most of the Google search result forum results but to no avail, I think it may be something simple which I have over looked. Any ideas?

  I'm familiar with ORM as a concept, and I've even used nHibernate several years ago for a .NET project; however, I haven't kept up with the topic of ORM in Java and haven't had a chance to use any of these tools. But, now I may have the chance to begin to use some ORM tools for one of our applications, in an attempt to move away from a series of legacy web services. I'm having a hard time telling the difference betweeen the JPA spec, what you get with the Hibernate library itself, and what JDO has to offer. So, I understand that this question is a bit open-ended, but I was hoping to get some opinions on: What are the pros and cons of each? Which would you suggest for a new project? Are there certain conditions when it would make sense to use one framework vs the other?

• Can I pass data into a HashMap<String,Object> from JSP to a JavaBean?

  Hi Everyone, I am just starting out with JSP, Java, etc web development... I would love to use some sort of framework, but for this project I can't do that. In any case I want to potentially pass essentially limitless data (for flexibility) to my javabeans. My idea was if I can have key value pairs that would really easy. The values will always be strings or integers. HashMap seems ideal in this case. Is this possible? Any ideas? Can I do this with JSP Bean tags or should I write scriptlets? Thanks!!!
