• Correct process for creating builds reliant on 3rd party packages

  I work on a Symfony 2 codebase. We use a number of third-party packages (most are in the Symfony Standard Edition). We use composer for dependencies. We current have all of our third-party code committed in our repository (after changing .gitignore files) to ensure stability. According to Proper Programming Practices™, we are not supposed to have any third-party packages in our repo. We are supposed to pull them down and include them at build time. How are we to do proper QA and debugging when at any given time our dependencies could push an update that breaks functionality?

• How to repopulate DataTables when having lots of data?

  Hi I am using datatables jquery plugin. I now have to clear the entire datatable and populate it with new data on the fly(all done through ajax). So what I was thinking to do is when I need to do this. Destroy the datatable remove the data html call up the partial view that renders the table Rebind the datatable with jquery. However it seems that datatable has no destroy method. So I know you can set the datatable to do something with ajax but I am not sure how. My datatable just uses the dom way when the page is loaded. I don't want to use the "fnAddData" as I am not sure how to format this 2d array they want and I don't think this is the best option. I think the best option is some how render the partial view back and use there ajax plugin. But I am not sure where that is or how to use it(I know it exists but that's about it). Thanks

• Which Visual Studio 2010 edition for sole developer

  I am the sole .net developer for a small company. My projects span many .net technologies including WinForms, WPF, SQL, XNA, Linq, WCF, WTF?, and others. I struggle staying on top of all these projects so I'm looking to make my life easier with the release of VS2010. Without a mentor I rely heavily on StackOverflow and whatever else Google comes up with. Should I convince my company to get an edition with an MSDN subscription? Is it one of those things where once you have it, you can't imagine life without it? What about the source control that comes with VS2010, do you all find it better than an SVN server? We're looking to hire another programmer this year, would I be best off getting a Team edition of VS2010 to be best prepared for that hire? Thanks!

  I have a lot of experience with Java/OO. There are tons of C++ tutorials/references out there, but I was wondering if there are a few key ones that a Java programmer might find useful when making the transition. I will be moving from server-side J2EE to Windows Visual C++ desktop programming. I have googled and found tons of resources, but am overwhelmed and don't know where to best spend my time. I have only a few days to get a good start. Is Visual Studio Express / Microsoft Visual C++ the best IDE for me to start with? Also, any words of wisdom from others who know and work with both languages?

  Hi, i was just asked today, but i couldn't answer precisely so that's why i'm asking here :-) There is any book about Firewall design and implementations (Unix environment and C)? For sure, i could recommend TCP/IP books, and what i did, but there is some design decisions, that are not related with TCP/IP. For sure, i said about the netfilter/iptables (RTFSC) but as well we cannot assume that the netfilter/iptables is the best approach since we don't have too many baselines (ok, we could compare it with PF, but again, read source code to understand design decisions is not always the best way). So if anybody knows a book about this theme, please shoot it!

• Tension between the dependency inversion principle and avoiding "new" in C++?

  I have seen a lot of advice that it is better to do Type object; than Type* object = new Type(); in C++ whenever possible. I understand the rational behind this and appreciate it. But according to my understanding, to practice dependency inversion requires pointers, e.g.: Type* object = new Implementation();. (Or am I wrong about that?) Is there an inherent tension between the DIP and avoiding new when using C++? If so, what patterns/principles/practices can be used to mitigate this tension?

• What are some Servlet Container pros and cons for a Solr installation?

  The SolrInstall wiki page lists seven different server / Servlet Containers compatible with Solr: Tomcat Jetty Resin JBoss WebSphere Weblogic Glassfish I'm sure that "best" is subjective, so I'll just say my criteria are: easiest to set up, best for search performance with a smallish, infrequently-updated dataset, and with the fewest number of gotchas. Jetty and Tomcat both have apt-get solr packages, so they're clearly the frontrunners for some. Jetty is used in the demo install, but there's some notes that Jetty has some difficulties handling Unicode in some cases. Tomcat is a common choice but my understanding is that it's not as lightweight and has a lot of features not needed by Solr. Is it worth considering any of the others? Are there some important pro's and cons I should be aware of?

  I am trying to remove a specific set of data from a MySQL database field, however I am not sure what the best statement would be for this. For example, if I have a data in a field such as... The use of a secondary password will allow you to gain access to your account from a non-authenticated computer. • Implementing a runtime Look Up Table in C#

  Hey all, I'm currently working on a robot interface GUI, using C#. The robot has two sensors, and two powered wheels. I need to let the user the option to load a Look Up Table (LUT) during runtime, one for each sensor, that will tell the robot what to do according to the sensor's reading. I think the best way to do it is using a .csv file, formatted like so: index , right wheel order, left wheel order the index is an int between 0-1023 and is actually the sensor's reading. the orders for the right and left wheel are integers, between -500 - 500. Example - left sensor's readings: 1,10,20 meaning: sensor reads 1 -- left wheel 10 rpm right wheel 20 rpm So my question is this: what is the best way to implement it? using a dataset?(if so, how?) using an array? (if so, how do I load it during runtime?) Any help would be much appreciated, Yarok

I also read the following topics: Best way to implement a download counter? Best way to count file downloads on a website and found nothing useful enough.. What I would like to ask is: what kind of download counter the big companies implement? is it when the user cancels the download doesn't count? Is it even possible - to count file downloads, and remove 1 from the count if the user canceled the download? I already have a script that works great - but only when the file is 1MB or upper, when its less than a 1MB and a user cancels the download - the download still counts.. Thanks in advanced, Din.

• If I am developing a hosted payments page, what should the infrastructure look like?

  If I am not storing credit card info, do I have to be concerned with PCI-compliance? I will be using a payment processor with a bank in my country. Literally just taking the credit card info and passing it to the gateway and processor. I would love to get an idea of the various technologies I might need to consider from an software architectural point of view.   There are many open-source libraries that can be compiled with Visual Studio. I'm porting a program from Linux to Windows, but it depends on a number of libraries. I don't know what the best practices regarding libraries are on Windows. On Linux, these libraries are typically part of the distribution. To use sqlite on Debian, for example, you need only to install libsqlite3-dev and the include files and libraries (both static and dynamic) are automatically installed and available to your program. If you need a different version than your distribution supplies, you can compile it in your home directory, install it to ~/include and ~/lib, and set the appropriate environment variables so that your compiler includes those directories in its search path. What is the best way to use libraries that are distributed as source on Windows? If I link dynamically rather than statically, is there an easy way to copy required DLLs into the output directory to ease redistribution (assuming license requirements are met)?
