• What is the solid Windows Server 2008 VPS hosting (preferably) in Europe?

  I am looking for Windows Server 2008 VPS hosting to host a few sites/apps with special needs. I spend few hours googling but I am not satisfied with the result. I looks to me that this business is full of crap. Two thirds of the reviews seems to be faked and advertised offers is unavailable or contains some hidden fee. So my question is which VPS hosting with Windows Server 2008 do you recommend? I slightly prefer data center in Europe and euro payment it isn't deal breaker. Note: I didn't made question community wiki because I am interested in answers from users with some reputation and I want to preserve theirs answers.

• Intel Server Board S3420GP fails to boot with video connected

  All, Building a new system using an Intel Server Board S3420GP motherboard and an Intel Xeon X3440 processor. Before installing this motherboard into the chassis we want to test that it will actually boot correctly. We have mounted the processor and RAM with no hard drives attached. The boot sequence differs between the next variable: 1) Connecting video results in the system fans ramp up and down, twice, and then the system beeps with the same behavior repeating; the system status light shows "Amber" 2) With no video, the system goes through POST and the diag LEDs show that the system is missing a bootable device Need some assistance identifying why the board would fail to POST with video connected. // Update // Using another Power Supply the system gets passed the fans ramping up and down twice. Video still does not display.

• SQL Server 2008 lincensing question relating to web servers

  We purchased SQL Server 2008 Standard licences last year under the server + device CAL licencing model. Since our server has 2 physical CPUs and only 46 clients, this option was by far the cheapest. Now we'd like to be able to query a small number of stored procedures from our Windows Server 2003 Web Edition server, which is in a seperate zone on our firewall. I think SQL Server 2008 Web Edition could be an option to us, but is it possible to replicate/mirror stored procedures and tables to such a server and would we be breaking any rules by doing so? Is this a form of multiplexing? Also, would replication/mirroring work both ways, if we were to want to write back data from the web server?

• Site to site VPN using RRAS from an untrusted network?

  Our remote office will be moving to a new space where internet will be provided. They'll be behind a router doing NAT (I do not have admin rights to this router). They will be sharing a printer with the other people on the LAN, but will need VPN to our network for email and file shares. I was thinking of just having them run the windows VPN client and connecting via PPTP like they do when they are off-site, but I have read that multiple PPTP connections from the same NAT'd address to the same destination doesn't work well or at all. I am thinking some kind of site-to-site VPN is needed so there is just one tunnel. Can I just put in a VPN gateway, set it to connect to our RRAS/PPTP server, and have them use it as their default gateway? Perhaps even use the local default gateway for internet traffic. If so, what VPN gateway/device is recommended for this? Or other solutions? Thanks.

• VPN and Bonjour conflicting

  Does anyone know why a VPN connection might interfere with Apple's Bonjour? I've noticed that my Mac and various iDevices have trouble finding each other on my local network, when I have VPN connections open. Things like Home Sharing and Wi-Fi Sync work some of the time, but sometimes fail to find the other device. The VPN connections are made using IPSecuritas, which is a GUI around raccoon. I have the local "endpoint mode" set to Host. Apple mentions that Home Sharing may conflict with VPNs, but they don't specify why, or how to fix it. I'm using a Mac with OS 10.7.3 and IPSecuritas to connect to the VPN, an iPhone, and an iPad.

• How can I recover [data from] my failing USB key?

  I have a Corsair Flash Voyager USB key, and it's almost completely failed. When I plug it into my [WinXP] computer, the OS mounts it and open up explorer to the drive's root directory. However, if I try to copy any data off, I get an error message saying that the device is not there. If I leave it plugged in, the OS seems to oscillate between seeing it and not seeing it, since the "Safely Remove Hardware" tray icon appears and disappears every few seconds. The damage was probably caused by my abuse, either from plugging it in with my keys hanging off of it or from losing the cap and keeping it in my pocket uncapped. Is there anything I can do to save the data from it or even rehabilitate the drive?

• Can not boot CentOS VM using VirtIO in KVM

  I converted qcow2 image to raw and changed I/O bus to VirtIO for a VM. now I can't boot that VM. I Installed VirtIO driver with following command: mkinitrd --with virtio_pci --with virtio_blk -f /boot/initrd-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r) and these are related kernel modules: virtio_balloon 11329 0 virtio_blk 11593 3 virtio_pci 11845 0 virtio_ring 8513 1 virtio_pci virtio 9541 3 virtio_balloon,virtio_blk,virtio_pci and this is what happens during boot-up. I also changed /boot/grub/device.map from "(hd0) /dev/sda" to "(hd0) /dev/vda" but problem still exists. any ideas how to fix this ? This is my default option to boot: title CentOS (2.6.18-308.13.1.el5) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-308.13.1.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 initrd /initrd-2.6.18-308.13.1.el5.img

• Dell laptop doesn't wake from hibernation after installing Windows 8.1

  My laptop worked flawlessly before upgrade to Windows 8.1 from 8. Now when I close the lid of my laptop and it goes into hibernation, it will not wake again. The LED lights seem to work properly but I don't get any video. I have to hold the power key to turn off then turn it back on again. It wakes from sleep properly. All Windows Updates have been installed. There are 2-3 items in the Device Manager that do not have compatible 8.1 drivers, but I believe those are security related items like fingerprint scanner.

• Windows XP waits for usb drive on almost every operation.

  Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed?   I'm using wpkg to auto install Microsoft security essentials on WinXP. At the first login after the installer finishes I get an error message as msseces.exe starts. After a reboot the message goes away. The error message indicates a random access restriction. "An error has occured in the program. Try to open it again. If this problem continues, you'll need to reinstall Microsoft Security Essentials from the Microsoft Download Center. Error code: 0x80070005" Firstly: Does anyone know why I get this error message? Second: How do I debug this kind of problems? The event log doesn't seem to contain anything useful. Is there a tool to detect and list denied system calls?

  I'm working in company (several thousands client computers) using tools like MS Outlook + Exchange + Sharepoint + Communication server. Now our mother company shared the idea that everything should be moved to IBM Lotus Notes + Domino. The reason for this is that Outlook based solution is too expensive (it is the official statement even they don't want to replace MS Office yet). Other reason probably is that they received a lot of licences for Lotus when they bought IBM servers to new data center. My question is: Is this reasonable change or is it just some management game and IBM's marketing? Will it really save money? Other question: Is Lotus better then MS solution? This is serious question, it is not mentioned to open any kind of flame war. I just don't believe the decission and I have never used Lotus tools.

  Hi, I have a fit-PC server with Debian GNU/Linux (Lenny). I would like to use it as a wifi access point since my Linksys WRT54GS has become unstable. I have a USB Ralink wifi NIC. When I insert the card to USB I can see this with lsusb: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter I have tried following various HOWTOs on using wifi card as AP in Linux, however, it seems that the card cannot go into monitor mode. I believe this is because I must use a newer driver or upload non-free firmware or something like that. I have tried installed wicd, but it does not help. I bought this wifi adapter because I was told that it is one of the most common used Linux supported wifi cards that can be used as access point and a lot of other stuff. So my question is: How do I set up this USB wifi card as wireless access point in Debian Lenny?

  When I do SUSPEND on ubuntu, in order to wake up, i can just move the mouse and the computer will wake up. But, I dont want that the computer is waked up when I move my mouse. How can I do that? • How to tell Windows 7 to ignore a default gateway

  I currently have 2 network cards in my PC -- one connected to an internal network on a router with a disconnected WAN port (10.x.x.x), and one connected to the internet through a consumer router (192.168.0.x). Windows seems to recognize them correctly (my "Network and Sharing Center" lists them as "No Internet" and "Internet" respectively), however when I try browsing the internet it always tries the internal network's default gateway, rather than the one with internet access. Trying to ping a website results in "Reply from 10.0.0.1: Destination net unreachable.". A simple "route delete 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.1" fixes the problems, but they return upon reboot, or upon renewing my IP. Is there any way to tell Windows to ignore one NIC's default gateway, or to at least give them priorities?

• iTunes sees my iPhone, but Windows 7 x64 doesn't

  After reinstalling Windows 7 (64-bit), it has stopped recognizing my iPhone. I can see it in iTunes but not in Windows Explorer, so I can't get the photos off. I'm having this problem on three different machines and two different iPhones (my wife's and mine). It's maddening. I've had every version of iPhone since it first came out and I've never had this problem before. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (currently at 10.2.1.1). I've updated iOS on the phone (currently at 4.3).   I get a GPF dialog box out of the blue fairly often (like about 2 hours after I turn on the computer). It basically says that svchost.exe had a failure... (see the corresponding Event Log entry below). Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 5/18/2010 Time: 7:41:16 PM User: N/A Computer: DKHA-IPSA Description: Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004eaa9. Shortly after this error pops up, the computer pretty much grinds to a halt (e.g. some UI elements on the desktop simply do not respond). And I have to do a hard reboot. How do I troubleshoot this type of thing? P.S. The PC has all the latest patches and nothing is missing in the Device Manager.

• Why is my eth0 getting a dynamic ip when it is configured to be static?

  For some reason our office linux box is being assigned an ip address via dhcp and I don't know why. What is confusing to me is that when I check system-config-network it shows that my eth0 is setup to be a static ip address. And /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 also shows it is setup to be a static ip, yet it is getting a different ip address than the one specified in the ifcfg-eth0. Let me know if you have any suggestions on or ideas on where I can look next. Here are a few details that might help you figure out what an idiot I am :) Fedora 11 Router in front of this box is running dhcp, starting at 10.42.1.100 This box is configured to be 10.42.1.50 (at least I think it is!), subnet 255.255.255.0 (which is same as the router's lan subnet) Instead of having the static IP, this box is getting assigned 10.42.1.100.   I have Hyper-V running on a windows 2008. I got a new ip stack from the data center to be set on my virtual machines. But I have difficulties to set these IPs on my VMs because they are on different network. my current server ip is xxx.xxx.18.6 with MASK : 255.255.255.224 and the GW is xxx.xxx.18.1 my new ip stack is xxx.xxx.168.176/29 I can use RRAS to achieve this. Do I need to create another NIC? How do I make these VMs reachable from outside?

• OpenGL support no longer available

  I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on? • Any way to know if two ip address points to the same machine?

  Is there anyway to find if two different IP address in two different network actually points to the same physical device? I need it in Linux. Edit - I have the same server(a raspberry pi) connected via 2 intranets to my client. I don't know the IP address of the server as it is DHCP. The crude way to do is to reach the raspberry pi from one intranet and check with ifconfig to find the ipadress of the machine in the other Intranet. I want to know if there is any other way I can do it? I know the mac address of the machine.But I don't know how do I find the Ipadress based on the mac address.

  I cannot manage to load the tun module in my archlinux box. I'm trying to connect with openvpn, but the log says nm-openvpn[6662]: Note: Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun: No such device (errno=19) lsmod | grep tun returns nothing. If I run sudo modprobe tun it returns failure, but no error message, and lsmod still has no tun. The module seems to exist, as there is a tun.ko.gz in /lib/modules/....... I really dont know what else to try. Thanks in advance

• Electricity in VAIO laptop ports while plugged in

  I have VAIO E series (SVE) laptop. While charger plugged in, touching VGA/HDMI/USB port metal casing gives me burning sensation. So, i checked it with voltmeter and i found that while plugged in there is presences of DC +1.0 V. Same case with my friend's VAIO E Series (VPCEH). Service center says this is normal. But i do not believe them as it is not the case with Dell Inspiron. Please let me know if you are facing same problem with VAIO and is it hazardous to devices which i connect to these ports (like HDD, LED, etc)?

• Why is my ipad's wireless so flakey?

  I'm the proud owner of a new IPad here in the UK. All is good, except for the wifi, which is a bit flakey. It connects fine to my Draytek router which is set for WPA/WPA2 and 56g only, displaying full signal strength. Then, after a few minutes, it goes down to minimum strength... And sometimes it goes back up again. A few times, it seems to loose connection completely, and needs to be turned off and on again. I've looked at the Apple support site, and have tried their recommendations (which are not really very relevant), but still nothing. I've tried setting the router to wpa2 only, and setting long-preamble. Right now, I guess I want to know if it's a hardware problem with my device and should be returned, or if it's a problem with all ipads which will be resolved. Guess I could take it back to the Mac genius bar, but I find those guys so incredibly pretentious and, frankly, rather useless, that i'd rather wait until I've exercised other options!
