• Change Linux console screen blanking behavior

  How do I change the screen blanking behavior on Linux virtual terminals? For example, if I switch to a VT from X, login, and leave the system alone for 5 minutes or so, the screen will blank like a screensaver. It comes back with any keypress, like a screensaver. Mostly I just want to change the timeout, but I'm also interested in other settings. If it helps, one of my systems is running Ubuntu 10.04 with the stock graphics drivers. fbset shows the console using the radeondrmfb framebuffer device.

  How do i disable the notifications of particular errors? A little background to my issue. During the installation of the Kaspersky, it disables all the windows firewall for all except the domain. I have remedied this by creating an offline policy in Kaspersky which enables the Kaspersky firewall when out of the office (ie not connected to the office network). The problem now is that users in the office now see a notification showing that the firewall is disabled even though it’s enabled in all scenarios. It’s just that work and home show as disabled when the clients are connected to the office LAN.   Hi, I have purchased AMD Phenom X4 955 3.2GHZ processor with supporting gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H mother board / 6GB DDR2 RAM / 500GB SATA drive for learning Vmware ESX 3.5 product. In the above configuration, I have installed windows xp 64 bit operating systems and continue to installed vmware workstation 6.5. From the VM workstation, I can able to install ESX3.5 update2, but I unable to start properly, please refer the below mention error. “Mounting root failed. Dropping into basic maintenance shell. To collect logs for VMware, connect a USB storage device and run 'bin/vm-support '. Machine will be rebooted when you exit from this shell.” The same was tested in the windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server / windows 7 32bit / windows 7 64bit also, Please help me to resolve the issue.

  I have a quickly growing web farm running IIS 7 (30+ servers). All servers are identical copies of each other and all servers are physical. We update the software about once a month, and in the current process, we follow the following steps: Disable server from pool on F5 load balancer. Disable HTTP Keep-alives in IIS so connections drop quickly. Change default directory of website to new folder containing new binaries. Test server Enable HTTP Keep-alives. Enable server in F5 pool. Move to server 2 Microsoft used to have Application Center which was abandoned a while ago. They have made a second attempt with the Web Farm Framework, but this adds as much QA time testing the release package as it saves in the deployment. Has anyone seen a commercial off the shelf application that is tailored for managing and deploying to large web farms? Thanks!

  I've got about a dozen Windows XP machines that I need to make a couple specific printer configuration changes to. The printer is "virtual" printer for an electronic delivery service. I'd like to not have to visit each machine individually. I already have the means to execute commands remotely on the machines, I just can't seem to find away to adjust these settings via command line or script. Specifically I need to be able to make the following changes: 1) As an admin user: - Device Settings - Font Substitution Table/Courier New - Change to "Courier" 2) As a specific* user: - Printer Preferences - Paper/Quality - Advanced - Change Graphic/Print Quality to "600 x 600" - Change Document Options/Printer Features/Graphics Mode to "HP-GL/2" *This change is a per user configuration, unless there's some way to make it once. In this situation I only really need it for a specific (different) user on each machine.

• Can't find generic USB audio driver for a Samson COU1 USB microphone

  I am unable to use a Samson USB CO1U microphone on a PC running XP, SP3. When I plug it into the USB port, Windows generates the sound indicating that it has found new hardware, and the green LED on the mic lights. But, it does not work, and the device manager reports that it cannot find a driver after searching. The same mic works on a Vista machine. Samson has no driver on their Web site, and insists that the generic audio driver in Windows should work. (http://www.samsontech.com/PRODUCTS/productpage.cfm?prodID=1810). I cannot find a generic USB audio driver at Microsoft.com. Can anyone help? Larry

• VirtualBox, physical disks, and snapshots

  I have an Ubuntu guest installed on a raw HDD (entire disk, not a partition). It runs just fine under WinXP. In addition, I was able to boot directly into it (using the BIOS boot-device selector). At some point, I have created a snapshot of the VM. I have made some changes since then. Today, after a long time, I tried booting into the "VM" disk. It worked, but all the data there is pre-snapshot (or, rather, frozen at the snapshot). Can I somehow merge the changes since I took the snapshot into the physical state?

  I'm using kvm and I would like to run ubuntu server on it. My goal is to run db2 database instance for development. Is there ready to use ubuntu qcow2 images online for such purpose? Or should I install it from live cd? I've found this instruction UEC/Images, but at launch I get: $ kvm -fda ${floppy} -drive if=virtio,file=./disk.img -boot a ... Nothing to boot: No such file or directory (http://ipxe.org/...) No more network devices No bootable device. Solution: I havent found pre-installed ubuntu virtual machine image online, so solution is to install it by your self.

  I work on an Amazon EC2 instance that somebody else set up. We have an EBS volume mounted on /dev/sda, even though the root device is already on /dev/sda1, and we're also using `/dev/sda2' user@server:~$ mount /dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw) ... (snip) /dev/sda2 on /mnt type ext3 (rw) /dev/sda on /vol type xfs (rw,noatime) ... This doesn't seem to fit with what I know about the way /dev/ works. How is this possible, and more importantly: will this cause trouble in the future? I'm running ubuntu 9.04 jaunty.

  Hi We are looking into putting a hardware firewall into a data center to protect our rack of servers. We are using the servers for terminal services and we have 2 x 1GB connections to the Internet. We have about 50 servers supporting about 250 users which will grow very soon to 500 users. We plan to purchase 2 hardware firewalls to provide HA. Do you think the Sonicwall NSA 240 with Total Secure is a good match for this in terms of performance and protection (from spyware, virus etc?) or is there a better purchase? (Maybe a Watchguard X5 or X8?)

  The issue is: Outlook 2013 simply will not give a preview of Word (nor Excel) docs in attachments. Never had the issue with Outlook 2010. Using Outlook 2013 on Windows 7 64bit SSD with Word 2010. I did notice that "Microsoft Word" is not listed specifically in Trust Center attachment handling, could that be part of the problem? Excel, Visio, RTF and many more are there. Update: strange, search can be performed in Word attachments... but can't preview Word file. So, Outlook can 'see' Word docs but won't let us have that preview. • Do I need a VPN to secure communication over a T1 line?

  I have a dedicated T1 line that runs between my office and my data center. Both ends have public IP addresses. On both ends, we have a T1 routers which connect to SonicWall firewalls. The SonicWalls do a site-to-site VPN and handle the network translation, so the computers on the office network (10.0.100.x) can access the servers in the rack (10.0.103.x). So the question: can I just add a static route to the SonicWalls so each network can access each other with out the VPN? Are there security problems (such as, someone else adding the appropriate static route and being able to access either the office or the datacenter)? Is there another / better way to do it? The reason I'm looking at this is because the T1 is already a pretty small pipe, and having the VPN overhead makes connectivity really slow.

• NTFS Error - file system structure is corrupt and unusable

  My Windows 7 (64) keeps completely locking up, and I have to hold the power button to shit it down. Event logs are showing EventID 55. I realize that this can be a warning sign of an impending disk failure, but my data on this machine is safely backed up and I don't feel like taking the time to replace the drive right now. When I have seen this problem before, I have been able to delete the offending folder with a Linux Live CD. (When CHKDSK /F didn't work). In this case, the folder is from VSS. I assume this is from Crashplan, my online backup provider. What are the ramifications of deleting this folder from Linux? Is it safe to do? "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy26."

• Problem whit usb wireless mouse

  Recently i have thi problem whit my wireless mouse (Trust model on: www.trust.com/15313). Sometimes when i start the Pc or during a game the pointer/arrow stop to move it. In the Pc start the pointer is blocked on the center of the screen. If I'm lucky i have to chance the USB wirless adapter from port 1 to port 2 but sometimes this trick doesn't work i to use the mouse i have to restart. Like you can see in the productor webpage this mouse don't have the direver but only a tool to solve some problem.   I bought a month ago the D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Dual Band USB Adapter and I wonder about the speed. I have a 60Mbps but the speed is never above 300Kbps when I browse Internet or download something. Even from Microsoft or Apple (the fastest server I found). Now on Windows 8, we can see the Wi-Fi stats in Task Manager, there they are: Notice the red rectangle. The signal is 3/5 and I'm about 5 meters far from my router. An Apple Time-Capsule. Also, the connection type is 802.11g, I want N. I made this config in my Device Properties: Does anyone figured out to force the 802.11n in Windows? (Windows 8 preferably)

  How do you repair/reinstall Fedora without deleting any existing partitions or data? I was attempting to upgrade some old Fedora 13 servers to 17, following the instructions in the wiki. After the 14-15 upgrade, rebooting resulted in the output: Dropping to debug shell. sh: can't access tty; job control turned off dracut:/# Running dmesg also shows: dracut Warning: No root device "block:/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root" found Googling shows this error is typically related to some weird RAID issues, but my server is a virtual machine not using any RAID. Using a rescue CD, I can chroot /mnt/sysimage, and all packages and data still seems to be there. How do I make the system bootable again?

• Sharing soundcard to network.

  Let's suppose I have a laptop (L) and desktop PC (D), both with Windows 7 onboard. It is SB X-Fi extreme soundcard with rather good 5.1 home theater connected. But it is not comfortable to watch video sitting on the sofa from my desktop (sofa is in the center of the room and D is in the corner), even though it is 23" monitor. So I'm watching everything from the laptop. So the question - is it possible somehow to "share" soundcard from D to L, so I will watch the video from notebook and listen the sound from the 5.1? L and D are connected via wi-fi (fast enough).

  I have a dell studio 1555 laptop with a GPU inside. The details are below; Hardware details Software details I can play games in widescreen in Vista, but not in 7. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I have the latest Catalyst Control Center. Instead of widescreen, the games are running in a classic style, say 1024x768 ratio. When I play need for speed underground, the maximum possible resolution is 1024x768 (all other games are like this). I have no problem with HD videos and anything else. How can I fix this? • OpenVPN Setup - Service Won't Start

  I'm in the process of setting up OpenVPN on a VPS running Debian 6. I've walked step-by-step through this guide twice now, and I can't get the service to start. When I start the service, the error reported in the log file is: Cannot ioctl TUNSETIFF tun: Inappropriate ioctl for device (errno=25) I've searched the web a few times and I'm not finding anything helpful. I've tried: Changing file permissions: no change Deleting the file: get an error stating no file found (errno=2) Making a folder named "tun": get an error stating no file found (errno=2) I've wiped my installation and completed the steps verbatim twice now. I get no errors along the way, just the error above within my log file. The contents of my server.conf file are listed below, minus all the comments for brevity.
