• Is there any way to get a windows application to always start on "Monitor n"?

  The specific app I'm having a problem with is Firefox but I'd like a generic solution. I have 2 monitors the larger is my main monitor. I would like to be able to tell windows that every time I start app 'X' I want it too start in my main monitor and ideally have it start app 'Y' in my secondary monitor. And I want it to do this regardless of witch monitor the app was when it was last used. Does anyone know of a tool or windows-tweak to make this possible?

• Homepage not showing on Google

  About six weeks ago my homepage (mayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) disappeared from the google organic search for "kayaking pembrokeshire" despite it having been number 2 within a few weeks of it's launch last summer. My previous site (www.mikemayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) had been 2nd for about six years and has 301 redirects for all pages to the new site. Google toolbar still rates the homepage as 3/10 and the domain is still showing in search results, just not the homepage. A little research suggests that this is most likely to be due to an issue with google treating two pages as identical content (one with www. and one with not) since the changes in their algorithms around that time and that the way to fix this is to add some code somewhere. This makes sense to me as my print advertising doesn't have the www part of the address. I have cpanel access but a limited knowledge on web coding, having picked things up as I've gone along and paid for designers etc., when needed. Would someone be able to let me know where I have to go to add the code and what code I need to add to redirect the crawlers to one page? Or is there another issue that is causing this?   One feature of Notepad++, which I find really useful and haven't found elsewhere, is the highlighting of other text that is identical to the one currently selected. Is there something similar possible with vi(m)? (Of course, there is. But how do I achieve it?) That is, any of those: If I am in Visual Mode and have text selected: Highlight identical text If I have searched /foo, highlight all instances of foo. If I am at the beginning of a string (series of characters, numbers or underscores), highlight all other matching strings (prefered solution). The last one is similar to the closing parentheses matching and IMHO the most useful. Edit: For my second use case, I found a solution (that is, Google found it...): :set hls However, the others remain.

• Why does my macbook pro keep freezing?

  Once in a while my macbook pro 10.8.2 freezes for a couple of seconds, this is really annoying. Mouse gets frozen, I can't move it, and screen gets frozen. • Logitech MX3200 keyboard stopped working

  I have a Logitech MX3200 wireless keyboard and mouse set, and keyboard stopped working. I was working with it and it just stopped in the middle of using it. Some notes: The mouse still works flawlessly, i've tried to reconnect the KB i've tried to reconnect everything, mouse reconnects, keyboard reconnects (or pretends to) I've tried to hard reset (holding the connect button on the receiver for 10 seconds). I've tried new batteries I took out the batteries out of the KB & Mouse and unplugged the receiver over night. The media keys still work (launches winamp) but they main keys does not At this point, i've tried everything I've seen online. I just want to know is my keyboard dead in the water? I would say it's been about 8 months to a year since i've bought it, and the articles i find on the internet all say that's as long as they last... is this true? what's everyone's experience? I hope it's not true.

• Transferring DHCP using Windows Server Migration Tool - Why is Powershell is crashing on the import of the .mig file?

  I am migrating DHCP from a windows server 2003R2 DC to a Windows Server 2008R2 DC I've followed this video and its predecessor (Installing Windows Server Migration Tools) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/migrating-dhcp-using-the-windows-server-2008-r2-migration-tools.aspx I went through everything smoothly until the last step. I have exported a .mig file with my DHCP configuration on the old 2003r2 server. I transferred this .mig file over to my 2008R2 server, when running the import command, it will appear to work for a minute or two and then I get a generic windows "Powershell has stopped working" error and I have to close the program. Under the problem details I see the following: FileVersionOfSystemManagementAutomation: 6.1.7600.16385 InnermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException OutermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException DeepestPowerShellFrame: unknown OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.272.7 LocaleID: 1033 Seems like there are permissions issues maybe? I am running powershell as an admin and am logged in to the server as a domain administrator. Any Ideas? Thanks

• Trying to move away from PHP/Yii: RoR, Python/Django or ASP.NET MVC? Your opinions please [closed]

  I have a CS degree and I've been working as a web developer (front & backend) for about 2 years now. I've been working with PHP mostly because it was easy to pick up and find a job, but I've grown to dislike the language and want to try something new, and possibly get a better paying job. That last point is especially important because in my area (Romania/Eastern Europe) PHP jobs are mostly for people fresh out of college/high school, hence the pay is rather low. I've been working with the Yii framework which, if I understand correctly, borrows a lot from Ruby on Rails (convention over configuration, MVC, Active Record, scaffolding). Other than PHP I only know curly-brace languages (C/C++/Java) and bash so Python/Ruby might be a bit challenging. On the other hand I've been using Linux (with vim and recently Sublime Text 2) for almost 4 years now so Windows and a lack of a terminal would have its downsides as well. I'm leaning towards Python/Ruby because of my *nix bias (plus both look like fun), but I've heard great things about ASP.NET MVC as well. Any suggestions? PS: I think there are more jobs in ASP.NET around here, but that's not necessarily a plus, because there are a lot of CS graduates as well. tl;dr: Romanian PHP/Yii developer trying to move to Python/Django or Ruby/Rails or C#/ASP.NET MVC. Suggestions?

• 301 redirect: Is this good or bad for 2 domains?

  Since i couldn't find any appropriate answer to my specific question, I wanted to ask you. I've read alot of things about the 301-redirect for moving pages and so on. A customer of mine has booked a new domain last year for better search results (he included his main keyword into the domain. Before he had only a domain with his business name, which had nothing to say about what he does). I told him, that he should do a 301-redirect so he doesn't loose his position in Google and to redirect all new customers coming from the old domain to the new domain. After about one year where his site hat a good amount of traffic the search results of Google for his keywords are getting more worse. Since he didn't maintain his website (no new content, bad content on all pages and so on) I assumed this would be the problem. He gave his website to another company which also makes websites. They told him, that this 301-redirection is very bad for his website. They removed it, and also updated his content and the template so now he has the same meta keywords on every page (instead of the specific ones I put there before). He also removed the canonical-tag which I placed there to ensure no duplicate content. What I am now afraid of is, that without this redirect Google now will find duplicate content and therefore kick him out of the index, which would be a nightmare, since most of his customers come over his website. I need verification of the fact, that the 301 isn't bad but in fact the correct way of working with 2 domains. If possible with good sources I can point out to him since he don't wants to hear anything about this. If someone also has a few words about the keywords and the canonical-tag I would really appreciate it! Thank you very much!

  I am writing a player's behavior for an arena game, and I'm wondering if you can offer some strategies. I'm writing it in Python, but I'm just interested in the high level game play. Here are the game aspects: Arena is a circle of a given size. The arena size shrinks every round to help break ties. Players are much smaller circles, can be on teams of 1 or 2 players. Players attack by colliding with other players, and based on the physics of the collision (speed of both players, angle), one could force another player out of the arena. Once a player is out of the arena, they are out of the game (for that round). The goal is to be the only team with players left in the arena. All other players have been pushed (through collisions or mistakes) out of the arena. It is possible for there to be no winner if the last two players exit the arena at the same time. Once the player has been programmed, the game just runs. There is no human intervention in the game. I'm thinking it's easiest to implement a few simple programmatic rules for my player to follow. For example, stay close to center of the arena, attack opponents from the inner side of the arena, etc. Are there any good simple game strategies? Would adding a random aspect to the game help? For example, to avoid predictability by the other team or something. Thanks in advance.

• How do laptop battery voltages affect runtime?

  I ordered a new battery for my faithful XPS M1710. I'm not sure of the voltage of the battery I have now, but the new one that the Dell rep got me (after 3-4 times confirming my phone number and laptop model number) is 14.8v. I was a bit concerned about potential incompatibilities (as most of the other compatible batteries listed were 11.1v), but I figure that there's no way that Dell would "recommend" batteries that wouldn't work or fry your system. Now, my question is, how does voltage affect battery life? If we assume the needed power draw to be constant, a higher voltage would indicate less amperage needed, therefore the battery would last longer before running out, yes? Or am I missing something? For reference: P=I*V P = power I = current V = voltage (duh)

• Minimum size of a boot partition on debian

  I'm setting up an old box with Debian. First etch (4.0), because this is the last version that still had boot floppies, then the box is to be upgraded to lenny (5.0) and squeeze (6.0). Therefore, I will end up having a a couple of different kernel versions in the boot partition. If I don't want to be wasteful and if I end up needing a separate boot partition, how large should it be? I've used 10 MB long ago, but that was woody, and only one kernel in the boot partition, and this seems to be too small for what I want to do now.

  How I can move my ubuntu on another drive? I know about clonezilla but problem is that destination drive is smaller the source one. Gparted can't copy-paste partition if destination not the end last partition. I tried dpkg --selected-packages and apt-clone. First one just not install all my packages and removed existed that now I have no full unity and not my all packages. Second one just fail on configuration package. But before I did that way I copy-paste my /etc to new system. • Is it conceivable to have millions of lists of data in memory in Python?

  I have over the last 30 days been developing a Python application that utilizes a MySQL database of information (specifically about Norwegian addresses) to perform address validation and correction. The database contains approximately 2.1 million rows (43 columns) of data and occupies 640MB of disk space. I'm thinking about speed optimizations, and I've got to assume that when validating 10,000+ addresses, each validation running up to 20 queries to the database, networking is a speed bottleneck. I haven't done any measuring or timing yet, and I'm sure there are simpler ways of speed optimizing the application at the moment, but I just want to get the experts' opinions on how realistic it is to load this amount of data into a row-of-rows structure in Python. Also, would it even be any faster? Surely MySQL is optimized for looking up records among vast amounts of data, so how much help would it even be to remove the networking step? Can you imagine any other viable methods of removing the networking step? The location of the MySQL server will vary, as the application might well be run from a laptop at home or at the office, where the server would be local.

  Thunderbird says "You are currently offline. Do you want to go online to get new messages?" The menu item File-Work Offline is not checked. Is there another "offline" setting? Back story: I moved my Thunderbird profile from another user to my new account today following the instructions here. (it's down as I type). This may be a red herring. I have been sending and receiving happily in the last few hours since - so I remain confused. (Windows 7 Enterprise).

• PC powers up but there is no display

  I built a computer with standard components I bought from Newegg about three years ago. It ran great for 2 years and has sat powered down for the last year. I tried to power it up today and the display was blank. It powers up, lights come on, drives start spinning but there is nothing on the display. I verified that the monitor and video adapter work. I also tried the video adapter in a different slot on the mother board with no luck. What's the next thing I should try? Is the mother board shot? Thanks.

• Toshiba Equium A110-252 laptop won't boot Windows.

  I have a Toshiba Equium A110-252 laptop (XP Pro) which stopped booting a couple of weeks ago. The symptoms are that the laptop would display its DOS Toshiba splash screen, then the Windows (XP) boot screen would display, then a very brief blue screen flash, then back to the boot options screen (offering safe mode, safe mode with networking etc, last known good config, etc... none of these work). I assumed a duff HD, and swapped it for a new one and reinstalled from a TrueImage backup. This worked until I installed windows updates I think (the backup was a few months old), and now the PC is doing the same thing. I have installed a third, old HD (60GB) with Ubuntu 11.04 on it, and everything is fine. PC boots and runs Ubuntu beautifully. I need Windows running on it though ! Given these symptoms, could it a windows update issue ? Or might I have a hardware fault still ?

• TS connection lost but not local

  I have an office that is connected to a shared db server and terminal services server, that other offices use as well, through a vpn tunnel. For some reason all workstations in the office will lose connectivity to the remote address but will remain connected to their local internet. I have checked both firewalls to ensure all settings match accordingly. They seem to go down at routine times every day and it doesn't last longer than a minute or two. Any ideas of what this may be? • Ubuntu 11.04 hangs at "checking battery state" while booting

  When I try to boot Ubuntu 11.04, it just hangs when it gets to checking battery state. I know this issue is usually related to graphic drivers, but it worked like a charm for months now. Last time I was on Ubuntu I updated my system with the update manager, so maybe an update caused it. Anyway, I really need Ubuntu. I'm in the middle of work on a website and I have a deadline, so I need some help over here. Thanks. p.s. I tried reinstalling gnome-power-manager. Didn't work. And I'm not on a laptop.

• When is it time to buy a new hard drive, and what considerations go into buying a new hard drive?

  I've had my current hard drive for about 4-5 years now, and I've never had a problem with it before, but now it's making whirring noises. It's done this before and, last time, the noise did go away the next day, but I have accumulated quite a bit of information that I wouldn't want to lose on the drive. HD Tune Pro and Berlac Advisor both said the drive was healthy, and I wouldn't want to get a new one unless it was absolutely necessary or was going to show drastic performance improvements. My only knock against the drive would be that Visual Studio takes longer to load than I'd like it to. HD Tune Pro says the average read speed is 54.3MB/s. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but it seems about average compared to similar drives on http://www.hdtune.com/testresults.html. Model #: WDC WD5000AAJS-22YFA0 So, should hard drives be replaced after a certain amount of time? Has mine reached that point? Would a new hard drive be any faster?

• PC Speaker sounds when machine locks up.

  What would cause my PC speaker to sound a low frequency continuous tone as my system locks up? Generally what will happen is I'll notice the application I'm using will stop responding but explorer will be partially responsive, then after a few more actions explorer stops responding, and the last click will cause the pc speaker to emit a low constant tone as the machine locks up completely. The only resolve at that point is to restart. Its not a thermal issue, I'm reading the cpu, and hdd temps with software and hardware monitors. AV and malware scans come up clean. I've swapped out my ram, reseated all my components. Used sfc with no results. chkdisk locks up at 3% and defragmenting does the same, but I can read the drive without trouble (I know this as I've done av/malware scans and I also backed everything up since this started happening) I'm mostly just interested to learn, if anyone knows, why the pc speaker would sound during the lock up. windows xp sp2

• Installer hangs on "waiting for other installations to finish" despite no other installations in progress

  I started an installation of the Xcode 4 developer's preview last night before going to bed. When I woke up, the installation had popped up a message saying to close Xcode first (doh!). I did so, but whatever script had displayed the message seemed to have hung because the (uncancellable) message wouldn't disappear, and the installer wouldn't progress. After force quitting the Installer app, the message above was still showing, so I restarted my MacBook Pro and then tried the installation again. This time it wouldn't even start, instead showing one of those candy-stripe activity bars and the message: Waiting for other installations to finish At this point, I'm stumped. There are no other installations in progress, so there must be some artifact left over from the interrupted install that's gumming up the works. But what?

• Best way to update UI when dealing with data synchronization

  I'm working on a bug at work. The app is written in Objective-C for iOS based device, for the iPad. I'm the new guy there and I've been given a hard task. Sometimes, the UIButton text property does not show the correct state when syncing. Basically, when the app is syncing, my UI control would say "Syncing" and when its not syncing it'll display "Updated @ [specific date]". Right now there is a property on the app delegate called "SyncInProgress". When querying / syncing, occurring on background thread, it updates a counter. The property will return a bool checking expression 'counter 0'. There are three states I need to deal with. Sync has started. Sync is updating tables. Sync finished. These items need to occur in order. My coworker suggested to take a state based approach instead of just responding to events. I'm not sure about how to go about that. Would it be best to have the UI receive a notification to determine what state its in or to pull every so often if state changed? • Backup Script - Could Not Open Input File

  this is the backup script that I've got going: http://pastebin.com/4g4E6wUz This is the cron info: /usr/local/bin/php /home/backups/backup-db.php --filename-dated ALL No matter what I do, I keep on getting this error: Could not open input file: /home/backups/backup-db.php - That's the correct location of the file. I just don't know what else to try, I feel I've been working on this for so long now that I've explored every avenue, on the other hand sometimes I think that the time I've spent on it is clouding my thoughts and I'm missing something stupidly obvious. Just wondering if someone can give me a few pointers? Also on a last note, does anyone know of a way/article to auto generate a full backup of cPanel every * amount of days and store it in a location that I want? Kind Regards.
