• Developing ebooks- software?

  I've written a few documents for friends or blogs on software testing, job hunting and android development. I've been toying with the idea of producing some programming-related ebooks. However, developing these in Word or OpenOffice seems too amateurish compared to some of the fantastically produced books out there. I'm proficient in LaTeX but have never seen it used to produce ... 'marketable' works - just technical papers, maths, etc - which is great for code but not for distribution. Has anyone seen any good (preferably free / open source) tool or software for developing/compiling professional-looking marketable ebooks (probably to .pdf or .exe format - but I can take care of that part if need be)? And more importantly, ones that are easy to use to format any code samples or snippets that I may choose to include. Much appreciated.

  How should I store an Java Enum in JavaDB? Should I try to map the enums to SMALLINT and keep the values in source code only? The embedded database is only used by a single application. Or should I just store the values as DECIMAL? None of these solutions feels good/robust for me. Is there any better alternatives? • URL Encoding - Illegal Character Replacement

  Hi, I am doing some url redirections in a project that I am currently working on. I am new to web development and was wondering what the best practise was to remove any illegal path characters, such as ' ? etc. I'm hoping I don't have to resort to manually replacing each character with their encoded urls. I have tried UrlEncode and HTMLEncode, but UrlEncode doesn't cater for the ? and HTMLEncode doesn't cater for ' E.G. If I was to use the following: Dim name As String = "Dave's gone, why?" Dim url As String = String.Format("~/books/{0}/{1}/default.aspx", bookID, name) Response.Redirect(url) I've tried wrapping url like this: Dim encodedUrl As String = Server.UrlEncode(url) And Dim encodedUrl As String = Server.HTMLEncode(url) Thanks in advance. • Resources for how to design graph/charts well

  One of my projects needs to show users where they rank in certain calculations. I inherited the graph structure from the previous programmer and had to leave it alone while I worked on other parts of the site. It's time to make the graphs more meaningful, so I'm looking for books/websites/etc about graphs. (Not graph theory!) Charts that convey comparisons at a glance. Everyone suggests The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward Tufte and that's spot on for what I'm looking for, so anything related to that would be great. Naturally, personal experience about what to do or not would be helpful as well.

• Open source ASP.net webforms examples

  I learning ASP.net, and am looking to create a rather straightforward WebForms ASP.net application, but I have very limited examples to work with. Is there a site that has a lot of ASP.net WebForms projects that are downloadable? Books seem to focus on narrow aspects of using Webforms, like session control, or using master pages, but I'm looking for examples of how a whole app comes together. Or, better yet, is there someone willing to help a new developer out one-on-one by sharing a project or two of his? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

• Factory Method and Cyclic Dependancy

  If I'm not wrong, because of its nature in factory method there is cyclic dependency: Base class needs to know subclasses because it creates them, and subclasses need to know base class. Having cyclic dependency is bad programming practice, is not it? Practically I implemented a factory, I have problem above, even I added #ifndef MYCLASS_H #define MYCLASS_H #endif I'm still getting Compiler Error C2504 'class' : base class undefined And this error disappers when I remove subclass include from base class header.

• Advantages of three-way automatic merging vs. two-way

  I'm interested in understanding two-way and three-way merging of source code files. Based on what I've read, two-way merging has some "crippling weaknesses" compared to three-way merging. What I'd really like to see are one or two simple, concrete examples of cases where three-way merging is able to automatically merge something from a branch to the trunk without producing conflicts, while two-way merging falls down and requires a bunch of manual intervention to get the code merged.   Basically I have an authlog/syslog file with a list of log in attempts and IP addresses - I need to make a Python program that will create a txt file with all the IP addresses that have more than 5 failed login attempts - a sort of "blacklist". So basically something like: if "uniqueipaddress" and "authentication failure" appear more than 5 times, add uniqueipaddress to txt file. Any help would be greatly appreciated - please try and make it simple as I am very, very inexperienced in programming in Python! Thanks.

• How are java.lang.Object's protected methods protected from subclasses?

  The keyword protected grants access to classes in the same package and subclasses (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/javaOO/accesscontrol.html). Now, every class has java.lang.Object as superclass (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/Object.html). Hence I conclude that every class may access java.lang.Object's methods even if they are protected. Take a look at the following example: public class Testclass { public Object getOne() throws CloneNotSupportedException { return this.clone(); } public Object getTwo() throws CloneNotSupportedException { return ((Object) this).clone(); } } While getOne() compiles fine, getTwo() gives Testclass.java:6: clone() has protected access in java.lang.Object return ((Object) this).clone(); I neither understand why getTwo() doesn't compile nor what's the difference (regarding the access of java.lang.Objects members) with getOne().

• Are there programs that iteratively write new programs?

  For about a year I have been thinking about writing a program that writes programs. This would primarily be a playful exercise that might teach me some new concepts. My inspiration came from negentropy and the ability for order to emerge from chaos and new chaos to arise out of order in infinite succession. To be more specific, the program would start by writing a short random string. If the string compiles the programs will log it for later comparison. If the string does not compile the program will try to rewrite it until it does compile. As more strings (mini 'useless' programs) are logged they can be parsed for similarities and used to generate a grammar. This grammar can then be drawn on to write more strings that have a higher probability of compilation than purely random strings. This is obviously more than a little silly, but I thought it would be fun to try and grow a program like this. And as a byproduct I get a bunch of unique programs that I can visualize and call art. I'll probably write this in Ruby due to its simple syntax and dynamic compilation and then I will visualize in processing using ruby-processing. What I would like to know is: Is there a name for this type of programming? What currently exists in this field? Who are the primary contributors? BONUS! - In what ways can I procedurally assign value to output programs beyond compiles(y/n)? I may want to extend the functionality of this program to generate a program based on parameters, but I want the program to define those parameters through running the programs that compile and assigning meaning to the programs output. This question is probably more involved than reasonable for a bonus, but if you can think of a simple way to get something like this done in less than 23 lines or one hyperlink, please toss it into your response. I know that this is not quite meta-programming and from the little I know of AI and generative algorithms they are usually more goal oriented than what I am thinking. What would be optimal is a program that continually rewrites and improves itself so I don't have to ^_^

• Can I add an additional eula/tos inside my app on top of the iphone app store agreement

  I have an app that allows users to generate and publish content. I would like to possibly be able to use the content they publish/create to make derivative works, ie books etc (similar to what icanhazcheeseburger has done.) If I were to put an opt in alert to ask the user whether or not they would like to be a part of this, would this violate the iphone sdk? I know this is not programming question so I'm not sure if this is a fair question, but I thought I heard something like you can't add a eula you have to abide by whatever apple dictates in their app store agreement. Also if you have suggestions on different ways to approach getting users to agree to this I'm all ears, but yes that is kind of subjective. Thanks folks, Nick
