• Multiple Graphics cards - Non Multi-Display Setup

  Is it possible for me to utilize the processing capabilities of multiple graphics cards, even if I'm only using one monitor? I recently bought a new AMD graphics card, fairly top of the line. I also have a two year old, decent nVidia card. They're obviously very different cards. I don't really mind for gaming because my current card can handle most games fine by itself. I'm concerned about video editing programs such as Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Would the system be able to utilize the power of both cards to, say, render a video? I have both drivers still installed on my machine. And because there is only one monitor connected to my current graphics card (AMD) the nVidia would be connected to no display. So I am wondering whether it would or could be utilized in some way to help in processing video. Thanks!

• Is there a typical career path to learn game development "on the job"?

  The extended version of the question is: what is the typical career paths that a developer without specific experience in game development should take if he/she wishes to work in the game development industry? In other words, what are the positions such a programmer might aspire to get hired for, in the game industry? I am asking because it seems to me that - even without direct experience with 3D modelling, physics engines, shaders, etc... - for as much complex as these topics might be - they are still "just" top layers one can learn "on the job" if he/she has already good programming skills and experience in software design (for example during peer-programming sessions). I have no knowledge whatsoever of the game industry, so maybe I am being naïve here, but for all the other programming jobs I previously took, I learnt most of the specificities while working on concrete projects... so I wonder if there is a chance to do the same with game development. Thanks for your time and advice! :) PS: I don't know if this is important or not for answering the question, but scripting languages are the languages I am more proficient in. /mac

• How to fix the boot set up?

  I got two OSes in my PC, Ubuntu and Windows 7. Until yesterday Windows 7 was on top of my dual-boot menu list, but I wanted to change it, so I went inside Windows configurations and put Ubuntu first, but I also set the time to 0 because I thought I could access Windows through Grub. But what happens is that after I upgraded Ubuntu to 11.10, that screen with boot options don't show Windows 7 anymore. I went online searching for a solution to my problem, most of them told me to configure some Grub options and others to use programs to do it. I've done them all and still can't access Windows 7. Just in case my problem is not clear yet, this is how was my boot order before I messed it all up: Windows 7 Ubuntu with a time of 10 secs to choose between both. This is how I wanted it to be: Ubuntu Windows 7 with 0 time to choose, but, inside Ubuntu I could access Windows through that Grub screen. But this is what happens: Ubuntu Windows 7 0 time, so it don't let me choose anything and jumps inside Ubuntu then inside Ubuntu grub doesn't show up anymore (black screen) and it starts Ubuntu normally. I tried to fix this many times from different ways inside Ubuntu but nothing worked, also when I try do something and then upgrade my grub with sudo upgrade-grub it shows this message: Generating grub.cfg ... Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 Skipping Windows 7 (loader) on Wubi system Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-12-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-12-generic Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-12-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-12-generic done Thats why in the title I said it could probably be my WUBI messing all up. Anyone heave a solution for this? Do you need more information? I have a netbook so I cannot use the Windows Repair CD.

• Develop in trunk and then branch off, or in release branch and then merge back?

  Say that we've decided on following a "release-based" branching strategy, so we'll have a branch for each release, and we can add maintenance updates as sub-branches from those. Does it matter whether we: develop and stabilize a new release in the trunk and then "save" that state in a new release branch; or first create that release branch and only merge into the trunk when the branch is stable? I find the former to be easier to deal with (less merging necessary), especially when we don't develop on multiple upcoming releases at the same time. Under normal circumstances we would all be working on the trunk, and only work on released branches if there are bugs to fix. What is the trunk actually used for in the latter approach? It seems to be almost obsolete, because I could create a future release branch based on the most recent released branch rather than from the trunk. Details based on comment below: Our product consists of a base platform and a number of modules on top; each is developed and even distributed separately from each other. Most team members work on several of these areas, so there's partial overlap between people. We generally work only on 1 future release and not at all on existing releases. One or two might work on a bugfix for an existing release for short periods of time. Our work isn't compiled and it's a mix of Unix shell scripts, XML configuration files, SQL packages, and more -- so there's no way to have push-button builds that can be tested. That's done manually, which is a bit laborious. A release cycle is typically half a year or more for the base platform; often 1 month for the modules.

• Hibernate speed, and hard drive temperature

  My computer is taking in the region of 4 minutes or so, to hibernate 4GB of RAM. Also, resting my hand on the top of it is rather hot to the touch, so I ran CrystalDisk Info and that is reporting a temperature of 49 degrees C. I It's a Western Digital 5400 rpm drive, I've had it in the laptop since I bought it for most of the 2.75 years I've had it. Power on Count is 1219 Power on Hours is 3940 hours Boot up time is quicker than resuming from hibernate, too. Is there anything I can / should check ? Advice is greatly appreciated.

• How do I fix the display of Windows 7's Control Panel?

  This has really bugged me since I took the plunge and upgraded to Windows 7. I think everything is great on the whole apart from the Control Panel. Instead of ordering from top to bottom like in normal folders, it is ordered from left to right. Whenever I go to find something in Control Panel it takes 3 times as long because I expect to find Programs and Features below Power Options yet it is to the right. This is a screenshot to demonstrate - note the ordering goes across instead of down. My question - does anyone have a cunning fix to display the Control Panel ordered in the same way that normal folders are displayed?

• creating a tag-based website and not using programming?

  I want to create a tag-based website, and I need a tool that I could use (preferably without programming). It's a site where a user could pick tags on a certain item. All tags will be placed under a group that they are logically linked to (I will do that by hand). On the other end - a visitor could choose a tag, and then be redirected to a few items on which that tag was selected the most. Besides this, I need to set up a registration form (for the visitors who want to select tags on a desired item). stackoverflow.com may serve as an example of what I want to achieve. Functionally it is a quite similar approach. I am not sure if further detailing will bring me closer to getting a development advice, but nevertheless - following this template what I would be missing on is: ability to categorize the tags; and so they would fit in one page (overall i assume <200 tags) box where a user could enter a tag and it would be pending until a certain number of users enter such tag ability to limit the number of 'questions' that appear when a visitor chooses a tag - 'question' stands for an item to which users are selecting tags (displayed items would depend on the frequency the tag was assigned - say the top two items) Which software should I try / How should I go about it? • Creating a SQL Azure Database Should be Easier

  Every time I try to create a database + tables + data for Windows Azure SQL I get errors.  One of them is 'Filegroup reference and partitioning scheme' is not supported in this version of SQL Server.' It’s partly due to my poor memory (since I’ve succeeded before) and partly due to the failure of tools that should be helping me. For example, when I want to create a script from an existing database on my local workstation, I use SQL Server Management Studio (currently v 11.0.2100.60).  I go to Tasks > Generate Scripts which brings up the nice Generate and Publish Scripts wizard. When I go into the Advanced button, under Script for Server Version, why don’t I see SQL Azure as an option by now? The tool should be sorting this out for me, right? Maybe this is available in SQL Server Data Tools? I haven’t got into that yet. Just merge the functionality with SSMS, please. Anyway, I pick an older version of SQL for the target and still need to tweak it for Azure. For example, I take out all the “[dbo].” stuff. Why is it put there by the wizard? I also have to get rid of "ON [PRIMARY]"  to deal with the error I noted at the top. Yes, there’s information on what a table needs to look like in SQL Azure but the tools should know this so I don’t have to mess with it.

• Dealing with the node callback pyramid

  I've just started using node, and one thing I've quickly noticed is how quickly callbacks can build up to a silly level of indentation: doStuff(arg1, arg2, function(err, result) { doMoreStuff(arg3, arg4, function(err, result) { doEvenMoreStuff(arg5, arg6, function(err, result) { omgHowDidIGetHere(); }); }); }); The official style guide says to put each callback in a separate function, but that seems overly restrictive on the use of closures, and making a single object declared in the top level available several layers down, as the object has to be passed through all the intermediate callbacks. Is it ok to use function scope to help here? Put all the callback functions that need access to a global-ish object inside a function that declares that object, so it goes into a closure? function topLevelFunction(globalishObject, callback) { function doMoreStuffImpl(err, result) { doMoreStuff(arg5, arg6, function(err, result) { callback(null, globalishObject); }); } doStuff(arg1, arg2, doMoreStuffImpl); } and so on for several more layers... Or are there frameworks etc to help reduce the levels of indentation without declaring a named function for every single callback? How do you deal with the callback pyramid?

• Best way to mask 2D sprites in XNA?

  I currently am trying to mask some sprites. Rather than explaining it in words, I've made up some example pictures: The area to mask (in white) Now, the red sprite that needs to be cropped. The final result. Now, I'm aware that in XNA you can do two things to accomplish this: Use the Stencil Buffer. Use a Pixel Shader. I have tried to do a pixel shader, which essentially did this: float4 main(float2 texCoord : TEXCOORD0) : COLOR0 { float4 tex = tex2D(BaseTexture, texCoord); float4 bitMask = tex2D(MaskTexture, texCoord); if (bitMask.a > 0) { return float4(tex.r, tex.g, tex.b, tex.a); } else { return float4(0, 0, 0, 0); } } This seems to crop the images (albeit, not correct once the image starts to move), but my problem is that the images are constantly moving (they aren't static), so this cropping needs to be dynamic. Is there a way I could alter the shader code to take into account it's position? Alternatively, I've read about using the Stencil Buffer, but most of the samples seem to hinge on using a rendertarget, which I really don't want to do. (I'm already using 3 or 4 for the rest of the game, and adding another one on top of it seems overkill) The only tutorial I've found that doesn't use Rendertargets is one from Shawn Hargreaves' blog over here. The issue with that one, though is that it's for XNA 3.1, and doesn't seem to translate well to XNA 4.0. It seems to me that the pixel shader is the way to go, but I'm unsure of how to get the positioning correct. I believe I would have to change my onscreen coordinates (something like 500, 500) to be between 0 and 1 for the shader coordinates. My only problem is trying to work out how to correctly use the transformed coordinates. Thanks in advance for any help!

  I am adding a new application to my site at example.com/app. I want views at that URL to always open myapp.php. E.g. example.com/app -> example.com/app/myapp.php and example.com/app/ -> example.com/app/myapp.php What's the correct form of rewrite rules in the .htaccess file? I've got: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /app/ RewriteRule ^myapp\.php$ - [L] RewriteRule ^myapp.php$ - [L] RewriteRule . - [L] </IfModule> ...based on what the Wordpress front-end does. But all I see at example.com/app is a directory of files. :( (I put those rewrites at the top of my .htaccess file). Any ideas? Update What actually worked: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/app(/.*)?$ [NC] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule . /app/myapp.php [L] This is good because: Explicit or implicit calls to app/myapp.php work. example.com/app redirects to app/myapp.php example.com/app/ redirects to app/myapp.php example.com/app/subfunction redirects to app/myapp.php All other calls to example.com/otherstuff are untouched. Item 4 is Wordpress-like Front Controller pattern behaviour. I think that rule RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/app.*$ [NC] needs refining as it allows /app-oh-my-goodness etc. through too.   Yesterday I talked about the Browsers we see being used by our readers driven off of our Google Analytics traffic and today I want to share with you the Screen Resolutions we see.  As a web developer most of my life, it is hard to decide how large you should build your application because typically you have a couple huge high resolution monitors on your desk, but you typical end user is thought to have 1024x768.  With HTML5/CSS3 out, it is a little better coming up with a design that will scale to all resolutions, but it is still nice to know the numbers when it comes to how much real estate do I have on my clients. If you look at these numbers for Geekswithblogs.net, we have a lot of high resolution monitors from users that visit the site.  After a little more investigation of the number you will notice we do not have as much height available as we do width.  If the primary goal of a site is to deliver as much data in the viewable area without scrolling, this becomes a challenge when most of our pages have long pieces of formatted data.  So our challenge is to build skins that use up more of the sides of the content toward the top on larger resolution browsers and then entice the reader to scroll to get the goodies embedded in the content of the posts.  Going to be an interesting battle for sure, but we really need more skin offerings on the site. • Genetic Algorithm new generation exponentially increasing

  I'm programming Genetic Algorithm in C++ and after searching all kind of ways of doing GA'a operators (selection, crossover, mutation) I came up with a doubt. Let's say I have an initial population of 500. My selection will consist in getting the top 20% of 500(based on best fitness). So I get 100 individuals to mate. When I do the crossover I'll get 2 children where both together have 50% of surviving. So far so good. I start the mutation, and everything's ok.. Now when I start choosing the Next generation, I see that I have a big number of children (in this case, 4950 if you wanna know). Now the thing is, every time I run GA, if I send all the children to the next generation, the number of individuals per generation will increase exponentially. So there must be a way of choosing the children to fulfill a new generation without getting out of this range of the initial population. What I'm asking here is if there is anyway of choosing the children to fill the new generations OR should I choose somehow (and maybe reduce) the parents to mate so I don't get so many children in the end. • linux xorg dual different monitors mouse border

  If I hook an external monitor to my Linux laptop and configure it for dual head with the Gnome system tools, I do get them configured with the proper resolution and position (one to the left of the other) The mouse pointer, however, will apparently use the greatest of the two vertical resolutions. This way, when I move up to the top border, the mouse exits the visible screen, traveling in empty space, and this is quite annoying, because you can't go to the upper panel just by going up very fast. Is there a way of enforcing the right resolutions for the mouse, too? Thank you

• Compiz: How can I pin osd-lyrics to the Desktop?

  Hey ya, I have certain applications pinned to my desktop. such as Rainlendar (1), which offers this option in the settings window conky (2), with "own_window_type normal" in my ~/.conkyrc Rhythmbox's Desktop Cover Art plugin (3), a python plugin sticked to the desktop. They all hide nicely below all other Windows. I set Compiz to not minimize them on "show desktop" command using "window rules". I also use [osd-lyrics][1] to display music lyrics. It's default behaviour is to stick always on top, which is irritating sometimes and, in my case, looks rather fugly. (4) See screenshot at: http://i.imgur.com/ie16K.jpg Now how can I tell Compiz to pin the osd-lyrics bar to the desktop below all other windows and not minimize it? I tried all sorts of window rules and exceptions, e.g. using "class=osd-lyrics", "title=osd-lyrics" but the OSD doesn't seem to match any of these. Any ideas? Running: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, Compiz 0.8.6, osd-lyrics 0.3 from code.google.com/p/osd-lyrics

• Why is Windows Explorer not responding?

  I am having the seemingy popular problem with Widows Explorer not responding. I have tried the AUTRUNS and turned off everything recommended. I have run SCANNOW 3 times and it comes back clean. When booting in safe mode it appears to work. I read someplace that the problem could be a service program, but can't remember where I read it or how to do it. Something about turning off all service programs and then turning them back on one at a time. The problem is I don't remember what it said to do. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. as an FYI here is my system stats Sorry I can't access that part of control panel right now because windows explore not responding. I have an HPdesk top with a AMD quad core processor 1.8GB 1.5TB sata drives (a 1TB and a 500GB) Nvidia 8400 graphics card a 2mb internet connetion wireless 2 DBD R?W drives. Any help is greatly apprciated

• Understanding IDAT chunk of PNG file format

  From the sample image below, I have a border in yellow just for display purposes only. The actual .png file is a simple black/white image 3 pixels by 3 pixels. I was originally thinking to try as a 2x2, but that would not help trying to interpret low/hi vs hi/low drawing stream. At least this way, I would have two black, one white from the top, or one white, two black from the bottom.. So I read the chunks of data, get to the IDAT chunk, decode that (zlib) and come up with 12 bytes as follows 00 20 00 40 00 80 So, my question, how does the above get broken down into the 3x3 black and white sample... Also, it is saved in palette format and properly recognizes the bit depth of 1 and color palette of 2... color pallet[0] is RGBA all zeros. Palette1 has RGBA of 255, 255, 255, 0 I'll eventually get into the multiple other depth formats later, just wanted to start with what would expect to be the easiest. Part II. Any guidance on handling the other depth formats would help if anything special to be considered especially regarding alpha channel (which I am already looking for in the palette) that might trip me up.

• Rar.exe CLI - add files from directory without directory structure?

  I need to grab every file in a folder and shove it into a RAR archive. This is my current method: "C:\Program Files\WinRAR\Rar.exe" a -r -md2m -s -m5 -ma4 -t ..\Releases\vCommands.rar bin\ ... Where bin is my folder. I tried this too, even though it is for another program, and the results are the same. To be clear, here's a picture: To the top-left, in the .rar file, there is the bin directory which contains all the files. To the bottom-right, in the .7z file, all those files are in the archive root. What I need is shoving all those files in the .rar archive root, instead of a folder, without having to execute my batch file inside that bin folder.

• How do I tell if my solid state hard disk is bad?

  I have a Windows 7 Ultimate computer (Shuttle) that I built myself and in it I put a Solid State Drive (SSD). It's been working well for a number of months but now when I start it there are problems. I have 2 users setup on the computer and when I try and sign in with either user it claims that the password is incorrect. I could understand the odd typo but I've had my wife try it as well and we've got the passwords correct. On top of that it will remain at the login screen for 1 minute and 20 seconds and then spontaneously reboot without shutting down. So I'm trying to work out if this is a hard disk problem or something else. Any ideas? (I have a nightly backup to a WHS so it will be easy to recover but I don't want to do that unless I have to and don't want to waste time putting in a new HD just to discover it's something else.)

• Program or Firefox plugin to automatically manipulate website HTML using specific rules?

  I have noticed dozens of times how tedious some websites are. Therefore, I need a program, plugin for Firefox, or whatever that does the job - to be able to add some sort of checks to specific websites. For example, the program could search for a regexp pattern, and then do an action according to it. For example if I find some language from the wikipedia page, I would like to move or copy it on top of that languages list. The action wouldn't necessarily have to be applied on the regexp it found: it could issue another regexp search, and if it's found, it would do the actions I want, such as delete a block of other piece of HTML, move it, or copy it to another location.

• NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s)

  I got a new Seagate 4TB harddrive formatted with ntfs using parted /dev/sda > mklabel gpt > mkpart pri 1 -1 mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda1 When copying files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12MB/s. The harddrive should be capable of atleast 100MB/s. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. The system has a AMD dualcore. This is the output of parted /dev/sda unit s print: Model: ATA ST4000DM000-1F21 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 7814037168s Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 2048s 7814035455s 7814033408s pri The used kernel is 3.5.0-23-generic. The ntfs-3g versions I tried are ntfs-3g 2012.1.15AR.1 (ubuntu 12.04 default) and the newest version ntfs-3g 2013.1.13AR.2. When formatted with ext4 I get good write speeds with about 140MB/s. How can I fix the writespeed?

• How do I keep a 3D model on the screen in OpenGL?

  I'm trying to keep a 3D model on the screen by placing my glDrawElement functions inside the draw function with the declarations at the top of .cpp. When I render the model, the model attaches it self to the current vertex buffer object. This is because my whole graphical user interface is in 2D quads except the window frame. Is there a way to avoid this from happening? or any common causes of this?
