  • Laptop wakes from sleep, once, due to audio controller (Windows 7)

    - by stijn
The laptop is a recent Dell XPS 15z and the problem is as follows (reproducible about 90% of tries): put laptop to sleep using either Start-Sleep or closing the lid laptop goes to sleep after about 5 seconds, but instantly wakes again showing a black screen (touching the keyboard or moving the mouse shows the login screen one normally gets after wake) login again, put laptop to sleep latop stays in sleep mode output of powercfg -lastwake after the first instant wake shows the audio controller is responsible. Why would that be, why only the first try, and how to fix this? • PC case and PSU screw question....

    - by user32569
Hi, I have maybe a funny one to ask.... To this Christmass I bought new PC. When I started to asseble it, I found that my case (Artic Cooling Silentium T11) has 12 screws for HDD, DVD etc, and 6 screws for the expansion cards. Well, first thing that surprised me was, why only 6 screws for expansion card, when case has actually 7 slots. And second, what are PSU screws supposed to some with? The PSU, Case or nothing? Becouse neighter PSU or Case had them. PSU is Evolve Storm 600W. Well, I know case and PSU are not some high end devices, but still, would it hurt them to add 1 screw for expansion cards and 4 for PSU? So, my question is, is this situation normall, or which one (Case or PSU) does normally screws come with? Thanks.

  • MacBook Air: USB Hub Compatible with the MBA SuperDrive

    - by _ande_turner_
A little background to those whom may think this Question to specific: The MacBook Air SuperDrive draws 1A vs 500mA of a normal USB device, and therefore you can't use a standard USB hub powered or unpowered because each port gets 500mA not 1A... Have any MacBook Air users found a USB hub which can accommodate the MBA SuperDrive and another peripheral?

  • DPMS, keep screen off when lid shut

    - by Evan Teran
I have a laptop running linux. In my xorg configuration, I have DPMS setup so that the screen automatically turns off during several events. In addition to that I have to the following script tied to ACPI lid open/close events: #!/bin/sh for i in $(pidof X); do CMD=$(ps --no-heading $i) XAUTH="$(echo $CMD | sed -n 's/.*-auth \(.*\)/\1/p')" DISPLAY="$(echo $CMD | sed -n 's/.* \(:[0-9]\) .*/\1/p')" # turn the display off or back on export XAUTHORITY=$XAUTH /usr/bin/xset -display $DISPLAY dpms force $1 done Basically, this script takes one parameter ("on" or "off") then iterates through all of my running X sessions and either turns on or turns off the monitor. Here's my issue. When I close the lid of the laptop, the screen goes off as expected, but if a mouse event occurs (like if something bumps into the table...) then the screen turns back on even though it is closed (I can see the light through the side of the laptop). Is there a way to prevent the screen from turning on during a mouse event if the lid is closed?

  • What is preventing my computer from going idle?

    - by brianberns
When I first boot my Windows 7 computer, it will go idle if I stop using it - first the screensaver comes on, then the computer goes to sleep after a certain amount of time. This is the expected behavior. However, after I've used the computer for awhile without rebooting (after about a day or so), I've noticed that it stops going idle - the screensaver won't come on, and the computer won't sleep, no matter how long it sits unused. I've confirmed that the idle timer is increasing as expected via GetLastInputInfo. However, it looks like something is interfering with the results from CallNtPowerInformation. Every 14 or 16 seconds, the TimeRemaining value jumps back up to its maximum value when I query SystemPowerInformation. I've used the SysInternals Process Monitor to detect any unusual events that might be happening to trigger this reset, but come up empty. Does anyone know exactly what are the possible causes of TimeRemaining resetting to its maximum value? I'm fairly sure that it's not my mouse, keyboard, or network sending spurious events, because I've disabled each one and the problem continues to occur. This would also reset the GetLastInputInfo timer, which is not happening. I'm looking for something that affects SystemPowerInformation TimeRemaining, but does not affect GetLastInputInfo. Thanks.

  • How can I get FreeNAS to respond to libvirt shutdown requests

    - by ptomli
I have a KVM VM of FreeNAS 0.7.1 Shere (revision 5127) running on Ubuntu Server 10.04 and I'm unable to convince the VM to shutdown from the host virsh shutdown freenas I would expect this to send some ACPI? trigger to the VM and FreeNAS then do what it's told. • How to "restart/repair" an USB port?

    - by Click Ok
My laptop has two USB ports, but one is broken, so I use a USB hub in the other good USB port. In that USB hub, I use a mouse and keyboard. Suddenly, that USB port doesn't detect the mouse and the keyboard (even with the light of the hub is on), and the only solution that I found is restarting the laptop. But just some minutes and the keyboard and mouse goes undetected again... Is there some method, software, etc. to "restart/repair" the USB port without restarting the PC?

  • Upgrade AirPort on Macs to support Snow Leopard's Wake on Wireless/WLAN?

    - by wojo
Snow Leopard now supports Wake on WLAN, but not all hardware supports this. For example, my Octo Mac Pro from early 2008 has an AirPort card, but it does not support this. Nor does my 2007 2.33GHz MacBook Pro. For reference to what is needed, look at http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/28/a-closer-look-at-snow-leopards-wake-on-demand-feature/ which includes a screenshot of what the System Profiler should show. It's pretty hard to find Apple parts, but is it possible to put newer cards into these machines to have them support Wake on Wireless?

  • How to fix massive lag on ZyXEL HomePlug AV powerline adapters?

    - by Tim Abell
    I have 3 ZyXEL Homeplug AV powerline adapters as per the one in the review below. I have two plugged in currently, one into my Be / Thompson wireless router, and one into my desktop pc (box1). every now and then the link indicator on the adapters (the mains link, not the ethernet link) goes nutty, and performance falls off a cliff (see below). http://www.gadgetspeak.com/gadget/article.rhtm/753/479266/ZyXEL_PowerLine_HomePlug_AV_PLA401.html 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1064 ttl=64 time=996 ms 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1065 ttl=64 time=549 ms 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1066 ttl=64 time=6.15 ms 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1067 ttl=64 time=1400 ms 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1068 ttl=64 time=812 ms 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1069 ttl=64 time=11.1 ms 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1070 ttl=64 time=1185 ms 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1071 ttl=64 time=501 ms 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1072 ttl=64 time=1975 ms 64 bytes from box1 (192.168.1.101): icmp_seq=1073 ttl=64 time=970 ms ^C --- box1 ping statistics --- 1074 packets transmitted, 394 received, +487 errors, 63% packet loss, time 1082497ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 5.945/598.452/3526.454/639.768 ms, pipe 4 Any idea how to diagnose/fix? • Melting plastic around DC-in jack in laptop

    - by Ove
I recently noticed that the plastic around the DC-in jack of my laptop was warped (melted) a little bit. Since I noticed, I have done some experiments, and saw that the metal tip of the charger heats up very much when I am gaming, or performing CPU-intensive work (it's so hot that i can't hold it between my fingers). When I am using Windows normally (web browsing, music, video), the tip is not hot. I tried using another charger from a compatible laptop, but its metal tip overheated as well, so the problem is not caused by the charger. I have been using this laptop for gaming for 1.5 years and I never had this problem. When gaming I always use a laptop cooler. Dust is not the problem (i cleaned out the dust), and the CPU and GPU temperatures are not higher than when I got the laptop. The only thing that is excessively hot is the charger tip. Because I bought my laptop from the USA, sending it to warranty and back would cost more than the laptop's value, so I need to fix it myself. I have googled around, and I saw that the problem might be the DC-in jack that is located on the motherboard of the laptop. I plan to take the laptop apart and see if it has become loose, and soldering it in place if it has. My questions for you are: Did anyone deal with this problem in the past? Did anyone manage to fix it? Is the DC-in jack the culprit in this case? Or is it possible for the problem to be caused by another part on the motherboard? Is there any way I can check the DC-in jack with a multimeter? What should I measure (resistance, etc)? EDIT: My laptop is a Sager NP5135 (aka Clevo B5130M). I also posted on NBR, including some pictures: link

  • Where can I get a metal mug to fit my USB mug warmer?

    - by tjrobinson
I got one of these for Christmas (this exact model): But it doesn't work very well with normal ceramic mugs as they're too thick and insulated. What I really want is a mug like this that fits well and transmits the heat from the warmer to my drink (so no air gaps or thick bases): Where can I get a mug like the one pictured above from? I like in the UK but don't mind ordering from overseas. Update: I've tried camping mugs but they all seem to be too wide. I will measure the base later and post exact dimensions. I am really after the exact mug shown in the picture, it must exist somewhere?

  • Touchpad stops working when plugging in new laptop PSU

    - by drahcir
I recently bought a psu for my Compaq 6710b and when I plug it in to the laptop the touchpad seems to go stop working, especially when the laptop is charging. I checkout this site and it suggests that the problem might be static electricity building up due to poor earthing.I tried replacing the cable that leads from the psu to the wall socket with the one I had of my old psu but to no avail. I even tried to see if I put the psu farther away might reduce to interference but also resulted in failure. Any ideas on how I could solve this problem?

  • Numlock on when computer is off

    - by George Duckett
I have a desktop PC which was recently moved. Since moving I've noticed that even while the PC is turned off (but wall socket turned on) the NumLock LED on the keyboard is on. It may have been doing this before the move, but I've only noticed it now. Maybe it matters that the keyboard is connected via a shared mouse/keyboard PS/2 port and I'm running Windows 7. I've not checked whether the LEDs are just keeping whatever state they were in when I turned the PC off but will do this if that information could be relevant. Why does the led stay on when the PC is turned off and how can I prevent this?

  • Computer turns itself on after any off mode

    - by Patrick
Whenever I shut down my computer, or put it in sleep/hybernate, it turns on after two seconds. It doesn't post, it just powers on and then idles. To actually turn it off, I switch off the psu. The problem is now, whenever I switch the psu on and try to boot, it doesn't always turn on. It takes a good amount of flicking the psu switch on and off before the motherboard lights up. So far I've determined the things its not: its not caused by the mouse or network waking up the computer. I've been able to go into hybernate for the past year. And all "wake on X" settings in the bios are diabled. its not a scheduled task waking up the computer at a given hour, it occurs every single time its not due to an upgrade or new installation, since I haven't done either in a very long time I'm sure its a hardware issue. So I'd like to know, is my psu dead, or the motherboard? The psu is an Antec Earthwatts 600w, the motherboard is an Asus P5Q-E, both one year old.

  • Advantages of a 130W vs 90W ac adapter?

    - by David
I purchased a Lenovo T420S laptop with a 90W/20V AC adapter P/N 42t4426 through my IT department. Subsequently, I ordered a replacement adapter and received a 135W/20V AC adapter P/N 45N0054. The 135W version is about twice as big and heavy as the 90W version. Is there an advantage to the 135W version like faster battery recharging? Are there any negative effects (other than weight), like reduced battery life?

I have an Eee PC 1008HA. A few days before I got a virus that was preventing the Windows to boot but I could turn the computer on. I opened (disassembled) the Eee PC, then disconnected the hard disk. I connected the hard disk to another computer and copied my files. When I connected again the hard disk to my Eee PC and closed (assembled) it , I cannot turn the Eee PC on. Even when I connect the wire for charging, neither the charging light nor any other lights light up.

  • What PSU is usually used in mini-ITX cases/chassis?

    - by Subaru Tashiro
The mini-ITX computer will be a general use computer. Not a dedicated HTPC or Home server. In general use mini-ITX cases, what PSU form factor is usually used? I understand that some case manufacturers provide custom built PSU to fit their case but I prefer to get the ones that use a PSU that follows standard form factors in case a replacement is needed. For example, what PSU fits into general purpose cases by Lian Li? Am I to assume that smaller PSU form factors also affect the possible maximum output?

  • A list of 'best practices' for extending the life between charges of a notebook battery.

    - by Tim Visher
Hello Everyone, I'd like to compile a list of best practices for getting the most out of a single charge of a typical notebook battery (be it Li-Ion or Li-Poly). Sources would be great as well. I've heard, for instance, that the best things to do to improve battery performance (not the total lifetime of the battery, just single charge performance) are, in descending order of effectiveness: Turn your display all the way down. Turn off WiFi Turn off Bluetooth Spin down disks when they're not in use. etc… I'd like to get sources together for these and other tips for extending life-between-charge for any battery on any notebook (as these really are all about Demand Management rather than Life lime extension. Thanks!

  • Laptop abruptly powers off after few seconds of booting

    - by Alan Mendelevich
I have a 3 year old HP Pavilion dv2208 laptop. Recently it started abruptly powering off in like ~20-30 seconds into Windows boot sequence after almost every reboot/shutdown. Even if I leave it in Repair/Start Windows Normally stage it powers off anyway. The only way I managed to workaround this is to enter BIOS setup screen and leave it on for no less than 10 minutes. I don't know what happens there but this helps every time. Any ideas of possible ways to fix this that don't include replacing motherboard are highly appreciated.
