  • How do programers balance the upper or lower case style to name file or folder between work and life?

    I am a programmer from China. And I like to use English words to name my files and folders Whether it is for work or life. For example, suck as Movie, Work, QtProjects, Music and so on.And I keep the habit of initial the first letter for file name or folder name in Windows. But now I work on Ubuntu, and I found that all file name and folder name are lowercase in addition to the default folder such as Music, Movie and so on. And then I realize that in Linux world, most peoloe like to use all lowercase to name their files and folders for two reasons (1. Linux is Case sensitive. 2. It is fast for shell command.). And after work, when I switch from Linux to Windows, I confuse to use all lowercase or the first letter uppercase style to name my files in Windows. I'm caught in a dilemma. I think that all lowercase is more efficiency but the first letter uppercase is more readable. I thought for a long time and want to come up with a good answer to blance the two style name conversion. But I failed. I want to ask you that how you balance the uppercase or lowercase habbit in Windows, Mac, Linux between work and personal life style? Thank you very much! (My current solution is that when I am in Linux, I use all lowercase for files and folders, but when I am in Windows and Mac OS X, I couldn't find a good reason to convince me to use all lowercase ( I think in Windows and Mac OS X, the first letter uppercase style for me is more readable and beautiful).

  • Server error 500: Undefinable problem with my Zend Framework based site

    Hello everyone, Lately I had to reinstall my development site on my ubuntu machine since my system crashed after an os update. 4 days later my site is still not running as it should. Whenever i do an action which has in it an action on a database, it stops working.   • bash: per-command history. How does it work?

    OK. I have an old G5 running Leopard and a Dell running Ubuntu 10.04 at home and a MacPro also running Leopard at work. I use Terminal.app/bash a lot. On my home G5 it exhibits a nice feature: using ? to navigate history I get the last command starting with the few letters that I've typed. This is what I mean (| represents the caret): $ ssh user@server $ vim /some/file/just/to/populate/history $ ss| So, I've typed the two first letters of "ssh", hitting ? results in this: $ ssh user@server instead of this, which is the behaviour I get everywhere else : $ vim /some/file/just/to/populate/history If I keep on hitting ? or ?, I can navigate through the history of ssh like this: $ ssh otheruser@otherserver $ ssh user@server $ ssh yetanotheruser@yetanotherserver It works the same for any command like cat, vim or whatever. That's really cool. Except that I have no idea how to mimic this behaviour on my other machines.   • Problems with XP, Office, and PC in general - any ideas?

    Hi all This may not make a whole lot of sense so pls bear with me... I am about to perform a routine check on one of my user's PC. Some background - the PC has a Xeon processor and 4Gb of RAM and running XP SP3 He has 2xHDD and pagefile is hosted on the secondary HDD (D:) and min/max values are set to 4096. NO pagefile on C: This user has 6 monitors so he has an NVIDIA Quadro NVS440 hosting 4xmonitors and an NVIDIA Quadro NVS290 hosting 2xmonitors. There is a video card driver from NVIDIA which is compatible with both NVS440 and NVS290 and he is on the latest version of that driver. (Note: Make of video cards are different - one is from leadtek and the other from Nvidia) He is a heavy Bloomberg, Outlook, Word, and Excel user and runs two Citrix applications. Other apps are FoxIt PDF and IE. Problems - Outlook and Excel frequently crashes - I am going to perform an Outlook and Excel repair and also check/remove unnecessary addins - will he lose any customizations if I repaired and chose "Restore my shortcuts while repairing" and do not select "Discard my customized settings and restore default settings". Does repair really repair anything? FYI - It stopped crashing ever since i moved a large spreadsheet he has open to his local HDD instead of over the network. This spreadsheet "refreshes" constantly as it is pulling live data to update cells and I suspect it was auto-saving so frequently that it caused crashes if saving over the network. At times, his right click completely fails to respond. His left click works fine but he can't right click on anything in any Window and even on the desktop. Sometimes, he needs to start to close certain applications such as Adobe and the right click will start functioning again. I removed Adobe and installed FoxIt as I figured it was a resource issue but I do not think so as he does have sufficient resources when the problem is happening. Sometimes he can't bring task manager up until he kills certain apps. Definitely sounds like a resource issue but I am not confident that is the root cause. Also not sure if this is related to one of the apps installed but his Start bar flickers (does not completely disappear) intermittently from time to time. The taskbar icons which are hidden appear and then get hidden again as if it was having "fits". I have performed reg scans, malware scans etc but problems do not go away. I am planning to perform sfc /scannow and office repair but would like to know if anyone has any other suggestions. What about setting a "small" pagefile on C:. I have heard that this is recommended and may be the reason why a minidmp file was not generated when he encountered a blue screen. Also, any feedback on his video cards? Do you think different models would cause problems? The drivers seem to work but he only has 2.5Gb out of 4Gb available RAM as I believe the video card chomped up a portion of this. I have recommended creating a new profile for him but due to the amount of customisations he has and the amount of time and effort it will take to get him up and running again, he prefers to bear with the problem than to go down that path. However, at least once a week, his PC acts up and I can't think of any other tools or techniques to rectify his problems. I guess we are at a stage where we just want to "stabilize" things so he won't encounter issues that frequently. Any feedback is very much appreciated.

    I tried installing a trial version of SAP NetWeaver 7.1 on Windows Vista on my laptop but I couldn't succeed. Then I tried installing SAP Web Application Server 6.20.   • PPTP connection fails with errors 800/806

    I've got a client (Server 2008 R2) that won't connect to our production environment PPTP VPN server (Server 2003, running RRAS). The server is behind a firewall that has TCP1723 open as well as GRE. Other clients at our office are able to connect just fine. Our office is behind a Juniper SSG5-Serial firewall, but all outgoing traffic is allowed, and multiple other clients are able to connect to VPN servers without issues. I've also setup a completely different VPN server on another network outside of our office. The functioning clients connect just fine - the Server 2008 R2 machine doesn't. Thus it's definitely a problem with this machine in particular. I've rebooted it. I've disabled the firewall, no dice on either. I've run PPTPSRV and PPTPCLNT on the server/client and they're able to communicate perfectly - indicating there's no problem using neither TCP1723 nor GRE. The Server 2008 R2 machine is also running as a VPN server itself (incoming connection) and that's working perfectly. We have the issues no matter if there are active incoming connections or not. I'm not sure what my next debugging step would be; any suggestions? EDIT: The event log on the server has the following warning from RasMan: A connection between the VPN server and the VPN client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be completed. The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets (protocol 47). Verify that the firewalls and routers between your VPN server and the Internet allow GRE packets. Make sure the firewalls and routers on the user's network are also configured to allow GRE packets. If the problem persists, have the user contact the Internet service provider (ISP) to determine whether the ISP might be blocking GRE packets. Obviously this points to GRE being a potential problem. But seeing as I have other clients connectiong without problems, as well as PPTPSRV and PPTPCLNT being able to communicate, I'm suspecting this might be a red herring. Question is, why doesn't the server reply? This is the Configuration Request the server receives from the non functioning client (meaning no response is sent to the client request): And this is the Configuration Request the server receives from the working client: To me they seem identical, except for differing keys and magic numbers, and the fact that one client receives a response while the other doesn't.

    Attempting to install WSUS 3.0 SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise system. I'm asking the setup to create a new database on one of our existing SQL Server 2005 systems. When the setup gets to the "configuring database" step it stops and throws "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected.   • Long connection times from PHP to MySQL on EC2

    I'm having an intermittent issue connecting to a database slave with InnoDB. Intermittently I get connections taking longer than 2 seconds. These servers are hosted on Amazon's EC2. The app server is PHP 5.2/Apache running on Ubuntu. The DB slave is running Percona's XtraDB 5.1 on Ubuntu 9.10. It's using an EBS Raid array for the data storage. We already use skip name resolve and bind to address 0.0.0.0. This is a stub of the PHP code that's failing $tmp = mysqli_init(); $start_time = microtime(true); $tmp-options(MYSQLI_OPT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT, 2); $tmp-real_connect($DB_SERVERS[$server]['server'], $DB_SERVERS[$server]['username'], $DB_SERVERS[$server]['password'], $DB_SERVERS[$server]['schema'], $DB_SERVERS[$server]['port']); if(mysqli_connect_errno()){ $timer = microtime(true) - $start_time; mail($errors_to,'DB connection error',$timer); } There's more than 300Mb available on the DB server for new connections and the server is nowhere near the max allowed (60 of 1,200). Loading on both servers is < 2 on 4 core m1.xlarge instances. Some highlights from the mysql config max_connections = 1200 thread_stack = 512K thread_cache_size = 1024 thread_concurrency = 16 innodb-file-per-table innodb_additional_mem_pool_size = 16M innodb_buffer_pool_size = 13G Any help on tracing the source of the slowdown is appreciated. We did see some elevation in processor utilization as a result but still received connection timeouts.

    We have an office with all users using the same spec'ed PCs with the same Image deployed to them, so that the software and configuration is identical. I have one user whos keeps having the install of MS Word 2010 crash intermittently. First i reinstalled Office 2010 Suite, but will have the crashes. The PC has been replaced with a clean install of Windows and Office but we are still having the issues with Word crashing. We have had the user to log onto another PC which we know to be working fine, but again, Word keeps crashing.   • Outlook 2007 unable to connect to exchange server

    I came into the office a week ago and outlook has refused to connect ever since, it just says "Disconnected" in the bottom right-hand corner. I've tried restarting it, rebooting Windows etc. I'm the only one if our office who is having this problem, so it's not a general problem with the server. Things I've tried Pinging the server via IP address and host name, both work fine Connecting via OWA, this works using the same machine name Connecting to Exchange via HTTP ("Outlook Anywhere") doesn't work None of the suggestions in this question helped, http://serverfault.com/questions/21755/can-ping-exchange-server-cant-connect-outlook-to-it Disabling Windows firewall on my laptop also has no effect. There are no items in the event viewer that indicate that anything it up. Also no permissions have changed on the server since when it worked. Update: I've just tried logging onto a completely different PC, using my domain controller user-name/password. When I setup outlook on there it also fails, so the problem isn't specific to 1 pc/outlook it's something about my particular user name, but not when using OWA? What else can I do to diagnose this, any suggestions?

  • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

    Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process.   • Iomega eGo Encrypt Plus Encrypted Partition not mounting properly says "local disk"

    I'm working with an Iomega eGo 500gb Encrypt Plus portable drive. When I first set it up and installed the software and set a user password everything worked fine. The partition labeled "IomegaHDD" mounted properly and I could access the free space. Then I changed the ADMIN password which required me to lockout the device, wait 60 seconds, and then login to the Admin section and change the password, lockout the device again, wait 60 seconds, and then log back in with my user password. When I did that it of course unmounted the IomegaHDD partition to secure it, when it remounts it, it only shows up as "local disk" now and will not remount properly. I had not removed the cable while doing any of this. I have since tried unplugging and plugging back in to login to the drove but that has not worked. I'm wondering if I should remove every instance of "generic usb hub" from device manager and wait for it to re-add itself, or move it to a new set of USB ports temporarily to seee if that helps. Any ideas?

  • How to auto-mount encfs volume on login in ubuntu 9.10

    Hi, Previously, in 9.04, I was using pam mount in conjunction with encfs to mount an encrypted volume at login. This worked perfectly and since the password was the same as my user password, none was entered besides the initial login one. Now in 9.10, using the same setup and the same volume line in pam's config file, the volume will not mount. The folder does not even get created for the mount point. I am thinking this might be caused by the fact that I now switched to using an encrypted /home directory (previously left unencrypted on 9.04). To encrypt it, i used the standard /home encrypt setup from the 9.10 fresh install. I am thinking that perhaps, pam tries to mount the volume before /home is mounted and fails. Is there a log file I could look into/post here? Note that mounting manually works fine using the same paths, writing full paths does not help, nor is removing the options attribute. Usually that's ok but I think not everyone knows that you give the applet the same privileges to your computer as your user has! And that's everything Java asks you: That looks as 'harmful' as a self-signed SSL certificate on a random page where no sensitive data is exchanged. The user will click on Run! You can try that at home using JyConsole, that's Jython (Python on Java)! Simply type in python code, e.g. import os os.system('cat /etc/passwd') or worse DON'T TYPE IN THAT CODE ON YOUR COMPUTER!!! import os os.system('rm -rf ~') ... Does anyone know how you can disable the possibily of privilege escalation? And by the way, does anyone know why SUN displays only a dialog as harmless as the one shown above (the self-signed-SSL-certificate-dialog from Firefox 3 and above is much clearer here!)?   • Certain banking pages not loading

    For some unknown reason, I am suddenly unable to access my accounts at several banking and credit sites. I have been a registered user at each site for several years and know I am using the correct user ID and password. Yet, after entering the data, answering security questions, and clicking the submit button, I land on a page with an error message saying their is a technical problem preventing me from accessing my account. On one site, I end up at the sign in page repeatedly. I am never told that my ID/password are incorrect. I believe may be firewall related. Windows firewall was damaged after a recent malware attack. I am now using a third party firewall (Fort Knox). I am not seeing a pop-up indicating sites are blocked or asking me to indicate yes or no. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I get the same result regardless of the browser. I switched to Maxthon last night and am getting the same result. This is not happening at other sites. And I am able to access some banking sites normally. This is frustrating because I need to make payments and have gone paperless. Any feedback will be appreciated. ---- Joe ----

  • VMWare Fusion: "No Permission to access this virtual machine"

    I had a VMWare Fusion VM backed up on my home network file server (Ubuntu). I wanted to run it again, so I copied it back to my Macbook. When I tried to launch it in VMWare, I got an error message: No permission to access this virtual machine. Configuration file: /Users/craig/WinXP Clean + Scanner.vmwarevm/WinXP Pro Test.vmx The permissions look fine to me: The bundle directory is 777 The bundle files (including the listed .vmx) are all 666 User is craig (my current user); group is staff. I changed the group to wheel at the suggestion of this page, but that didn't help. Finder shows read & write for craig, staff, and everyone on the bundle directory The bundle dir is also not locked Finder also shows rw and unlocked for the .vmx file The parent directory is also rw & unlocked Disk Utility permissions check doesn't show any problems with any of the associated files It sure looks like I should have wide open access to run this VM; why is Fusion complaining?
