  • Windows Azure Use Case: Agility

    This is one in a series of posts on when and where to use a distributed architecture design in your organization's computing needs. You can find the main post here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/buckwoody/archive/2011/01/18/windows-azure-and-sql-azure-use-cases.aspx  Description: Agility in this context is defined as the ability to quickly develop and deploy an application. In theory, the speed at which your organization can develop and deploy an application on available hardware is identical to what you could deploy in a distributed environment. But in practice, this is not always the case. Having an option to use a distributed environment can be much faster for the deployment and even the development process. Implementation: When an organization designs code, they are essentially becoming a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider to their own organization. To do that, the IT operations team becomes the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) to the development teams. From there, the software is developed and deployed using an Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) process. A simplified view of an ALM process is as follows: Requirements Analysis Design and Development Implementation Testing Deployment to Production Maintenance In an on-premise environment, this often equates to the following process map: Requirements Business requirements formed by Business Analysts, Developers and Data Professionals. Analysis Feasibility studies, including physical plant, security, manpower and other resources. Request is placed on the work task list if approved. Design and Development Code written according to organization’s chosen methodology, either on-premise or to multiple development teams on and off premise. Implementation Code checked into main branch. Code forked as needed. Testing Code deployed to on-premise Testing servers. If no server capacity available, more resources procured through standard budgeting and ordering processes. Manual and automated functional, load, security, etc. performed. Deployment to Production Server team involved to select platform and environments with available capacity. If no server capacity available, standard budgeting and procurement process followed. If no server capacity available, systems built, configured and put under standard organizational IT control. Systems configured for proper operating systems, patches, security and virus scans. System maintenance, HA/DR, backups and recovery plans configured and put into place. Maintenance Code changes evaluated and altered according to need. In a distributed computing environment like Windows Azure, the process maps a bit differently: Requirements Business requirements formed by Business Analysts, Developers and Data Professionals. Analysis Feasibility studies, including budget, security, manpower and other resources. Request is placed on the work task list if approved. Design and Development Code written according to organization’s chosen methodology, either on-premise or to multiple development teams on and off premise. Implementation Code checked into main branch. Code forked as needed. Testing Code deployed to Azure. Manual and automated functional, load, security, etc. performed. Deployment to Production Code deployed to Azure. Point in time backup and recovery plans configured and put into place.(HA/DR and automated backups already present in Azure fabric) Maintenance Code changes evaluated and altered according to need. This means that several steps can be removed or expedited. It also means that the business function requesting the application can be held directly responsible for the funding of that request, speeding the process further since the IT budgeting process may not be involved in the Azure scenario. An additional benefit is the “Azure Marketplace”, In effect this becomes an app store for Enterprises to select pre-defined code and data applications to mesh or bolt-in to their current code, possibly saving development time. XML files are text-based documents, which makes them easy to read.  All of the data is literally spelled out in the document and relies on a just a few characters (<, >, =) to convey relationships and structure of the data.  XML files can be used by any commonly available text editor, like Notepad.   • How to convert from amateur web app developer to professional web apper?

    This is more of a practical question on web app development and deployment process. Here is some background information. I use PHP for server side scripting, javascript for client side. I use Netbeans and notepad++. I user Firefox and firebug for debugging and testing. The process I use is very amateurish, I code something in netbeans, something in notepad++ and since there is nothing to compile, I just refresh the firefox browser and test it. This is convenient and faster compared to the Java development enviornment where you would have to atleast compile and deploy the jar files before you could run them. I have been thinking of putting a formal process in my development and find it hard putting it together. There are so many things to do before you can deploy your final web app. I keep hearing jslint, compression, unit testing (selenium), Ant, YUI compressor etc but I am now looking for some steps that I can take to make me more organized. For e.g I use netbeans but don't use any projects within it. I directly update the files. I don't use any source control but use my Iomega backup that saves each save into a different version and at the end of the day I backup the dev directory to my Amazon s3 account. For me development environment is just a DEV directory, TEST is my intermediate stage and PROD is the final directory that gets pushed out to the server. But all these directories are in the same apache home. I have few php scripts that just copies the needed files into the production directory. Thats about it for my development approach. I know I am missing the following - Regression testing (manual or automated ??) - automated testing (selenium ??) - automated deployment (ANT ??) - source control (svn ??) - quality control (jslint ??) Can someone explain what are the missing steps and how to go about filling those steps in order to have more professional approach. I am looking for tools with example tutorials in streamlining the whole development to deployment stage. For me just getting a hang of database, server side and client side development all in synchronization was itself a huge accomplishment. And now I feel there is lot missing before you can produce quality web application. For e.g I see lot of mention about using automated testing but how to put in use with respect to javascript and php. How to use ANT for the deployment etc. Is this all too much for a single or two person development team? Is there a way to automate all the above so that I just keep coding in netbeans and then run a batch file that is configured once and run it everytime to produce the code in the production directory? Lot of these information is scattered on the web and here, if someone can guide I would be happy to consolidate here. Thank you for your patience :)

  • RequestFactoryEditorDriver getting edited data after flush

    Let me start with I have a solution, but I don't really think it is elegant. So, I am looking for a cleaner way to do this. I have an EntityProxy displayed in a view panel. The view panel is a RequestFactoryEditorDriver only using display mode. The user clicks on a data element and opens a popup editor to edit a data element of the EntityProxy with a few more bits of data than is displayed in the view panel. When the user saves the element I need the view panel to update the display. I ran into a problem because the RequestFactoryEditorDriver of the popup editor flow doesn't let you get to the edited data. The driver uses the passed in context and sends it to the server. The context returned out of flush only allows a Receiver even if you cast it to the type of context you stored in the editor driver in the edit() call. It doesn't appear to send and EntityProxyChanged event either, so I couldn't listen for that and update the display view. The solution I found was to change my domain object persist to return the newly saved entity. Then create the popup editor like this editor.getSaveButtonClickHandler().addClickHandler(createSaveHandler(driver, editor)); // initialize the Driver and edit the given text. driver.initialize(rf, editor); PlayerProfileCtx ctx = rf.playerProfile(); ctx.persist().using(playerProfile).with(driver.getPaths()) .to(new Receiver<PlayerProfileProxy>(){ @Override public void onSuccess(PlayerProfileProxy profile) { editor.hide(); playerProfile = profile; viewDriver.display(playerProfile); } }); driver.edit(playerProfile, ctx); editor.centerAndShow(); Then in the save handler I just fire the context I get from the flush. While this approach works, it doesn't seem right. It would seem I should subscribe to the entitychanged event in the display view and update the entity and the view from there. Also this approach saves the complete entity, not just the changed bits, which will increase bandwidth usage. What I would think should happen, is when you flush the entity it should 'optimistically' update the rf managed version of the entity and fire the entity proxy changed event. Only reverting the entity if something went wrong in the save. The actual save should only send the changed bits. In this way there isn't a need to refetch the whole entity and send that complete data over the wire twice. Is there a better solution?

    I have downloaded a Xen virtual machine image from the appscale project, and I am trying to start it up.   • SD Card reader not working on Sony Vaio

    This laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-Z31MN/B PCG-6z2m) has been installed with Windows 7 64 bit, all the drivers from Sony's VAIO site are installed, and everything in Device Manager both (a) has a driver and (b) shows as working, no exclamation marks or warnings. "Hide empty drives" in Folder options is disabled so the card reader appears, but will not read the card ("please insert a disk in drive O:"). Previously, when the laptop had Windows XP on it, it could read the same card. Also, Windows update suggested driver ("SD Card Reader") doesn't work, Ricoh own drivers install properly but do the same behaviour. Other 3rd party driver suggestions from forums (Acer and Texas-Instruments FlashMedia) do not seem to install properly. I would post the PCI id if I had it, but it was just showing up as rimsptsk\diskricohmemorystickstorage (while it had the Ricoh Driver installed). Edit: If there are any lower level diagnostic utlities which might shed more light on it I'd welcome hearing of them. Anything which might show get it to put troubleshooting logs in the event log or identify chipsets or whatever...   • Can't re-install OS on Asus Eee PC 1018P

    My friend has an Asus Eee PC 1018P. It has no CD/DVD drive (neither does he have a USB CD/DVD drive). The OS wasn't working fine, so we decided to restore the system using the provided OS backup from HD. But mid way through the installation it was interrupted and the computer was restarted (not a hardware or software issue – we did it). Now we cannot run the backup and we also tried to install Windows 7 through USB, but as soon as we start to install the OS, it says that some device driver is missing. It turns out that the OS needs a USB device driver to continue. It has USB 3.0 – maybe that's why the OS needs the driver. I tried disabling 3.0 and enabling 2.0 but then it does not boot from USB drive for some reason. We are stuck with this. The backup doesn't run and when booting from USB, it says that it needs a device driver. Anyone has any idea what we could do?

This was done a while ago, and at that time I successfully installed a data source (let's call it foo). Now I am trying to add another data source (DSN). I've done this through both ODBC Manager and the command-line tool myodbc-installer given with the tar bundle of the mysql-odbc connector from the mysql website.   • Disk is spinning down each minute, unable to disable it

    I played with spindown and APM settings of my Samsung discs and now they spin down every minute. I want to disable it, but it seems it does not accept any of the spindown time or APM values. Nothing works, it's all the same. Please help what values should be proper for it. It was too aggressive, I turned off disc tuning and it seems they are no longer spinning down.

  • Ubuntu/Nvidia lists DVI dual cable as single

    I have an NVidia Quadro FX 880M graphics card, from which I am trying to drive 2 monitors: my internal laptop montior (15.6", 1920x1080, Nvidia driver says it's running via DisplayPort) and an external 27" monitor (Dell U2711, 2560x1440 native resolution, via DVI). I've hooked the dual DVI cable to the dual DVI port on my dock (Dell PR03X) and installed the proprietary NVidia driver, but I cannot seem to get the full 2560x1440 out of the larger 27" external monitor. Looking at the NVidia driver settings, the monitor's connection is reported as a single DVI cable, rather than a dual one, which would explain the reduced resolution. Does anyone have any experience with an issue like this? What can I do to make full use of my new monitor? (Possibly) Relevant Information: There is no DVI port on the laptop itself, but one is provided via the dock. The laptop and dock both provide a DisplayPort jack, but I have been unable to get this working on either w/ the monitor. I did have the nouveau driver installed when I installed the nvidia proprietary driver, but have since removed it (no change in the monitor situation when I removed it). The 27" reports a max resolution of 1680x1050. Thanks, Joe

I've called the telecom, but they just offered to sell me a new stick :-( Is there really no Win7 driver available for the E170 stick? Or can I trick it into installing anyway?

    Hi all, I have an HP 2600n installed on a SBS2003 server. This printer works fine when I print from the server itself and also from my Windows 7 computer #1. From my Windows 7 #2, it doesn't work. I get the error message that I need to install the driver. The error message is in french but here it the translation. No drivers has been found Windows is unable to find a driver for HP Color Laserjet 2600n on the network. To find a driver manually, click ok. If not, click on cancel and contact your sys adm. I reinstalled from scratch the printer, deleted the driver... Still no luck Any takers?
