  Hi, everyone I have a huge pcap file (generated by tcpdump). When I try to open it in wireshark, the program just gets unresponsive. Is there a way to split a file in set of smaller ones to open them one by one? The traffic captured in a file is generated by two programs on two servers, so I can't split the file using tcpdump 'host' or 'port' filters. I've also tried linux 'split' command :-) but with no luck. Wireshark wouldn't recognize the format.

• bash : "set -e" and check if a user exists make script exit

  i am writing a script to install a program with bash, i want to exit on error so i added "set -e" in the beginning of my script. the problem is that i have to check if a user exists inside of my script, to do this i am using "grep "^${USER}:" /etc/passwd", if the user exists, the script runs normally, but if the user doesn't exist, this command exists, and i don't want to exit on this case (i have to create the user and continue my installation). so what's the solution to make my script continue running ?? i tried to redirect the output of "grep" to a variable, but i still have the same problem :( thanks.

• Loss of feature set with VMware EVC

  If I have two machines both 3rd Generation AMD Opteron, one Shanghai & one Istanbul and I can vMotion between them. Does it buy me anything to enable EVC at the 3rd Generation AMD level? Will I lose any CPU features? My thoughts are, I can enable EVC 3rd Generation with running VMs and I can't enable 2nd Generation EVC with running VMs. I figure there won't be a lose in any features because if there was a reduction in feature set then I couldn't enable EVC with running VMs.

  I use the open source application Ulipad http://code.google.com/p/ulipad/ do edit restructured text files (rst). It is a python application that I launch via terminal like so python32 UliPad.py I have python32 as an alias to the 32bit install of python on my machine. I have several versions installed. First I would like a way to launch ulipad like other osx apps. Not really sure how to do this. I would like to set all .rst files to be opened with UliPad.py. Is there a way to do this? I know how to choose the default app in finder but not sure how to choose ulipad as that app.

• Can't set acl for afs even though i'm in the right group

  I've got a dir that i've lost controll over in an afs system. According to the system adminstrators my adminin subgroup (dsekt:admin) got rlidwka on the dir. I'm a member of this group (and i can list the members of the group and see my nick there) though I can't set the acl's for the dir.   I am trying to set robots.txt for all virtual hosts under nginx http server. I was able to do it in Apache by putting the following in main httpd.conf: <Location "/robots.txt"> SetHandler None </Location> Alias /robots.txt /var/www/html/robots.txt I tried doing something similar with nginx by adding the lines given below (a) within nginx.conf and (b) as include conf.d/robots.conf location ^~ /robots.txt { alias /var/www/html/robots.txt; } I have tried with '=' and even put it in one of the virtual host to test it. Nothing seemed to work. What am I missing here? Is there another way to achieve this?

• Excel 2007: Using a time to set XY chart axis scaling like in 2003

  In Excel 2003, when you created a XY chart using time as an axis, you could set the scaling of these axes by typing in the date. In Excel 2007, you have to use the decimal version of the time (eg. How many days since some arbitrary earlier date). I was wondering if there was a way to avoid having to make such a calculation? A developer posted on a blog that this issue would be fixed in a future release, but all versions of Excel 2007 I have tried have not resolved this issue. The relevant quote: Those of you familiar with this technique of converting time to a decimal may recall that Excel 2003 allowed you to enter a date and time like “1/1/07 11:00 AM” directly in the axis option min/max fields and Excel would calculate the appropriate decimal representation. This currently does not work in Excel 2007 but will be fixed in a subsequent release.

  I have an iMac and an LG Flatron connected as a secondary monitor. The recommended resolution for the flatron is 1680x1050 @ 65.290 Hz (horiz), 59.954 Hz (vert). For some reason, OSX is choosing a slightly different set of scan rates and this is currently my best guess of why the monitor goes into power saving mode when connected to the iMac (but works fine on a PC). Now, I resolved this by installing switchResX and fudging the scan rates according to the specs in the manual. But how does one change these rates w/o 3rd party tools? Which config files need editing? Thanks

  I have the following problem - Windows Vista does not connect to adhoc wireless network created on my Macbook. I have tried to create secured (with 40 bit key) and unsecured network but Windows Vista still has problems to connect. Windows VISTA informs me -- after 5 minutes of attempts - that setting up the connection -- with my adhoc network -- took too much time. My question: do I need to configure some settings on Vista to connect it to my Macbook? Maybe it is a problem with DHCP? • Redhat doesn't set my desired hostname on reboot

  I have a redhat (EL5) server that I need to change the hostname on. I'm trying to put it back into a known state to help with server provisioning activities. As part of changing the hostname, I'm updating /etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/hosts. I also have an explicit call to hostname. My desired state is that the server thinks its hostname is "localhost". And a call to "hostname" returns "localhost". The problem I'm having is that when I reboot, the hostname is reverted to "localhost.companyname.com" which is not what I want. How do I ensure that the hostname is set up as just "localhost" when I reboot? My /etc/sysconfig/network file contains: NETWORKING=yes HOSTNAME=localhost GATEWAY=123.123.123.123 #I do have a proper IP address here My /etc/hosts file contains: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 172.21.1.1 localhost.companyname.com localhost

  To test a specific embedded client, I need to set up a web server serving a couple of SSL (HTTPS) sites, say "main.mysite.com" and "alternate.mysite.com". These should be handled by the same certificate, with a Subject Name of "main.mysite.com" and a Subject Alternative Name of "alternate.mysite.com". This certificate needs to be in an authority chain back to a 'proper' CA (such as GoDaddy, to keep the cost down). My question is, are there any good tutorials on how to do this, or can someone explain the process? What sort of parent certificate do I need to purchase from the CA provider? My understanding of SSL certificates is limited, but as Manuel said in Fawlty Towers, "I learn...". I'm happy to work in Windows (IIS) or Linux (Apache) (or even OSX, for that matter). • Cannot set "Language for Non-Unicode Programs" in Regional and Language Settings

  I'm trying to set the Language for Non-Unicode Programs from English to Japanese (I'm using Windows XP SP 3), but it won't let me. It looks like I've got the East Asian Language packs installed, but when I select "Japanese" from the drop-down box and hit "Apply" I get an error that says "Setup was unable to install the chosen locale. Please contact your system administrator". I'm already logged in as the administrator, and I've restarted several times but it still won't let me. Can anyone give me an idea as to how to solve this problem? Reinstalling Windows is absolutely out of the question.

  Hi, I have a Brocade SAN Fabric Switch, a 200E. When using the web based management interface "SwitchExplorer" I can click the port, and I see "Port Administration Services". In the first screen of data that appreas, there's a row called "Health" which has value "Unmonitored". Do you know how to set this port to be Monitored? And if also - what "Health" monitoring does? • Why can't I create an Alias Resource Record Set for an EC2 instance

  I have been working with AWS for over a year, setting up EC2 instances, domains, ELBs, etc. When I want to assign a subdomain to an EC2 instance, I have to create an elastic IP (that I pay for), then assign a CNAME record to that elastic IP. When I want to assign a subdomain to an ELB (load balancer) instance, I just create an alias resource record set to the ELB. I've read over the docs and don't understand why AWS doesn't support aliasing to instances. Am I missing a key concept here? Wouldn't it be simpler to just alias EC2 instances and skip the whole elastic IP bit?

• How to set up wireless access on a Cisco router

  Hi, I've set up my 877W according to the configuration listed in this forum post: IPTV over Cisco 877 (It's the working configuration at the bottom of the post) Note that I have an 877W, so it also has a wireless radio. Now, I've gotten the whole setup to work, so IPTV is working, and I can access the internet via the ethernet ports. Now I'm trying to figure out how to allow access via the dot11radio interface. I've gathered that I basically need to create a bridge group, and bridge the radio to the internet VLAN. However, when I add a bridge-group 2 command to VLAN1, it seems to take down the whole internet VLAN. (The IPTV continues to work.) This makes the router itself inaccessible (I've got a laptop, so no serial) and I end up having to reboot the router. Can anyone tell me how to a) Allow wireless access to the internet (preferably with WEP, to match my old router) b) Determine what makes the router inaccessible when I add the new bridge group c) Forward the IPTV traffic onto a machine on my internet VLAN

• How to set path of Virtual PC hard disk differencing parent

  I have an old Windows XP Mode vhd backed up from my previous system, but I'm having difficulty getting it running on the new system. The vhd is a differencing disk, and its parent is the standard Windows XP Mode base; I still have the old parent, and have verified it is binary identical to the XP Mode base in my new installation of XP Mode. But in the new system, the path to the differencing disk parent is different than the old. When I open up the settings for the .vmcx for my old XP mode, and select "Hard Disk 1", the "Virtual hard disk file" is set correctly, but the "Parent Disk:" field is pointing at the wrong path, and I can't see any way to edit it. Does anyone know how?

  I'm trying to set up custom error pages in tomcat 6, because I don't want the default ones to show up. My error pages are static html, no jsp or anything dynamic. I know how to do this through the web.xml in each application but I'd prefere to setup the error pages only once for the entire server. I tried to add the following fragment to the global web.xml (in conf), but no matter what I add under location, it does not show. <error-page> <error-code>404</error-code> <location>/404.html</location> </error-page> What do I need to do to gobally define custom error pages?   Situation: We have a laptop here that's completely fubar. I.e: The hard drive is filled to the brim with bad sectors. Luckily, backups have been made using the built-in Windows 7 backup feature. This produces folders named Backup Set 2012-11-09 003009, containing folders like Backup Files 2012-11-09 003009, containing zip-files like Backup files 1, 2, 3,... Our brand new laptop comes with Windows 8. Now: Can we, using the standard back-up and restore feature in Windows 8, restore all the documents, music, etc. using the Windows 7 backup files? Thanks. (FYI: We also took a normal backup of all the documents just to be sure of course. I'm just curious what would happen. I would test it out, but the new laptop hasn't arrived yet and I wanted to make sure my efforts would not be in vain.)

  Hi, I'm trying to set up something on my network so that when users connect and try and use the internet they are re-directed to a locally-hosted terms and conditions and policy page. Once they click "accept" then they will be passed through to their homepage, otherwise if they decline then the window will close or show them an error message. I've spent a while looking into this and am wondering if it's possible to do witout having to setup/add to a firewall. Otheriwse let me know what my options are and I can pass it on. Many Thanks Tom
