• Splitting Servers into Two Groups

  At our organization, we're looking at implementing some sort of informal internal policy for server maintenance. What we're looking at doing is completing maintenance on our entire server pool every two months; each month we'll do half of the servers. What I'm trying to figure out is some way to split the servers into the two groups. Our naming convention isn't much to be desired (but getting better) so by name or number doesn't really work. I can easily take a list of all the servers and split them in two, but with new servers are being added constantly, and old ones retired, that list would be a headache to maintain. I'd like to look at any given server and know if it should have its maintenance done this month or next. For example, it would be nice to look at the serial number. If it started with an even number, then it gets maintenance done on even months and vice-versa. This example won't work though as a little over half of the servers are virtual. Any ideas?

• Why is my Compaq NC8430 laptop so darned HOT ?

  For a long time I've had a Compaq nc8430 laptop. It's nearly 3 years old now. Originally shipped with WinXP, but I installed Vista on it. From the very start it was not a good experience. This thing has one of those "stickpoint" mice, which I like. After a while, I noticed that the computer was generating lots and lots of heat. So much heat, that the stickpoint bumper would melt and disintegrate. Normally I would expect heat if the CPU was working hard, but even when the CPU was idle, the computer was hot. Much too hot to keep on my lap. Turns out this is not an uncommon problem. I installed the HWmonitor tool, and found that the CPU temp was 82C when it was plugged in - pretty darn hot. And because the temp was so high, the fan never turned off, so the laptop was as loud as a jet engine, always. If I unplugged it from A/C power, the screen would dim and the temperature would decrease, and the fan noise would lessen, but still, it was too loud. It's totally unusable. What is the problem?

• wrt54gl reboots; troubleshooting steps?

  I am using about 10 wrt54gl's in a small school. I am using a combination of stock firmware and Tomato 1.25, slowly moving towards all Tomato. We have had these devices installed for several years without problems. Recently, more and more of the units have started to spontaneously reboot, usually during high-traffic times (but not always). For the most part, the rebooting is not critical for us, but the wrt54gl's temporarily revert to 192.168.1.1 on the LAN ethernet ports and conflict with a critical server that's already installed with that IP. (Yes -- we plan to move the server off that address, but it is an involved process.) Both Tomato and the stock firmware (several versions from recent to several years old) exhibit the same problem: random reboots and reverting to 192.168.1.1 and conflicting temporarily with our server until the firmware boot process finishes. Here are my questions: Any way to prevent the wrt54gl's from reverting to 192.168.1.1 during the boot process? I was thinking of doing a custom firmware mod, although I hate to go that direction. Any steps to take in troubleshooting the reboots? Only some of the wrt54gl's reboot, which is odd. Others stay online for weeks and months without issues. Thanks.

• Can't access server on LAN new Router

  Earlier this week my roommates decided to change the router we are using for our home network. On the old router I had no problems accessing a laptop running Mint Linux over the network(SSH, FTP, and Shared Folders). However I am now not able to connect. I have verified the IP address of my Linux machine has not changed and I have no problems connecting to our NAS(WDMYCLOUD). The new router is a D-Link DIR-868L. PuTTY is giving me a Timed Out error(was giving me a EHOSTUNREACH before). Running Windows 8.1 the connecting laptop, but tried connecting using my phone via SSH did not work either. More information: Can ping the Linux machine from the router but not my computer. Pinging 192.168.0.111 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.0.102: Destination host unreachable. • SQL Server 2005 - Linked Visual Foxpro Authorization

  Here's the Scenario: We have an existing SQL 2000 Server that has a linked server to a share directory (on another server) containing Visual FoxPro tables; all connections work correctly. Porting the SQL 2000 server to a new SQL 2005 server results in questionable behavior: If you connect to the server, remotely, using Windows Authentication, you receive this error when running a query against the linked server: OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "[linked server name]" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Visual FoxPro Driver]File 'MyTable.dbf' does not exist.". Msg 7350, Level 16, State 2, Line 2 Cannot get the column information from OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "[linked server name]". However, logged in locally, the query works fine. The query also works correctly when logged in remotely, but using a SQL login. The only scenario I receive the error is when connected remotely, using windows authentication. As I mentioned before, this works on the SQL 2000 server, and both the old and new servers are running under the same network account (which has access to the folder the FoxPro files are in). Doing a little searching on the internet it looks like others have run into this situation, but I haven't found a resolution. Has anyone run into this before?

• Workstations cannot see new MS Server 2008 domain, but can access DHCP.

  The XP Pro workstations do not see the new replacement domain upon boot; they only see their cached entry for the old (server 2003) domain controller. The old_server is not connected to the network. I have DHCP working with the same scope as the old_server. I did as they instructed by opening Local Area Connection Properties, then selecting TCP/IPv4 and setting the sole preferred DNS server to the local hosts static IP (10.10.1.1). I am hoping to reach the point where I can define users and user groups. Also, does TechNet have a single theoretical overview document I could read. I really don't like treating comps as magic. • Ubuntu 10.04 Server on Hyper-V Server R2 has sluggish install and command line

  I've installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 (64 bit) on a Hyper-V Server R2. I've encountered two issues that I think are related: Very slow install Very slow command prompt The text-mode installer goes through a series of text-based prompt windows. It takes 7-10 seconds for each of these windows to draw on the screen. The end result is that every time I answer a prompt and hit enter I wait for 15 seconds while the screen redraws line by line. I can literally see each line of text being drawn (like the old 300 baud modems days). Once done installing, scrolling on the command line is super slow. For instance, if a simple command, like "ls", causes the screen to scroll, it will scroll very slowly. This happens on a fresh install. The server functions as a LAMP server and an OpenSSH server, but that's it (I don't even have any Virtual Hosts set up yet). AND this only happens on the Virtual Machine console. I access the console through Hyper-V Manager and don't have this problem on any of my other Virtual Machines. Also, this problem does NOT happen when accessing a shell through OpenSSH. How can I improve this performance issue?

• Windows 7 - system error 5 problem

  My wife has just had a new computer for Christmas (with an upgrade from VISTA to Windows 7), and has joined the home network. We are using a mix of WindowsXP and Ubuntu boxes linked via a switch. We are all in the same workgroup. (No domain). Internet access, DHCP, and DNS server is an SME server that thinks it is domain controller (although we are not using a domain). I need to run a script to back up my wife's machine (venus). In the past the script creates a share on a machine with lots of space (leda), and then executes the line. PSEXEC \\venus -u admin -p adminpassword -c -f d:\Progs\snapshot.exe C: \\leda\Venus\C-drive.SNA With the wife's old XP machine, this would run the sysinternals utility, copy shapshot,exe to her machine and run it, which would then back up her C: drive to the share on leda. I cannot get this to work with Windows 7, nor can I link through to the C$ share on her machine. This gives me a permissions error (system error 5). The admin account is a full admin account. And yes - I do know the password. The ordinary shares on her machine work fine! I guess I'm missing something that Microsoft have built into Windows 7 - but what? The machine is running Windows 7 business, with windows firewall, AVG anti virus, and all the crap-ware you get with a new PC removed. Thanks

  Hi all, When a particular user is having a lot of problems with Windows XP e.g. applications crashing, unresponsive applications (which used to work), and as a general troubleshooting practice for a domain user, I normally rename that user's old profile and get him/her to logon to create a "fresh" profile (on the same PC). More often than not, this will solve the problem albeit some reconfiguration i.e. Outlook, Excel add-ins etc. As I took over the systems admin role from another administrator, I would like to know what is the easiest way to find out (either through a third party or some Windows administrative tool) what settings are carried over if the profile is a Roaming Profile. I tested creating a new user profile for one of my users and it seems basic Outlook settings such as the user's mailbox and PSTs are carried over automatically when I create a new user profile. I suspect this is done through a batch file loaded as part of the login script. However, my knowledge of scripting is limited and I don't want any corruptions to be carried over to the new profile. Can someone share their experiences on this? Thanks in advance.

• glib2 64-bit compile fails on Solaris 10

  I'm encountering a problem building glib-2.26.1 on a Solaris 10 box - 64-bit. Goo diligence doesn't turn anything up, but no matter what I do the build fails in the same way. • Convert a Linksys WAG54GP2 ADSL router into Access point only to extend my Wifi range

  I have a wireless lan running on my ASDL2 connection. The router (Seimens Gigaset sx763) is provided by the ISP and is generally good. However I have couple of dead spots at the far end of the house and since I have my old router sitting in the drawer I thought that I'd try to convert it into simple WAP. However downloading the manual from linksys it seems to be that the manual is from an earlier firmware, but the very first option on the very first page seems promising: Wan Mode: Router or ADSL However after this I'm a bit lost. I know that the wireless card on this box will need a mac address and it must get its address from the master router (I thought static might be best). However the again the manual is out of date I have the option of DHCP: ON or OFF or RELAY I've not even got to the more complex options yet. Question is can this device even work this way (seems like it but I cannot find any docs on it), and if so how? Edit: Having now fiddled around I'm of the opinion that this cannot be done.

• Windows xp mapped drives disconnect from Windows 7 on Peer to Peer network

  I have a 5 user peer to peer network. 2-XP machines, 3- Windows 7 machines and a Windows 7 machine acting as the file server. I have NO issues with the Windows 7 machines staying connected via the mapped drives to the "server". However, once a day the 2 XP machines will not connect to the Windows 7 machine "server" via the mapped drives. I must restart the "server" in order to see the server and access the files via the mapped drives or Explorer. I have tried the persistent : yes command in NET USE, on the XP machines and also setting a static IP address on the "server". I've turned the firewall off on the "server:, no difference so I turned the firewall back on. No interruption occurs with the internet when this happens, just can't see the server. Again, the Windows 7 users are unaffected. I have gone into the advanced network settings on the "server" and added read/write permissions for Everyone as well as the users of the XP machines. I have double checked that we are all on the same WORKGROUP. I'm at a loss. It seems to happen around mid-day and I've not been able to find any activity that is happening at this time (Like someone plugging in a thumbdrive). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as my client is running old XP software he no longer has the disks for and needs for his engineering firm.

• time sync with ntpd

  I run Debian on several systems, and their times do not seem to stay in sync. I can run ntpdate manually, but I thought that I should have an ntpd running that would automate that. I did check with apt and apt-cache but don't find any ntpd (or associated ntpq), not any such names in my system (locate...), but ntp-doc does still describe them. Looking around I see that there is an ntpdate-debian command, and it uses /etc/default/ntpdate for servers (instead of the standard /etc/ntp.conf), but even thought that file is there and has "yes" indicated to use ntp.conf, it fails with "no servers can be used", although ntpdate works fine. Is this just a layer over ntpdate, any reason to use it instead? So, why are they missing, do I need them, how do I automate time updates? Associated, two of my machines are virtualized on a MSoft VM, how is it that their clocks drift, and both to different values? (The underlying Windows machine clock seems stable). I see a few old notes about time & ntp problems on VMware, didn't find anything either current or relating to MSoft VMs. Anything I did see says just to use ntpd, but as above, ...?!

• How do i tell if my drivers are up to date on Acer?

  Hoping some kind souls can help me out ? I got a blue screen the other day after trying to load sandboxie. So its obviously conflicting with something. I checked if my drivers were up to date on my acer aspire one AOD270 on this intel based site; http://www.drivermanager.com/en/down...tel&Logo=intel Its showing i have 2 drivers that need updating ; Intel NM10 Express chipset and the Realtek PCIE Cardreader. I have no idea whether to do the update via the Intel Driver update site or the Acer drivers download page? I then ran Bluescreenview and on the dump file its showing ; ''caused by driver'' igdkmd32.sys ''file description'' Intel (R) WDDM Kernel mode driver ''product name''Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows 7(R) I bought the laptop here in SE Asia about a year ago. The ''HOT!! NEW download tool'' on the acer drivers site (below) doesnt seem to work and the info about removing and installing drivers is limited. Not sure what to trust on non acer/manufacturer sites. http://support.acer.com/us/en/produc...1&modelId=4040 I've located the igdkmd32.sys file inside the INTEL GRAPHICS MEDIA ACCELERATOR 3600 SERIES 8.14.8.1064. When i click on ''update driver'' in control panel it searches and says its up to date. In windows maintenance it says this intel had a problem, but no solution. For all i know my drivers could be up to date and its something else. Can anybody advise a dummy step by step the process i should follow ? I've never done this before. eg do i delete the old driver first and then download the new one.how much of a problem i could cause by downloading this type of thing wrongly? As yet i havent downloaded any drivers. I've asked on other forums but no luck as yet. Thanks for any help!

• Variable directory names over SCP

  We have a backup routine that previously ran from one disk to another on the same server, but have recently moved the source data to a remote server and are trying to replicate the job via scp. We need to run the script on the target server, and we've set up key-based scp (no username/password required) between the two servers. Using scp to copy specific files and directories works perfectly: scp -r -p -B [email protected]:/mnt/disk1/bsource/filename.txt /mnt/disk2/btarget/ However, our previous routine iterates through directories on the source disk to determine which files to copy, then runs them individually through gpg encryption. Is there any way to do this only by using scp? Again, this script needs to run from the target server, and the user the job runs under only has scp (no ssh) access to the target system. • Multiple cable adapter setup not working - VGA to smartphone. All cables tested and work

  Issue Pictured overhead projector setup does not work. #1 - #2 - #3 - Phone. All cables are tested and work! The issue is the HDMI connection between cable #2 and #3. With all other cables, the screen will automatically be displayed onto the projector screen. No extra work needed. With the pictured setup, the smartphone screen is not displayed onto the projector screen. What is the issue with the HDMI connection?? Background We recently had to do presentations at work (school), but the administration only provided VGA means of hooking up to it. Mostly likely reason probably dealt with cost. Anyways, there are several teachers that have brand new Samsung Series 9 ultrabooks (or similar). You know, the ones without VGA support. So I bought an adapter for those ultrabooks. Cable #5 in the picture below. However, both my coworker and I have been wanting to just display our phone screens on the projector. This I knew would require some extra work. • Windows CE restores default configuration after restart (Motorola MC3190)

  Good morning, everyone! I have a problem with Motorola MC3190 hand scanner running on Windows CE. I've got few of those to make a new program for some kind of warehouse. There is already installed program which have been used by the customers before, so I delete this one and instead I install my new software which I've just made. It is running very well, but when I take out the battery and leave the device for entire night without power supply, it restores the whole configuration, so the old program is back, the wireless configuration is back and... Yeah. The scanner is restored to the configuration which was running when I received it few weeks ago. What I want to do is to set the whole configuration of the scanner so after a long power-off my program and my configuration will be restored. I truly believe someone knows how to do it. The time is running out, and I believe that the customer will be kind of annoyed when he will change the battery and the program which he bought will be gone. ;-) Regards, Jarek

Someone delete my index.php files from all my domains and puts his own index.php files with the next message: Hacked by Z4i0n - Fatal Error - 2009 [Fatal Error Group Br] Site desfigurado por Z4i0n Somos: Elemento_pcx - s4r4d0 - Z4i0n - Belive Gr33tz: W4n73d - M4v3rick - Observing - MLK - l3nd4 - Soul_Fly 2009 My domain has many subdomains, but only the subdomains that can be accessed with an specific user were hacked, the rest weren't affected. I assumed that someone entered through SSH, because some of these subdomains are empty and Google doesn't know about them. But I checked the access log using the last command, but this didn't show any activity through SSH or FTP the day of the attack neither seven days before. Does anybody has an idea? I already changed my passwords. What do you recommend me to do? UPDATE My website is hosted at Dreamhost. I suppose they have the latest patches installed. But, while I was looking how they entered to my server, I found weird things. In one of my subdomains, there were many scripts for execute commands on the server, upload files, send mass emails and display compromising information. These files had been created since last December!! I have deleted those files and I'm looking for more malicious files. Maybe the security hold is an old and forgotten PHP application. This application has a file upload form protected by a password system based on sessions. One of the malicious scripts was in the uploads directory. This doesn't seem like an SQL Injection attack. • How to repair a damage transaction log file for Exchange 2003

  Hi! Yesterday we had a power failure and the UPS did not work (it has worked perfect before). Everything seem to be ok when I started all the servers again except of the mail, when I try to mount the store I get the following message: “The database files in this store are corrupted” Server: Exchange 2003 running on a Small Business Server Latest full backup: one week old Backup program: Backup Exec 9.0 This is what I have done: 1. Copy every file in the MDBDATA folder (edb, stm, log) 2. Run Eseutil /d for priv1.edb 3. Run Eseutil /p for priv1.edb (took seven hours) 4. Run Isintig –fix –test alltests, now it breaks down. Isintig fails with the following error: Isinteg cannot initiate verification process. Please review the log file for more information. The problem is that there is no log file created. 5. Giving up on this route I decide to do a restore from the backup, it fails with the following error: Unable to read the header of logfile E00.log. Error -501, and the error: Information Store (5976) Callback function call ErrESECBRestoreComplete ended with error 0xC80001F5 The log file is damaged. My conclusion is that E00.log is damage, so how can I repair it so that I can restore the database? Or should I give up and try some other route?

• New SSD freezing on older motherboard (intel G31)

  I have an ECS G31T-M motherboard running a Core2 Quad processor, 4gb RAM, Windows 7 32bit, Geforce 9600GT. Bought a Sandisk Extreme III 120GB (SDSSDX-120G-G25) and installed today. I'm outputting this from my 9600GT with included TV-out adapter to Component video (to my HDTV). This motherboard is SATA 2 and from what I can tell, SSDs run on the IDE controller and there is nothing fancy to set up advanced features of SSDs. I've noticed on other forums (but not verifying with ECS) this board does not support AHCI. I have two versions of Windows 7 installed on two drives, the SSD and an old 500G disc drive. When booted from my older 500G HDD, video plays fine on the HDTV. When booting the SSD windows 7 install, I am freezing constantly, as in, video plays OK for a minute, then picture freezes for 1-3 minutes (sometimes as audio continues playing) and returns for 20-30 seconds before doing the same thing again. Other tasks such as basic maneuvering through file folders seems to be no problem. Please help!! Do I need a new system for this thing to work, or could there be other fixes? I updated firmware to R201 to no avail. DJM

• Dual boot nt4 and windows 98

  I am trying to dual boot nt4 and windows 98 se (don't laugh - old computer). I have seen Microsoft's instructions for doing this, but it limits windows 98 to have a Fat16 partition (NT4's NTLDR doesn't understand FAT32) and therefore only 2GB of disk space. I really need it to have more than that. I started with Win 98 (on the 1st partition), repartitioned the disk, then added NT4 on the 2nd partition. NT4 took over the bootloader (as expected), so NT4 boots, but Win 98 doesn't. Right now I am working in VMWare so I can use nonpersistent hard drives (IDE like the real computer) to recover from errors easily. I've tried using XPs NTLDR using the instructions here: http://www.nu2.nu/fixnt4/ , but I got weird errors from NT4 and it never really worked. If XP's NTLDR would work, that should be able to boot both OSes. I've also tried using GRUB. In theory that should work. In fact when booting from super grub disk, it does. But as soon as I install grub to disk, Win 98 boots, but NT 4 blue screens at boot with a 0x0000007b inaccessible_boot_device error (that can be alot of things see MS kb 822051). The incantation I'm using for GRUB 1 is rootnoverify (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1 boot So, anybody have some suggestions?

• Read Only Domain Controllers and DNS zone updates

  I have a Windows 2003 domain and just added a new DC that runs 2008 R2. I updated the schema accordingly for both forest and domain levels. I also made sure to run /rodcprep at the time I did this. I have a branch office with a 2008 R2 file/print server that is a read-only domain controller (DC). The one problem I have been having is with AD-integrated DNS records updates. In the data center, we had to make an IP address change on a particular server. All our other sites' DCs (2003) updated the record fine. The 2008 R2 DC in the data center also updates its record fine. However, the RODC in the branch office does not. So if I nslookup the target server on a 2003 DC, the IP address is correct. Same with the 2008 R2 DC in the data center. But an nslookup on the branch office RODC still pulls in the old IP address. Moreover, any new records we've created (e.g., just added a new terminal server) do not get updated on the branch RODC either. Is there something simple I'm missing? How do I get the RODC to sync its AD-integrated DNS records with the rest of my world? Thank you in advance for your responses. Mike

• MacPorts pHash not showing up in Python

  I am having a problem where python does not show pHash installed even though I installed it using macports. I made sure I am using the MacPorts version of Python by doing: sudo port select --set python python27 I then installed pHash by doing: sudo port install pHash. It installed without any errors. When I call help('modules'), I do not see pHash listed among the installed packages. Any ideas on why python is not seeing the pHash install by MacPorts?
