• How to work with XAML editor in Visual Studio 2010?

  I've worked with Visual Studio 2008 and editing XAML was really painful because the designer reloaded very slowly. Now I have installed Visual Studio 2010 and it seems to me that the XAML editor + Designer haven't changed much. For example in order to force designer to change a color in my control I have to close the xaml file and open it again. Is it just my problem? I've tried this solution: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/859335/visual-studio-2008-xaml-editor-not-working-disappeared but it didn't help. Are there any better tools for Visual Studio to edit XAML? Thanks!

• A very basic auto-expanding list/array

  Hi, I have a method which returns an array of fixed type objects (let's say MyObject). The method creates a new empty Stack<MyObject>. Then, it does some work and pushes some number of MyObjects to the end of the Stack. Finally, it returns the Stack.ToArray(). It does not change already added items or their properties, nor remove them. The number of elements to add will cost performance. There is no need to sort/order the elements. Is Stack a best thing to use? Or must I switch to Collection or List to ensure better performance and/or lower memory cost?

  Hi guys, as the comments always have it, you can select to show the top 5 comments (which i know how) and if there is more than 5, you can click a link and it will show the following 5 comments. The problem is that i don't know how the code should be for it to show the next 5. Better idea of what i'm saying Let's say i have 10 comments, i use SELECT * FROM news ORDER BY ID DESC LIMIT 5 that will show the TOP 5 comments say, the comments with ID 10,9,8,7,6 but what if i want the comments with ID 5,4,3,2,1 ?

• How to pass data to another droid device when the other device isn't expecting it

  I am working on an application and one feature that would make it really useful is the ability to share some information, but the other device may not be expecting the data to be sent. For example, if I am reading a really good book, and I realize that a friend may like it, I could use an application to send the data to him, so he could order the book from Amazon. But, since he isn't expecting the data, I would hate for the application to be polling a server every so often, as that will be needlessly draining the battery. Ideally it would be great if there was a way to make a phone call to the target device, send a data packet and end the call. If it could be done and prevent the phone from ringing, then it would be very useful to me. I am curious if there is some way to send data between devices without polling.

  I'm creating a static library in C++. The static library itself links to nothing. To test the static library, I'm creating a test program in C++ (you know, with a main function). Now, I want that whenever I click Build in Xcode, it compiles the static library first, then compiles the test program and link that test program to the static library, like this: # The steps indicate the order Xcode should compile it # (Step 1) Static Library <----------. | (Step 2) Test Program -------> Standard Library Also, the test program should use the header files of the static library.   In my VB.net apps i make use of Linq2SQL and Reportviewer with RDLC reports. With Visual Studio 2010 they upgraded this reportviewer component so you can use the newer RDL specification from 2008. Now I've a problem to show related objects. For example assume you provide an order to the datasource of the report and then you can show something like Fields!Customer.Value.Name where Customer is a related entity. I also got the error in my immediate window: *Warning: The Value expression for the textrun ‘Name_1.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0]’ contains an error: The specified operation is not valid.   Hi, We have a system that makes a use of 3rd party COM DLL written in vba We have a centralised web application and 1-50 client machines that must reference that COM DLL in order to use our centralised web application. The COM DLL is going to be updated rapidly in the future, which means that it has to be re-installed on every machine manually. Is it possible to centralise this COM DLL somwhere on the network? Is there any other alternatives? Otherwise the maintenance overhead will be huge... Thank you

  hey guys couple of quick questions 1) In the local search results - we can get a lot of parameters like street title, address, city, state, lat, long , url etc - In order for me to uniquely identify this record - can I consider URL to be unique to this address or concatenation of latitude and longitude Ref: http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/documentation/reference.html#_class_GlocalResult 2) In terms of usage, depending upon what user enters, I'm displaying a list of local business for the user to choose. Now when a user selects a particular business address - is it legal for me to store that business address along with lat and longitude information in my database for future look ups. • Writing a search engine

  Hello all, The title might be a bit misleading, but I couldn't figure out a better title. I'm writing a simple search engine which will search on several sites for the specific domain. To be concrete: I'm writing a search engine for hardstyle livesets/aftermovies/tracks. To do I will search on the sites who provide livesets, tracks, and such. The problem here is speed, I need to pass the search query to 5-7 sites, get the results and then use my own algorithm to display the results in a sorted order. I could just "multithread" it, but it's easier said then done so I have a few questions. What would be the best solution to this problem? Should I just multithread/process this application, so I'm going to get a bit of speed-up? Are there any other solutions or I am doing something really wrong? Thanks, William van Doorn

We work for a University and specialize in CRUD web apps for internal customers who are always changing requirements along the way. So, my question is...How do we best implement Scrum techniques? Supplemental concerns: Is it recommended to quit Waterfall "cold turkey" in order to facilitate the transition or do you feel a progressive approach is more effective? • How to deal with presence or not of xml namespaces using xslt.

  I have some XML/TEI documents, and i'm writing an XSLT 2.0 to extract their content. Almost all TEI documents has no namespace, but one has the default namespace (xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"). So all documents has the same aspect, with unqulified tags like <TEI> or <teiHeader>, but if I try to extract the content, all works with "non-namespaced-documents", but nothing (of course) is extracted from the namespaced-document. So i used the attribute xpath-default-namespace="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" and now (of course) the only document working is the namespaced one. I can't edit documents at all, so what I'm asking is if there's a way to change dynamically the xpath-default-namespace in order to make work xpaths like //teiHeader both with namespaced and non-namespaced documents

• Optimizing ROW_NUMBER() in SQL Server

  We have a number of machines which record data into a database at sporadic intervals. For each record, I'd like to obtain the time period between this recording and the previous recording. I can do this using ROW_NUMBER as follows: WITH TempTable AS ( SELECT *, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY Machine_ID ORDER BY Date_Time) AS Ordering FROM dbo.DataTable ) SELECT [Current].*, Previous.Date_Time AS PreviousDateTime FROM TempTable AS [Current] INNER JOIN TempTable AS Previous ON [Current].Machine_ID = Previous.Machine_ID AND Previous.Ordering = [Current].Ordering + 1 The problem is, it goes really slow (several minutes on a table with about 10k entries) - I tried creating separate indicies on Machine_ID and Date_Time, and a single joined-index, but nothing helps. Is there anyway to rewrite this query to go faster?

  In my early .Net programming days, I used string.Format() only for complex string concatenations, for example to compile strings as Problem with customer order 234 of date 2/2/2002 and payment id 55543. But now I use string.Format for almost every string concatenation I have to do, also simple ones such as prefixing a string with something. Console.WriteLine(string.Format("\t\t{0}", myString)); Is there any possible overhead on this? Maybe I should use the regular + operator to do these simple operations? What's your opinion on this?

  I have a script myscript.inc.php which handles all urls that look like /script-blah I accomplish this by using following .htaccess RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^script-(.*)$ myscript.inc.php?s=$1 [QSA,L] However users could also access it this way by typing /myscript.inc.php?s=blah I would like to prevent that. I tried <Files ~ "\.inc\.php$"> Order deny,allow Deny from all </Files> and RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} \.inc\.php RewriteRule .* - [F,L,NS] They both prevent users from viewing /myscript.inc.php?s=blah but they also cause /script-blah to return 403... Is there a way to do this correctly?

  Hi, I'm trying to sort out a result set that gives the 5 closest users sorted by upcoming birthday. This works perfectly until leap years comes into play. For example: May 15th - 96 days left May 15th - 97 days left The top result is a birth at 1987 and the lower is from 1988. u_birth is stored as yyyy-mm-dd. Is there a simple way to sort this problem without having to rewrite the entire query? • How can web form content be preserved for the back button

  When a web form is submitted and takes the user to another page, it is quite often the case that the user will click the Back button in order to submit the form again (the form is an advanced search in my case.) How can I reliably preserve the form options selected by the user when they click Back (so they don't have to start from scratch with filling the form in again if they are only changing one of many form elements?) Do I have to go down the route of storing the form options in session data (cookies or server-side) or is there a way to get the browser to handle this for me? (Environment is PHP/JavaScript - and the site must work on IE6+ and Firefox2+)

• AVAudioPlayer currentTime problem

  Hi, I'm trying to use the audioplayer with a slider in order to seek into a track (nothing complicated). But I have a weird behavior... for some value of currentTime (between 0 and trackDuration), the player stop playing the track, and goes into "audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying:successfully:" with successfully to NO. And it did not go into "audioPlayerDecodeErrorDidOccur:error:" It's like it can't read the time i'm giving to it. For exemple the duration of the track is: 295.784424 seconds i set the currentTime to 55.0s (ie: 54.963878 or 54.963900 or 54.987755, etc... when printed as %f). The "crashes" always happen when the currentTime is 54.987755... and I really don't understand why... So if you have any idea... ^^

• Why is memory management so visible in Java VM?

  I'm playing around with writing some simple Spring-based web apps and deploying them to Tomcat. Almost immediately, I run into the need to customize the Tomcat's JVM settings with -XX:MaxPermSize (and -Xmx and -Xms); without this, the server easily runs out of PermGen space. Why is this such an issue for Java VMs compared to other garbage collected languages? Comparing counts of "tune X memory usage" for X in Java, Ruby, Perl and Python, shows that Java has easily an order of magnitude more hits in Google than the other languages combined. I'd also be interested in references to technical papers/blog-posts/etc explaining design choices behind JVM GC implementations, across different JVMs or compared to other interpreted language VMs (e.g. comparing Sun or IBM JVM to Parrot). Are there technical reasons why JVM users still have to deal with non-auto-tuning heap/permgen sizes?

• Python UTF-16 encoding hex representation

  I have a string in Python 2.7.2 say u"\u0638". When I write it to file: f = open("J:\\111.txt", "w+") f.write(u"\u0638".encode('utf-16')) f.close() In hex it looks like: FF FE 38 06 When i print such a string to stdout i will see: '\xff\xfe8\x06'. The querstion: Where is \x38 in the string output to stdout? In other words why the string output to stdout is not '\xff\xfe\x38\x06'? If I write the string to file twice: f = open("J:\\111.txt", "w+") f.write(u"\u0638".encode('utf-16')) f.write(u"\u0638".encode('utf-16')) f.close() The hex representation in file contains byte order mark (BOM) \xff\xfe twice: FF FE 38 06 FF FE 38 06 I wonder what is the techique to avoid writting BOM in UTF-16 encoded strings?
