• How to restrict text search to a certain subset of the database ?

  I have a large central database of around 1 million heavy records. In my app, for every user I would have a subset of rows from central table, which would be very small (probably 100 records each).When a particular user has logged in , I would want to search on this data set only. Example: Say I have a central database of all cars in the world. I have a user profile for General Motors(GM) , Ferrari etc. When GM is logged in I just want to search(a full text search and not fire a sql query) for those cars which are manufactured by GM. Also GM may launch/withdraw a model in which case central db would be updated & so would be rowset associated with GM. In case of acquisitions, db of certain profiles may change without launch/removal of new car. So central db wont change then , but rowsets may. Whats the best way to implement such a design ? These smaller row sets would need to be dynamic depending on user activities. We are on Rails 2.3.5 and use thinking_sphinx as the connector and Sphinx/MySQL for search and relational associations.

• asp.net mvc: What is the correct way to return html from controller to refresh select list?

  Hi, I am new to ASP.NET MVC, particularly ajax operations. I have a form with a jquery dialog for adding items to a drop-down list. This posts to the controller action. If nothing (ie void method) is returned from the Controller Action the page returns having updated the database, but obviously there no chnage to the form. What would be the best practice in updating the drop down list with the added id/value and selecting the item. I think my options are: 1) Construct and return the html manually that makes up the new <select> tag [this would be easy enough and work, but seems like I am missing something] 2) Use some kind of "helper" to construct the new html [This seems to make sense] 3) Only return the id/value and add this to the list and select the item [This seems like an overkill considering the item needs to be placed in the correct order etc] 4) Use some kind of Partial View [Does this mean creating additional forms within ascx controls? not sure how this would effect submitting the main form its on? Also unless this is reusable by passing in parameters(not sure how thats done) maybe 2 is the option?] UPDATE: Having looked around a bit, it seems that generating html withing the controller is not a good idea. I have seen other posts that render partialviews to strings which I guess is what I need and separates concerns (since the html bits are in the ascx). Any comments on whether that is good practice.

• RichEdit VCL and URLs. Workarounds for OnPaint Issues.

  So, issue is with the thing Delphi progies scare to death - Rich Edit in Windows ( XP and pre-XP versions ). Situation: I have added EM_AUTOURLDETECTION in OnCreate of form. Target - RichEdit1. Then, I have form, that is "collapsed" after showing form. RichEdit Control is sattic, visible and enabled, but it is "hidden" because form window is collapsed. I can expand and collapse form, using Button1 and changing forms Constraints and Size properties. After first time I expand form, the URL inside RichEdit1 control is highlighted. BUT - After second, third, fourth, etc... time I Collapse and Expand form, the RichEdit1 Control does not highlight URL anymore. I have tried EM_SETTEXTMODE messages, also WM_UPDATEUISTATE, also basic WM_TEXT message - no luck. It sems like this merssage really works ( enables detection ) while sending keyboard strokes ( virtual keycodes ), but not when text has been modified. Also - I am thinking to rewrite code to make RichEdit Control dynamic. Would this fix the problem? Maybe solution is to override OnPaint / OnDraw method to avoid highlight ( formatting ) losing when collapsing or expanding form? Weird is that my Embarcadero Documentation says this function must work in any moment text has been modified. Why it does not work? Any help appreciated. • How can I work around WinXP using ports 1025-5000 as ephemeral?

  If you create a TCP client socket with port 0 instead of a non-zero port, then the operating system chooses any free ephemeral port for you. Most OSes choose ephemeral ports from the IANA dynamic port range of 49152-65535. However in Windows Server 2003 and earlier (including XP) Microsoft used ports 1025-5000 as the ephemeral range, according to their bind() documentation. I run multiple Java services on the same hardware. On rare occasions, this range collides with well-known ports that I use for other services (e.g. port 4160 for Jini discovery). While rare, this has caused real problems. Is there any easy way to tell Windows or Java to use a different port range for client sockets? Microsoft's docs indicate that I can change the high end of that range via the MaxUserPort TcpIP registry setting, but I see no way to change the low end. Update: I've made some progress on this. It looks like Microsoft has a concept of reserved ports that are exceptions to the ephemeral port range. There's a registry setting that lets you change this permanently and apparently there must be an API to do the same thing because there's a data structure that holds high/low values for reserved port ranges, but I can't find the actual function call anywhere... The registry solution may work, but now I'm fixated on this API.

• InfoPath FormControl on STA worker thread

  I have a .NET class that exposes two public methods: one to create an InfoPath form and another to Export to one of the supported formats. I’m using the Microsoft FormControl to do this. It’s hosted by a Form that does not get displayed. I get called by a Winforms app, but on an MTA worker thread instead of the UI thread. So I create an STA thread and execute on that, which works exactly once and then results in this exception: System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled Message="Unable to get the window handle for the 'FormControl' control. Windowless ActiveX controls are not supported." • Hide anchors using jQuery

  I've created a dynamic page that, depending on the view type, will sometimes utilize the anchor tags and other times not. Essentially, I want to be able to control if on click the page jumps to the anchor. Is it possible to hide anchor tags using jQUery, so they are essentially removed? I need to be able to re-enable the anchors when necessary, and always show the current anchor in the browser's address bar. It seems to work in FireFox, but not in Internet Explorer.   Hi, I have a simple procedure in SQL Server 2005 which takes some XML as input. The element attributes correspond to field names in tables. I'd like to be able to determine <elementName>, <attribNameX> dynamically as to avoid having to hardcode them into the procedure. How can I do this? • What are the alternatives to public fields?

  I am programming a game in java, and as the question title suggestions i am using public fields in my classes. (for the time being) From what i have seen public fields are bad and i have some understanding why. (but if someone could clarify why you should not use them, that would be appreciated) The thing is that also from what i have seen, (and it seems logical) is that using private fields, but using getters and setters to access them is also not good as it defeats the point of using private fields in the first place. So, my question is, what are the alternatives? or do i really have to use private fields with getters and setters? For reference here is one of my classes, and some of its methods.   This is a problem I've been struggling to solve for a while. I need a way to either replace code in the method with a parsed code from the template at compile time (PostSharp comes to mind) or to create a dynamic proxy (Linfu or Castle).   Suppose you want to generate dynamic page titles that look like this: "It was all a dream, I used to read word up magazine" from "Juicy" by The Notorious B.I.G I.e., "LYRICS" from "SONG_NAME" by ARTIST However, your title can only be 69 characters total and this template will sometimes generate titles that are longer. One strategy for solving this problem is to truncate the entire string to 69 characters. However, a better approach is to truncate the less important parts of the string first. I.e., your algorithm might look something like this: Truncate the lyrics until the entire string is <= 69 characters If you still need to truncate, truncate the artist name until the entire string is <= 69 characters If you still need to truncate, truncate the song name until the entire string is <= 69 characters If all else fails, truncate the entire string to 69 characters Ideally the algorithm would also limit the amount each part of the string could be truncated. E.g., step 1 would really be "Truncate the lyrics to a minimum of 10 characters until the entire string is <= 69 characters" Since this is such a common situation, I was wondering if someone has a library or code snippet that can take care of it.

  hi guys, i am writing a little music-game for the iphone. I am almost done, this is the only issue which keeps me from rolling it out. any help to solve this is much appreciated. this is what i do: at my appDelegate I add my menu-view-screen to the window. the menu-view-screen acts as a container and controls which view gets presented to the user. means, on the menu-view-screen I got 4 buttons (new game, options, faq, highscore). when the user clicks on a button something as this happens: if (self.gameViewController == nil) { GameViewController *viewController = [[GameViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"GameViewController" bundle:nil]; self.gameViewController = viewController; [viewController release]; } [self.view addSubview:self.gameViewController.view]; [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(handleSwitchViewNotificationFromGameView:) name:@"SwitchView" object:gameViewController]; when the user returns to the menu, this piece of code gets executed: [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] removeObserver:self]; [self.gameViewController viewWillDisappear:YES]; [self.gameViewController.view removeFromSuperview]; this works fine for all screens but not for the gamescreen(well this is the only one with heaps of user-interaction) means the responsiveness of the iphone(when playing tones) gets really slow. The performance is fine when I display the gameview for the first time. it starts getting slower as soon as I add it to the menu-views-container-subviews again (addsubview) (basically open up a new game) any ideas what causes(or to get around) this? thanks heaps Best regards Tom

• Problem with UserControl with custom Dependency Property

  Hi, I'm writing a user control with a dependency property for a search text called SearchText. It is a dependency property because I want to allow consumers of the control to use data binding. The user control contains a WPF TextBox where the user can enter the search text. I could use data binding to connect the SearchText dependency property of the user control with the Text dependency property of the TextBox, but this binding only fires when the text box looses input focus. What I want is SearchText to be updated after every change of Text. So I have added a TextChanged event handler to the user control where I set SearchText to the value of Text. My Problem is, the SearchText binding doesn't work, the source never gets updated. What am I doing wrong? • How to use generic (NSObject) controller with subviews of a UIViewController?

  I have a UIViewController that is loading several subviews at different times based on user interaction. I originally built all of these subviews in code, with no nib files. Now I am moving to nib files with custom UIView subclasses. Some of these subviews display static data, and I am using loadNibNamed:owner:options: to load them into the view controller. Others contain controls that I need to access. I (sort of) understand the reasons Apple says to use one view controller per screen of content, using generic controller objects (NSObjects) to manage subsections of a screen. So I need a view controller, a generic controller, a view class and a nib. How do I put this all together? My working assumptions and subsequent questions: I will associate the view class with the nib in the 'class identity' drop down in IB. The view controller will coordinate overall screen interactions. When necessary, it will create an instance of the generic controller. Does the generic controller load the nib? How? Do I define the outlets and actions in that view class, or should they be in the generic controller? How do I pass messages between the view controller and the generic controller? If anyone can point me to some sample code using a controller in this way, it will go a long way to helping me understand. None of the books or stackoverflow posts I've read have quite hit the spot yet.

• Finding a MIME type for a file on windows

  Is there a way to get a file's MIME type using some system call on Windows? I'm writing an IIS extension in C++, so it must be callable from C++, and I do have access to IIS if there is some functionality exposed. Obviously, IIS itself must be able to do this, but my googling has been unable to find out how. I did find this .net related question here on SO, but that doesn't give me much hope (as neither a good solution nor a C++ solution is mentioned there). I need it so I can serve up dynamic files using the appropriate content type from my app. My plan is to first consult a list of MIME types within my app, then fall back to the system's MIME type listing (however that works; obviously it exists since it's how you associate files with programs). I only have a file extension to work with in some cases, but in other cases I may have an actual on-disk file to examine. Since these will not be user-uploaded files, I believe I can trust the extension and I'd prefer an extension-only lookup solution since it seems simpler and faster. Thanks!

• Problems importing WAR files in Eclipse?

  I was unfortunately forced to result to uploading a WAR file as my backup for a web application I am working on. Luckily I have the most recent WAR file available. I am using Eclipse IDE and am using the Web Tools plugin for all the J2EE work that I am doing with the Dynamic Web Application Project. When I imported my WAR file, and ran it on a local server, everything works fine. The problem I a ran into is that in the Java Resources/src folder that all my packages and .java files were now only consists of all the same packages, but they are empty. I checked to see if I could find the files and I found the .class files in an "Imported files" folder that is not accessible in the Eclipse Project Explorer. I believe that I need to do some type of build or something so that my .java files are available for me, but unfortunately this is one area where I lack. One thing I would also like to know is, one way or the other, am I able to obtain the .java source code files if I have access to the .class files? Also, I would like to configure this environment as it was before where my Java Resources:src folder contaiend the packages and .java files.

I want this component to generate html like this: <img src="someimg123.png" width="200" height="300"/> The problem is that I have some method which can receive data and return image, like: public RenderedImage getChartImage (Collection<Integer> data) { ... } and I also have a component for drawing dynamic image: <o:dynamicImage width="200" height="300" data="#{bean.readyChartImage}/> This component generates html just as I need but it's parameter is array of bytes or RenderedImage i.e. it needs method in bean like this: public RenderedImage getReadyChartImage () { ... } So, one approach is to use propertyChangedListener on submit to set data (Collection<Integer>) for drawing chart and then use <o:dynamicImage /> component. But I'd like to create my own component which receives data and draws chart. I'm using facelets but it's not so important indeed. Any ideas how to create the desired component? P.S. One solution I was thinking about is not to use <o:dynamicImage/> and use some servlet to stream image. But I don't know how to implement that correctly and how to tie jsf component with servlet and how to save already built chart images (generating new same image for each request can cause performance problems imho) and so on..

• JQuery val() does not work for textarea in Opera

  I am displaying a modal dialog using jQuery. This dialog has a textarea control on it. But on submitting this dialog, the value of this textarea is not recognized by jQyery for some reason. It always comes blank. This works perfectly in other browsers. I put alert to display the value but it looks blank. Can anybody help me in this regards? Controls <input type="text" id="txtGroupName"/> <textarea rows="3" cols="30" id="txtDescription"></textarea> jQuery code which used this value var postData = new Object(); postData.GroupName = $('#txtGroupName').val(); postData.Description = $('#txtDescription').val(); $('#txtDescription').val() comes blank but $('#txtGroupName').val() is read correctly as it is a input field. One more finding about this issue: When I put alert in my update function after populating the control value on page load, this alert displays the existing value properly. But it displays only existing value. It does not display the edited value after submitting the modal box.

• How to create a semi transparent window in WPF that allows mouse events to pass through

  I am trying to create an effect similar to the Lights out /lights dim feature in Adobe Lightroom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87hNd3vaENE) except in WPF. What I tried was to create another window over-top of my existing window, make it transparent and put a semi transparent Path geometry on it. But I want mouse events to be able to pass through this semi transparent window (on to windows below). This is a simplified version of what I have: <Window x:Class="LightsOut.MaskWindow" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" AllowsTransparency="True" WindowStyle="None" ShowInTaskbar="False" Topmost="True" Background="Transparent"> <Grid> <Button HorizontalAlignment="Left" Height="20" Width="60">click</Button> <Path IsHitTestVisible="False" Stroke="Black" Fill="Black" Opacity="0.3"> <Path.Data> <RectangleGeometry Rect="0,0,1000,1000 "/> </Path.Data> </Path> </Grid> The window is fully transparent, so on places where the Path doesn't cover, mouse events pass right through. So far so good. The IsHitTestvisible is set to false on the path object. So mouse events will pass through it to other controls on the same form (ie you can click on the Button, because it is on the same form). But mouse events wont pass through the Path object onto windows that are below it. Any ideas? Or better ways to solve this problem? Thanks.

• Legitimate uses of the Function constructor

  As repeatedly said, it is considered bad practice to use the Function constructor (also see the ECMAScript Language Specification, 5th edition, § 15.3.2.1): new Function ([arg1[, arg2[, … argN]],] functionBody) (where all arguments are strings containing argument names and the last (or only) string contains the function body). To recapitulate, it is said to be slow, as explained by the Opera team: Each time […] the Function constructor is called on a string representing source code, the script engine must start the machinery that converts the source code to executable code. This is usually expensive for performance – easily a hundred times more expensive than a simple function call, for example. (Mark ‘Tarquin’ Wilton-Jones) Though it's not that bad, according to this post on MDC (I didn't test this myself using the current version of Firefox, though). Crockford adds that [t]he quoting conventions of the language make it very difficult to correctly express a function body as a string. In the string form, early error checking cannot be done. […] And it is wasteful of memory because each function requires its own independent implementation. Another difference is that a function defined by a Function constructor does not inherit any scope other than the global scope (which all functions inherit). (MDC) Apart from this, you have to be attentive to avoid injection of malicious code, when you create a new Function using dynamic contents. Lots of disadvantages and it is intelligible that ECMAScript 5 discourages the use of the Function constructor by throwing an exception when using it in strict mode (§ 13.1). That said, T.J. Crowder says in an answer that [t]here's almost never any need for the similar […] new Function(...), either, again except for some advanced edge cases. So, now I am wondering: what are these “advanced edge cases”? Are there legitimate uses of the Function constructor?
