• What platform were old TV video games developed on?

    - by Mihir
I am very eager to know how TV video games (which we all used to play in our childhood) were developed and on which platform. I know how games are developed for mobile devices, Windows PC's and Mac but I'm not getting how (in those days) Contra, Duck Hunt and all those games were developed. As they have high graphics and a large number of stages. So how did they manage to develop games in such a small size environment and with lower configuration platform?

  • JavaOne 2013: (Key) Notes of a conference – State of the Java platform and all the roadmaps by Amis

    - by JuergenKress
Last week’s JavaOne conference provided insights in the roadmap of the Java platform as well as in the current state of things in the Java community. The close relationship between Oracle and IBM concerning Java, the (continuing) lack of such a relationship with Google, the support from Microsoft for Java applications on its Azure cloud and the vibrant developer community – with over 200 different Java User Groups in many countries of the world. There were no major surprises or stunning announcements. Java EE 7 (release in June) was celebrated, the progress of Java 8 SE explained as well as the progress on Java Embedded and ME. The availability of NetBeans 7.4 RC1 and JDK 8 Early Adopters release as well as the open sourcing of project Avatar probably were the only real news stories. The convergence of JavaFX and Java SE is almost complete; the upcoming alignment of Java SE Embedded and Java ME is the next big consolidation step that will lead to a unified platform where developers can use the same skills, development tools and APIs on EE, SE, SE Embedded and ME development. This means that anything that runs on ME will run on SE (Embedded) and EE – not necessarily the reverse because not all SE APIs are part of the compact profile or the ME environment. However, the trimming down of the SE libraries and the increased capabilities of devices mean that a pretty rich JVM runs on many devices – such as JavaFX 8 on the Raspberry PI. The major theme of the conference was Internet of Things. A world of things that are smart and connected, devices like sensors, cameras and equipment from cars, fridges and television sets to printers, security gates and kiosks that all run Java and are all capable of sending data over local network connections or directly over the internet. The number of devices that has these capabilities is rapidly growing. This means that the number of places where Java programs can help program the behavior of devices is growing too. It also means that the volume of data generated is expanding and that we have to find ways to harvest that data, possibly do a local pre-processing (filter, aggregate) and channel the data to back end systems. Terms typically used are edge devices (small, simple, publishing data), gateways (receiving data from many devices, collecting and consolidating, pre-processing, sending onwards to back end – typically using real time event processing) and enterprise services – receiving the data-turned-information from the gateways to further consolidate, distribute and act upon. A cheap device like the Raspberry PI is a perfect way to get started as a Java developer with what embedded (device) programming means and how interaction with physical input and output takes place. Roadmaps The over all progress on Java is visualized in this overview: Read the full article here. • How to design the scenarios in a platform game?

    - by ReyLitch
I am developing a 3D platform game like Metroid Fusion with XNA. I have many classes for different elements as models, game screens, postprocessing and so on. Now I want to start designing the scenarios but I think that the scenarios needed in a platform game are not as conventional (by conventional I say something like this). I am very lost and not know where to start and how to structure it. Thanks in advance.

  • What files does JDIC need to run?

    - by Domchi
I'm trying to call JDIC from my application, but I can't get it to run. What files do I need and where? From what I've been able to gather from their site, I basically need to put jdic.jar in classpath... however there is also a lib folder with jdic.jar with a bit different size, and jdic_native_applet.jar, jdic_stub_unix.jar, jdic_stub_windows.jar and several folders with what I gather are platform specific files. I get this exception when instantiating AssociationService: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.jdesktop.jdic.filetypes.internal.AppAssociationReaderFactory_windows at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:200) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:188) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:307) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:301) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:252) at org.jdesktop.jdic.filetypes.AssociationService.<init>(Unknown Source) at QuickTest.main(QuickTest.java:101) I've tried last "official" release and last alpha release. I'm running Java 6 and Win7 64bit. Does JDIC even work under Win7 (or 64bit, although I use 32bit Java)? I see no release after 2006, and no activity in the project after about 2008... while Win7 came in 2009. I know that parts of JDIC, like Desktop, were included in Java 6, however that doesn't seem to be the case with file associations. And if it doesn't, are there any (hopefully cross-platform) alternatives for managing file associations? There are some things for Windows only that I tried, but that requires running native commands with administrator privileges which I don't know how to pull, apart from asking user to run my app as administrator and then use Runtime.exec()... If there are no alternatives to JDIC, I'm interested if anyone has managed to handle file associations well with cross-platform installers?

  • Epson Artisan 800 on Ubuntu/Linux

    - by Tim Lytle
Update for Ubuntu 10.04: Printing should work 'out-of-box', scanning still needs the newer sane backend. Looking for a known good way to setup an Epson Artisan 800 on Ubuntu specifically or any linux box in general. It is a printer/scanner with ethernet/wifi/usb. I'd like to use it as a network printer/scanner being able to do both from my Windows and Ubuntu machines; however, if it needs to be physically connected to a computer (preferably the Ubuntu machine) that is doable (again, then sharing print/scan functions to the network). Basically, I'm looking for someone who has used this printer/scanner (or similar) in a multi-platform environment to share how the set it up and how well it worked. Updated: A little more information, like most printers (I expect) the documentation for the printer basically says, "don't use plug-n-play, run our setup CD from your Windows/Mac system", to do anything (set it up for network use even). I guess that's to make it easy for anyone else to setup, but when you're looking to use it with an unsupported (by Epson's documentation) OS, you're just stuck on your own. What I was hoping for was someone who could say, "Forget the bundled software, do [this] to set it up on wifi manually, install [this] to connect to the scanner from [os], printing works with [this] driver - at least that's how I set it up." I'll will (and have so far) use the information here, and post my own setup when I'm done, if there's no one else out there with that experience.

  • Why is this iptables rule that does port forwarding not working?

    - by videoguy
I have a server bound to localhost:7060. It is using ipv6 socket instead of ipv4. Below is netstat outout. # netstat -an Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp 0 0 10.200.32.98:1720 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:4122 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:4123 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:4123 127.0.0.1:43051 ESTABLISHED tcp 0 0 10.200.32.98:5555 10.200.32.44:53162 ESTABLISHED tcp6 0 0 :::5060 :::* LISTEN tcp6 0 0 ::ffff:127.0.0.1:7060 :::* LISTEN tcp6 0 0 :::23 :::* LISTEN tcp6 0 0 ::ffff:10.200.32.98:23 ::ffff:10.200.32.142:43505 ESTABLISHED tcp6 0 0 ::ffff:127.0.0.1:43051 ::ffff:127.0.0.1:4123 ESTABLISHED tcp6 0 0 ::ffff:10.200.32.98:23 ::ffff:10.200.32.44:53195 ESTABLISHED udp6 0 0 :::5060 :::* CLOSE # I want to setup a port forwarding rule that accepts connections on port 24 (on all interfaces loopback as well as eth0) and forward the data to localhost:7060. This is how I am setting up the iptables rule: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 24 -j DNAT --to 127.0.0.1:7060** It is not working. When I telnet from different box, I see the following $telnet 10.200.32.98 24 Trying 10.200.32.98... If I change the server to bind to *:7060 and set the following rule, it seems to work fine. iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 24 -j REDIRECT --to-port 7060 But that will make my server available on WAN interface which I don't like. I feel it had something to do with ipv6 socket (tcp6 line in netstat output). This whole thing is done on an Android device with custom built Android platform image. How do I get this working?

  • Oracle and Partners release CAMP specification for PaaS Management

    - by macoracle
Cloud Application Management for Platforms The public release of the Cloud Application Management for Platforms (CAMP) specification, an initial draft of what is expected to become an industry standard self service interface specification for Platform as a Service (PaaS) management, represents a significant milestone in cloud standards development. Created by several players in the emerging cloud industry, including Oracle, the specification is being submitted to the OASIS standards organization (draft charter) where it will be finalized in an open development process. CAMP is targeted at application developers and deployers for self service management of their application on a Platform-as-a-Service cloud. It is closely aligned with the application development process where applications are typically developed in an Application Development Environment (ADE) and then deployed into a private or public platform cloud. CAMP standardizes the model behind an application’s dependencies on platform components and provides a standardized format for moving applications between the ADE and the cloud, and if and when desirable, between clouds. Once an application is deployed, CAMP provides users with a standardized self service interface to the PaaS offering, allowing the cloud consumer to manage the lifecycle of the application on that platform and the use of the underlying platform services. The CAMP interface includes a RESTful binding of the CAMP model onto the standard HTTP protocol, using JSON as the encoding for the model resources. The model for CAMP includes resources that represent the Application, its Components and any Platform Components that they depend on. It's important PaaS Cloud consumers understand that for a PaaS cloud, these are the abstractions that the user would prefer to work with, not Virtual Machines and the various resources such as compute power, storage and networking. PaaS cloud consumers would also not like to become system administrators for the infrastructure that is hosting their applications and component services. CAMP works on this more abstract level, and yet still accommodates platforms that are built using an underlying infrastructure cloud. With CAMP, it is up to the cloud provider whether or not this underlying infrastructure is exposed to the consumer. One major challenge addressed by the CAMP specification is that of ensuring that application deployment on a new platform is as seamless and error free as possible. This becomes even more difficult when the application may have been developed for a different platform and is now moving to a new one. In CAMP this is accomplished by matching the requirements of the application and its components to the specific capabilities of the underlying platform. This needs to be done regardless of whether there are existing pools of virtualized platform resources (such as a database pool) which are provisioned(on the basis of a schema for example), or whether the platform component is really just a set of virtual machines drawn from an infrastructure pool. The interoperability between platform clouds that CAMP offers means that a CAMP client such as an ADE can target multiple clouds with a single common interface. Applications can even be spread across multiple platform clouds and then managed without needing to create a specialized adapter to manage the components running in each cloud. The development of CAMP has been an effort by a small set of companies, but there are significant advantages to this approach. For example, the way that each of these companies creates their platforms is different enough, to ensure that CAMP can cover a wide range of actual deployments. CAMP is now entering the next phase of development under the guidance of an open standards organization, OASIS, which will likely broaden it’s capabilities. We hope is to keep it concise and minimal, however, to ease implementation and adoption. Over time there will be many different types of platform components that applications can use and which need management. CAMP at this point only includes one example of this (in an appendix) – DataBase as a Service. I am looking forward to the start of the CAMP Technical Committee in OASIS and will do my best to ensure a successful development process. Hope to see you there.

  • All PHP sites stopped working on IIS7, internal server error 500

    - by TimothyP
I installed multiple drupal 7 sites using the Web Platform Installer on Windows Server 2008. Until know they worked without any problems, but recently internal server error 500 started to show up (once every so many requests), now it happens for all requests to any of the php sites. There's not much detail to go on, and nothing changed between the time when it was working and now (well nothing I know of anyway) The log file is flooded with messages such as [09-Aug-2011 09:08:04] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:08:16] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:08:16] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:08:20] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:08:22] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:08:51] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:09:56] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:09:57] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:12:13] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:15:09] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:15:09] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:21:28] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 [09-Aug-2011 09:21:28] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in Unknown on line 0 I have tried increasing the memory limit in php.ini as such: memory_limit = 512MB But that doesn't seem to solve the problem either. This is in the global php configuration in IIS When I looked at the sites one by one, I noticed that PHP seemed to have been disabled. PHP is not enabled. Register new PHP version to enable PHP via FastCGI So I tried to register the php version again C:\Program Files\PHP\v5.3\php-cgi.exe But when I try to apply the changes I get There was an error while performing this operation Details: Operation is not valid due to the current state of the object There doesn't seem to be any other information than that. I have no idea why all of a sudden php isn't available for the sites anymore. PS: I have rebooted IIS, the server, etc... This server is hosted on amazon S3, so I gave the server some more power Update These seem to be two different issues I used memory_limit=128MB instead of memory_limit=128M Notice the "M" instead of "MB" A memory_limit of 128M was not enough, had to increase it to 512M The first issue caused internal server errors for every request. Increasing to 512MB seemed to have solved the problem for a little while, but after a while the server errors return. Note that the PHP manager inside of IIS still shows there is no PHP available for the sites (the global config does see it as available) So the problem remains unsolved

  • Cross-platform embedded database/key-value store for C#

    - by Arne Claassen
I'm looking for a fast, embeddable key/value store with cursor semantics over key collections (or a simple embeddable DB) that I can use in .NET and mono. Need it to be open-source, would prefer an MIT or Apache style license over a GPL license. Not opposed to a library that needs bindings to be written, as long as binaries are available for both windows and linux. Options considered: SQLite - has bindings and native implementation, but single-threaded and not all that fast Embedded InnoDB - no .NET bindings i can find and it's GPLv2 Berkley DB - no .NET bindings i can find Tokyo Cabinet - no .NET bindings i can find and problematic to build on windows MadCow Memory-mapped data structures - GPLv2 Is there an option better than the above that i'm missing, or bindings for the above i don't know about?

I am developing this application on SDK 1.5.. when i test the application on 1.5 device it works good but when i try to run it on a 1.6 device i get a force close message with following logcat output: 03-19 09:31:35.206: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{com.abc.android/com.abc.android.app}: android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException: unable to open database file 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2454) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2470) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2200(ActivityThread.java:119) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(ActivityThread.java:1821) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4310) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): Caused by: android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException: unable to open database file 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.dbopen(Native Method) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.(SQLiteDatabase.java:1697) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.openDatabase(SQLiteDatabase.java:738) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.openOrCreateDatabase(SQLiteDatabase.java:760) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.openOrCreateDatabase(SQLiteDatabase.java:753) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.app.ApplicationContext.openOrCreateDatabase(ApplicationContext.java:473) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.content.ContextWrapper.openOrCreateDatabase(ContextWrapper.java:193) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteOpenHelper.getWritableDatabase(SQLiteOpenHelper.java:98) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at com.abc.android.DbAdapter.open(DbAdapter.java:101) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at com.abc.android.class1.onCreate(class1.java:105) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.app.Instrumentation.callActivityOnCreate(Instrumentation.java:1047) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2417) 03-19 09:31:35.226: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(224): ... 11 more DBAdapter.java public DbAdapter open() throws SQLException { Log.d("DbAdapter", "in DbAdapter open()"); mDbHelper = new DatabaseHelper(mCtx); mDb = mDbHelper.getWritableDatabase(); // line 101 return this; } DatabaseHelper(Context context) { super(context, DATABASE_NAME, null, DATABASE_VERSION); } @Override public void onCreate(SQLiteDatabase db) { db.execSQL(DATABASE_QUERY); } class1.java mDB = new DbAdapter(Class1.this); mDB.open(); // line 105 Please help..what do i do????

  • RAD/Eclipse Eclipse Test and Performance Tools Platform, export data to text file

    - by Berlin Brown
I am using the RAD (also on Eclipse) Test and Performance Monitoring. I monitor CPU performance time with it, on particular methods, etc. It is a good tool for my monitoring my applications but I can't copy/paste or export the output to a text file format. So I can send to the others. There has to be a way to export this? Also, I can save the output to file but it is '*.trcxml' binary file? has anyone seen a parser for this file format?

  • Using times on the Android platform.

    - by Tarmon
Hey Everyone, I have a lot of time information in the format of hh:mm and I was wondering if there is a good way to take this information and compare it to the current time. Say I have a list of times for a day and I want to find out which time in this array of strings is the first that has not already past in this day. I was looking at the Calender API and I figured I could break the strings up into hours and minutes by splitting it at the ":" and then create a calender object from that but that seems rather inefficient. Just looking for some input; thanks, Rob <string-array name="example">
6:58

7:41

8:08

8:28

8:48

9:08

9:43

10:13

10:43

11:13

11:43

12:09

12:29

12:49

1:09

1:29

1:49

2:09

2:29

2:49

3:09

3:29

3:49

4:09

4:29

4:49

5:09

5:29

5:49

6:29

7:09

7:47

8:27

9:07

9:47

10:27
</string-array>

  • Character encoding issues when generating MD5 hash cross-platform

    - by rogueprocess
This is a general question about character encoding when using MD5 libraries in various languages. My concern is: suppose I generate an MD5 hash using a native Python string object, like this: message = "hello world" m = md5() m.update(message) Then I take a hex version of that MD5 hash using: m.hexdigest() and send the message & MD5 hash via a network, let's say, a JMS message or a HTTP request. Now I get this message in a Java program in the form of a native Java string, along with the checksum. Then I generate an MD5 hash using Java, like this (using the Commons Codec library): String md5 = org.apache.commons.codec.digest.DigestUtils.DigestUtils.md5Hex(s) My feeling is that this is wrong because I have not specified character encodng at either end. So the original hash will be based on the bytes of the Python version of the string; the Java one will be based on the bytes of the Java version of the string , these two byte sequences will often not be the same - is that right? So really I need to specify "UTF-8" or whatever at both ends right? (I am actually getting an intermittent error in my code where the MD5 checksum fails, and I suspect this is the reason - but because it's intermittent, it's difficult to say if changing this fixes it or not. ) Thank you!

  • ::LookupAccountSid API Extremely Slow When Targeting x64 Platform (Windows 7)

    - by Chris
During our application startup, we are making a call to ::LookupAccountSid(). When I build targeting the x86 architecture, this call is nearly instantaneous. However, when I target x64 (debug or release), the call generally takes over 40s to complete. Since this is occurring during application startup, the result is fairly unpleasant as it will appear to the user that the application is not launching. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a Dell Studio XPS 16 (Intel Core i7 Q 720). Our application is a native Windows application written in C++. My compiler options (CCOPTS) and linker options (LINKOPTS) are as follows: CCOPTS = "/nologo /Gz /W3 /EHs /c /DWIN32 /D_MBCS /Ob1 /vmg /vmv /Zi /MD /DNDEBUG /DDV_BUILD_DLL /DIV_BUILD_DLL /DDVASSERT_EXCEPTION /Zc:wchar_t-" LINKOPTS = "/manifest:no /nologo /machine:X64 kernel32.lib user32.lib gdi32.lib winspool.lib comdlg32.lib advapi32.lib shell32.lib ole32.lib oleaut32.lib uuid.lib odbc32.lib odbccp32.lib /DEBUG /subsystem:windows /DLL" Any help would be greatly appreciated :D
