  We have problems with Win 7 PC's when the user only log on locally on (a domain joined) PC, but still use the Windows printserver. Installed printers suddently stop working and seem to appear offline. In Windows XP the (logged on locally) user would be prompted to autheticate to the domain when printing, but in Windows 7 this feature seem to be faulty or not implemented. I assume the problem is a timeout on the Kerberos ticket. Of course the user has to authenticate to install the printer from the printserver, and that works fine, but in time the authenticaton stops, and no prompt appear. Any suggestions how we can "force" a prompt to authenticate like it happened in XP?

• ARR servers in the Load Balancing pool automatically go from unavailable to available

  I have 3 IIS web servers in an ARR web farm. When we do rolling releases, we take one server offline as a backup server and move it into an "Unavailable State" I have noticed that with ARR, servers will not stay in this state...they come back online automatically hours or days later. Does anyone know how to remedy this situation? This is very bad as the server that is down is typically not running the correct version of our code. I need to keep a server unavailable until i tell it otherwise.

• Is this a valid backup strategy for MongoDB?

  I've got a single dedicated server with a MongoDB database of around 10GB. I need to do daily backups, but I can't have downtime with the database. Is it possible to use a replica set on a single disk (with 2 instances of mongod running on different ports), and simply take the secondary one offline and backup the data files to an offsite storage such as S3 (journaling is turned on)? Or would using master/slave be better than a replica set? Is this viable, and if so, what potential problems could I have? If not, how do I conceptualize this to work?

  I have two drives that used to be part of a single RAID1 volume but it appears that one of them went offline for some time, something I've noticed just now when I rebooted my system. • Best technique for reusing a Windows system image across configurations

  We are a small company that provides solutions for ventilation systems. Part of the solution is a "controller" which communicates with the ventilation equipment. These controllers are simply Dell computers that come with our Windows 7 system image on them and sometimes some special hardware. We typically do a batch of 10 controllers at a time. We have been using Norton Ghost to apply the system image, but this process breaks because Dell changes the system configuration often, and our Windows image now does not contain the correct drivers. This is especially a problem when they change the RAID controller. To improve this, I see 2 options: use some kind of virtualization and install a hypervisor on each PC. This would solve the driver problem, but probably cause trouble with our special hardware. use some method of adding the proper drivers to our Windows image in offline mode. I haven't got much experience in either of these approaches. How would you solve our problem?

  Hello again. I'm after a tool to test how long a password could stand up to a hacking/cracking technique such as brute force as two passwords that are critical to a work system is one word that is in the dictionary, and another is a word in the dictionary with a capital letter and a number instead of a letter. I'd prefer it to be offline and free that you can run on a computer to see how long the password will hold out. Maybe even at the windows login prompt but I realise such programmes may be shady and erring on the side of illegal. Anybody have any suggestions?

  Hello, I have a Windows-7 Desktop at office. There is a network printer Dell MFP2335dn which is installed on this dekstop. The printer worked fine for me(I could print from my desktop), sometime back but recently i am not been able to print. When i give a print job, it stays in the queue for a long time, nothing gets printed. When i see the status of the printer in "Devices and Printers", it says - Offline. I removed the printer installed on my Desktop, and tried to install the drivers downloaded from Dell website: http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R241894&formatcnt=0&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=349205 But still the same problem. • How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • Mysql dump of slave w/o missing Master data

I need to set up another slave so obviously I will need to make the dump from the current slave because I CAN NOT take the master offline for a second.   Context: I make backups / archives, primarily of photos. I'm experimenting with Bup, which is designed for backup to hard disk. Basically it creates Git repos which include packfiles of up to 1GB. But I still need last-ditch backups to keep offline and move offsite (and keeping them on read-only media is good too!). What are the options for archiving and splitting large files over several discs like CDs (and reading them back!)? I'd prefer methods which will stay readable in future. are portable e.g. to Windows. have known simple implementations, so I could re-implement them myself if necessary. (Using Bup packs will stretch my robustness budget. So I want to be confident about how other parts of the system would behave). I heard split archives are possible with both ZIP and 7-Zip. Is that right?

• Configure fallback redis server

  I am using redis as a cache server. Can I somehow configure multiple redis servers, that the cache is fully functional (read/write) even if some of them go offline? I looked into master-slave, but the problem I see there is, that if the master fails, and I allow writes to the slaves, they get overwritten once the master is up again. Now the master just serves the old data. The only solution I could come up was disabling write-to-disc, but that sucks as I loose everything if I have to restart the master. And I guess, slaves wouldn't be synced anymore if the master is gone.

• How can I switch Linux running OS from disk to running from RAM without restarting?

  Is it possible to switch to running Linux from RAM or RAM disk after starting starting initially from disk? eg. You need to make an image of your hard disk, FTP it to a remote location, some time later you want the image back, so you start the system from disk as usual, restore the image you FTP'd from the remote location back into place. More like a CloneZilla backup and restore, without booting the server from CD or USB disk, but starting from the normal hard disk? Notes on environment I should have mentioned it earlier. It is a remotely hosted VM where I cannot boot into a recovery console mode or do a netinstall. It will always boot onto the same disk. Which means that if there is some serious corruption I can't repair it offline, which is why being able to ftp a previously saved backup into place is so important

• Loked out: Windows 8.1 administrator account disabled

  I installed a Windows 8.1 laptop. By default the Administrator account is disabled. During the install process, the user created belongs to the administrators group (call it FirstUser). I installed various softwares, I created a normal account for the user (call it RealUser), and I mistakenly deleted FirstUser account (while I was connected under this account). I rebooted and... oh well, I understood the mistake. I no longer have access to any administrative privileges. The laptop is still in workgroup. I tested with Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor (latest version): activated Administrator account, and blancked its password (no option to set a new one) gave RealUser account administrative privileges After reboot, only RealUser account is still available. Once logged in, I'm unable to access anything requiring administrative provileges. Does anyone know a way to successfully activate the Administrator account, or whatever ?

• Drive stopped working on windows server 2003 and I receive a "controller error"

  I can access the server in safe mode. I have a Proliant 360 Hp server with Windows server 2003 R2. The event viewer is completely filled up with this error: the driver detected a controller error on Device\Harddisk3\DR3 I individuated the drive affected. It is drive H that is a secondary non mirrored drive. When I access anything on that drive I receive: "the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" What should I do? Is this just a driver issue or a hard drive failure? Please give me a quick help as my websites are offline due to this. Any suggestion is welcome!

  My exchange box went offline this AM. The logs show The device, \Device\Harddisk1, has a bad block. I tried running chkdsk D: /x /r but that didn't help either. I went to the Exchange Manager and tried to move the .stm file from D: to C: but got Exchange System Manager The database files in this store are corrupted. • There is a way to change the SkyDrive default path in Windows 8.1?

  The deeper integration with SkyDrive is truly beneficial, but my laptop has a somewhat small primary drive (an 128 Gb MSATA SSD), and when possible, i try to move installations and other folders(like Documents and Downloads) to the secondary, 1 Tb drive. But i couldn't find any option to change the SkyDrive folder (it used to be in the secondary drive prior to the upgrade). Anyone have some idea how to change it? Thanks in advance! Edit 1: I've looked for an option to change this folder, to no avail. Really, it could only be a problem if i choose the option to keep my files offline, but it is exactly the option that i was looking for.   I have +- 5yrs old pc runnig windows 7 and I've been getting blue screen recently. I had win 8 and I got a lof of erros with ram memory, so I reinstalled back to Win 7. (I have 2x 2 GB RAM) To make a better image of my errors - I get them while writing email, installing nvidia driver, sound driver, running RAM test. I got a log of my last error, could anyone tell me what is it? Should I get new RAM memories? • Bold font shortcut in WordPress editor in Mac OS X? (The equivalent to Ctrl+b in Windows)

  I've recently acquired a MacBook Air and I'm getting used to Mac OS X shortcuts. One that I can't find, though, is the change to bold a piece of text previously selected in the WordPress editor. I do this with a simple Ctrl+b after selecting the text in Windows, but the expected Command+b in Mac OS X does not work (in WordPress at least. It seems it works in other editors online and offline). Is there a shortcut for it... and for italics?

• How do I save a Web Page?

  Hi all, I have tried many programs and solutions to save web pages (html, mht, doc, pdf). My favorite software was an addon for browsers from Omnipage (OCR). What I like about this is that it prints the whole page (continuously) and it doesn't write the URL or page numbers on the page, which I find annoying. Does anyone know a software like this one (freeware or not)? I tried CutePDF and it didn't work for me. I want this for my offline use and would prefer a PDF.
