• Rails3. How do I display two different objects in a search?

  I am using a simple search that displays search results: @adds = Add.search(params[:search]) In addition to the search results I'm trying to utilize a method, nearbys(), which displays objects that are close in proximity to the search result. The following method displays objects which are close to 2, but it does not display object 2. How do I display object 2 in conjunction with the nearby objects? @adds = Add.find(2).nearbys(10) While the above code functions, when I use search, @adds = Add.search(params[:search]).nearbys(10) a no method error is returned, undefined methodnearbys' for Array:0x30c3278` How can I search the model for an object AND use the nearbys() method AND display all results returned?

• JavaScript try/catch: errors or exceptions?

  OK. I may be splitting hairs here, but my code isn't consistent and I'd like to make it so. But before I do, I want to make sure I'm going the right way. In practice this doesn't matter, but this has been bothering me for a while so I figured I'd ask my peers... Every time I use a try... catch statement, in the catch block I always log a message to my internal console. However my log messages are not consistent. They either look like: catch(err) { DFTools.console.log("someMethod caught an error: ",err.message); ... or: catch(ex) { DFTools.console.log("someMethod caught an exception: ",ex.message); ... Obviously the code functions properly either way but it's starting to bother me that I sometimes refer to "errors" and sometimes to "exceptions". Like I said, maybe I'm splitting hairs but which is the proper terminology? "Exception", or "Error"?

• Java variables -> replace? RAM optimization

  Hi guys, I just wanted to know what happens behind my program when I declare and initialize a variable and later initialize it again with other values, e.g. an ArrayList or something similar. What happens in my RAM, when I say e.g. this: ArrayList<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); ...add values, work with it and so on.... al = new ArrayList<String>(); So is my first ArrayList held in RAM or will the second ArrayList be stored on the same position where the first one has been before? Or will it just change the reference of "al"? If it is not replaced...is there a way to manually free the RAM which was occupied by the first arraylist? (without waiting for the garbage collector) Would it help to set it first =null? Nice greetings, poeschlorn

• Exporting query results to a file on the fly

  Hi all, I need to export the results of a query to a csv file in an FTP folder. Is it possible to achieve this within a stored procedure? If yes, comes yet another constraint: can I achieve this without sysadmin privileges, aka without using xp_cmdshell + BCP utility? If no to 2., does the caller have to have sysadmin privileges or would it suffice if the SP owner has sysadmin privileges? Here are some more details to the problem: The SP must export and transfer the file on the fly and raise error if something went wrong. The caller must get a response immediately, i.e. in case of no error, he can assume that the results are successfully transferred to the folder. Therefore, a DTS/SSIS job that runs every N minutes is not an option. I know the problem smells like I will have to do this at application level, but I would be more than happy if all those stuff could be done from T-SQL.

  Hi, We have an AIR app and using a datagrid. We want to store the dataGrid.columns array in mySQL DB through PHP. This is needed because the user can customise the column headers of the datagrid and his preference needs to be stored and shown to him on his next login. Using HTTPService, we tried sending the dataGrid.columns array as a string, as follows, var ht:HTTPService = new HTTPService(); ht.url = Config.getServerURL(); ht.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; ht.resultFormat = "text"; ht.request["action"] = "updateGrid"; ht.request["headercolumns"] = colsArray.toString(); The data is stord as comma separated array string in DB. When we retrieve it back, cannot seem to cast it back to the DatagridColumns and assign it. Please let me know. Regards Jada.

• Can I encrypt value in C# and use that with SQL Server 2005 symmetric encryption?

  To be more specific, if I create a symmetric key with a specific KEY_SOURCE and ALGORITHM (as described here), is there any way that I can set up the same key and algorithm in C# so that I can encrypt data in code, but have that data decrypted by the symmetric key in Sql Server? From the research I've done so far, it seems that the IDENTITY_VALUE for the key is also baked into the cypher text, making things even more complex. I'm thinking about just trying all the various ways I can think of, ie hashing the KEY_SOURCE using different hash algorithms for a key and trying different ways of encrypting the plain text until I get something that works. Or is that just futile? Has anyone else done this, any pointers? UPDATE Just to clarify, I want to use NHibernate on the client side, but theres a bunch of stored procedures on the database side that still perform decryption.

• asp.net application install folder

  Disclaimer: this is not a question about how to install asp.net or an application using it! Hi! I am pretty sure many of you have once installed some kind of forum, blog or CMS (mostly PHP powered applications). All of these contain a folder mostly named "install" where (after you copied the files to the webserver) point your browser to to complete the installation by entering for example database information (servername, username, password, ...). After that, most applications suggest that you delete this folder or at least change the permissions so nobody from the outside can access it anymore. Now to my question: how would you go about that in the asp.net world? I don't really like the "install folder"-approach and I thought there might be a different mechanism for .net/IIS. The person installing my application should be able to enter his database information as painless as possible, which should ultimatively be stored in the web.config file. If it makes a difference, I am using asp.net MVC. Thanks for your help!

I m having a ID column in that table. Now suppose after inserting this record the value of the ID corresponding to this record is 100. Now how this 100 value came to know? Does the previous value of ID ie 99 (Suppose) is stored somewhere in some variable/file in the ORM layer or before inserting this value a query was fired to know about the last inserted value or database is itself doing that or anything else???

  Hey, I have been given a general explanation of how a computer boots up. However a very loose definition to the term 'boot file' was given. Could someone explain 'boot file' to me in a very simple but concise manner? I have read about the POST, the clearing of registers, BIOS in the CMOS, etc. What I understand is that the boot file is different to the boot program. the boot program gets the system ready to accept an OS while the boot file contains some of the parameters by which the system will operate.   I have tables A, B, C, where A represents items which can have zero or more sub-items stored in C. B table only has 2 foreign keys to connect A and C. I have this sql query: select * from A where not exists (select * from B natural join C where B.id = A.id and C.value > 10); Which says: "Give me every item from table A where all sub-items have value less than 10. Is there a way to optimize this? And is there a way to write this not using exists operator?

• How can I fix the scroll bug when using Windows rich edit controls in wxpython?

  When using wx.TextCtl with the wx.TE_RICH2 option in windows, I get this strange bug with the auto-scroll when using the AppendText function. It scrolls so that all the text is above the visible area, which isn't very useful behaviour. I tried just adding a call to ScrollLines(-1) after appending the text - which does scroll it to the correct position - but this can lead to the window flashing when it auto-scrolls. So I'm looking for another way to automatically scroll to the bottom. So far, my solution is to bypass the AppendText functions auto-scroll and implement my own, like this: def append_text(textctrl, text): before_number_of_lines = textctrl.GetNumberOfLines() textctrl.SetInsertionPointEnd() textctrl.WriteText(text) after_number_of_lines = textctrl.GetNumberOfLines() textctrl.ScrollLines(before_number_of_lines - after_number_of_lines + 1) Is there a better way?

• Remote (RDP) utility with mstscax.dll

  I am looking for information on using mstscax.dll in VB. The goal is to create a utility that logs into a remote service in the same manner as remote desktop. However, my utility is not required to show the desktop. I have a series of commands that I will start off with that will look for users, reset logins, shadow, and message. I have been using a batch file on my RDP to perform these functions, but we are already looking for more functionality and power than what the batch commands can offer. I am googling 'mstscax.dll' but the results have been less than satisfactory although I continue to search. Does anyone have any good references? Is this even going to be possible?

  I am working with a large website written in Ruby on Rails. Thanks to the support for REST in Rails 2, the site's business logic is all accessible via a consistent XML API. Now I want to be able to easily write one or more JavaScript frontends to the site that interact with the generated Rails XML API. Ideally, an automated wrapper for the API could be created in JavaScript, since this would minimize the effort required in writing XML processing code for the more than 500 API functions. How, then, can I automatically generate a wrapper around a given XML API in JavaScript so that it's more pleasant to work with? I've worked with solutions of this nature for Java that generate classes and methods to wrap an API, so my current thinking is that I want something of that nature for JavaScript. I'd be open to an alternative take on the problem, though.

  Say we have a UTF-8 string $s and we need to shorten it so it can be stored in N bytes. Blindly truncating it to N bytes could mess it up. But decoding it to find the character boundaries is a drag. Is there a tidy way? [Edit 20100414] In addition to S.Mark’s answer: mb_strcut(), I recently found another function to do the job: grapheme_extract($s, $n, GRAPHEME_EXTR_MAXBYTES); from the intl extension. Since intl is an ICU wrapper, I have a lot of confidence in it.

By locks I mean any thread synchronization mechanisms, including Mutex, Semaphore, and even Interlocked, all of them. Is it possible at user level, without calling system functions? Ok, may be implementation is not effective, i am interested in theoretical possibility. If not what is the minimum means to do it? EDIT: Why immutable collections don't work. • Obtaining references to function objects on the execution stack from the frame object?

  Given the output of inspect.stack(), is it possible to get the function objects from anywhere from the stack frame and call these? If so, how? (I already know how to get the names of the functions.) Here is what I'm getting at: Let's say I'm a function and I'm trying to determine if my caller is a generator or a regular function? I need to call inspect.isgeneratorfunction() on the function object. And how do you figure out who called you? inspect.stack(), right? So if I can somehow put those together, I'll have the answer to my question. Perhaps there is an easier way to do this?

The reason is that if you simply python program.py > out then the file out will have the ANSI color codes, which look terrible if you open in a plain text editor. Any advice?

The problem I'm facing is - files would be stored in a public directory and easily accessed by anyone knowing the file url. Is there a way I can restrict file access to a certain user group?

However I could not figure out how to inset my HTML snippit into the view. It seems to need a URLRequest which I do not want. I have already stored the HTML content in memory and want to load and display it from memory. Any ideas how I should proceed?

• Huge file in Clojure and Java heap space error

  I posted before on a huge XML file - it's a 287GB XML with Wikipedia dump I want ot put into CSV file (revisions authors and timestamps). I managed to do that till some point. Before I got the StackOverflow Error, but now after solving the first problem I get: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space error. • XmlDocument caching memory usage

  We are seeing very high memory usage in .NET web applications which use XmlDocument. A small (~5MB) XML document is loaded into an XmlDocument object and stored in HttpContext.Cache for easy querying and XSLT transformation on each page load. The XML is modified on disk periodically so a cache has a dependency on the file. Such an application appears to be using hundreds of megabytes of RAM. I have experimented with requesting garbage collection on each request start, and this keeps the RAM usage far lower but I cannot imagine this is good practise. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can achieve the same goal but with lower RAM usage?

What is the best way to implement the multilingual support. I am planning to use the .Net localization feature but the website texts are stored in DB. For the controls ( form controls) , I can used resx file. Do I need to build two different pages ( one for LTR and another for RTL )? Or can I have one ASPx file for all the three languages?   I need to write a program for equivalence classes and get this outputs... (equiv '((a b) (a c) (d e) (e f) (c g) (g h))) => ((a b c g h) (d e f)) (equiv '((a b) (c d) (e f) (f g) (a e))) => ((a b e f g) (c d)) Basically, A set is a list in which the order doesn't matter, but elements don't appear more than once. The function should accept a list of pairs (elements which are related according to some equivalence relation), and return a set of equivalence classes without using iteration or assignment statements (e.g. do, set!, etc.). However, set utilities such as set-intersection, set-union and a function which eliminates duplicates in a list and built-in functions union, intersection, and remove-duplicates are allowed. Thanks a lot! By the way, It's not a homework question. A friend of mine need this piece of code to solve smilar questions.
