• Windows 7 / TCP/IP network share guide - looking for to resolve failure to mount lacie network drive but works on XP,Linux,Mac.

  Can anyone advise me of a really good, readable, Windows 7 TCP/IP network share guide, book, or reference. I want this because I cannot mount my Lacie 2big ethernet network drive in Windows 7 (32 bit home), but I can mount it in Windows XP Home 32bit, Ubuntu Linux 10.04 and Apple MacOS X. This drive is being mounted via the accompanying Lacie Ethernet Agent in XP (which I believe uses "Bonjour" protocol), on Mac and Linux it works without further need for software. Another Super User user has the same problem, but no answer: Trouble accessing network drives in Windows 7 I hope my take on the question shows a better willingness to investigate and do some digging - and therefore invite some suggestions to help with this. The drive is detected by Windows 7 (i.e. speech bubble "network drive found") but on trying to open an Explorer window, this remains blank with the Windows busy pointer. I'd prefer not to reinstall Windows 7 to see if that cures the problem, I'd rather understand what is happening/not happening, perhaps even compare differences with Windows XP. Suggestions, please for such guides or even the original problem itself. • What failure can kill a long running IRC client? [closed]

  I have an IRC bot that I built in PHP using sockets that attempts to run forever and (if disconnected) reconnects again. I have it listening to several channels. Apparently it's fairly resilient, because it can run for several days before the process ends and CRON has to start it up again. However, based on the fact the process ends I'm assuming there are other conditions I'm not accounting for that are causing problems. I have nothing in my error logs giving me a hint. In addition, sometimes the process will continue running - but I notice it's no longer present in any of the channels on the IRC server which makes me think it violated some part of the protocol. I have logic setup to handle: reply to PING's correctly reconnect on disconnect (and reconnect to channels) respond to private messages (so someone doesn't ban it) prevent memory leaks What other failure could be killing my long-running IRC client?

  My question is essentially entirely in the title, but let me add some points to prevent some "why on earth would you want to do that" sort of answers: This is more of a mind experiment than an attempt to implement real software. For fun. Don't worry about computational speed or the number of available memory bytes. Computers get faster and better all of the time. Imagine we have two data files: Mother.dna and Father.dna. What else would be required? (Bonus point for someone who tells me approx how many GB each file will be, and if the size of the files are exactly the same number of bytes for everyone alive on Earth!) There would ideally need to be a way to see what the egg becomes as it becomes a human adult. If you fancy, feel free to outline the design. I am initially thinking that there'd need to be some sort of volumetric voxel-based 3D environment for simulation purposes.

• /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with error after partitioning

  I just wanted to create a separate home partition on my Ubuntu 12.10 system. I booted the liveDVD, resized the sda2 partition (28gb of data resized to 30gb based on MiB [originally on a 100gb partition]) and made a new ext4 partition for the home folder. The drive is an SSD drive. I had changed the settings (noatime etc.) for SSD succesfully a week ago. On reboot I get the following error: /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with errors Inode 74669 has an invalid extent node (blk 6881289) fsd / [953] terminated with status 4 What would you suggest me to do? If I can avoid a clean install that would save me a lot of time (I had just done all the config). I was following this HOWTO, but I did not get to changing any of the files or configs other than those with gparted. I have a (two-week old) SSD Samsung drive which is functioning just fine (other specs see bottom of this question). Other specs: 64bit 12.10, i7, 8gb ram, nvidia.

  I frequently have multiple Eclipse-based projects running simultaneously, sometimes on different versions of Eclipse. I have made a mess of a few workspaces by accidentally opening them in the wrong version of Eclipse. To thwart my own forgetfulness, I went seeking a way to launch directly to a workspace and found it at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/209789/starting-eclipse-w-specific-workspace. Essentially, add the -data switch to your icon's open command, such as: C:\eclipse\eclipse.exe -data E:\MyData\Clients\Confidential\EclipseGCDPGive it a unique name and stick it on your Start Menu (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu). Makes my life a bit easier and hopefully yours, too.

• What are the differences between Bigloo and ECL from an embedding standpoint? [migrated]

  I've been looking to embed Lisp in some C++ code. Two options I'm interested in is Bigloo Scheme and ECL (Common Lisp). Reading through the docs they seem to support a very similar feature set. Obviously Bigloo is Scheme and ECL is CLisp, but what other differences do they have? In particular I'm interested in the following criteria: Ease of embedding (for C++, not just C). I don't want to write a bunch of boilerplate. Performance. Bigloo is performance based and has many compiler optimization options, although I can't find anything comparable for ECL. Style of coding. This one is more for Bigloo - is it more functional than ECL? I'm targeting this question towards someone who has used both.

• Need help trying to allow my remote PowerShell script to run on my Windows 2008 r2 Server

  I've got a Windows 2008 r2 server with Sql Server 2008 r2 installed. I've got a Sql Server Agent which tries to run a Powershell job, but fails :- Message Executed as user: FooServer\SqlServerUser. A job step received an error at line 1 in a PowerShell script. The corresponding line is '& '\\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1'' Correct the script and reschedule the job. The error information returned by PowerShell is: 'File \\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1 cannot be loaded. The file \\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1 is not digitally signed. The script will not execute on the system. Please see "get-help about_signing" for more details.. '. Process Exit Code -1. The step failed. Ok. So i run Powershell on that server then set the execution policy to unrestricted. To check .. PS C:\Users\theUser> Get-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted PS C:\Users\theUser> Kewl :) but it still doesn't work :( Ok ... what happens when i try to run the powershell from the command line....   I delivered a session today that describes what's new in Office 2010 for solution developers. It's a session that I have evolved over the past year. My core demos have also evolved, and I'm pleased with the impact they make.   Re-Sharper is an excellent aid to producing good code in either C# or VB.NET. Recently through using Resharper and StyleCop, I have found three area where ReSharper needs to be improved.   Consider I am going to write a simple file based logger AppLogger to be used in my apps, ideally it should be a singleton so I can call it via public class AppLogger { public static String file = ".."; public void logToFile() { // Write to file } public static log(String s) { AppLogger.getInstance().logToFile(s); } } And to use it AppLogger::log("This is a log statement"); The problem is, what is the best time I should provide the value of file since it is a just a singleton? Or how to refactor the above code (or skip using singleton) so I can customize the log file path? (Assume I don't need to write to multiple at the same time) p.s. I know I can use library e.g. log4j, but consider it is just a design question, how to refactor the code above?

  I know in advance that people are going to see this question and think "free Red Bull." But I am actually looking for the best way to tie rewards for developers to the company's long-term goals. For example, assuming a team is working on the same software product, would it be best to reward each developer based on the condition of the final product? They are a team after all, and this will ensure that they are all working towards the common goal of getting the product out. However, this ignores the fact that some developers are stronger than others and some work harder than others. In your experience, what is the best way to incentivize a team of developers?

• Prediction happening on (sending) client side

  This seems like a simple enough concept, but I haven't seen this implemented anywhere yet. Assuming that the server just forwards and verifies data... I'm using mouse-based movement, so it's not too difficult to predict the location of the player 150ms from when the event is sent. I'm thinking it is more accurate than using old data and older data on the receiving clients' side. The question I have, is why can I not find any examples of this? Is there something fundamentally wrong with this that I cannot find anyone implementing or talking about implementing this.

• From Java to Javascript? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Are there any OO-principles that are practically applicable for Javascript? 2 answers I am primarily a Java programmer. Because of its OO principles and the general paradigm of Java programming, like wrapping things in static variables, and having things return specific types, heavily aids me in "visualizing" a program. Instead of thinking of a big program, I can, instead, focus on smaller organized parts of my eventual program, and add functionality and build up from there. Thus, I have trouble programming in other languages. Or at least, I have not been able to program in the same ability as I do in Java compared to other languages. I know Javascript has OO principles, so I'd like to learn this language in a OO-based like I would program with Java. Is this possible?

  What is the most appropriate diagram for GUI button design? Specifically, I have numerous buttons that will be changing color based on state information from operator input and input from various subcomponents and sensors. I would like to use UML or some other type of design diagrams to be able to capture the color transition. Some folks have suggested sequence diagrams, but I haven't been able to find any good examples that show how to incorporate this design artifact. • Finding out which tile a mouse click landed in

  I am working on an icometric grid based game and im having an issue trying to link a mouse click from the user to a tile. I have been able to split the problem into 2 parts which is first finding a rectangle that sourounds a tile, which I have been able to do but the second part of figuring out from the rectangle which tile the click landed in has got me stumped. Here is an example of a rectangle with tiles on the inside: The rectangle is 70px long and 30px high so if i use an input of say 30x(top)/20y(left) how would I go about determining which tile this fell into?

• Can I install Ubuntu 12.04 on MacBook 6.1 (Late 2009) on my external hard drive?

  I have no experience in installing Linux based OS on MacBook, but I already have Windows installed on my Mac. I read some articles saying I can have the Lucid Lynx installed in my Macbook 6.1 and luckily I already got the CD (which was distributed for free back then haha), my question is that can I have the 12.04 installed instead of the 10.04 and what do I need to do that? I also would like to know can I install it on my external hard drive just like installing it on a usb stick? I have viewed the how-to for installing the Lucid Lynx, is it just the same? • Upstart Script: Detect Shift Key Down At Boot

  I want to create a boot up potential which allows a different upstart/runlevel configurations to load based upon specific key downs at boot (or combos). How do I detect a key down event with an upstart script? I'm offering a bounty. The deal is you must provide a very simple piece of working code to do this. I will immediately check the code and verify that it works. I'm on 10.04 if that helps. Alternative methods to achieve the same result are acceptable, i.e., if grub could somehow show entries that would indicate a type of boot, where that boot would cp appropriate files to /etc/init. So, instead of a keydown solution, it would be a boot menu item solution and the way to get grub to copy upstart scripts to /etc/init. If possible.

  I run a fishkeeping website based on a WordPress (PHP) CMS. I've recently put a fairly complex "filter" into place which searches my content for mentions of fish species profiles and turns them into an active link. For example, asdasd this is a test about abdomen to see if the caudal fin will work asdadasdas try again with abdomen and A. panduro and Apistogramma panduro ...becomes asdasd this is a test about abdomen to see if the caudal fin will work asdadasdas try again with abdomen and <a href="/?p=1703" class="link_species">A. panduro</a> and <a href="/?p=1703" class="link_species">Apistogramma panduro</a> On the rest of my website, the species are linked with pretty URLs such as /species/apistogramma-panduro/ but due to the way this filter works, the only information I can get access to is the idof the post. As such, I'm using /?p=1703 or whatever the ID is. What I'd like to know is: how much will this affect my SEO rating/ranking? Will it be detrimental if I don't rewrite the function?
