• Minimum brightness level is brighter than the levels just above it

  I'm using a macbook pro 8,1. When I use the brightness keys on the keyboard, decreasing the brightness works until it reaches the lowest brightness level. At that point (when on the lowest level), the brightness is something like 70 or 80% instead of 0-10% (or whatever it usually is). All the other levels are fine. How can I adjust/calibrate these brightness controls? PS: I'm currently using 12.04 but I've had the same issue no later than 11.10 (and I'm fairly confident it was present in 11.04 as well). UPDATE: If I go to System Settings and select "Brightness and Lock" the exact same thing happens, but there is more fine grained control of the brightness. It goes to completely black when the dial is about 10% from the left edge. When it passes that point, anywhere inside that left 10% appears to be about 70 - 80% brightness (there's no change regardless of where the dial is in this section).

• How to create a 3D world with 2D sprites similar to Ragnorak online?

  As far as I know Ragnorak Online is a 3D game world with 2D sprites overlayed. I would like to use this style in a game I am making in Unity, so I would like the player to be able to select little square tiles on the terrain. There are a couple routes I could take such as using a bunch of cubic polygons and linking them together or using one big map. The former approach doesn't seem to make any sense if the world is not flat as polygons wouldn't be reused often. The goal is to break down a 3D polygon into tiles which is heard to wrap my head around. I believe using something like an interval tree or array would be appropriate to store the rectangle grid, but how would I display a rectangle around the selection the player has his mouse over on the polygon terrain itself?   I'm not able to make mic work with wine 1.5 I found some suggestions but they don't seem to work: -Disable winepulse.drv (aka: PulseAudio): "A1: Go to winecfg, in the tab 'libraries', enter 'winepulse.drv' in the box and click on add, click yes on the warning. Select winepulse.drv and change load order to 'disabled'. Now try to trigger your bug again, if it was a winepulse bug it shouldn't trigger any more. • Building a plug-in for Windows Live Writer

  This tutorial will show you how to build a plug-in for Windows Live Writer. Windows Live Writer is a blogging tool that Microsoft provides for free. It includes an open API for .NET developers to create custom plug-ins. In this tutorial, I will show you how easy it is to build one. Open VS2008 or VS2010 and create a new project. Set the target framework to 2.0, Application Type to Class Library and give it a name. In this tutorial, we are going to create a plug-in that generates a twitter message with your blog post name and a TinyUrl link to the blog post.  It will do all of this automatically after you publish your post. Once, we have a new projected created. We need to setup the references. Add a reference to the WindowsLive.Writer.Api.dll located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\ folder, if you are using X64 version of Windows. You will also need to add a reference to System.Windows.Forms System.Web from the .NET tab as well. Once that is complete, add your “using” statements so that it looks like whats shown below: Live Writer Plug-In "Using" using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using WindowsLive.Writer.Api; using System.Web; Now, we are going to setup some build events to make it easier to test our custom class.   I am developing an app in ddd maner. So I have a complex domain model. Suppose I have a Fare object and Airline. Each Airline should contain several or much more Fares. My UI should represent Model (only small part of complex model) as a list of Airline, when the user select the Airline, I must show the list of Fares. User can filtering the Fares (by travel time, cost, etc.). What is the appropriate place for filtering Fares and Airlines? I am assuming that I should do it in ViewModel. Like: My domain model has wrapped with Service Layer - UI works with ViewModel - ViewModel obtain data from Service Layer filtering it and create DTO objects for UI. Or I'm wrong?

• Global menu not showing in Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity

  I am on Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity shell. I am not quite sure what happened, but today I noticed that the menubar (containing 'File, Edit, etc...') is not appearing on the panel as it used to (i.e. the global application menu), but on the application window under the title bar. The only application that still uses global menu is Chromium. Any ideas what settings may have changed? Also, when I right click on the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", System Settings opens, instead of the "Appearance" settings. Apparently, here is a related question, with no answer: Global menu and HUD suddenly broken EDIT: I noticed this behavior on three of my computers after an update (I do not remember exactly which packages were updated). Now when I try to run apt-get upgrade, I get: The following packages have been kept back: gnome-control-center gnome-control-center-data I guess something is going on with updates. Any info would be appreciated.

• Ubuntu 12.04 "Shutdown" or "Restart" logs out

  While logged in as a sudo user, click the right top power icon, then select and click "Shutdown" menu, it comes up with a dialog asking if I want to close all programs. The dialog has two options: restart or shutdown. Choose either one logs me out. Syslog has the following line about restart: WARNING: Unable to restart system: Authorization is required This happened after I installed NTP and some OpenStack packages while working in a prototype project. My Ubuntu's software is up to date as of this writing. Anyone encountered the same problem in 12.04?

• SQL ADO.NET shortcut extensions (old school!)

  As much as I love me some ORM's (I've used LINQ to SQL quite a bit, and for the MSDN/TechNet Profile and Forums we're using NHibernate more and more), there are times when it's appropriate, and in some ways more simple, to just throw up so old school ADO.NET connections, commands, readers and such. It still feels like a pain though to new up all the stuff, make sure it's closed, blah blah blah. It's pretty much the least favorite task of writing data access code. To minimize the pain, I have a set of extension methods that I like to use that drastically reduce the code you have to write. The bottom line here is that you can chain together a bunch of these methods to make a much more concise database call, in terms of the code on your screen, anyway. You might have an even cleaner way to take that step out entirely. This looks more fluent, and the real magic sauce for me is the reader bits where you can put any kind of arbitrary method in there to iterate over the results.

• How to fix? Gnome-shell shows up and instantly stop working

  I am using ubuntu 12.04, but I love gnome shell, but not the Gnome Classic which comes installed. When I reinstalled, I instantly installed Gnome-shell by terminal using Unity, it worked for a while and then I started installing some extensions. I rebooted and it just stopped working, it shows up for a second, then I can only see my desktop with icons but without panels and I can't even use the terminal (CTRL + ALT + T) since the window doesn't really select when I click it. How could I fix this? I tried reinstalling Gnome-shell and all the stuff I installed for it, but now it doesn't work even without any extension.

  I've installed Virtual Box and am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 from a downloaded ISO. Everything is going fine but I come to a choice that says no operating system is dectected on this machine, what would you like to do? 1)Erase disk and install Ubuntu (this will erase any files on the disk) or 2) Something else (choose partition size, multiple partitions, etc). Does the first option mean erase all files on the VIRTUAL DISK--NOT THE COMPUTER? Is it just talking about the virtual machine or if I select this option will it erase my Windows operating system and other files on my hard drive?

  I'm trying to install UNetbootin on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I downloaded the executable file from this link and followed the instructions below: If using Linux, make the file executable (using either the command chmod +x ./unetbootin-linux, or going to Properties-Permissions and checking "Execute"), then start the application, you will be prompted for your password to grant the application administrative rights, then the main dialog will appear, where you select a distribution and install target (USB Drive or Hard Disk), then reboot when prompted.\ So I typed on my terminal sudo chmod +x unetbootin-linux-584 and tried to execute the binary file with ./unetbootin-linux-584 but got this output: ./unetbootin-linux-584: error while loading shared libraries: libXrandr.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory However when I checked for libraries libXrandr on my system I actually found them $> locate libXrandr /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr.so.2 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr.so.2.2.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr_ltsq.so.2 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr_ltsq.so.2.2.0 so I really don't have a clue of what's the problem and how can I fix it, any ideas?

• Windows Phone 7 dev: C# or silverlight for a simple app?

  I'm about to hire a programmer to develop Windows Phone 7 apps. The current app that shall be developed is quite simple. The app will download content from a Web-API. There are two lists to select content. There is a single item content page. Users can rate the content and upload photos. The screens will be produced by our artist. I am pretty sure that most of the available programmers haven't touched WP7 development yet. Now the questions are: What technology is suitable for this kind of app? What technology requires less research, learning and production time? Do you already have experience of limitations of silverlight compared to C#? (I am also thinking of future projects) My guess is that silverlight programmers are more experienced in UI programming than C# coders. Do you feel the same way?

• structure problem in Relational DBMS creation

  For learning and understanding purpose, I currently want to try to make a small relational DBMS with simple features like (for now) only sequential reading/writing and CREATE TABLE, INSERT, SELECT, UPDATE and DELETE management. I am currently on the "think" part of the project and I am stuck on the way to store the read data in memory. First I was thinking of putting them properly on a structure, but the problem is that tables are all different, know the type of each column is not an issue, but I am not sure C provide a way to make fully dynamic structure. My second and current idea is to make a simple char array of the required length and just get the data by order with cast. But I am not sure if it is the good way to do that part, so I wanted to ask for your opinion and advices about that.   Jumping to a specific page in Word is a common task and easy to do using the Find and Replace dialog box. You can also use this same tab to jump from one table directly to the next table in your document. Your cursor does not have to be in a table to jump to the next table. Put the cursor in any paragraph or table and press F5 or use the Ctrl + G keystroke combination to open the Find and Replace dialog box. The Go To tab is automatically selected. Select Table from the Go to what list and click Next. The next table in your document is selected and the Find and Replace dialog box stays open.

• What is the most reliable WiFi card?

  Which WiFi card is most reliable with Ubuntu, in particular V12.04? I have a ASUS PCE-N15 card which is dropping out intermittently. It has the RTL8188CE chipset, and I see that plenty of others have had a problem with this same chipset. I have tried building the custom drivers and a few other fixes, but still not reliable. So, I need to race out another card ASAP, but which card to buy? (I don't just want to select from the Ubuntu components list, since it is not infallible. For example, it says the RTL8188CE chips set works). Thanks!

• Music player that remembers last song and playlist

  I am looking for something similar to winamp. I have seen other threads but I have tried some solutions and they did not work. I tried Banshee that comes with Ubuntu 11.10 but it does not open last song. I tried Rhythmbox with the remember last song plugin however it does not remember the playlist I got the song from so it would start shuffling all my music. I tried Amarok and it does the same thing as Banshee except cannot even play my playlist and starts playing all my music. I tried audacious but importing my playlist .m3u doesnt allow me to select the individual playlists and play them. I just moved from Windows using winamp and would like a music player that can open playlists .m3u and when I open the application later that it opens the last song and playlist and I can press the play hotkey and music will start playing on startup similar to winamp. I do not care about any additional functionality or user interface.

  I am building a Web UI for a device for internet connection and one of the requirements in it is a speed test. I know the basic concept of how speed test works. A file is downloaded for a limited time then the same file is uploaded again and the speed is tracked at regular intervals. Downloading the file is not an issue, but how am I supposed to upload the file without the client knowing that the file is getting uploaded? I've read through a lot of documentation, but I'm still not able to get the answer to how I will upload the file from clients machine without asking him to select the file.

• OUD as a OAM Identity Store

  Since 11gR2, OUD can be used natively as a OAM Identity Store. Select  "OUD: Oracle Unified Directory" as Store Type as described here. As an alternate solution, you can also configure OVD as Identity Store with OAM and then configure LDAP adapter for OVD with OUD details.Configuring Identity store for OAM is documented here. Choose "OVD: Oracle Virtual Directory" as store type and provide store details as per the document. Configuring LDAP adapter for OVD is documented here. • When should I use AtomPub?

  I have been conducting some research into RESTful web service design and I've reached what I think is a key decision point so I thought I'd offer it up to the community to get some advice. In keeping with the principles of a RESTful architecture I want to present a discoverable API, so I will be supporting the various HTTP verbs as fully as possible. My difficulty comes with the choice of representation of those resources. You see, it would be easy for me to come up with my own API that covers how search results are to be presented and how links to other resources are provided, but this would be unique to my application. I've read about the Atom Publishing Protocol (RFC 5023), and how OData promotes its use, but it seems to add an extra level of abstraction over what is (currently) a rather simple API. So my question is, when should a developer select AtomPub as their choice of representation - if at all? And if not, what is the current recommended approach?
