• Forcing a mixed ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8 multi-line string into UTF-8

  Consider the following problem: A multi-line string $junk contains some lines which are encoded in UTF-8 and some in ISO-8859-1. I don't know a priori which lines are in which encoding, so heuristics will be needed. I want to turn $junk into pure UTF-8 with proper re-encoding of the ISO-8859-1 lines. Also, in the event of errors in the processing I want to provide a "best effort result" rather than throwing an error. My current attempt looks like this: $junk = &force_utf8($junk); sub force_utf8 { my $input = shift; my $output = ''; foreach my $line (split(/\n/, $input)) { if (utf8::valid($line)) { utf8::decode($line); } $output .= "$line\n"; } return $output; } While this appears to work I'm certain this is not the optimal solution.   I have a username textbox on a form, that has a few validation rules applied to it via the DataAnnotation attributes: [Required(ErrorMessage = "FTP login is required")] [StringLength(15, ErrorMessage = "Must be 15 characters or fewer")] [RegularExpression(@"[a-zA-Z0-9]*", ErrorMessage = "Alpha-numeric characters only")] public string FtpLogin { get; set; } I also have a button next to this text box, that fires off a jQuery ajax request that checks for the existence of the username as follows: <button onclick="check(this);return false;" id="FtpLoginCheck" name="FtpLoginCheck">Available?</button> I'm looking for a way of tieing the two together, so that the client-side validation is performed before the call to the "check(this)" in the onclick event. Edit: To be more clear, I need a way to inspect or trigger the client-side validation result of the textbox, when I click the unrelated button beside it. Edit: I now have the button JS checking for $("form").validate().invalid, but not displaying the usual validation messages. Almost there Any ideas?

  I have been looking for a C# tree control for displaying a file system that has the following capabilities: Select a starting directory. I don't always want to start at a "default" top directory level. The ability to grab an event when the user double clicks on a file in the tree. I want to handle opening the file within my application. I have been looking at this C# File Browser. Unfortunately, I have not been able to figure out how to do meet my second need. (If anybody can clear that up for me, I would like that even better.) Thanks for any help.

• Breakpoints not working in Delphi 6 DirectShow source filter

  I'm trying to debug my DirectShow source filter. I'm using Delphi Pro 6 on Windows XP along with the DSPACK component library. I'm using Skype as my host application, which I set in the Parameters option in the Run menu, for testing my source filter DLL (ax file extension). Skype runs fine and I see a stream of my OutputDebugString messages in the Event Viewer, but none of my breakpoints are ever hit. In my Project Settings I have optimizations off, stack frames on, debug DCUs on, Range Checking on, and Overflow checking on. Each time I modify my code and run a test I: Do a full build Unregister the DirectShow filter (regsvr32 /u) Register the DirectShow filter (regsvr32) Run Skype as my Host application from the IDE When an Exception occurs, the IDE does trap it and pops up an error dialog box with the option to view the assembler code in the CPU window. However none of my breakpoints are being hit. Can anyone tell me how to get breakpoints working? Thanks.

• Setting winforms ToolStripMenuItem ShortcutKeys to numpad key does not work

  We have the ability to define ShortcutKeys for WinForms application menu items. That way I can tell a menu item File-Save to have a shortcut key Ctrl+S and the menu item's handler is "magically" executed after pressing Ctrl+S. The trouble is with the numeric keypad keys, the ShortcutKey property does not accept them (I don't understand how are they different from the other acceptable keys. MSDN states that the property accepts type System.Windows.Forms.Keys (One of the Keys values. The default is None.); and an InvalidEnumArgumentException would be thrown when the parameter is not one of Keys values. But for example Keys.Divide IS one of Keys values, and yet it can't be used. So how can I set a menu item to have a shortcut for Numpad * or Numpad +? Do I need to handle the key in Form's ProcessCmdKey event? Thanks

  Hello, I have a message box pop up when a certain operation is being executed sort of "wait..." window and I want to have a "loading" *.gif animation there to lighten up the mood :) Anyways I can't seem to figure out how to make this work. It's a complete mess.   I am working with Infragistics35.WebUI.WebSchedule.v8.2. I am not seeing any good documentation on this on the Infragistics Web site. Does anyone have any sample code I could see? I am trying to create a week view of the calendar. One that "Admins" can edit and the rest of the users can only view. I would love to have a different dblclick event fire based on role, so that a read only version of the activity would show for non admins. Is that possible? I'm just using an access db on the site in the App_Data directory. I really just needed (I thought) an out of the box solution. Cheers.

  Dear stackoverflow experts, I have a little script which allows me to use jQuery to sort div tags nicely between 3 columns. The jQuery can be seen below: $(".column").sortable( { connectWith: '.column' }, { update: function(event, ui) { alert($(this).sortable('serialize')) } }); If I move an item from column 1 to column 2, it will display 2 alerts, showing the serialized data for the 2 affected columns. The problem is, I need to know the column ids too, so I can eventually save the data into a database. Right now, if it is possible to just display the column id in an alert but, that will be enough for me to continue. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  Hi, Can I rerender a jsf ui component when a valuechangelistener method is run? The reason i'm asking is that my valuechangelistener method changes the values of the input boxes but when I run it, they don't seem to be rerender. The following doesn't work: <h:inputText id="inputbox_id"/> <h:selectOneMenu valueChangeListener="#{myBean.changeCountryMenu}"> <a4j:support event="onchange" rerender="inputbox_id" action="#{bean.test}> </h:selectOneMenu> Notice that bean.test() is never run. So the solution I thought of is to rerender the inputbox from the valueChangeListener. If there is some other better solution i'd be glad to hear... Thank you! Ben.

• Relative Resizing of Forms in C#

  What is the magic that makes components cling to the edges of a form? I had thought that one must use the resize event of the form and them force each element in the form to resize. But then I saw some sample code which, even when I am editing the form, the elements seem to adhere to a percentage of the space they take up in the form rather than a set diminsion. In other words, when I am editing the form and resizing it, the panels and the parts inside the form bend their shape such that the edges remain a few pixels from the edges. But in my own program I have not been able to find where I can duplicate this feature. • MVC.NET project won't start under IIS 5.1 on Windows XP SP3

  I've a MVC.NET 2 project that runs fine under Windows 7 and will start on Windows XP if I use the Visual Studio Development Server, however, starting under IIS generates an error: Unable to start debugging on the web server With the message The specified procedure could not be found No errors in the system event viewer. If I start without debugging I get an "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error" The reason I run it under IIS is the project also includes some WCF wsHttp web services that use certificates, so the VS Development Server is not adequate for hosting those. I have already seen the links on SO that talk about adding the wildcard mapping. I've already done that, just as I've done on Windows Server 2003 where I successfully host MVC.NET RC2 for quite a while.

• ItemsControl.ItemsSource MVVM perormance

  I have an (non-virtualized) ItemsControl that binds its ItemsSource to a ObeservableCollection of ViewModel instances. Now once the large amount Model instances is loaded all the ViewModel complemnents needs to be added to that ObservableCollection. How can I add a large amount of ViewModels without making the UI Thread hang? I suppose the UI Thread hangs because each time a new item is added the ItemsControl needs to update itself and does layout etc. over and over again. Should I suspend the binding add all items and then resume? If so, how? Should I override the ObservableCollection to implement an AddRange so only 1 CollectionChanged Event is fired for adding multiple items? Or alternatively just replace the whole collection? Or is it better to add each items separately and call Dispatcher.Invoke for each item separately? So I would unblock frequently. How do you handle large dynamic lists that can not be virtualized?

• TypeLoadException says 'no implementation', but it is implemented

  (I spent a few hours yesterday fighting with this problem, couldn't find any solutions here or anywhere else, so I'm adding this here for anyone else who has this problem.) I've got a very weird bug on our test machine. The error is: System.TypeLoadException: Method 'SetShort' in type 'DummyItem' from assembly 'ActiveViewers (...)' does not have an implementation. I just can't understand why - I'm looking at my code, SetShort is there in the DummyItem class, and I've even recompiled a version with writes to the event log just to make sure that it's not a deployment/versioning issue. The weird thing is that the calling code doesn't even call the SetShort method...

• 301 htaccess redirect: add segment to old URL's

  I'm trying to make sure old url's aren't broken after the site's URL structure has changed from this: http://www.domain.com/section/entry_name to this: http://www.domain.com/section/event_name/entry_name But to make it a bit more complex, I'm using the segments to sort entries, for example: http://www.domain.com/news/amazing_event/date/asc http://www.domain.com/videos/my_event/title/desc The new structure only effects one particular event (amazing_event) and should leave the other URL's alone. Where do I even begin to tackle this?   IBM has (had) a free learn-Java program called RoboCode, in which custom robots could be written that would then do battle in a 2D space. I would like to write the environment that supports such robots, but don't know what pattern or design to use. Each robot is a thread. Each thread is given a certain (indeterminate) amount of run-time by the JRE. A robot world engine would start by building a list of the players/robots, then enter a loop that allows each player in turn to do whatever it likes: move forward, turn left, fire toward the northwest corner, whatever. Each robot is also informed of events of interest: an enemy or several enemies are within range, it has been hit by a bullet, etc. The combination of handling threads that are also event listeners (are they also producers?) confuses me; it seems that there's more to the game engine. Even some general ideas would help. TIA.
