It takes a lot of time and memorization effort to learn the different commands and various options/switches om the command line version. So I have a couple of questions (which are not necessarily mutually exclusive): 1) When would you bother learning/memorizing the commands in the command line version of a tool which also comes in a gui version ? 2) What tools should I learn the command line version of ? .... compilers ? version control system ? etc, etc

What if the focus of the webmaster/client is 100% set on the quality of the content with precise keywords in meta tags, clean design, regular articles updates, clean URLs and highly filtered external links leading to pages on websites dealing on the same,or related subjects; isn't it the job of a good search engine like Google to catch this website and show it in its front-page ? Or does Search Engines count on us to help them find us, and webmasters will always have to be up-to-date regarding SEO tools and rules updates on top of websites' design, browsers customization, progressive enhancement etc ?

  I'm just about to start a new business which creates niche affiliate sites. I'm curious about the impacts to me from Google of all the urls being hosted with the same analytic tags, webmaster tool tags and server ip ranges. To benefit the most from google's serps should i have each domain within seperate analytic accounts and webmaster tools or is it ok for me to have all of my domains within one account. My issue is duplicate content and the fact that i am building a publisher network and i'm not sure how much google likes them. I'm notoriously bad at searching and as such havent found what i'm looking for yet. Any help would be very much appreciated.

  Background: I have extensive development background, but the last time I coded a game was many years ago. My Javascript skills are quite limited, and I intend to improve them by building a simple game — Tetris, Pac-man, or something of that complexity level. Question: It seems to me that a fundamental choice I need to make is whether I should render on a <canvas> element or not. With a canvas, I have basic tools for rendering points, lines, and more complex things on top of that. Presumably there are, or will be, also various frameworks to help with this. Without a canvas, I could keep my objects in the DOM-tree, like a regular webpage, only quite complex, with many overlapping elements. Is one approach better than the other? Are they mutually exclusive? How do I know which to pick?

  XRegExp is an open source JavaScript library. It extends JavaScript’s regex syntax with features such as free-spacing, named capture, mode modifiers, and Unicode categories, blocks, and scripts. It also provides its own test(), exec(), forEach(), replace(), and split() methods that eliminate most cross-browser inconstencies and bugs. Anyone using non-trivial regexes in their JavaScript code should seriously consider using XRegExp. Last month’s update of the Regular-Expressions.info website added full coverage of XRegExp to the regex tutorial and regex reference sections.   I started seriously programming as a hobbiest, student and then intern about 4 years ago and I've always done small projects on the side as a learning exercise. Schools over now though, and I spend my days at work as a software developer. I would still love to do projects on the side to learn about areas in computer science that I'm not exposed to at work, but I've noticed that after 8 hours of starring at an IDE it's far to tempting to veg out. Any time I do get up the gumption to work on something for a few hours lately it's gotten left by the wayside. Anyone have any advice for sticking with side projects when you spend most of your day coding?

Obviously some tools or languages are better for this than others - no-one (in their right mind) is doing a one off job of cross referencing a bunch of text lists their PM has just given them in assembler for instance. What one tool or language would you recommend for the sort of general quick and dirty jobs you get asked to do where time (rather than elegance) is of the essence? Background: I'm a former programmer, now development manager PM, looking to learn a new language for fun. If I'm going to learn something for fun I'd like it to be useful and this sort of use case is the most likely to come up.

  Should you demand twice as much money if the job's asking for two different sets of skills such as graphic design and computer programming? Sure you won't be doing 16 hours of work a day, but we all know that so much of the time is spent on communication between designers and developers, and if the designer and the developer is the same person, it would take way less time, and hence I think the pay should be doubled. If not double, how much more should you ask for? How much are employers usually willing to pay for such a polymath position? If you are hiring, would you prefer one polymath person or two specialists at the same cost?

  I did a small coding mistake and google indexed my site wrongly. this is correct form: https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/TENGA-CUP-DOUBLE-HOLE but google index my site like this : https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx first I fixed the problem and made a site map and only correct link in it. now I checked webmaster tools and I see this; Total indexed 513 Not selected 544 Blocked by robots 0 so I think this can be caused by double indexes and they looks not selected makes my data not selected. I want to know how to fix this "https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx" links. should I fix in code or should I connect to google to reindex my site. If I should redirect wrong/duplicate links to correct ones, what the way should be? thanks for your time in advance.

  Have you ever wanted to connect to the “Windows Internal” database that WSS V3 uses? While “Windows Internal Database” is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 in a limited edition (just like MSDE, WMSDE before it), the familiar access tools to the DB went missing, and connecting using standard ways doesn’t work either. It doesn’t work right out of the box. First, you need SQL Management Studio Express. Install and start it. Specify the following connection string: \\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##ssee\sql\query Please note that, as implied by the connection string, this connection only works locally. • What options are there for splitting UI layout from code logic using a markup language?

  What tools similar to GWT's UIBinder exist in other languages? By this I mean a system where you can define your UI layout in a markup language (preferably html+css) and attach the functionality to the layout using the code. I'm most interested in anything for python, but answers in other languages would interest me as well. I'm interested because the benefits of having a non-programmer work directly on the layout without needing to touch the code and adjust a bunch of UI toolkit method calls is very productive. I'm aware of Flex for flash, but is there anything else out there? What search terms might I use to find such frameworks? I've looked around but I haven't found anything concrete.

• Automatic language transformation in editor or IDE [on hold]

  Are there any tools that are capable of editing code but in different language? To be more concrete, I want to parse java source file in editor, compile it to my language X, edit in X and compile back to java on save. Or edit pom.xml file using non-XML syntax. Which editor or IDE would be easiest to use for implementing such prototype? Option to transform only a snippet would be ideal to limit effort on parsing. For one example, Intellij IDEA can display anonymous class so it looks like lambda expression hiding some of boilerplate.

• How Visual Studio could help to avoid duplicating code?

  I work within a team of developers. Everyone is making their changes without carrying too much if the same thing is already implemented in the codebase. This leads to classes constantly growing and to severe duplication. I want to add line items to class definitions from which a developer could judge what this class has. Would it help? How to do it in Visual Studio? If it wouldn't help, what would be the better alternative to encourage the developers to check if something exists before implementing it?
