• OWB 11gR2 - Early Arriving Facts

  A common challenge when building ETL components for a data warehouse is how to handle early arriving facts. OWB 11gR2 introduced a new feature to address this for dimensional objects entitled Orphan Management. An orphan record is one that does not have a corresponding existing parent record. Orphan management automates the process of handling source rows that do not meet the requirements necessary to form a valid dimension or cube record. In this article, a simple example will be provided to show you how to use Orphan Management in OWB. We first import a sample MDL file that contains all the objects we need. Then we take some time to examine all the objects. After that, we prepare the source data, deploy the target table and dimension/cube loading map. Finally, we run the loading maps, and check the data in target dimension/cube tables. OK, let’s start… 1. Import MDL file and examine sample project First, download zip file from here, which includes a MDL file and three source data files. Then we open OWB design center, import orphan_management.mdl by using the menu File->Import->Warehouse Builder Metadata. Now we have several objects in BI_DEMO project as below: Mapping LOAD_CHANNELS_OM: The mapping for dimension loading. Mapping LOAD_SALES_OM: The mapping for cube loading. Dimension CHANNELS_OM: The dimension that contains channels data. Cube SALES_OM: The cube that contains sales data. Table CHANNELS_OM: The star implementation table of dimension CHANNELS_OM. Table SALES_OM: The star implementation table of cube SALES_OM. Table SRC_CHANNELS: The source table of channels data, that will be loaded into dimension CHANNELS_OM. Table SRC_ORDERS and SRC_ORDER_ITEMS: The source tables of sales data that will be loaded into cube SALES_OM. Sequence CLASS_OM_DIM_SEQ: The sequence used for loading dimension CHANNELS_OM. Dimension CHANNELS_OM This dimension has a hierarchy with three levels: TOTAL, CLASS and CHANNEL. Each level has three attributes: ID (surrogate key), NAME and SOURCE_ID (business key). It has a standard star implementation. The orphan management policy and the default parent setting are shown in the following screenshots: The orphan management policy options that you can set for loading are: Reject Orphan: The record is not inserted. Default Parent: You can specify a default parent record. This default record is used as the parent record for any record that does not have an existing parent record. If the default parent record does not exist, Warehouse Builder creates the default parent record. You specify the attribute values of the default parent record at the time of defining the dimensional object. If any ancestor of the default parent does not exist, Warehouse Builder also creates this record. No Maintenance: This is the default behavior. Warehouse Builder does not actively detect, reject, or fix orphan records. While removing data from a dimension, you can select one of the following orphan management policies: Reject Removal: Warehouse Builder does not allow you to delete the record if it has existing child records. No Maintenance: This is the default behavior. Warehouse Builder does not actively detect, reject, or fix orphan records. It has three measures: AMOUNT, QUANTITY and COST. The orphan management policy setting are shown as following screenshot: The orphan management policy options that you can set for loading are: No Maintenance: Warehouse Builder does not actively detect, reject, or fix orphan rows. Default Dimension Record: Warehouse Builder assigns a default dimension record for any row that has an invalid or null dimension key value. Use the Settings button to define the default parent row. Reject Orphan: Warehouse Builder does not insert the row if it does not have an existing dimension record. (More details are at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/owb.112/e10935/dim_objects.htm#BABEACDG) Mapping LOAD_CHANNELS_OM This mapping loads source data from table SRC_CHANNELS to dimension CHANNELS_OM. The operator CHANNELS_IN is bound to table SRC_CHANNELS; CHANNELS_OUT is bound to dimension CHANNELS_OM. The TOTALS operator is used for generating a constant value for the top level in the dimension. The CLASS_FILTER operator is used to filter out the “invalid” class name, so then we can see what will happen when those channel records with an “invalid” parent are loading into dimension. Some properties of the dimension operator in this mapping are important to orphan management. See the screenshot below: Create Default Level Records: If YES, then default level records will be created. This property must be set to YES for dimensions and cubes if one of their orphan management policies is “Default Parent” or “Default Dimension Record”. This property is set to NO by default, so the user may need to set this to YES manually. LOAD policy for INVALID keys/ LOAD policy for NULL keys: These two properties have the same meaning as in the dimension editor. The values are set to the same as the dimension value when user drops the dimension into the mapping. The user does not need to modify these properties. Record Error Rows: If YES, error rows will be inserted into error table when loading the dimension. REMOVE Orphan Policy: This property is used when removing data from a dimension. Since the dimension loading type is set to LOAD in this example, this property is disabled. Mapping LOAD_SALES_OM This mapping loads source data from table SRC_ORDERS and SRC_ORDER_ITEMS to cube SALES_OM. This mapping seems a little bit complicated, but operators in the red rectangle are used to filter out and generate the records with “invalid” or “null” dimension keys. Some properties of the cube operator in a mapping are important to orphan management. See the screenshot below: Enable Source Aggregation: Should be checked in this example. If the default dimension record orphan policy is set for the cube operator, then it is recommended that source aggregation also be enabled. Otherwise, the orphan management processing may produce multiple fact rows with the same default dimension references, which will cause an “unstable rowset” execution error in the database, since the dimension refs are used as update match attributes for updating the fact table. LOAD policy for INVALID keys/ LOAD policy for NULL keys: These two properties have the same meaning as in the cube editor. The values are set to the same as in the cube editor when the user drops the cube into the mapping. The user does not need to modify these properties. Record Error Rows: If YES, error rows will be inserted into error table when loading the cube. 2. Deploy objects and mappings We now can deploy the objects. First, make sure location SALES_WH_LOCAL has been correctly configured. Then open Control Center Manager by using the menu Tools->Control Center Manager. Expand BI_DEMO->SALES_WH_LOCAL, click SALES_WH node on the project tree. We can see the following objects: Deploy all the objects in the following order: Sequence CLASS_OM_DIM_SEQ Table CHANNELS_OM, SALES_OM, SRC_CHANNELS, SRC_ORDERS, SRC_ORDER_ITEMS Dimension CHANNELS_OM Cube SALES_OM Mapping LOAD_CHANNELS_OM, LOAD_SALES_OM Note that we deployed source tables as well. Normally, we import source table from database instead of deploying them to target schema. However, in this example, we designed the source tables in OWB and deployed them to database for the purpose of this demonstration. 3. Prepare and examine source data Before running the mappings, we need to populate and examine the source data first. Run SRC_CHANNELS.sql, SRC_ORDERS.sql and SRC_ORDER_ITEMS.sql as target user. Then we check the data in these three tables. Table SRC_CHANNELS SQL> select rownum, id, class, name from src_channels; Records 1~5 are correct; they should be loaded into dimension without error. Records 6,7 and 8 have null parents; they should be loaded into dimension with a default parent value, and should be inserted into error table at the same time. Records 9, 10 and 11 have “invalid” parents; they should be rejected by dimension, and inserted into error table. Table SRC_ORDERS and SRC_ORDER_ITEMS SQL> select rownum, a.id, a.channel, b.amount, b.quantity, b.cost from src_orders a, src_order_items b where a.id = b.order_id; Record 178 has null dimension reference; it should be loaded into cube with a default dimension reference, and should be inserted into error table at the same time. Record 179 has “invalid” dimension reference; it should be rejected by cube, and inserted into error table. Other records should be aggregated and loaded into cube correctly. 4. Run the mappings and examine the target data In the Control Center Manager, expand BI_DEMO-> SALES_WH_LOCAL-> SALES_WH-> Mappings, right click on LOAD_CHANNELS_OM node, click Start. Use the same way to run mapping LOAD_SALES_OM. When they successfully finished, we can check the data in target tables. Table CHANNELS_OM SQL> select rownum, total_id, total_name, total_source_id, class_id,class_name, class_source_id, channel_id, channel_name,channel_source_id from channels_om order by abs(dimension_key); Records 1,2 and 3 are the default dimension records for the three levels. Records 8, 10 and 15 are the loaded records that originally have null parents. We see their parents name (class_name) is set to DEF_CLASS_NAME. Those records whose CHANNEL_NAME are Special_4, Special_5 and Special_6 are not loaded to this table because of the invalid parent. Error Table CHANNELS_OM_ERR SQL> select rownum, class_source_id, channel_id, channel_name,channel_source_id, err$$$_error_reason from channels_om_err order by channel_name; We can see all the record with null parent or invalid parent are inserted into this error table. Error reason is “Default parent used for record” for the first three records, and “No parent found for record” for the last three. Table SALES_OM SQL> select a.*, b.channel_name from sales_om a, channels_om b where a.channels=b.channel_id; We can see the order record with null channel_name has been loaded into target table with a default channel_name. The one with “invalid” channel_name are not loaded. Error Table SALES_OM_ERR SQL> select a.amount, a.cost, a.quantity, a.channels, b.channel_name, a.err$$$_error_reason from sales_om_err a, channels_om b where a.channels=b.channel_id(+); We can see the order records with null or invalid channel_name are inserted into error table. If the dimension reference column is null, the error reason is “Default dimension record used for fact”. If it is invalid, the error reason is “Dimension record not found for fact”. Summary In summary, this article illustrated the Orphan Management feature in OWB 11gR2. Automated orphan management policies improve ETL developer and administrator productivity by addressing an important cause of cube and dimension load failures, without requiring developers to explicitly build logic to handle these orphan rows.

• Dotfuscator Deep Dive with WP7

  I thought I would share some experience with code obfuscation (specifically the Dotfuscator product) and Windows Phone 7 apps. These days twitter is a buzz with black hat and white operations coming out about how the marketplace is insecure and Microsoft failed, blah, blah, blah. So it’s that much more important to protect your intellectual property. You should protect it no matter what when releasing apps into the wild but more so when someone is paying for them. You want to protect the time and effort that went into your code and have some comfort that the casual hacker isn’t going to usurp your next best thing. Enter code obfuscation. Code obfuscation is one tool that can help protect your IP. Basically it goes into your compiled assemblies, rewrites things at an IL level (like renaming methods and classes and hiding logic flow) and rewrites it back so that the assembly or executable is still fully functional but prying eyes using a tool like ILDASM or Reflector can’t see what’s going on.  You can read more about code obfuscation here on Wikipedia. A word to the wise. Code obfuscation isn’t 100% secure. More so on the WP7 platform where the OS expects certain things to be as they were meant to be. So don’t expect 100% obfuscation of every class and every method and every property. It’s just not going to happen. What this does do is give you some level of protection but don’t put all your eggs in one basket and call it done. Like I said, this is just one step in the process. There are a few tools out there that provide code obfuscation and support the Windows Phone 7 platform (see links to other tools at the end of this post). One such tool is Dotfuscator from PreEmptive solutions. The thing about Dotfuscator is that they’ve struck a deal with Microsoft to provide a *free* copy of their commercial product for Windows Phone 7. The only drawback is that it only runs until March 31, 2010. However it’s a good place to start and the focus of this article. Getting Started When you fire up Dotfuscator you’re presented with a dialog to start a new project or load a previous one. We’ll start with a new project. You’re then looking at a somewhat blank screen that shows an Input tab (among others) and you’re probably wondering what to do? Click on the folder icon (first one) and browse to where your xap file is. At this point you can save the project and click on the arrow to start the process. Bam! You’re done. Right? Think again. The program did indeed run and create a new version of your xap (doing it’s thing and rewriting back your *obfuscated* assemblies) but let’s take a look at the assembly in Reflector to see the end result. Remember a xap file is really just a glorified zip file (or cab file if you prefer). When you ran Dotfuscator for the first time with the default settings you’ll see it created a new version of your xap in a folder under “My Documents” called “Dotfuscated” (you can configure the output directory in settings). Here’s the new xap file. Since a xap is just a zip, rename it to .cab or .zip or something and open it with your favorite unarchive program (I use WinRar but it doesn’t matter as long as it can unzip files). If you already have the xap file associated with your unarchive tool the rename isn’t needed. Once renamed extract the contents of the xap to your hard drive: Now you’ll have a folder with the contents of the xap file extracted: Double click or load up your assembly (WindowsPhoneDataBoundApplication1.dll in the example) in Reflector and let’s see the results: Hmm. That doesn’t look right. I can see all the methods and the code is all there for my LoadData method I wanted to protect. Product failure. Let’s return it for a refund. Hold your horses. We need to check out the settings in the program first. Remember when we loaded up our xap file. It started us on the Input tab but there was a settings tab before that. Wonder what it does? Here’s the default settings: Renaming Taking a closer look, all of the settings in Feature are disabled. WTF? Yeah, it leaves me scratching my head why an obfuscator by default doesn’t obfuscate. However it’s a simple fix to change these settings. Let’s enable Renaming as it sounds like a good start. Renaming obscures code by renaming methods and fields to names that are not understandable. Great. Run the tool again and go through the process of unzipping the updated xap and let’s take a look in Reflector again at our project. This looks a lot better. Lots of methods named a, b, c, d, etc. That’ll help slow hackers down a bit. What about our logic that we spent days weeks on? Let’s take a look at the LoadData method: What gives? We have renaming enabled but all of our code is still there. If you look through all your methods you’ll find it’s still sitting there out in the open. Control Flow Back to the settings page again. Let’s enable Control Flow now. Control Flow obfuscation synthesizes branching, conditional, and iterative constructs (such as if, for, and while) that produce valid executable logic, but yield non-deterministic semantic results when decompilation is attempted. In other words, the code runs as before, but decompilers cannot reproduce the original code. Do the dance again and let’s see the results in Reflector. Ahh, that’s better. Methods renamed *and* nobody can look at our LoadData method now. Life is good. More than Minimum This is the bare minimum to obfuscate your xap to at least a somewhat comfortable level. However I did find that while this worked in my Hello World demo, it didn’t work on one of my real world apps. I had to do some extra tweaking with that. Below are the screens that I used on one app that worked. I’m not sure what it was about the app that the approach above didn’t work with (maybe the extra assembly?) but it works and I’m happy with it. YMMV. Remember to test your obfuscated app on your device first before submitting to ensure you haven’t obfuscated the obfuscator. settings tab: rename tab: string encryption tab: premark tab: A few final notes Play with the settings and keep bumping up the bar to try to get as much obfuscation as you can. The more the better but remember you can overdo it. Always (always, always, always) deploy your obfuscated xap to your device and test it before submitting to the marketplace. I didn’t and got rejected because I had gone overboard with the obfuscation so the app wouldn’t launch at all. Not everything is going to be obfuscated. Specifically I don’t see a way to obfuscate auto properties and a few other language features. Again, if you crank the settings up you might hide these but I haven’t spent a lot of time optimizing the process. Some people might say to obfuscate your xaml using string encryption but again, test, test, test. Xaml is picky so too much obfuscation (or any) might disable your app or produce odd rendering effets. Remember, obfuscation is not 100% secure! Don’t rely on it as a sole way of protecting your assets. Other Tools Dotfuscator is one just product and isn’t the end-all be-all to obfuscation so check out others below. For example, Crypto can make it so Reflector doesn’t even recognize the app as a .NET one and won’t open it. Others can encrypt resources and Xaml markup files. It is hard to believe that people actually want to read what I write. I feel like I owe a huge thanks to everyone listed below. Looking back upon 2010, I feel that I’ve grown as a developer and you are part of that reason. Sometimes we get caught up in day to day work and forget to give thanks to those that helped us along the way. The list below is mine, it includes people and companies. This list is obviously not going to include everyone that has helped, just those that have stood out in my mind. When I think back upon 2010, their names keep popping up in my head. Birmingham .NET Users Group / Silverlight Nights User Group – It takes a lot of time to put together a user group meeting every month yet it always seems to happen. I don’t want to name names for fear of leaving someone out but both of these User Groups are excellent if you live in the Birmingham, Alabama area. • Which SSL do I need?

  I need to buy a ssl certificate. Now there are so many different alternatives with a huge price range. I know the very basic differences of browser compatibility and security level. But I need a "cheap" ssl certificate. Now there are sites which are offering SSl for 7$/year. Would this do the job? Or would you recommend me to get something more expensive like this one? • Why is this rkhunter script sending empty emails?

  I have started running rkhunter (a security monitoring tool) and I have finally managed to clear all of its warnings. Now, a cron job runs every day to monitor my machine. Rather than send me an email of warnings, it sends me an email with no body - which I don't really want. Looking at the (unedited, straight out of the box) /etc/cron.daily/rkhunter script, it contains this snippet of shell code: if [ -s "$OUTFILE" ]; then ( echo "Subject: [rkhunter] $(hostname -f) - Daily report" echo "To: $REPORT_EMAIL" echo "" cat $OUTFILE ) | /usr/sbin/sendmail $REPORT_EMAIL fi The -s clause should prevent empty emails from being sent, right? Does anyone have an explanation why this would still send empty emails?

• An MCM exam, Rob? Really?

  I took the SQL 2008 MCM Knowledge exam while in Seattle for the PASS Summit ten days ago. I wasn’t planning to do it, but I got persuaded to try. I was meaning to write this post to explain myself before the result came out, but it seems I didn’t get typing quickly enough. Those of you who know me will know I’m a big fan of certification, to a point. I’ve been involved with Microsoft Learning to help create exams. I’ve kept my certifications current since I first took an exam back in 1998, sitting many in beta, across quite a variety of topics. I’ve probably become quite good at them – I know I’ve definitely passed some that I really should’ve failed. I’ve also written that I don’t think exams are worth studying for. (That’s probably not entirely true, but it depends on your motivation. If you’re doing learning, I would encourage you to focus on what you need to know to do your job better. That will help you pass an exam – but the two skills are very different. I can coach someone on how to pass an exam, but that’s a different kind of teaching when compared to coaching someone about how to do a job. For example, the real world includes a lot of “it depends”, where you develop a feel for what the influencing factors might be. In an exam, its better to be able to know some of the “Don’t use this technology if XYZ is true” concepts better.) As for the Microsoft Certified Master certification… I’m not opposed to the idea of having the MCM (or in the future, MCSM) cert. But the barrier to entry feels quite high for me. When it was first introduced, the nearest testing centres to me were in Kuala Lumpur and Manila. Now there’s one in Perth, but that’s still a big effort. I know there are options in the US – such as one about an hour’s drive away from downtown Seattle, but it all just seems too hard. Plus, these exams are more expensive, and all up – I wasn’t sure I wanted to try them, particularly with the fact that I don’t like to study. I used to study for exams. It would drive my wife crazy. I’d have some exam scheduled for some time in the future (like the time I had two booked for two consecutive days at TechEd Australia 2005), and I’d make sure I was ready. Every waking moment would be spent pouring over exam material, and it wasn’t healthy. I got shaken out of that, though, when I ended up taking four exams in those two days in 2005 and passed them all. I also worked out that if I had a Second Shot available, then failing wasn’t a bad thing at all. Even without Second Shot, I’m much more okay about failing. But even just trying an MCM exam is a big effort. I wouldn’t want to fail one of them. Plus there’s the illusion to maintain. People have told me for a long time that I should just take the MCM exams – that I’d pass no problem. I’ve never been so sure. It was almost becoming a pride-point. Perhaps I should fail just to demonstrate that I can fail these things. Anyway – boB Taylor (@sqlboBT) persuaded me to try the SQL 2008 MCM Knowledge exam at the PASS Summit. They set up a testing centre in one of the room there, so it wasn’t out of my way at all. I had to squeeze it in between other commitments, and I certainly didn’t have time to even see what was on the syllabus, let alone study. In fact, I was so exhausted from the week that I fell asleep at least once (just for a moment though) during the actual exam. Perhaps the questions need more jokes, I’m not sure. I knew if I failed, then I might disappoint some people, but that I wouldn’t’ve spent a great deal of effort in trying to pass. On the other hand, if I did pass I’d then be under pressure to investigate the MCM Lab exam, which can be taken remotely (therefore, a much smaller amount of effort to make happen). In some ways, passing could end up just putting a bunch more pressure on me. Oh, and I did.

• The way I think about Diagnostic tools

  Every software has issues, or as we like to call them "bugs". That is not a discussion point, just a mere fact. It follows that an important skill for developers is to be able to diagnose issues in their code. Of course we need to advance our tools and techniques so we can prevent bugs getting into the code (e.g. unit testing), but beyond designing great software, diagnosing bugs is an equally important skill. To diagnose issues, the most important assets are good techniques, skill, experience, and maybe talent. What also helps is having good diagnostic tools and what helps further is knowing all the features that they offer and how to use them. The following classification is how I like to think of diagnostics. Note that like with any attempt to bucketize anything, you run into overlapping areas and blurry lines. Nevertheless, I will continue sharing my generalizations ;-) It is important to identify at the outset if you are dealing with a performance or a correctness issue. If you have a performance issue, use a profiler. I hear people saying "I am using the debugger to debug a performance issue", and that is fine, but do know that a dedicated profiler is the tool for that job. Just because you don't need them all the time and typically they cost more plus you are not as familiar with them as you are with the debugger, doesn't mean you shouldn't invest in one and instead try to exclusively use the wrong tool for the job. Visual Studio has a profiler and a concurrency visualizer (for profiling multi-threaded apps). If you have a correctness issue, then you have several options - that's next :-) This is how I think of identifying a correctness issue Do you want a tool to find the issue for you at design time? The compiler is such a tool - it gives you an exact list of errors. Compilers now also offer warnings, which is their way of saying "this may be an error, but I am not smart enough to know for sure". There are also static analysis tools, which go a step further than the compiler in identifying issues in your code, sometimes with the aid of code annotations and other times just by pointing them at your raw source. An example is FxCop and much more in Visual Studio 11 Code Analysis. Do you want a tool to find the issue for you with code execution? Just like static tools, there are also dynamic analysis tools that instead of statically analyzing your code, they analyze what your code does dynamically at runtime. Whether you have to setup some unit tests to invoke your code at runtime, or have to manually run your app (and interact with it) under the tool, or have to use a script to execute your binary under the tool… that varies. The result is still a list of issues for you to address after the analysis is complete or a pause of the execution when the first issue is encountered. If a code path was not taken, no analysis for it will exist, obviously. An example is the GPU Race detection tool that I'll be talking about on the C++ AMP team blog. Another example is the MSR concurrency CHESS tool. Do you want you to find the issue at design time using a tool? Perform a code walkthrough on your own or with colleagues. There are code review tools that go beyond just diffing sources, and they help you with that aspect too. For example, there is a new one in Visual Studio 11 and searching with my favorite search engine yielded this article based on the Developer Preview. Do you want you to find the issue with code execution? Use a debugger - let’s break this down further next. This is how I think of debugging: There is post mortem debugging. That means your code has executed and you did something in order to examine what happened during its execution. This can vary from manual printf and other tracing statements to trace events (e.g. ETW) to taking dumps. In all cases, you are left with some artifact that you examine after the fact (after code execution) to discern what took place hoping it will help you find the bug. Learn how to debug dump files in Visual Studio. There is live debugging. I will elaborate on this in a separate post, but this is where you inspect the state of your program during its execution, and try to find what the problem is. More from me in a separate post on live debugging. There is a hybrid of live plus post-mortem debugging. This is for example what tools like IntelliTrace offer. If you are a tools vendor interested in the diagnostics space, it helps to understand where in the above classification your tool excels, where its primary strength is, so you can market it as such. Then it helps to see which of the other areas above your tool touches on, and how you can make it even better there. Finally, see what areas your tool doesn't help at all with, and evaluate whether it should or continue to stay clear. Even though the classification helps us think about this space, the reality is that the best tools are either extremely excellent in only one of this areas, or more often very good across a number of them. Another approach is to offer a toolset covering all areas, with appropriate integration and hand off points from one to the other. Anyway, with that brain dump out of the way, in follow-up posts I will dive into live debugging, and specifically live debugging in Visual Studio - stay tuned if that interests you. • How do you guys handle translation for software localization?

  Most of the software I have written over my career has been built for English speaking customers, but recently I've been working on a project where localization of the UI for a wider range of languages is desired. I am just curious how other programming shops obtain the translations. Do they use the notoriously flawed online translation engines? I know there are for-hire translators out there, but am I going to have to track down and contract like a dozen of them to do a thorough job of localizing my interface? Are there services that specialize in doing this for a wide range of languages? Perhaps using something like Amazon's Mechanical Turk would be an option, but I have no idea how diverse the available workforce is on that site. I'd imagine not very.

• Rhythmbox not saving the album art permanently

  I run ubuntu 10.10 and use rhythmbox (version 0.13.1) regularly with the albumartsearch plugin installed. However when I change the album art it is only temporary. On moving to the next song it automatically removes the previous song's album art cover. (I do know about banshee but would like to use rhythmbox). The cover art plugin is also installed by default however it cannot display some of the album covers since the songs are in my local language (tamil) hence it cannot retrieve the album cover from the internet. However the albumartsearch plugin seems to do the job although only temporarily. Any reason why it might be? I have tried looking for other rhythmbox plugins which might be similar to albumartsearch but in vain. Any help would be appreciated. I have filed a bug in the albumartsearch plugin's website. Waiting for the reply.

• Plan your SharePoint 2010 Content Type Hub carefully

  Currently setting up a new environment on SharePoint 2010 (which was made available for download yesterday if anyone missed that :-). One of the new features of SharePoint 2010 is to set up a Content Type Hub (which is a part of the Metadata Service Application), which is a hub for all Content Types that other Site Collections can subscribe to. That is you only need to manage your content types in one location. Setting up the Content Type Hub is not that difficult but you must make it very careful to avoid a lot of work and troubleshooting. Here is a short tutorial with a few tips and tricks to make it easy for you to get started. Determine location of Content Type Hub First of all you need to decide in which Site Collection to place your Content Type Hub; in the root site collection or a specific one. I think using a specific Site Collection that only acts as a Content Type Hub is the best way, there are no best practice as of now. So I create a new Site Collection, at for instance http://server/sites/CTH/. The top-level site of this site collection should be for instance a Team Site. You cannot use Blank Site by default, which would have been the best option IMHO, since that site does not have the Taxonomy feature stapled upon it (check the TaxonomyFeatureStapler feature for which site templates that can be used). Configure Managed Metadata Service Application Next you need to create your Managed Metadata Service Application or configure the existing one, Central Administration > Application Management > Manage Service Applications. Select the Managed Metadata service application and click Properties if you already have created it. In the bottom of the dialog window when you are creating the service application or when you are editing the properties is a section to fill in the Content Type Hub. In this text box fill in the URL of the Content Type Hub. It is essential that you have decided where your Content Type Hub will reside, since once this is set you cannot change it. The only way to change it is to rebuild the whole managed metadata service application! Also make sure that you enter the URL correctly. I did copy and paste the URL once and got the /default.aspx in the URL which funked the whole service up. Make sure that you only use the URL to the Site Collection of the hub. Now you have to set up so that other Site Collections can consume the content types from the hub. This is done by selecting the connection for the managed metadata service application and clicking properties. A new dialog window opens and there you need to click the Consumes content types from the Content Type Gallery at nnnn. Now you are free to syndicate your Content Types from the Hub. Publish Content Types To publish a Content Type from the hub you need to go to Site Settings > Content Types and select the content type that you would like to publish. Then select Manage publishing for this content type. This takes you to a page from where you can Publish, Unpublish or Republish the content type. Once the content type is published it can take up to an hour for the subscribing Site Collections to get it. This is controlled by the Content Type Subscriber job that is scheduled to run once an hour. To speed up your publishing just go to Central Administration > Monitoring > Review Job Definitions > Content Type Subscriber and click Run now and you content type is very soon available for use. Published Content Type status You can check the status of the content type publishing in your destination site collections by selecting Site Settings > Content Type Publishing. From here you can force a refresh of all subscribed content types, see which ones that are subscribed and finally check the publishing error log. This error log is very useful for detecting errors during the publishing. For instance if you use any features such as ratings, metadata, document ids in your content type hub and your destination site collection does not have those features available this will be reported here.

• Load and Web Performance Testing using Visual Studio Ultimate 2010-Part 2

  Welcome back, in part 1 of Load and Web Performance Testing using Visual Studio 2010 I talked about why Performance Testing the application is important, the test tools available in Visual Studio Ultimate 2010 and various test rig topologies. In this blog post I’ll get into the details of web performance & load tests as well as why it’s important to follow a goal based pattern while performance testing your application. Tools => Options => Test Tools Have you visited the treasures of Visual Studio Menu bar tools => Options => Test Tools lately? The options to enable disable prompts on creating, editing, deleting or running manual/automated tests can be controller from here. The default test project language and default test types created on a new test project creation could be selected/unselected from here. Ever wondered how you can change the default limit of 25 test results, this can again be changed from here. If you record a lot of Web Tests and wish for the web test recorder to start with “that” URL populated, well this again can be specified from here. If you haven’t so far, I would urge you to spend 2 minutes in the test tools options.   Test Menu => Ready Steady Test Action! The Test tools are under the Test Menu in Visual Studio, apart from being able to create a new Test and Test List you can also load an existing vsmdi file. You can also manage your test controllers from here. A solution can have one or more test setting files, but there can only be one active test settings file at any time. Again, this selection can be done from here.  You can open the various test windows from under the windows option from the test menu. If you open the Test view window you will see that you have the option to group the tests by work items, project, test type, etc. You can set these properties by right clicking a test in the test list and choosing properties from the context menu.    So, what is a vsmdi file? vsmdi stands for Visual Studio Test Metadata File. Placed under the Solution Items this file keeps track of the list of unit tests in your solution. If you open the vsmdi file as an xml file you will see a series of Test Links nested with in the list Test List tags along with the Run Configuration tag. When in visual studio you run tests, the IDE looks at the vsmdi file to see what tests need to be run. You also have the option of using the vsmdi file in your team builds to specify which tests need to run as part of the build. Refer here for a walkthrough from a fellow blogger on how to use the vsmdi file in the team builds. Web Performance Test – The Truth! In Visual Studio 2010 “Web Tests” have been renamed to “Web Performance Tests”. Apart from renaming this test type there have been several improvements to this test type in visual studio 2010. I am very active on the MSDN Visual Studio And Load Testing forum and a frequent question from many users is “Do Web Tests support Pages that run JavaScript?” I will start with a little bit of background before answering this question. Web Performance Tests operate at the HTTP Layer, but why? To enable you to generate high loads with a relatively low amount of hardware, Web performance tests are driven at the protocol layer rather than instantiating a browser.The most common source of confusion is that users do not realize Web Performance Tests work at the HTTP layer. The tool adds to that misconception. After all, you record in IE, and when running a Web test you can select which browser to use, and then the result viewer shows the results in a browser window. So that means the tests run through the browser, right? NO! The Web test engine works at the HTTP layer, and does not instantiate a browser. What does that mean? In the diagram below, you can see there are no browsers running when the engine is sending and receiving requests. Does that mean I can’t test pages that use Java script? The best example for java script generating HTTP traffic is AJAX calls. The most common example of browser plugins are Silverlight or Flash. The Web test recorder will record HTTP traffic from AJAX calls and from most (but not all) browser plugins. This means you will still be able to web performance test pages that use java script or plugin and play back the results but the playback engine will not show the java script or plug in results in the ‘browser control’. If you want to test the page behaviour as a result of the java script or plug in consider using Coded UI Tests. This page looks like it failed, when in fact it succeeded! Looking closely at the response, and subsequent requests, it is clear the operation succeeded. As stated above, the reason why the browser control is pasting this message is because java script has been disabled in this control. So, to reiterate, the web performance test recorder: - Sends and receives data at the HTTP layer. - Does NOT run a browser. - Does NOT run java script. - Does NOT host ActiveX controls or plugins. I have a web performance test, what next? Creating the Web Performance Test was the first step towards load testing your application. Now that we have the base test we can test the page behaviour when N-users access the page. Have you ever had the head of business call you and mention that the marketing team has done a fantastic job and are expecting increased traffic on the web site, can the website survive the weekend with that additional load? This is the perfect opportunity to capacity test your application to see how your website holds up under various levels of load, you can work the results backwards to see how much hardware you may need to scale up your application to survive the weekend. Apart from that it is always a good idea to have some benchmarks around how the application performs under light loads for short duration, under heavy load for long duration and soak test the application run a constant load for a very week or two to record the effects of constant load for really long durations, this is a great way of identifying how your application handles the default IIS application pool reset which by default is configured to once every 25 hours. These bench marks will act as the perfect yard stick to measure performance gains when you start making improvements. BUT there are some best practices! => Goal Based Load Testing Approach Since the subject is vast and there are a lot of things to measure and analyse, … it is very easy to get distracted from the real goal!  You can optimize your application once you know where the pain points are. There is no point performing a load test of 5000 users if your intranet application will only have a 100 simultaneous users, it is important to keep focussed on the real goals of the project. So the idea is to have a user story around your load testing scenarios and test realistically. So it is recommended that you follow the below outline, It is an Iterative process, refine your objectives, identify the key scenarios, what is the expected workload, key metrics you want to report, record the web performance tests, simulate load and analyse results. Is your application already deployed in Production? This is great! You can analyse the IIS Logs to understand the user behaviour… But what are IIS LOGS? The IIS logs allow you to record events for each application and Web site on the Web server. You can create separate logs for each of your applications and Web sites. Logging information in IIS goes beyond the scope of the event logging or performance monitoring features provided by Windows. The IIS logs can include information, such as who has visited your site, what the visitor viewed, and when the information was last viewed. You can use the IIS logs to identify any attempts to gain unauthorized access to your Web server. How to configure IIS LOGS? For those Ninjas who already have IIS Logs configured (by the way its on by default) and need a way to analyse the IIS Logs, can use the Windows IIS Utility – Log Parser. Log Parser is a very powerful tool that provides a generic SQL-like language on top of many types of data like IIS Logs, Event Viewer entries, XML files, CSV files, File System and others; and it allows you to export the result of the queries to many output formats such as CSV, XML, SQL Server, Charts and others; and it works well with IIS 5, 6, 7 and 7.5. • In SAP Functional a good career path ???

  Hi My name is Sam and I am 23 right know.I have graduated a year back in the domain of computer science.I am currently working as SAP SD consultant and have a project under my belt. Currently working in SAP seems price less as people are dieing for it but at the same time I have really strong academics and many people are forcing me to apply for masters abroad for which I have to leave this job.This decision seems to be really tough. This decision of moving to SAP sometimes makes me happy as it is valuable and on the other hand my technical skills are completey dieing. Most of my accomplishers in my family dont encourage me to be in SAP especially in USA and consider it as a mediocre career. Was my decision right or should I move back to technical and go for MS???
