• Interpreting Others' Source Code

  Note: I am aware of this question. This question is a bit more specific and in-depth, however, focusing on reading the actual code rather than debugging it or asking the author. As a student in an introductory-level computer science class, my friends occasionally ask me to help them with their assignments. Programming is something I'm very proud of, so I'm always happy to oblige. However, I usually have difficulty interpreting their source code. Sometimes this is due to a strange or inconsistent style, sometimes it's due to strange design requirements specified in the assignment, and sometimes it's just due to my stupidity. In any case, I end up looking like an idiot staring at the screen for several minutes saying "Uh..." I usually check for the common errors first - missing semicolons or parentheses, using commas instead of extractor operators, etc. The trouble comes when that fails. I often can't step through with a debugger because it's a syntax error, and I often can't ask the author because he/she him/herself doesn't understand the design decisions. How do you typically read the source code of others? Do you read through the code from top-down, or do you follow each function as it's called? How do you know when to say "It's time to refactor?"

  Suggested steps to fix the nasty Windows power management issue of plugged in not charging. Option 1: Disconnect AC Shutdown Remove battery Connect AC Startup Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1). Shutdown Disconnect AC Insert battery Connect AC Startup Option 2: Turn off laptop. Unplug AC power. Remove battery. Replace AC power. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. Once logged in to the machine, perform a normal shut down. Unplug AC power. Replace battery. Replace AC power. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. The battery should once again be charging as normal Additional troubleshooting techniques: Check battery charging status in the BIOS Update BIOS Replace Battery (I did this and the new battery is not charging) See if the battery charging light works when the laptop is powered down. • Oracle JDK 7u10 released with new security features

  A few days ago, we released JRE and JDK 7 update 10. This release adds support for the following new platforms: Windows 8 on x86-64. Note that Modern UI (aka Metro) mode is not supported. Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) This release also introduces new features that provide enhanced security for Java applet and webstart applications, specifically: The Java runtime tracks if it is updated to the latest security baseline. If you try to execute an unsigned applet with an outdated version of Java, a warning dialog will prompt you to update before running the applet. The Java runtime includes a hardcoded best before date. It is assumed that a new version will be released before this date. If the client has not been able to check for an update prior to this date, the Java runtime will assume that it is insecure and start warning the user prior to executing any applets. The Java control panel now includes an option to set the desired security level on a low-medium-high-very high scale, as well as an option to disable Java applets and webstart entirely. This level controls things such as if the Java runtime is allowed to execute unsigned code, and if so what type of warning will be displayed to the user. • How AlphaBlend Blendstate works in XNA when accumulighting light into a RenderTarget?

  I am using a Deferred Rendering engine from Catalin Zima's tutorial: His lighting shader returns the color of the light in the rgb channels and the specular component in the alpha channel. Here is how light gets accumulated: Game.GraphicsDevice.SetRenderTarget(LightRT); Game.GraphicsDevice.Clear(Color.Transparent); Game.GraphicsDevice.BlendState = BlendState.AlphaBlend; // Continuously draw 3d spheres with lighting pixel shader. ... Game.GraphicsDevice.BlendState = BlendState.Opaque; MSDN states that AlphaBlend field of the BlendState class uses the next formula for alphablending: (source × Blend.SourceAlpha) + (destination × Blend.InvSourceAlpha), where "source" is the color of the pixel returned by the shader and "destination" is the color of the pixel in the rendertarget. My question is why do my colors are accumulated correctly in the Light rendertarget even when the new pixels' alphas equal zero? As a quick sanity check I ran the following code in the light's pixel shader: float specularLight = 0; float4 light4 = attenuation * lightIntensity * float4(diffuseLight.rgb,specularLight); if (light4.a == 0) light4 = 0; return light4; This prevents lighting from getting accumulated and, subsequently, drawn on the screen. But when I do the following: float specularLight = 0; float4 light4 = attenuation * lightIntensity * float4(diffuseLight.rgb,specularLight); return light4; The light is accumulated and drawn exactly where it needs to be. What am I missing? According to the formula above: (source x 0) + (destination x 1) should equal destination, so the "LightRT" rendertarget must not change when I draw light spheres into it! It feels like the GPU is using the Additive blend instead: (source × Blend.One) + (destination × Blend.One)

• Micro sound breaks/interrupts on Windows 7

  Hello all, I've been experiencing strange behavior recently. When listening to mp3 or watching movie or whatever that uses sound, I get micro breaks in sound. It's like it hangs or cuts a fragment for about 0.5s. When I start OS, it's ok, but as time passes it gets worse, to the extent that music is unlistenable being interrupted every 2 seconds. I haven't found any relevance between this behavior and hardware usage, I don't think it's directly related to HDD (or it might be but with significant delay). I have updated soundcard drivers and it didn't help a lot. My system is Windows 7, computer is simple HP laptop, nx7300-Ru374ES with WD Caviar Scorpio Blue hard drive inside and integrated soundcard on it (I can check the model later if it's important). Did anybody encounter such problem ? Maybe it's a common thing on Windows 7 or someone knows how to solve it? Thanks in advance.

• lirc_zilog IR transmission no longer working with HD-PVR on 12.04

  I have been running a ubuntu 10.04 with a patched version of lirc_zilog for two years. I upgraded to 12.04 and lirc_zilog is no longer working with my HD-PVR. The MythTV wiki reports that it did work out of the box with 11.04. I was previously using a manually built version of lirc 0.8.7 and not the packaged one. I'm now running the packaged version 9.0. I can provide any additional information required and will perform tests quickly. I'm very eager to get this issue resolved.

• Enable Remote Desktop File Transfer

  Most of the servers I RDP to support cut-and-paste file transfer (from my Win7 64 machine). One does not, and I can't figure out what configuration step is missing. I followed the steps outlined here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313292 but do not see the local file system on the remote server (or vice versa for that matter), and I cannot cut and paste files from the local to the remote system. If I try to cut and paste from the remote system to the local one, I get the error Cannot copy FILENAME: Windows cannot find '%1!ls!'. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking Search. The remote server is Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.

• Mounting an encrypted partion Error

  Using the disk utilities in ubuntu 11.04, i had encrypted a partition with a passphrase. Each time i used to click on the partition to mount, it used to ask me the passphrase and get mounted. All was fine, until i installed the 12.04. After the installation, this encrypted partition, disappeared from the menu. fdisk -l /dev/sda Shows the encrypted partition in the list /dev/sda7 298953648 488392064 94719208+ 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT I tried the following commands to mount it. But they all gave following errors $ sudo cryptsetup luksDump /dev/sda7 Device /dev/sda7 is not a valid LUKS device. $ ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase /dev/sda7 Passphrase: # i entered the correct passphrase here... Error: Unwrapping passphrase failed [-5] Info: Check the system log for more information from libecryptfs $ grep ecryptfs /var/log/syslog Oct 31 22:43:51 benny ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase: Error attempting to open [/dev/sda7] for reading Nov 1 01:28:02 benny ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase: Error attempting to open [/dev/sda7] for reading Nov 1 01:29:06 benny ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase: Error attempting to open [/dev/sda7] for reading I don't understand why I am getting the "Device /dev/sda7 is not a valid LUKS device."   Sometimes, the arrow keys stop working to scroll pages. Sometimes, in Firefox - Tools - Options - Advanced - Accessibility - General, the first checkbox, about using arrow keys to scroll pages, appears checked and some other times, unchecked. When it's unchecked, I check it. When it's checked, I keep it checked. In both times, I click OK. Then, the arrow keys restart working to scroll pages. I'm having to do it all the time. What should I do?

• Run Python Server at Startup

  Hello, I've got a few Python based servers that I need to run, and would like them to start automatically when I start my Ubuntu Server box. What is the best way to execute them like this? I was hoping I could write a Bash script and use Screen to get them running in the background, where I can check on them every now and then, but where as echo screen -d -m python works just fine, echo screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py` doesn't, with no error messages. Is that something to do with the spaces? Even though I did surround it with backquotes? I also tried: WEB="screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py`" echo $WEB As a way of escaping the spaces, but no luck. What's Bash scripting way to do this? And, once the Bash script works, where can I put it to make it execute on startup?

  My son and I were out to dinner and right after we sat down, he combs the menu to locate the soda  selection.  Then he looks up at me and says “Looks like we get free refills here, sweet!”  While we were sitting there I was thinking where that statement came from and I remember one time where he was helping to figure out the tip and saw that were we charged for six sodas, but there were only four of us at the table.  I would say that’s when this started for eateries he’s not familiar with. I was talking a friend of mine this week and this thought came to me, why can’t we manage expectations like my son – find out before the order is placed.  Find out what’s expected first then use the other bits of guidance to move forward.  But how many times have we all paid way to much for something we thought was free on a project – me, plenty.  This quote is going up in my work space, next to one I picked up Corey Haines’ Software Craftsmanship talk at Open Agile Romania - “Work != Practice”.  So if anyone else has gotten burnt, maybe check the menu, it will be in the area where the customer will pick two from the list of “Price, Quality, or Speed”.  Refills will be listed just beneath that.

• SQL SERVER – SELECT INTO with FileGroup or Partitionis Not Possible

  The other day, I received an email from user and after a long time before I answer the question, I had to check the answer online. Here is the question - I want to create a new table based from old table, but when I execute following script it gives me an error. Is there anything I am missing in my syntax? SELECT *  INTO NewTableName ON MyFileGroup FROM MyOldTableName I faintly remember that this was not possible in earlier version of SQL Server but I was not sure if this feature was added in the recent versions or not. I quickly tried few syntaxes and referred online documentation and learned that it is still not possible in the latest version of SQL Server. The alternative is to just go ahead and change the default filegroup of any new table with following script. Though, I do not like change the default filegroup for new tables. It is possible that when I have changed the default filegroup some other code executes behind the scene by automated system or my colleague, it will be also created on new filegroup. ALTER DATABASE DatabaseName MODIFY FILEGROUP NameofFileGroup DEFAULT The reason this feature is not supported is that SELCT INTO is minimally logged operation. I seriously hope that some day in the future this feature get added in.   My problem is simple : when I'm programming in an OO paradigm, I'm often having part of a main business process divided in many classes. Which means, if I want to examine the whole functional chain that leads to the output, for debugging or for optimization research, it can be a bit painful. So I was wondering : is there an IDE that let you put a "process tag" on functions coming from different objects, and give you a view of all those functions having the same tag ? edit : To give an example (that I'm making up completely, sorry if it doesn't sound very realistic). Let's say we have the following business process for a HR application : receive a holiday-request by an employee, check the validity of the request, then give an alert to his boss ("one of those lazy programmer wants another day off"); at the same time, let's say the boss will want to have a table of all employee's timetable during the time the employee wants his vacations; then handle the answer of the boss, send a nice little mail to the employee ("No way, lazy bones"). Even if we get rid of everything not purely business-related (mail sending process, db handling to get the useful info, GUI functionalities, and so on), we still have something that doesn't really fit in "one class". I'd like to have an IDE that would give me the opportunity to embrace quickly, at the very least : The function handling the validation of the request by the employee; The function preparing the "timetable" for the boss; The function handling the validation of the request by the boss; I wouldn't put all those functions in the same class (but perhaps that's my mistake ?). This is where my dreamed IDE could be helpful.

• Current alternative to the old CHECKSUM program

  I'm looking for an application that does md5/sha hash check on specific files/folders periodically and store an index file per folder for future verification. I remember such application exist in DOS days, to detect files infected by virus. The main purpose for this is to detect corrupted copy of backup, as I understand that consumer grade hardware are not 100% error free when doing backup or file transfer from device to device. The hash can also be used to generate a list of changed files for backup. Most of the software I can find is hash manually. EDIT: Windows based application, preferably a shell extension which I can right click on a folder and do a checksum/verify all files in that folder. Even better if that can integrate with a backup/sync program like BeyondCopy

If I have to give read permissions to some files it will be fine. But there are files I have to protect (like file with DB configuration or business logic of application).

  I am interested to hear discussion of the proposition summarised in the title. As we know programming language constructions admit a vast number of isomorphisms. In some languages in some places in the translation process some of these isomorphisms are implemented, whilst others require code to be written to implement them. For example, in my language Felix, the isomorphism between a type T and a tuple of one element of type T is implemented, meaning the two types are indistinguishable (identical). Similarly, a tuple of N values of the same type is not merely isomorphic to an array, it is an array: the isomorphism is implemented by the compiler. Many other isomorphisms are not implemented for example there is an isomorphism expressed by the following client code: match v with | ((?x,?y),?z = x,(y,z) // Felix match v with | (x,y), - x,(y,z) (* Ocaml *) As another example, a type constructor C of int in Felix may be used directly as a function, whilst in Ocaml you must write a wrapper: let c x = C x Another isomorphism Felix implements is the elimination of unit values, including those in tuples: Felix can do this because (most) polymorphic values are monomorphised which can be done because it is a whole program analyser, Ocaml, for example, cannot do this easily because it supports separate compilation. For the same reason Felix performs type-class dispatch at compile time whilst Haskell passes around dictionaries. There are some quite surprising issues here. For example an array is just a tuple, and tuples can be indexed at run time using a match and returning a value of a corresponding sum type. Indeed, to be correct the index used is in fact a case of unit sum with N summands, rather than an integer. Yet, in a real implementation, if the tuple is an array the index is replaced by an integer with a range check, and the result type is replaced by the common argument type of all the constructors: two isomorphisms are involved here, but they're implemented partly in the compiler translation and partly at run time.

  I am sharing a class I use for both my Windows Phone 8 and Windows Store app projects. Background and my requirements For my Windows Phone 7 projects two years ago I wrote an improved custom MessageBox class that preserves the well-known MessageBox interface while offering several advantages. I documented those and shared it for Windows Phone 7 here: Guide.BeginShowMessageBox wrapper. Aside: With Windows Phone 8 we can now use the async/await feature out of the box without taking a dependency on additional/separate pre-release software. As I try to share code between my existing Windows Phone 8 projects and my new Windows Store app projects, I wanted to preserve the calling code, so I decided to wrap the WinRT MessageDialog class in a custom class to present the same MessageBox interface to my codebase. BUT. The MessageDialog class has to be called with the await keyword preceding it (which as we know is viral) which means all my calling code will also have to use await. Which in turn means that I have to change my MessageBox wrapper to present the same interface to the shared codebase and be callable with await… for both Windows Phone projects and Windows Store app projects. Solution The solution is what the requirements above outlined: a single code file with a MessageBox class that you can drop in your project, regardless of whether it targets Windows Phone 8, or Windows 8 Store apps or both. • Replicate GAE Datastore On A Server LAN in Java

  There may be instances wherein one Company Client may not have internet connection on their vicinity. Either their Internet Service Provider currently experience a down time or there are some other problems involving the network, but not their LAN. GAE seems to be needing a connection at all times in the internet. I only need GAE Datastore. I'm thinking about a different application. Creating a Java Swing Client, for instance, and connecting to the Office Server via HRD of GAE Datastore. When I tried to check on the solutions for Java, it does not say anything about uploading all data and I do not need the App. I just need the GAE Datastore. In Java GAE, only indexes can be able to be manipulated. So, is there any tricks/ideas that you can use HRD with GAE Datastore on Java with an Internal Office Server combined? This way, it may provide service even during network down times. (Can somebody create me a tag of gae-datastore, please.)

• Utility to add visual effects to Windows

  I have no idea how to go about looking for this utility, so I though I would ask here. I recall a small utility that would add Compiz like effects on Windows. It was relatively small, and was released a few years ago. Does anyone know what it was called, and where I can get it? EDIT: It does not add the desktop cube or window switchers. It is more like the Compiz panel, where you can check/uncheck the effects that you want. The effects are applied to windows, and is stuff like fade, blur, etc.
