• optimal memory layout for read-only/write memory segments.

  hello. Suppose I have two memory segments (equal size each, approximately 1kb in size) , one is read-only (after initialization), and other is read/write. what is the best layout in memory for such segments in terms of memory performance? one allocation, contiguous segments or two allocations (in general not contiguous). my primary architecture is linux Intel 64-bit. my feeling is former (cache friendlier) case is better. is there circumstances, where second layout is preferred? • Text Wrapping differences in IE7, IE8, and FF

  When I have this <table> below, the text wraps as needed in FF and IE8, but when I run this in compatibility mode or IE7 the text does not wrap and the width of the previous is basically ignored. Any way to get around this? • Dispelling the UIImage imageNamed: FUD

  I see a lot of people saying imageNamed is bad but equal numbers of people saying the performance is good - especially when rendering UITableViews. See this SO question for example or this article on iPhoneDeveloperTips.com UIImage's imageNamed method used to leak so it was best avoided but has been fixed in recent releases. I'd like to understand the caching algorithm better in order to make a reasoned decision about where I can trust the system to cache my images and where I need to go the extra mile and do it myself. My current basic understanding is that it's a simple NSMutableDictionary of UIImages referenced by filename. It gets bigger and when memory runs out it gets a lot smaller. For example, does anyone know for sure that the image cache behind imageNamed does not respond to didReceiveMemoryWarning? It seems unlikely that Apple would not do this. If you have any insight into the caching algorithm, please post it here.

If I have an IEnumerable<T> and want to use Parallel.ForEach does that imply that I should always be using AsParallel? e.g. Are both of these correct (everything else being equal)? without AsParallel: List<string> list = new List<string>(); Parallel.ForEach<string>(GetFileList().Where(file => reader.Match(file)), f => list.Add(f)); or with AsParallel? • Faster way to perform checks on method arguments

  This is mostly just out of curiosity, and is potentially a silly question. :) I have a method like this: public void MyMethod(string arg1, string arg2, int arg3, string arg4, MyClass arg5) { // some magic here } None of the arguments can be null, and none of the string arguments can equal String.Empty. Instead of me having a big list of: if(arg1 == string.Empty || arg1 == null) { throw new ArgumentException("issue with arg1"); } is there a quicker way to just check all the string arguments?   Apart from graphical estimation of linearity (gaze-at-scatterplot method), which is utilized before applying some technique from GLM family, there are several ways to do this estimation arithmetically (i.e. without graphs). Right now, I'll focus on Fisher's eta-squared - correlation ratio: arithmetically, it's equal to squared Pearson's r (coef. of determination: R2) if relationship between two variables is linear. Hence, you can compare values of eta and r and make an assessment about type of relation (linear or not). It provides an information about percent of variance in the dependent variable explained (linearly or not) by the independent variable. Therefore, you can apply it when linearity assumptions are not met. Simply stated: is there a routine for eta/eta-squared in R?

  I need to use Hidden variables in my JSP for session tracking. this is the code: <input type="hidden" name="REQ_TOKEN" value="<%=session.getAttribute("SESN_TOKEN").toString()%>" /> i am using this to compare the request token with session token, so only when both are equal i will evaluate that request otherwise i will throw an error. Now the problem is, when i place this code inside <form></form> tags, it is working fine. Unfortunately there are some JSPs in my application where we dont have tag(I know that sounds weird!). where can i place my code so that it will work? Cant i use Hidden variables without FORM tag???

• SQL Server - Query Short-Circuiting?

  Do T-SQL queries in SQL Server support short-circuiting? For instance, I have a situation where I have two database and I'm comparing data between the two tables to match and copy some info across. In one table, the "ID" field will always have leading zeros (such as "000000001234"), and in the other table, the ID field may or may not have leading zeros (might be "000000001234" or "1234"). So my query to match the two is something like: select * from table1 where table1.ID LIKE '%1234' To speed things up, I'm thinking of adding an OR before the like that just says: table1.ID = table2.ID to handle the case where both ID's have the padded zeros and are equal. Will doing so speed up the query by matching items on the "=" and not evaluating the LIKE for every single row (will it short circuit and skip the LIKE)?

• Wordpress + VMware CSS path problem

  I posted a similar question earlier today but this question is clearer. I want to locally develop my Wordpress websites (on my Mac) and test them in Internet Explorer (6,7,8) on Windows XP. I can get the MAMP welcome screen to show in Windows XP, so I know VMWare is doing it's thing. The local URL for my site (on my Mac) is: URL (http://d3creative:8888/) But the local URL under VMware/Internet Explorer is: URL (http://192.168.2.1:8888/d3creative/) This is the only way I can get it to show up, problem is all the CSS styles are referencing the local Mac URL (http://d3creative:8888/) So understandably the CSS isn't showing up. Is there a way to tell Windows that "http://192.168.2.1:8888/d3creative/" should equal "http://d3creative:8888/" I've tried editing the "hosts" file within in Windows XP and I've rebooted after making any changes, but nothing is working. My software: MAMP Pro (v1.8.2) Wordpress (v2.8.6) Windows XP (SP3) Internet Explorer (6, 7, 8) Any help would be much appreciated. Stephen Meehan

  I was recently faced with a prompt for a programming algorithm that I had no idea what to do for. I've never really written an algorithm before, so I'm kind of a newb at this. The problem said to write a program to determine all of the possible coin combinations for a cashier to give back as change based on coin values and number of coins. For example, there could be a currency with 4 coins: a 2 cent, 6 cent, 10 cent and 15 cent coins. How many combinations of this that equal 50 cents are there? The language I'm using is C++, although that doesn't really matter too much. edit: This is a more specific programming question, but how would I analyze a string in C++ to get the coin values? They were given in a text document like 4 2 6 10 15 50 (where the numbers in this case correspond to the example I gave)

• Are we in a functional programming fad?

  I use both functional and imperative languages daily, and it's rather amusing to see the surge of adoption of functional languages from both sides of the fence. It strikes me, however, that it looks rather like a fad. Do you think that it's a fad? I know the reasons for using functional languages at times and imperative languages in others, but do you really think that this trend will continue due to the cliched "many-core" revolution that has been only "18 months from now" since 2004 (sort of like communism's Radiant Future), or do you think that it's only temporary; a fascination of the mainstream developer that will be quickly replaced by the next shiny idea, like Web 3.0 or GPGPU? Note, that I'm not trying to start a flamewar or anything (sorry if it sounds bitter), I'm just curious as to whether people will think functional or functional/imperative languages will become mainstream. Edit: By mainstream, I mean, equal number of programmers to say, Python, Java, C#, etc

• problem with null column

  One column in my database (of type double) has some null values. However when i run my code i get the following exception: StrongTypingException The value for column 'CANTITATE' in table 'XLSFacturi' is DBNull. How am I supposed to resolve this ?

• parsing string off a configuration using strtok in C

  in the configuration file i have entries similar to this one: filepath = c:\Program Files\some value Where the path can contain spaces and there are no quotes on that string. I tried parsing this with strtok like: char *option; char *value; value = strtok(line, " ="); strcpy(option, value); value = strtok(NULL, " ="); where line is the line I am reading from the file, option will contain the left side of the equal (filepath) and value will contain the right side (c:\program files\some value). I know, it's poor coding, but I haven't found something better. sorry... In any case, for those options where there's no space in the right side it works great, but in those containing spaces it only return the string until the 1st space: c:\Program. Is there any other way to do this? Code is appreciated. Jessica

• Drawing reflexive edges in State Machines

  I have to draw a small finite state machine that has some reflexive transitions (meaning the start and the end state of the transition are equal.   Hello Guys, Im trying to query a sort of from - to date. e.g. 20-01-2010 to 20-02-2010. this should include the mentioned dates. i've tried the following queries but none works. select * from [tableName] where date = '20-01-2010' AND date <= '20-02-2010' the date where date is equal to 20-02-2010 does not show. i don't know why. select * from [tableName] where date between '20-01-2010' AND '20-02-2010' the mentioned dates is not included in the results. i want it to be included in the results. please help. thanks in advance! :)

• Speech Recognition Server Does Not Stay Open

  I am trying to create a simple program that loops for user speech input using com.apple.speech.recognitionserver. My code thus far is as follows: set user_response to "start" repeat while user_response is not equal to "Exit" tell application id "com.apple.speech.recognitionserver" set user_response to listen for {"Time", "Weather", "Exit"} with prompt "Good Morning" end tell if user_response = "Time" then set curr_time to time string of (the current date) set curr_day to weekday of (the current date) say "It is" say curr_time say "on" say curr_day say "day" else if user_response = "Weather" then say "It is hot outside. What do you expect?" end if end repeat say "Have a good day" If the above is run on my system it says good morning and it then pops up with the speech input system and waits for either Time, Weather, or Exit. They all do what they say they are going to do, but instead of looping if I say Time and Weather and asking again until I say exit the speechserver times out and never pops up again. Is there a way of either keeping that application open until the program ends or is applescript not capable of looping for user speech input?

  If you were going to hire a programmer to work for/with you, what level of CS education would you prefer them to have and why? This assumes all other things are equal which, of course, they never are in real life. Self taught? Bachelor's? Masters? PHD? The important part of the answer is why, not the level. I'm looking for how important people think a Computer Science education really is and if one can go too far. A little clarification: To make things a little more even, assume you're hiring them without a lot of work experience. Obviously having a higher education is of less value the farther you are from graduation.

Using C# I would do something like this then store the value in a database. byte[] b = File.ReadAllBytes(@"C:\image.jpg"); string hash = ComputeHash(b); Now, if i use say a Java program that implements the same hashing alogorithm (Md5), can i expect the hash values to be the equal to the value generated in C#? What if i execute the java program from different environments, Windows, Linux or Mac?

• Why is QProcess converting the '=' in my arguments to spaces

  I've run into a weird error with a Qt program running on Windows. The program uses QProcess to spawn a child process wit two arguments. The program and arguments passed to the QProcess::start() method are of the form: "batchfile.bat" "--option1=some_value" "--option2=some_other_value\with_a\path" For some reason by the time those options get to the batchfile for processing the equals signs have been converted to spaces and it now looks like: "batchfile.bat" "--option1 some_value" "--option2 some_other_value\with_a\path" because of this, the processing fails. Any ideas what could be causing the equal signs to be replaced by spaces? I'm using the mingw build of the QT 4.6.3 framework found on the Qt download page.

  I'm working through Exercise 21.2.3 of HtDP on my own and was wondering if this is idiomatic usage of the various functions. (map price< (build-list (length lot) (local ((define (f x) ua)) f)) lot))])) To my novice eyes, that seems pretty ugly because I have to define a local function to get build-list to work, since map requires two lists of equal length. Can this be improved for readability? Thank you.
