• Java Architecture Decision !!

  Hi everybody! I'm developing a medium Java app, and i'm facing a small problem due to my lack of expirience. I've a custom DAO, which gets "Article" objects from the DataBase. I've the Article class, and the DAO has a method called getArticle(int id), this method returns an Article. The Article has a Category object, and i'm using lazy loading. So, when i request for an Article Category (Article a = new Article(); a.getCategory();) the Article class gets the Category from the DAO and then returns it. I'm now thinking to cache it, so when i request multiple times to an Article's category, the database is only queried one time. My question is: where should i put that cache? I can put it on the Article class (in the DTO), or i can put it on the DAO class. What do you say? Thanks!

• Javascript pass reference by value

  Im having this weird reference issue when im trying to get a JSON file through query: var themeData; $.getJSON("json/sample.js", function(data) { themeData = data.theme; console.log(themeData.sample[0].description); }); console.log(themeData.sample[0].description); The first console.log works, the second doesnt. Im guessing because "data" already expired by the time the script gets there and themeData is just a mere pointer to "data". Is there a ways I can make sure themeData gets a duplicate of "data" and not just a pointer to it?

• Android Dropdown (Select) CSS

  I'm currently writing some stylesheets for mobile browsers and have come across a strange issue in the Android browser. When changing the font-size CSS attribute of a text box the box gets bigger to accomodate the larger text. Doing this on a select box however does not change the size of the select box, but the text still gets larger (actually overlapping the top and bottom of the rendered form element). Can anyone tell me if it's possible to increase the height of select boxes in the Android browser. Or if not point me in the direction of a list of CSS attributes that can be applied to them. • Using the JNotify library, how can you tell if a deleted file was a file or a directory?

  For those unfamiliar with JNotify, this is a library which provides an easy way to monitor events in a directory. For instance, when a file gets deleted in the selected folder, the method "fileDeleted" gets called, along with a few parameters. Here's an example of the fileDeleted method: public void fileDeleted(int wd, String rootPath, String name) { print("deleted " + rootPath + " : " + name); } Now, I would like to know if the deleted file was a file or directory. My usual approach is to create a new File object with the given path, and use the methods isFile() and isDirectory() However, since this file is already deleted, these methods always return false. So here's my concrete question: I have the path to a deleted file or directory, how can I tell wether it was a file or a directory? Is there a workaround to this? What's the best practice to do here? • Copy and pasting code into the Python interpreter

  There is a snippet of code that I would like to copy and paste into my Python interpreter. Unfortunately due to Python's sensitivity to whitespace it is not straightforward to copy and paste it a way that makes sense. (I think the whitespace gets mangled) Is there a better way? Maybe I can load the snippet from a file. • Attaching a function to the parent window from an iframe and getting proper scope

  I working on adding file uploading to my web application. I'm using an iframe to post my upload. When my php script processes the upload it writes some JavaScript to the iframe. This JavaScript is attempting to attach a function to the parent, this works, but when this function actually gets called it doesn't have the correct scope. Here is the code I'm attaching to the parent window: parent.window.showPreview = function(coords) { if (parseInt(coords.w) > 0) { var rx = 200 / coords.w; var ry = 250 / coords.h; $('#preview').css({ width: Math.round(rx * 400) + 'px', height: Math.round(ry * 533) + 'px', marginLeft: '-' + Math.round(rx * coords.x) + 'px', marginTop: '-' + Math.round(ry * coords.y) + 'px' }); } } When this function gets executed I get an error that says $ is not defined. I've tried adding changing the JQuery call to parent.$('#preview').css..., but then it says that parent is undefined. Any ideas?

  Consider the following snippet: $(document).bind('mousemove', function(e) { $('#someDiv').css({left: e.pageX+'px', top: e.pageY+'px'}); }); This should make #someDiv follow the mouse (tooltip), when the css value for "position" is set to absolute. Works as expected, except when you Zoom IN or OUT in IE7 ( dind't try other version of IE). Then the e.pageX gets completely off. The more you zoom in (using your mousewheel + CTRL), the more off the positioning gets. I've tried to break jQuery's UI demos (sliders) and it seems not even jQuery guys have this figured out. Is there any genius out there who knows how to fix this nasty thing? Thanks in advance!

• Postgresql sequences

  When I delete all records from a Postgresql table and then try to reset the sequence to start a new record with number 1 when it is inserted, i get different results : SELECT setval('tblname_id_seq', (SELECT COALESCE(MAX(id),1) FROM tblname)); This sets the current value of the sequence to 1, but the NEXT record (actually the first because there are no records yet) gets number 2! And I can't set it to 0, because the minimum value in the sequence is 1! When I use : ALTER SEQUENCE tblname_id_seq RESTART WITH 1; the first record that is inserted actually gets number 1 ! But the above code doesn't accept a SELECT as a value instead of 1. I wish to reset the sequence to number 1 when there are no records, and the first record then should start with 1. But when there ARE already records in the table, I want to reset the sequence so that the next record that is inserted will get {highest}+1 Does anyone have a clear solution for this?

• How to diagnose, and reverse (not prevent) Unicode mangling

  Somewhere upstream of me, "something" happened that looks like unicode mangling. One symptom is that a lowercase u umlaut (ü) gets converted to "ü" (ie, character FC gets converted to C3 BC). Assuming that I have no control over this upstream process, how can I reverse-engineer what's going on? And if that is possible, can I crank the sausage machine backwards and get the original text back? (If it helps to understand this case, the text I received was in the form of a MySQL dump. I think somwewhere in the dump/transport process it got mangled.)

• C# Express 2010 Multi-Threading

  Hi, I have a windows app that I have been running in c# Express 2008 for a year and have been trying to convert it over the last few days to 2010. The problem I am having is it is a multi-threaded application that has to run a series of code every second. What it does is have a main thread, that calls 3 worker threads, waits for them to finish then does some additional processing, sleeps till 1 second and runs again. The problem is part of the code can call a web service that takes 8 seconds to respond, so this bit of code gets called using ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem. The problem is when running in 2010 when this part of the code gets called the main thread continues to run but when it awakens the sub threads it hangs until the Threadpool method finishes running. This never happens in 2008. Any suggestions? So far I put that bit of code in it's own thread rather than using Threadpool but same issue.

• Where are Wireless Profiles stored in Ubuntu [closed]

  Where does Ubuntu store profiles that allow it to remember the credentials to private wireless networks that it has previously authenticate to and used? I just replaced my Uncle's hard drive with a new one and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (he had Ubuntu 9.10 on his old hard drive. He is at my house right now, and I want him to be able to access his private wireless network when he gets home. Usually, when I upgrade Ubuntu, I have his /home directory on another partition, so his wireless profile to his own network persists. However, right now, I'm trying to figure out which .folder I need to copy from his /home/user folder on the old hard drive, to the new hard drive, so that he will be able to have wireless Internet when he gets home. Does anyone know with certainty, exactly which folder I need to copy to the new hard drive to achieve this?

• Searching for the right pattern to handle login data

  Hi all, I'm working on a controller that handles logins for a Web app. These logins will come from multiple clients but will all contain the same data. However, depending on the client, this data will be interpreted into common entities for our webapp differently. For instance, we have a user code that gets sent in, and in one case we may use the first four digits of the code, and in another case 12 digits of the code to map to a field on a User entity. Instead of handling this all in the controller and having big nasty if blocks of logic, I would like to use a pattern to handle how this information gets ingested into our application. What are your opinions?

• Send custom data when initializing java WebService over soap

  Hello. I have a question about sending additional data over soap to the functions. My webService function requests only one integer, for example an getDocumentPrivilage(DocumentID). In another WebService user registered and he got an unique ID, so the other application can see who he is. So on Service one he registers, gets id and it has to send it to the other webservice tor the privilage. Id dont wish to rewrite the function so that it gets the unique ID (like this getDocumentPrivilage(uniqID,DocumentID)) but, the wish is that i would be able to create a client that sends this data at the initialization or somehow as some sort of parameter behind the function. Is this possible?? I tried the ServiceLifecycle but cant see any setting i've given in. Im using WebSphere CE for the server and Jax-ws Creating the webapp in java. • WPF layout calls MeasureOverride repeatedly in increments of 2?

  I've run into a case where I have a custom Panel (inherits from Panel) and I'm using it as an ItemsPanel in a ListView. When I resize the container that it's in, if I resize it smaller, my panel's MeasureOverride function gets called once, but if I resize it larger (let's say from 100 to 300), it calls MeasureOverride and ArrangeOverride for every value between 100 and 300, in increments of 2 (so 102, 104, etc.). The weird thing is that the container resizes right away (its size gets to 300 immediately). It doesn't seem to matter what I return from MeasureOverride - it just does this. I wish I could make it happen in a really small application and post it here, but I haven't been able to reproduce it like that yet. I can reproduce it all day in my app though. Does anyone know what could cause this?

• UIButton not getting touch events inside a custom UITableViewCell

  Hi! I have designed a custom UItableView Cell in IB. This cell has a UIButton with an associated action. This button is not getting touch events, however the cell itself gets the events when called. What could I be doing wrong here. +--------------------------------+ | +----------+ | Cell | Button | | +----------+ +--------------------------------+ When I tap on the Button tableviewcell gets the events. What could be wrong? EDIT: I just checked, that UIButton is also getting touch events, but so is the UITableViewCell. And at then end of it the action associated with UIButton is not getting called.

• load balancer question c# asp.net

  The place where I work has 2 servers and a load balancer. The setup is horrible since I have to manually make sure both servers have the same files. I know there are ways to automate this but it has not been implemented, hopefully soon (I have no control over this). I wrote an application that collects a bunch of information from a user, then creates a folder named after the email of the user in one of the servers. The problem is that I can't control in which server the folder gets created in, so let say a user goes in.. fills his stuff and his folder gets created in server 1, user goes away for a while and goes back to the site but this time the load balancer throws the user into server 2, now the user does something that needs to be saved into his folder but since it didn't created in this server an error occurs. What can I do about this? any suggestions? Thanks

• Exposing console apps to the web with Ruby

  I'm looking to expose an interactive command line program via JSON or another RPC style service using Ruby. I've found a couple tricks to do this, but im missing something when redirecting the output and input. One method at least on linux is to redirect the stdin and stdout to a file then read and write to that file asynchronously with file reads and writes. Another method ive been trying after googling around was to use open4. • Problems getting PowerPoint Combobox to list items correctly

  I am creating a PowerPoint in which I want users to be able to select an item from a list in a combo box. Nothing needs to happen after this, it is just to provide a record, on screen, of their choice. My problem is that I seem to either be able to populate the combo box and users can select an item but the list gets longer each time the combobox is clicked on (i.e each time it is clicked on the list gets duplicated). Or alternatively, I can clear the combo box, then populate it but in this scenario, the users choice also seems to get cleared. • Is there any way to print the actual query that mysqli->execute() makes?

  I have a complex query that gets executed like this: if ($stmt = $dbi->prepare($pt_query)) { $stmt->bind_param('ssssssssi', $snome,$scognome,$ssocieta,$svia,$slocalita,$sprovincia,$scap,$stelefono,$sfax,$uid); $stmt->execute(); echo $dbi->error; $stmt->close(); } else { printf("Error -> %s\n", $dbi->error); } This thing is failing without any error, it simply doesn't update the database. Since there is a ton of data that gets treated before this thing I would like to know if there is any way to show the actual query that mysqli is executing in order to understand where the problem is. • Rails before_filter on subclasses beeing called twice

  Hi! I'm at Rails 2.3.5 and I have this problem: class BaseController < ApplicationController before_filter :foo, :only => [:index] end class ChildController < BaseController before_filter :foo, :only => [:index, :show, :other, :actions] end The problem is that on ChildController, the :foo before filter gets called twice. I've tried a number of workarounds around this problem. If I don't include the :index action on the child, it never gets called for that action. The solution I found works, but is very very ugly skip_before_filter :foo before_filter :foo, :only => [:index, :show, :other, :actions] Is there a better way to solve this problem? Thanks

• qt custom widgets propertis are not getting updated properly in Qt designer

The widget gets loaded fine,the properties appear in QT Designer, Only problem is every time I change the property of Alpha key,the numeric also gets set, Though the accessor functions are different,and the enums are differnet and values are different. Also whenever i check the Form-view code,the values would have got modified. • PHP: image size help me out

  Yes following from this: PHP: if more than ..px resize to.. As you can see it resizes if: if($width > 604 && $height > 453) { This works fine.. Although what if $width is over 604, and $height is under 453.. eg: 604x300, then this will skip the resize procedure..and same contrary(width is under, height is over). Also, if the dimensions on a picture is 500x900, and it gets resized, it gets really ugly resized. any great fix? Any good suggestion on how I should handle this please?

• jquery updating a div in ajax diesnt work properly, when using a variable

  hi, i got the following code var zieldiv = $(this).attr(\'id\'); $.ajax({ url: \'index.php?params\', type: \'POST\', data: { color:thenewcolor, zieldiv:zieldiv }, timeout: 50000, beforeSend: function() { $("#" + zieldiv).css({background: "#" + thenewcolor} ); } }); I use this for dragging a small div into a bigger div. the variable at the beginnning would give out the string "test1". So in the ajax.thing the css of a div which matches the var zieldiv should be updatet. Problem is, if i would place a string instead a var into the $(...) like $("#test1") it acts like its supposed to, the #test1 gets updated. but if i use the var $("#" + zieldiv) the parent div, which is surrounding the #test1-div gets updated. but i know for sure the var zieldiv contains the string "test1", because when passing it to php it contains "test1". so i think this is a little strange. do you have any ideas? thanx, maschek

• Windows fonts not immediately useable in application after installing?

  Whenever I install a new font on a Windows 2003 server, I can't use it immediately in my asp.net web application. The application gets the font through the CreateFontIndirect gdi32.dll win api. It seems like fonts get cached somewhere, because I will just get the default font returned. The font cache gets updated after a reboot, and then I get the correct font, but obviously I wouldn't like to do a reboot on a production server just for getting a new font to work. Is there a way to flush the font cache?
