• SQL Server: How to shrink FileStream files?

  For a project, I'm using a SQL Server 2008 R2. One table has a filestream column. I've made some load tests, and now the database has ~20GB used. I've empty tables, except several(configuration tables). But my database was still using a lot of space. So I used the Task -> Shrink -> Database / Files But my database is still using something like 16GB. I found that it's the filestream file is still using a lot of space. The problem is that I need to backup this database to export it on the final production server, and event if I indicate to compress the backup I got a file more than 3.5Go. Not convenient to store and upload. And I'm planning much bigger test, so I want to know how to shrink that empty space. When I'm trying: I get this exception: The properties SIZE, MAXSIZE, or FILEGROWTH cannot be specified for the FILESTREAM data file 'FileStreamFile'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5509) So what should I do? I found several topics with this error but they was about removing the filestream column.

• SQL Server 2008: Can't connect to remote server via management studio but can telnet in fine

  Hi, I am in the process of trying to configure SQL Server 2008 to accept remote connections. I have been through all the documentation I can find and yet when I attempt to connect through management studio I get an error stating that the server could not be found. Interestingly I can connect through telnet to the remote server via the port that sql server is listening on. In the SQL Server logs I can see the connection attempt. So SQL Server is up and running and listening on the correct port - no firewall blocking it. It would appear that by default SQL Server is listening on port 50314 by default but management studio attempts to connect on port 1433.Weird. Server Management Studio = no dice. Anyone got any ideas? Server is set to allow remote connections - TCP IP is enabled, firewall is off. Thanks UPDATE FOR TO CLEAR THINGS UP A BIT We are seeing the connection attempt when we telnet in on port 50314 in the sql server logs. When we login through management studio we see it attempting connection on port 1433. There is no sign of this connection attempt in the logs.

  I have a quite complicated query which will by built up dynamically and is saved in a variable. As second part i have another normal query and i'd like to make an inner join between these both. To make it a little more easier here is a little example to illustrate my problem. For this little example i used the AdventureWorks database. Some query built up dynamically (Yes, i know here is nothing dynamic here, cause it's just an example.) • What is the definition of "Big Data"?

  Is there one? All the definitions I can find describe the size, complexity / variety or velocity of the data. Wikipedia's definition is the only one I've found with an actual number Big data sizes are a constantly moving target, as of 2012 ranging from a few dozen terabytes to many petabytes of data in a single data set. However, this seemingly contradicts the MIKE2.0 definition, referenced in the next paragraph, which indicates that "big" data can be small and that 100,000 sensors on an aircraft creating only 3GB of data could be considered big. IBM despite saying that: Big data is more simply than a matter of size. have emphasised size in their definition. O'Reilly has stressed "volume, velocity and variety" as well. Though explained well, and in more depth, the definition seems to be a re-hash of the others - or vice-versa of course. I think that a Computer Weekly article title sums up a number of articles fairly well "What is big data and how can it be used to gain competitive advantage". But ZDNet wins with the following from 2012: “Big Data” is a catch phrase that has been bubbling up from the high performance computing niche of the IT market... If one sits through the presentations from ten suppliers of technology, fifteen or so different definitions are likely to come forward. Each definition, of course, tends to support the need for that supplier’s products and services. Imagine that. Basically "big data" is "big" in some way shape or form. What is "big"? Is it quantifiable at the current time? If "big" is unquantifiable is there a definition that does not rely solely on generalities?

  Already 10 days has passed since SQL Bits X in London. I really enjoyed it! Those kind of events are great not only for the content but also to meet friends that – due to distance – is not possible to meet every day. Friends from PASS, SQL CAT, Microsoft, MVP and so on all in one place, drinking beers, whisky and having fun. A perfect mixture for a great learning and sharing experience! I’ve also enjoyed a lot delivering my session on Temporal Snapshot Fact Tables. Given that the subject is very specific I was not expecting a lot of attendees….but I was totally wrong! It seems that the problem of handling daily snapshot of data is more common than what I expected. I’ve also already had feedback from several attendees that applied the explained technique to their existing solution with success. • Google Webmaster Tools Data Highlighter says "Failed to load data, please try again later"

  I seem to be unable to access the data highlighter in Google Webmaster Tools since I attempted to start a new highlight on a page. Clicking the red Start Highlighting button to open the tagger did nothing, so I refreshed. Now, the page loads without the middle content section, then a few seconds later shows the following error: Failed to load data, please try again later. I can't get any of the middle section to load, even the list of current pages/page sets that have been highlighted—this error shows. I thought it may be a Google service outage, but other sites' data highlighters work fine. It also seems coincidental that it stopped working after I attempted to start highlighting—I was able to list the existing pages and page sets fine before that, and still am able to access the service on other sites. I've tried clearing browser data and have tried Google Chrome as well—same problem. What's happened?

• Having problems with connecting to/seeing the local SQL server with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

  I'm having some difficulties when I'm trying to connect to my local SQL Server. I'm pretty sure the server is running (many of the other topics on this subject suggests that the services might not be running, so I kinda looked into it, but they do seem to be running). But when I try to access it through Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio it doesn't seem to be able to find them. • Can't save data for a member in a data form

  Implied sharing is an old thing everyone knows the reasons and solutions of that, still little theory about that: With Essbase implied sharing, some members are shared even if you do not explicitly set them as shared. These members are implied shared members. When an implied share relationship is created, each implied member assumes the other member’s value. Essbase assumes (or implies) a shared member relationship in these situations: 1. A parent has only one child 2. A parent has only one child that consolidates to the parent In a Planning form that contains members with an implied sharing relationship, when a value is added for the parent, the child assumes the same value after the form is saved. Likewise, if a value is added for the child, the parent usually assumes the same value after a form is saved.For example, when a calculation script or load rule populates an implied share member, the other implied share member assumes the value of the member populated by the calculation script or load rule. The last value calculated or imported takes precedence. The result is the same whether you refer to the parent or the child as a variable in a calculation script. A dynamic calc parent to a single child:  If we design the form with following selection: In the data form we will find parent below the member and this is by design whenever you make a selection using commands to select all the member below parent, always children will appear before the parent: Lets try to enter data, Save it Now, try to change the way we selected members Here we go: Now the question again why this behavior: 1. Data from Planning data form passes to Essbase row by row, 2. Because in data form the child member appears before the parent, 3. First, data goes to Essbase for child (SingleStoreChild), 4. Then when Planning passes the data for parent there was #Missing or No data,  5. Over writes the data to #missing. PS: As we know that dynamic calc members are calculated on the fly they are not allocated with any memory in the Essbase, here the parent was dynamic calc and it was pointing to same memory as child in the background, when Planning was passing data to Essbase for second row it has updated the child with missing data.(Little confusing, let me know if you need more explanation) 6.   Hi, I want to display the Access Rights given to the Users for the particular module. I have Seven Tables such as RoleAccess, Roles, Functions, Module, SubModule, Company and Unit. RoleAccess is the Main Table. The AccessRights given will be stored in the RoleAccess Table only. RoleAccess Table has the following columns such as RoleID, CompanyID, UnitID, FunctionID, ModuleID, SubModuleID, Create, Update, Delete, Read, Approve. Here Create_f, Update_f, Delete_f, Read_f and Approve_f are flags. Company Table has two columns such as CompanyID and CompanyName. Unit Table has three columns such as UnitID, UnitName and CompanyID. Roles Table has four columns such as RoleID, RoleName, CompanyID and UnitID. Module Table has two columns such as ModuleID and ModuleName. SubModule Table has three columns such as ModuleID, SubModuleID, SubModuleName. Functions Table has five columns such as FunctionID, FunctionName, ModuleID and SubModuleID. At First, The RoleAccess Table does not contain any records. So I want to display the ModuleName, SubModuleName, FunctionName, CompanyID, RoleID, UnitID, FunctionID, ModuleID, SubModuleID, Create_f, Update_f, Delete_f, Read_f and Approve_f. If the AccessRights is assigned to the Particular RoleID means the flags in the search results will be 1 else it will be 0. I have witten one stored procedure but it displays the records based on the RoleID stored in the RoleAccess table. But I also want to display the Flags as 0 for the Roles not stored in the RoleAccess Table. I want the Stored Procedure for this. Any one please help me.

  For example, i have a column named EmployeeName. Every time a user changes/fix his name, i need to keep a count. If he changes his name twice, then count is 2. Also, i need to store the time of every change employee makes on EmployeeName e.g. if the name essentially is James and time created is 9:00 AM and then employee changes to John on 11:00 AM, i need to preserve this new time and new value as well as the previous one which is James at 9:00 AM. • How would I design this table in SQL?

  I have a parent master table that is generic enough to hold the common information of the children. Since the children were substantially different, we created separate tables for them. So I have something like this: tblMaster -------- MasterID int Name varchar(50) --Common to all children and there are a bunch of fields like this ChildType int -- Type of Child either ChildOne or ChildTwo ChildID int -- need to store ChildOneID or ChildTwoID depending on type of Child, so that i can refer to children tblChild1 -------- ChildOneID int IDENTITY tblChild2 --------- ChildTwoID int IDENTITY Should I have a ChildID in the master that is either ChildOneID or ChildTwoID based on the ChildType column? I have a number of children and I have simplified it for this question. The other way is to add ChildOneID and ChildTwoID as columns in the master, but since i have a number of columns, I will have a lot of null columns EDIT: Any help is appreciated

  Hi, We have a Windows 2008 cluster with several SQL 2008 instance. We would like to run a script that modifies 4 registry keys prior to the startup of SQL. I do not know if there is a way to have a script run through Windows 2008 clustering that does that. I have a VBS script to do it and tried to add a Generic Script to an existing cluster group, but it failed saying it could not be registered. Any ideas?

  I have a table which has approximately sixty tables, and other tables are added constantly. Each table is a part of a schema. A such quantity of tables makes it difficult to use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. For example, I must scroll up in object explorer to access database related functions, or scroll down each time I need to access Views or Security features. Is it possible to group several tables to be able to expand or collapse them in Object Explorer? Maybe a folder may be displayed for each schema, letting collapse the folders I don't need to use?

• SQL Server 2008 R2 Error 15401 when trying to add a domain user

  I am trying to add a domain user. I am doing the following. Expand Security Right click on Logins Select New Login... Login name select search Click on location and select entire directory Type username Click checkname The name goes underlined and add some more info Click OK Click OK I then get the following error: I have found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324321. The Login does exist There is no Duplicate security identifiers Authentication failure I don't think is happening as I can browse AD Case sensitivity should not be the problem as I am doing the checkname and it is correcting it. Not a Local account Name resolution again I can see the AD I have rebooted the server (VM) and the issue is still happening. Any ideas?
