• Can't install gimp-plugin-registry

  I tried to install the Ubuntu Studio Graphics meta-package, however it didn't install correctly.The package gimp-plugin-registry just won`t install, i tried the one in the Software center and the one on the WebUp8 PPA neither package works. The following NEW packages will be installed: gimp-plugin-registry 0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0B/1395kB of archives. After this operation, 3592kB of additional disk space will be used. (Reading database ... 402557 files and directories currently installed.) • Disable incognito in chrome or chromium

  I'm addicted to certain websites to the point where it's interfering with my life regularly and sick of it. I want to install website blockers that aren't easy to circumvent. In Chrome, incognito mode is easily accessible with a ctrl-shift-n. That is ridiculous. Whenever I feel an urge to go on an addictive website, it doesn't matter what blockers and regulators I've got installed; three keys can get round them in a second. Simply uninstalling chrome isn't an option either, as it's way too easy to sudo apt-get install it right back. So yes, I want to disable incognito mode completely (and if possible making it totally impossible to get it back). • pwmconfig: "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed"

  I'm trying to reduce my fan speed with fancontrol and pwmanager because, despite the temperatures being the same, they are much louder on Linux (Ubuntu Gnome 14.04) than on Windows. I've followed the instructions in the first answer here but when running pwmanager I get pwmconfig: "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed" I know that my system has working thermal sensors because PSensor has no trouble telling me my CPU temp and GPU temp. I would appreciate any help you can give in helping me reduce my fan speed to that of Windows (which uses the ASUS AI Suite 3 software which came with the Z87-A motherboard, if that's relevant).

• Installing Ubuntu on btrfs over multiple drives

  When I installed Ubuntu 13.04, I managed to combine a couple of outdated askubuntu answers, as well as some of the btrfs documentation in order to figure out how to install Ubuntu over two SSDs using a single btrfs partition (I think /boot was on a small ext4 partition). I want to install Ubuntu 13.10 in a similar way, using a single btrfs partition striping data over the two SSDs, but I don't feel comfortable synthesizing a method that I am sure will work with current software. What is the best way to partition and install Ubuntu over two SSDs using btrfs, in an effectively RAID 0 way?

So far, I identified the following general groups of features: User role modeling and personas support, User stories and epics management, Acceptance testing support, High-level release planning, Low-level iteration planning, and Progress tracking. Each group contains some specific features, e.g., support for story points, writing of acceptance tests, etc. Which features of user story management should an agile team look for especially when switching from tangible tools (index cards, pin boards and big visible charts) to a software tool? • Install a Mirror without downloading all the packages in the official repository

  I first gonna explain the situation : ( The two PCs are running Ubuntu 12.04 ) I have a Laptop which is connected to a wifi connection, and a Desktop which can not be connected to Internet ( the modem is too far from it ), and i want to install some software to the last one. ( the two PCs are connected with an Ethernet cable ) I've already searched for a solution, but all i found was the use of some softwares that should have been already installed on the "Internet-less PC". ( Keryx, APTonCD ... ) What I want to do is to create a mirror in my laptop which contain the packages i have in this one ( situated in /var/cache/apt/archive ) and i don't want to download all the packages from the official repository, I don't need them. Can someone tell me if this is possible ? Thank you.

We chatted about learning Xcode and Objective-C, provisioning devices and the app publishing process. We all have a .NET background and made lots of comparisons between the two platforms/ecosystems/fanbois. They even let me throw in a plug for Christian Radio Locator. Jeff was my first contact with the Kansas City .NET community. It was probably about 10 years ago. He pushed me to talk more (and rescued me from my first talk that bombed) and blog more. One time a group of us took a 16 hour car trip to South Carolina for a code camp and live podcasted the whole thing. • Should I concentrate on writing code for money or my studies while in college?

  I am college student of Software Engineering. My worries are that while I am concentrating on my studies, my peers are getting down with the code (e.g. HTML, ASP, PHP, etc) to earn money. Should I be worried that I am not doing coding like them? I was asked to be Microsoft Student Partner but I refused because the person what was doing before me told it was just arranging events. Nothing as such like getting with Microsoft and coding. Should I be writing code and earning money as I still am in 4th semester? I only have C++ as learning language in college. Will my job count on these projects that I do, or should I concentrate on studies for now to get maximum benefit?

We are making websites for free for friends at the moment in order to get ourselves some experience and to learn from each other. We are about to finish our first website this week. In 6 months time we plan to have a portfolio and hope to start charging for websites. The issue is that we are all beginners and we are unsure about how to keep records of the websites we do. It is important as we may want to maintain a few websites or add to them later on. How does a proper web design business keep records of all info needed? • Moving from C# to Java [closed]

  I worked over 5 years as C# software developer, but last time I often think, should I learn Java platform (especially Java EE)? On job sites I see that there are much more Java jobs than .NET (financial, corporate sector) and Java salaries 20-25% higher than C#. But on the opposite side I see that job count trend for C# is growing last 7 years, but Java job trend is nearly constant. Is this fact a sign that soon situation will change and C# job became more profitable? I will be grateful for any advice or your opinion! Thank you.

• How to setup passwordless SSH access for root user

  I need to configure a machine so software installation can be automated remotely via SSH. Following the wiki, I was able to setup SSH keys so my user can access the machine without a password, but I still need to manually enter my password when I use sudo, which obviously an automated process shouldn't have to do. Although my /etc/ssh/sshd_config has PermitRootLogin yes, I can't seem to be able to login as root, presumably because it's not a "real" account with a separate password. How do I configure SSH keys, so a process can remotely login as root on Ubuntu?

• How do I make my volume indicator operate in decibels instead of percentage?

  When I want to adjust the volume of anything I'm doing, I find that using the volume controls built into Ubuntu is little but confusion. When the volume is around 100%, dropping it several increments has almost no effect on apparent volume, but when it's around 0%, the effect of one click of my mouse wheel is probably a good 3 decibels. I have observed this behavior on tens of different UC's, since I convert about one Ubuntu user a month (NE team contact). This has proven so frustrating to me that I tend to use the volume knob on my guitar amp ( mono audio :| ) instead of the volume indicator. What can I do to make my volume indicator behave properly until this is fixed? I want each volume increment to be one half or one third decibel. Is there a different piece of software I should use for system volume configuration perhaps?

• Scheme of work contract

  I'm in the process of setting up a (one man) company and got to a item on my list "contracts and insurance". I will primary be offering custom software development but may also offer some "open source solutions", install, configure / manage e.t.c. I'm not sure how to approach a contract with a potential customer. I want to be flexible and offer the customer rights over the product (when not using open source of course) but I obviously want / need to be able to reuse code, already written and any future work. Is this possible or is it just something that people do but strictly they shouldn't? Is there a standard freelancing / contacting developer agreement? Going to a lawyer I'm sure is an answer but a very expensive one! If not do you end up with a fresh contract with each job / client and lots of trips to solicitors?

  Estoy buscando una aplicacion de facturacion (tambien inventario, compras, clientes, proveedores, cuentas, etc) para pequeñas empresas, que se adaptade a las necesidades de Colombia, en google encontre varios ERP como openbravo y adempiere, pero aplicaciones muy grandes y dificiles de manejas, de hecho no puede hacerlas funcionar. Encontre un programa llamado Ubifactura, hecho para facturar en Colomabia, descarge los archivos de codigo fuente en java, pero no tengo ni idea de como ponerlo a funcionar, pues habla de eclipce, de un servsdor CVS, que no tengo ni idea de como poner a funcionar, necesito si alguien me puede ayudar a trabajar con estos archivos java, o me suguieran aplicacion de acuerdo a mis necesidades. La idea es bebeficiar a varias pequeñas empresas de mi pueblo con una aplicacion de estas, ni importa si en entorno windows o ubuntu, la idea es aportarles algo desde el software libre.   Considering the PCWorld review that came out in March: Free Android Apps Packed with Ads are Major Battery Drains ...Researchers from Purdue University in collaboration with Microsoft claim that third-party advertising in free smartphone apps can be responsible for as much as 65 percent to 75 percent of an app's energy consumption... Is there a best practice for integrating advert support into mobile applications, so as to not drain user battery too much? ...When you fire up Angry Birds on your Android phone, the researchers found that the core gaming component only consumes about 18 percent of total app energy. The biggest battery suck comes from the software powering third-party ads and analytics accounting for 45 percent of total app energy, according to the study... Has anyone invoked better ways of keeping away from the "3G Tail", as the report puts it? Is it better/possible to download a large set of adverts that are cached for a few hours, and using them to populate your ad space, to avoid constant use of the Wi-Fi/3G radios? Are there any best practices for the inclusion of adverts in mobile apps?

• Why does sound stop working after a while?

  I don't know how to reproduce this problem, because I don't regularly play music or sound. All I know is that, sometimes, I'll load a video (from youtube or from a local file) and there will be no sound. • Inexpensive Business Checks

  One of the most annoying things when setting up a business is paying the outrageous fees for business checks.  When starting out, rather than pay the $150 for the handful of computer printable checks, I had bought software that would create the checks for me.  But if you didn’t know, those little digits at the bottom of a check are magnetically encoded and requires special ink. Fortunately, my current bank has one of the best bill pay websites, so I have exclusively used it.  But since I recently had to open a new bank account, I went off in search of a cheap alternative for business checks.  A bit wary of some of the printers, I opted for TechChecks and was extremely surprised a few days later when my checks arrived in perfect condition.  (I recommend the diamond prismatic red-blue-green checks.  Beautiful and very professional looking.) It was perfect timing as well, since I now have to reorder some checks for another account.

• Developing a computer system based on Nand2Tetris [on hold]

  I recently finished a book called Nand2Tetris (nand2tetris.org) where I built my own computer system from scratch with its own machine language, assembly code, and a high level language called Jack that's translated to Hack binary. However, I feel like the "computer" I built throughout the course of this book (called the Hack computer) is a bit too simple for various reasons: 1) There are only two registers (D and A), whereas most computers have much more 2) Peripheral devices like mouse and keyboard have to be directly implemented 3) Peripheral devices use a pre-planned shared memory map to communicate with the CPU instead of using interrupts (which aren't covered at all) 4) Jack (the high level language) code doesn't compile to Assembly code directly, instead it compiles to an intermediate language, which in turn gets translated to Assembly. 5) There is no ROM or permanent storage device, everything is stored in RAM 6) No support for colored monitor, networking or sound I would like to build a more complicated computer system now based on what I've learned from Nand2Tetris. Does anyone know of any good resources or books to get started on this? (BTW by computer system I mean software that can emulate the hardware of a virtual computer with its own unique instruction set)

• Can I hook my xbox up to my Ubuntu PC

  My old xbox 360 won't eject disks, it makes a sound,but won't open. I want to play games, so I think I could hook it up to my PC running Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit and maybe I could use my PC's DVD drive. Can this work at all, or am I just crazy? There is an HDMI port on the back of my graphics card. If I can't do that, is there any software for Ubuntu that can rip the game off of a CD and put it on a flash drive? I have heard xbmcbuntu works great for gaming, but it doesn't work with my PC.
