• How to check if new version of Chrome is available?

  I am trying to build an extension that would notify a user when new version of Chrome is available. I tried to inspect network traffic when Chrome is checking for an update and it is sending a request to http://74.125.95.113/service/update2?w=3:{long_encoded_string} page that returns XML with information I need: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <gupdate xmlns="http://www.google.com/update2/response" protocol="2.0" server="prod"> <daystart elapsed_seconds="31272"/> <app appid="{8A69D345-D564-463C-AFF1-A69D9E530F96}" status="ok"> <updatecheck status="noupdate"/> <ping status="ok"/> </app> </gupdate> Besides sending {long_encoded_string} as URL parameter it is also sending some encoded cookie. Maybe someone familiar with Chrome build process can shed some light on those encoded strings and how to build them? Maybe there is another easier way (I have a feeling that string encoding is a dead end for me)?

  I'm working on adding a WCF services layer to my existing .NET application. This layer will be hosted in IIS and will be consumed by a variety of UIs, at least one of which will not use Microsoft technologies. I can make a Web service in WCF that is consumed by my .NET application. However, I'm concerned about things that work in the .NET world but not with other technologies. For example, simply throwing an exception from my WCF service works fine in .NET. But according to this article, one should approach exception handling with fault contracts to ensure compatibility with non-.NET consumers. The author labels this lack of foresight as The Fallacy of the .NET-Only World. Does anyone have any high level suggestions or links to articles that cover interoperability between WCF and non-.NET consumers? I realize I'm potentially working against the YAGNI principle. I'm only really looking to avoid things that will be incredibly difficult to overcome later when the developers of the non-.NET consumer report problems to me.

• Survey statistic diagram ideas

  Hey everyone, I've got some homework tasks in topic surveys and diagrams. The first task is to normalize the input of a survey, because the structure of the data is changing from time-to-time. So there are three types of surveys: static fields, where text is stored dynamic ones, where the user can select one option and multiselect fields, where the user can select multiple options So I'm not really a statistics guy, so I have really no idea what I can do with that incomming data. So the data I have is stored in an orbital XML file from there I can easily get how man times a survey was filled, and how many times a field was filled, so I can (for eg on a pie chart show the relation of filled or not filled). The second idea is to show the relation between the content of a multi option element using a bar chart or so. In case of the multi option elements I've got the idea to show data in implication of one option. But the question is, what could be shown? The other problem are the static elements (text fields and so). What data could be represented from a single field? The data in the XML field is collected from 2001 to 2005 So maybe I can work with the dates of the surveys, but as I said, i don't really know how to process the data, to collect as much data as possible.

• Distance between hyperplanes

  I'm trying to teach myself some machine learning, and have been using the MNIST database (http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/mnist/) do so. The author of that site wrote a paper in '98 on all different kinds of handwriting recognition techniques, available at http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/publis/pdf/lecun-98.pdf. The 10th method mentioned is a "Tangent Distance Classifier". The idea being that if you place each image in a (NxM)-dimensional vector space, you can compute the distance between two images as the distance between the hyperplanes formed by each where the hyperplane is given by taking the point, and rotating the image, rescaling the image, translating the image, etc. I can't figure out enough to fill in the missing details. I understand that most of these are indeed linear operators, so how does one use that fact to then create the hyperplane? And once we have a hyperplane, how do we take its distance with other hyperplanes?

  I've got a git repository with plenty of commits that are under no particular branch, I can git show them but when I try to list branches that contain them, it reports back nothing: I thought this is the dangling commits/tree issue (as a result of -D branch), so I pruned the repo, but I still see the case after that: $ git fetch origin $ git fsck --unreachable $ git fsck No output, nothing dangling (right?) $ git show 793db7f272ba4bbdd1e32f14410a52a412667042 commit 793db7f272ba4bbdd1e32f14410a52a412667042 Author: .. • Need a Javascript Expert, IE slow script

  I have a jQuery plugin running on my site that is executing very, very slowly in IE7/8 to the point that it throws a slow script warning to the user. It doesn't happen in any other browser, and I can't figure out what might be going on. If you go to this page: http://dev.xeetic.org/projects You'll see that there are 16 results on each page, and each one has a "flip" behavior attached, using the jQuery plugin "quickflip." Attaching this behavior is very slow in IE. If I reduce the result set to 8 or 4 per page, it's faster, but still very bogged down. I have contacted the author of the script with no success. I am willing to pay for a solution, if I'm allowed to offer such a thing on this site. Very desperate. Please help!

• What is a good architecture for a Lift-JPA application?

  I was wondering what is the best practice for a JPA model in Lift? I noticed that in the jpa demo application, there is just a Model object that is like a super object that does everything. I don't think this can be the most scalable approach, no? Is it is wise to still do the DAO pattern in Lift? For example, there's some code that looks a tad bloated and could be simplified across all model objects: Model.remove(Model.getReference(classOf[Author], someId)) Could be: AuthorDao.remove(someId) I'd appreciate any tips for setting up something that will work with the way Lift wants to work and is also easy to organize and maintain. Preferably from someone who has actually used JPA on a medium to large Lift site rather than just postulating what Spring does (we know how to do that) ;) The first phase of development will be around 30-40 tables, and will eventually get to over 100... we need a scalable, neat approach.

  I'm trying to make a simple flash application providing interface for taking tests as a high school assignment. One of the requirements is to use an XML file as data source.Now, having a List component bound to the XML file with questions consisting of data such as question body, question type (ie. single choice, multiple choice, open, image etc.) and possible answers (where applicable), I was wondering if I could add some additional data (and what is the best possible way to do so) to each question upon its transfer to the List component. I am trying to achieve two main goals with this: firstly, to mark the questions to which an answer has already been given, like with such code in ItemRenderer class: <s:Label color="{data.color}" text="{data.label}"/> where data.color would be set whenever the user gives an answer to a question. Secondly, while at it, I thought of such possibility as a great way to store answers given to particular questions. In this case, the Class of the answer object would have been Object, since there has to be many type of questions (where the answer could also be a Bitmap for example). This is a question of both how to do it and if it seems a good idea at all (and if no, if there is a better way?), because I am quite new to the whole Flash Builder and Flex thing and I am not really accustomed to all the possibilities and best practices. • Using Maven to build JAR from source in Subversion trunk

  There's a Java library that I would like to use in my project. My project uses Maven to pull in dependencies and it works great for everything except this one library. The problem is, this library never has releases. The author maintains the source in a Subversion repository and only makes changes in trunk. Is there a way I can tell Maven to Update (or check out) the library's source tree from Subversion Build it according to its POM Use the resulting jar as a dependency for this project Do this regularly (possibly at each build) For bonus points, mark which Subversion revision of that library I want to use Thanks!

  in this sample, two threads created; a worker thread created by BeginInvoke and an I/O completion thread created by SendAsync method. but another author in his UnsafeQueueNativeOverlapped example, don't recommend this. i want to use SendAsync or ...Async in an asp.net page and i want to use PageAsyncTask. however, its BeginEventHandler requires AsyncResult to be returned which SendAsync does not return. afaik, event based async pattern is the most recommended way so how could we call SendAsync or any ...Async methods without creating two threads and hurting the performance?

• Is it "legal" for C++ runtime to call terminate() when the C++ code is used inside some non-C++ prog

  In certain cases - especially when an exception escapes a destructor during stack unwinding - C++ runtime calls terminate() which must do something reasonable post-mortem and then exit the program. When a question "why so harsh" arises the answer is usually "there's nothing more reasonable to do in such error situations". That sounds reasonable if the whole program is in C++. Now what if the C++ code is in a library and the program that uses the library is not in C++? This happens quite often - for example I might have a native C++ COM component consumed by a .NET program. Once terminate() is called inside the component code the .NET program suddenly ends abnormally. The program author will first of all think "I don't care of C++, why the hell is this library make my program exit?" How do I handle the latter scenario when developing libraries in C++? Is it reasonable that terminate() unexpectedly ends the program? Is there a better way to handle such situations?

  My application data access layer is built using Spring and EclipseLink and I am currently trying to implement the following feature - Ability to switch the current/active persistence unit dynamically for a user. I tried various options and finally ended up doing the following. In the persistence.xml, declare multiple PUs. Create a class with as many EntityManagerFactory attributes as there are PUs defined. This will act as a factory and return the appropriate EntityManager based on my logic public class MyEntityManagerFactory { @PersistenceUnit(unitName="PU_1") private EntityManagerFactory emf1; @PersistenceUnit(unitName="PU_2") private EntityManagerFactory emf2; public EntityManager getEntityManager(int releaseId) { // Logic goes here to return the appropriate entityManeger } } My spring-beans xml looks like this.. <!-- First persistence unit --> <bean class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean" id="emFactory1"> <property name="persistenceUnitName" value="PU_1" /> </bean> <bean class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.JpaTransactionManager" id="transactionManager1"> <property name="entityManagerFactory" ref="emFactory1"/> </bean> <tx:annotation-driven transaction-manager="transactionManager1"/> The above section is repeated for the second PU (with names like emFactory2, transactionManager2 etc). My bean and interface looks like: @Remote public interface RecordService {... @Stateless(name="RecordServiceBean", mappedName="ejb/RecordServiceJNDI") public class RecordServiceImpl implements RecordService { @PersistenceContext(unitName="record_persistence_ctx") private EntityManager em;... and if i look in the server.log the portable jndi looks like: Portable JNDI names for EJB RecordServiceBean : [java:global/recordEjb/RecordServiceBean, java:global/recordEjb/RecordServiceBean!domain.service.RecordService]|#] and my facade: ...InitialContext ctx= new InitialContext(); try{ recordService = (RecordService) ctx.lookup("java:global/recordEjb/RecordServiceBean!domain.service.RecordService"); } catch(Throwable t){ System.out.println("ooops"); try{ recordService = (RecordService)ctx.lookup("java:global/recordEjb/RecordServiceImpl"); } catch(Throwable t2){ System.out.println("noooo!"); }... } and when the facade makes the first call this exception occur: javax.naming.NamingException: Lookup failed for 'java:global/recordEjb/RecordServiceBean!domain.service.RecordService' in SerialContext [Root exception is javax.naming.NamingException: ejb ref resolution error for remote business interfacedomain.service.RecordService [Root exception is java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: domain.service.RecordService]] and the second call: javax.naming.NamingException: Lookup failed for 'java:global/recordEjb/RecordServiceBean' in SerialContext [Root exception is javax.naming.NamingException: ejb ref resolution error for remote business interfacedomain.service.RecordService [Root exception is java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: domain.service.RecordService]] I have also tested to inject the bean with the @EJB-annotation: @EJB(name="RecordServiceBean") private RecordService recordService; But that doesnt work either. What have i missed? I tried with an ejb-jar.xml but that shouldnt be nessesary. Is there anyone who can tell me how to fix this problem?

• xmldocument and nested schemas

  Using c# and .net 3.5 I'm trying to validate an xml document against a schema that has includes. The schemas and there includes are as below Schema1.xsd - include another.xsd another.xsd - include base.xsd When i try to add the Schema1.xsd to the XmlDocument i get the following error. Type 'YesNoType' is not declared or is not a simple type. I believe i'm getting this error because the base.xsd file is not being included when i load the Schema1.xsd schema. I'm trying to use the XmlSchemaSet class and I'm setting the XmlResolver uri to the location of the schemas. • VS2010 - Using <Import /> to share properties between setup projects?
