  • what does the asterisk mean after a filename if you do ls -l

    - by James.Elsey
    I've done an ls -l inside a directory, and my files are displaying like this : james@nevada:~/development/tools/android-sdk-linux_86/tools$ ll total 9512 drwxr-xr-x 3 james james 4096 2010-05-07 19:48 ./ drwxr-xr-x 6 james james 4096 2010-08-21 20:43 ../ -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 341773 2010-05-07 19:47 adb* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 3636 2010-05-07 19:47 android* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 2382 2010-05-07 19:47 apkbuilder* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 3265 2010-05-07 19:47 ddms* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 89032 2010-05-07 19:47 dmtracedump* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 1940 2010-05-07 19:47 draw9patch* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 6886136 2010-05-07 19:47 emulator* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 478199 2010-05-07 19:47 etc1tool* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 1987 2010-05-07 19:47 hierarchyviewer* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 23044 2010-05-07 19:47 hprof-conv* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 1939 2010-05-07 19:47 layoutopt* drwxr-xr-x 4 james james 4096 2010-05-07 19:48 lib/ -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 16550 2010-05-07 19:47 mksdcard* -rw-r--r-- 1 james james 205851 2010-05-07 19:48 NOTICE.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 james james 33 2010-05-07 19:47 source.properties -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 1447936 2010-05-07 19:47 sqlite3* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 3044 2010-05-07 19:47 traceview* -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 187965 2010-05-07 19:47 zipalign* What does that asterisk mean? • Eclipse grinds to a halt when building workspace

    - by Chris Thompson
Hi all, This is a bit of a vague question because, frankly, I don't even know where to begin diagnosing the issue. My eclipse (Galileo) installation grinds to a complete halt when it's building the workspace -- to the point where I can't even type. I know the Android SDK I have installed is a major culprit because I can watch the memory usage go through the roof (through the built-in heap monitor) when the Android SDK content loader starts up. Every time I save a file though, the program just stops. The message at the bottom of the screen says Building workspace (74%) and sits there for about 30 or so seconds before completing and returning the performance to normal. I have a few other plugins installed (Maven, SVN, etc) but I'm assuming the main issue is Android. Has anybody had similar issues or any luck correcting this sort of problem? If there's anymore information you think would be helpful, just let me know...I didn't want to do a core dump on this question... I'm running it on Windows 7 64-bit for what it's worth. Thanks! Chris

  • Unzipping archives, preserving folder hierarchy

    - by Hydrangea
I've got a problem and am not sure what it is, but hope someone can help me think this through because this has me stumped. Backstory: I wrote a Java app (Android) that unzips some zip files downloaded from the network. Until now, this was working great. Then, this week, the archives that I'm creating on my pc (in Ubuntu 12.04) unzip on the Android phone into a flat hierarchy instead of preserving the folders. I'm creating the archives the same way (right-click on folder compress) but even though my old archives (created in 10.04) still unzip as expected, the new ones don't. On Ubuntu, the new zip files look the same to me as the old ones. When unzipped on my pc the folders in these new archives are restored the same as the old ones... it's the Android app that extracts the old ones fine and the new ones flat. What I really want to know, though, is what the difference between the archives is. Question: How could one determine why one zip archive would be extracted with folder hierarchy preserved, when an identical one (to all appearances on Ubuntu 12.04) is extracted with no hierarchy? Are there different ways in which a .zip file can "have" folders, but Ubuntu doesn't distinguish between them?

  • How to set up Windows 7 Professional as a NAS

    - by Enyalius
I searched and didn't find any answers, so please forgive me if this is a repeat. Anyway, I have an older computer that I'm using as an HTPC, and I was hoping that I could use it as a NAS/multimedia server, as well. My primary uses would include accessing content on my PS3 (same LAN), accessing content from other computers on my home network and (if I can) accessing content from my Android phone over the internet. I have used SubSonic to stream music to my Android phone and other computers before, but I would really like to find a way to do this natively if possible. I know that I can buy external hard disk cases that can plug in the USB port of my router, that I can get a Drobo or other network storage solution, but I would really just rather not spend the money (especially considering that I already have a computer that I should be able to use). Hardware involved: Apple AirPort Extreme base station router (most recent revision) Home Theater Personal Computer: Core 2 Duo @ 2.4GHz, 8GB DDR2 RAM, ~3.5TB hard drive space Sony Playstaiton 3 Thin 120GB HTC Thunderbolt (I have 4G coverage) rooted and running Android 2.2.1 Various Apple laptops Various Windows 7 desktops/laptops Thanks in advance! Note- I have looked at open source NAS software but I would like to preserve the Windows Media Center functionality in Windows 7, so other NAS software is not an option for me currently. .

  • Upgrade or replace?

    - by Felix
My current PC is about four years old, although I have made upgrades to it throughout its existence. The current specs are: (old) Intel Pentium D 2.80Ghz (32K L1 / 2M L2), Gigabyte 945GCMX-S2 motherboard (old) 2.5GB DDR2 (slot0: 512MB @ 533Mhz; slot1: 2GB @ 667Mhz) (new) HIS Radeon HD 4670 - I think this is limited by the motherboard not supporting PCIe 2.0 (?) (old) WD Caviar 160GB - pretty slow (new) WD Caviar Black 640GB (if any more specs are relevant, let me know and I'll add them) Now, on to my question. I've been having performance issues lately, both in video games and in intensive applications. A couple of examples: Android application development (running Eclipse and the Android emulator) is painfully slow (on Linux). I only realized this when, at my new job as an Android dev, both tools are MUCH quicker. (I'm not sure what CPU I have there) The guys at my new job got me NFS Hot Pursuit, in which I barely get like 5-10FPS, even with graphics options turned all the way down My guess is that the bottleneck in my system is my CPU, so I'm thinking of upgrading to a Quad Core i5 + new motherboard + 4GB DDR3 (or more, 'cause I know you'll all jump and say 8GB minimum). Now: Is that a good idea? Is my CPU really a bottleneck, or is the whole system too old and I should replace it? I run Windows 7 on the old, 160GB HDD (which is on IDE, by the way). Could this slow down games as well? Should I get a new drive for Windows if I want to play new games? I know nothing about power supplies. Could that be a problem / will it be a problem if I upgrade to an i5? How come DiRT2 works on full graphics settings (pretty amazing graphics by the way) and NFS Hot Pursuit pulls only 5-10FPS?

  • Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Superman

    - by Pinal Dave
I enjoyed comparing developers to Spiderman so much, that I have decided to continue the trend and encourage some of my favorite people (developers) with another favorite superhero – Superman.  Superman is probably the most famous superhero – and one of the most inspiring. Everyone has their own favorite, but Superman has been the longest enduring of all comic book characters.  Clark Kent has inspired multiple movie series, TV shows, books, cartoons, and costumes.  Superman’s enduring popularity has been attributed to his superhuman strength, integrity, dedication to good, and his humility in keeping his identity a secret. So how are developers like Superman? Well, read on my list of reasons. Secret Identities They have secret identities.  I’m not saying that all developers wear thick glasses and go by an alias like “Clark Kent.”  But developers certainly work in the background, making sure everything runs smoothly, often without recognition.  Like Superman, when they have done their job right, no one knows they were there. Working Alone You don’t have to work alone.  Superman doesn’t have a sidekick like Robin or Bat Girl, but he is a major player in the Justice League.  Developers have amazing skills, and they shouldn’t be afraid to unite those skills to solve some of the world’s major problems (like slow networks). Daily Inspiration Developers are inspiring.  Clark Kent works at The Daily Planet, Metropolis’ newspaper, which is lucky because he can keep some of the publicity Superman inspires under wraps.  Developers might go unnoticed sometimes, but when people hear about some of the tasks they accomplish on a daily basis, it inspires awe. Discover Your Superpowers You have to discover your superpowers.  Clark Kent didn’t just wake up one morning with the full understanding that he could fly, leap tall buildings in a single bound, and was stronger than a speeding locomotive.  He slowly discovered these powers (after a few comic book-worthy misunderstandings!).  Developers are always learning and growing as well.  You probably won’t wake up with super powers, either, but years of practice and continuing education can get you close. Every Day is a New Day The story continues.  The Superman comic books are still being printed, and have been in print since 1938.  There have been two TV series, (one, Smallville, was on TV for ten seasons) and multiple cartoon adaptations.  There have been multiple movies, with many different actors.  A new reboot came out last year, and another is set to premier in 2016.   So, developers, when you are having a bad day or a problem seems unsolvable – remember, the story will continue!  There is always tomorrow. I hope you are all enjoying reading about developers-as-superheroes as much as I am enjoying writing about them.  Please tell me how else developers are like Superheroes in the comments – especially if you know any developers who are faster than a speeding bullet and can leap tall buildings in a single bound. • How do I configure WakeOnUSB properly?

    - by wishi
How do I configure Wake-On-USB properly on a 10.04 or 10.10 Ubuntu (2.6.36 and higher if needed)? (Wake-on-USB is when the computer is asleep and for example a USB Keyboard event wakes up the machine!) The notebook is an Acer Aspire Timeline X 1830T. I don't know in which way the Linux Kernel supports the controllers. There are different ways to approach this, for example /proc/acpi/wakeup... or UDEV... or something with HAL? /proc/acpi/wakeup shows every device in S4, but I need S3. Device S-state Status Sysfs node P0P2 S4 *disabled PEGP S4 *disabled P0P1 S0 *disabled pci:0000:00:1e.0 EHC1 S4 *disabled pci:0000:00:1d.0 USB1 S4 *enabled USB2 S4 *disabled USB3 S4 *disabled USB4 S4 *disabled EHC2 S4 *disabled pci:0000:00:1a.0 USB5 S4 *disabled USB6 S4 *disabled USB7 S4 *disabled HDEF S0 *disabled pci:0000:00:1b.0 RP01 S5 *disabled pci:0000:00:1c.0 PXSX S5 *disabled pci:0000:01:00.0 RP02 S0 *disabled pci:0000:00:1c.1 PXSX S5 *disabled pci:0000:02:00.0 RP03 S0 *disabled PXSX S5 *disabled RP04 S0 *disabled PXSX S5 *disabled RP05 S0 *disabled PXSX S5 *disabled RP07 S0 *disabled PXSX S5 *disabled RP08 S0 *disabled PXSX S5 *disabled GLAN S0 *disabled PEG3 S4 *disabled PEG5 S4 *disabled PEG6 S4 *disabled SLPB S3 *enabled S4, which is Suspend-To-Disk afaik... doesn't seem to work either if I echo USB1 into the wakeup table. It just sets an S4 flag. can I get the USB ports in S3? I want to make the machine wakeup from Suspend-To-Ram (S3, ACPI standard) in case a key on my external keyboard is pressed. It only wakes up if a key on the internal Laptop keyboard is pressed... from Suspend To Ram. It seems if I plug in a USB mouse, that the USB port isn't even powered. I have no BIOS option to change this. • SQL Server deadlocks between select/update or multiple selects

    - by RobW
All of the documentation on SQL Server deadlocks talks about the scenario in which operation 1 locks resource A then attempts to access resource B and operation 2 locks resource B and attempts to access resource A. However, I quite often see deadlocks between a select and an update or even between multiple selects in some of our busy applications. I find some of the finer points of the deadlock trace output pretty impenetrable but I would really just like to understand what can cause a deadlock between two single operations. Surely if a select has a read lock the update should just wait before obtaining an exclusive lock and vice versa? This is happening on SQL Server 2005 not that I think this makes a difference.

  • What's in your .emacs?

    - by A. Rex
I've switched computers a few times recently, and somewhere along the way I lost my .emacs. I'm trying to build it up again, but while I'm at it, I thought I'd pick up other good configurations that other people use. So, if you use Emacs, what's in your .emacs? Mine is pretty barren right now, containing only: Global font-lock-mode! (global-font-lock-mode 1) My personal preferences with respect to indentation, tabs, and spaces. Use cperl-mode instead of perl-mode. A shortcut for compilation. What do you think is useful?

  • FileStream to save file then immediately unlock in C# ?

    - by aron
Hello, I have this code that saves a pdf file. FileStream fs = new FileStream(SaveLocation, FileMode.Create); fs.Write(result.DocumentBytes, 0, result.DocumentBytes.Length); fs.Flush(); fs.Close(); It works fine. However sometimes it does not release the lock right away and that causes file locking exceptions with functions run after this one run. Is there a ideal way to release the file lock right after the fs.Close() thanks!

  • Synchronization requirements for FileStream.(Begin/End)(Read/Write)

    - by Doug McClean
Is the following pattern of multi-threaded calls acceptable to a .Net FileStream? Several threads calling a method like this: ulong offset = whatever; // different for each thread byte[] buffer = new byte[8192]; object state = someState; // unique for each call, hence also for each thread lock(theFile) { theFile.Seek(whatever, SeekOrigin.Begin); IAsyncResult result = theFile.BeginRead(buffer, 0, 8192, AcceptResults, state); } if(result.CompletedSynchronously) { // is it required for us to call AcceptResults ourselves in this case? // or did BeginRead already call it for us, on this thread or another? } Where AcceptResults is: void AcceptResults(IAsyncResult result) { lock(theFile) { int bytesRead = theFile.EndRead(result); // if we guarantee that the offset of the original call was at least 8192 bytes from // the end of the file, and thus all 8192 bytes exist, can the FileStream read still // actually read fewer bytes than that? // either: if(bytesRead != 8192) { Panic("Page read borked"); } // or: // issue a new call to begin read, moving the offsets into the FileStream and // the buffer, and decreasing the requested size of the read to whatever remains of the buffer } } I'm confused because the documentation seems unclear to me. For example, the FileStream class says: Any public static members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe. But the documentation for BeginRead seems to contemplate having multiple read requests in flight: Multiple simultaneous asynchronous requests render the request completion order uncertain. Are multiple reads permitted to be in flight or not? Writes? Is this the appropriate way to secure the location of the Position of the stream between the call to Seek and the call to BeginRead? Or does that lock need to be held all the way to EndRead, hence only one read or write in flight at a time? I understand that the callback will occur on a different thread, and my handling of state, buffer handle that in a way that would permit multiple in flight reads. Further, does anyone know where in the documentation to find the answers to these questions? Or an article written by someone in the know? I've been searching and can't find anything. Relevant documentation: FileStream class Seek method BeginRead method EndRead IAsyncResult interface

  • Updating Lucene index from two different threads in a web application

    - by Jimmy
Hi, I've a .net web application which uses Lucene.net for company search functionality. When registered users add a new company,it is saved to database and also gets indexed in Lucene based company search index in real time. When adding company in Lucene index, how do I handle use case of two or more logged-in users posting a new company at the same time? Also, will both these companies get indexed without any file lock, lock time out, etc. related issues? Would appreciate if i could help with code as well. Thanks.

  • FreeRTOS Sleep Mode hazards while using MSP430f5438

    - by michael
Hi, I wrote an an idle hook shown here void vApplicationIdleHook( void ) { asm("nop"); P1OUT &= ~0x01;//go to sleep lights off! LPM3;// LPM Mode - remove to make debug a little easier... asm("nop"); } That should cause the LED to turn off, and MSP430 to go to sleep when there is nothing to do. I turn the LED on during some tasks. I also made sure to modify the sleep mode bit in the SR upon exit of any interrupt that could possibly wake the MCU (with the exception of the scheduler tick isr in portext.s43. The macro in iar is __bic_SR_register_on_exit(LPM3_bits); // Exit Interrupt as active CPU However, it seems as though putting the MCU to sleep causes some irregular behavior. The led stays on always, although when i scope it, it will turn off for a couple instructions cycles when ever i wake the mcu via one of the interrupts (UART), and then turn back on. If I comment out the LPM3 instruction, things go as planned. The led stays off for most of the time and only comes on when a task is running. I am using a MSP4f305438 Any ideas?

  • Dictionary is returning false on ContainsKey after item is added

    - by Karel Frajtak
I have a dictionary declared as follows IDictionary<string, object> _objectIds = new Dictionary<string, object>(); I was experiencing some problems with it and it discovered that the instance returned false as a result of ContainsKey method and from the watch window I was sure that the item was there. So I created helper method private bool IdsContainsKey(string key) { lock (syncObject) { lock (_objectIds) { if (_objectIds.ContainsKey(key)) return true; // A if (_objectIds.ContainsKey(key)) return true; // B return _objectIds.ContainsKey(key); // C } } } During my debugging session I run into situation when the method exited in place B and sometimes I made to C returning true. Can anybody help me? Thanks.

  • Synchronized IEnumerator<T>

    - by Dan Bryant
I'm putting together a custom SynchronizedCollection<T> class so that I can have a synchronized Observable collection for my WPF application. The synchronization is provided via a ReaderWriterLockSlim, which, for the most part, has been easy to apply. The case I'm having trouble with is how to provide thread-safe enumeration of the collection. I've created a custom IEnumerator<T> nested class that looks like this: private class SynchronizedEnumerator : IEnumerator<T> { private SynchronizedCollection<T> _collection; private int _currentIndex; internal SynchronizedEnumerator(SynchronizedCollection<T> collection) { _collection = collection; _collection._lock.EnterReadLock(); _currentIndex = -1; } #region IEnumerator<T> Members public T Current { get; private set;} #endregion #region IDisposable Members public void Dispose() { var collection = _collection; if (collection != null) collection._lock.ExitReadLock(); _collection = null; } #endregion #region IEnumerator Members object System.Collections.IEnumerator.Current { get { return Current; } } public bool MoveNext() { var collection = _collection; if (collection == null) throw new ObjectDisposedException("SynchronizedEnumerator"); _currentIndex++; if (_currentIndex >= collection.Count) { Current = default(T); return false; } Current = collection[_currentIndex]; return true; } public void Reset() { if (_collection == null) throw new ObjectDisposedException("SynchronizedEnumerator"); _currentIndex = -1; Current = default(T); } #endregion } My concern, however, is that if the Enumerator is not Disposed, the lock will never be released. In most use cases, this is not a problem, as foreach should properly call Dispose. It could be a problem, however, if a consumer retrieves an explicit Enumerator instance. Is my only option to document the class with a caveat implementer reminding the consumer to call Dispose if using the Enumerator explicitly or is there a way to safely release the lock during finalization? I'm thinking not, since the finalizer doesn't even run on the same thread, but I was curious if there other ways to improve this. EDIT After thinking about this a bit and reading the responses (particular thanks to Hans), I've decided this is definitely a bad idea. The biggest issue actually isn't forgetting to Dispose, but rather a leisurely consumer creating deadlock while enumerating. I now only read-lock long enough to get a copy and return the enumerator for the copy.

  • Tool to monitor HTTP traffic

    - by Samuh
I have an application on my iPhone which sends out Http requests; is it possible to look into the HTTP stream using some tool?? I use standalone version of (IEInspector's) HttpAnalyzer tool on my windows PC to monitor HTTP traffic from all processes including the apps on Android phone (thanks to android debug bridge interface). Is there a similar tool for OS X that I can use for iPhone apps? Is this even allowed? Thanks in advance.

  • Comparison of SSL Certificates

    - by Walley
My web application most definately needs an SSL certificate I was looking into godaddy's: http://www.godaddy.com/ssl/ssl-certificates.aspx The standard doesn't appear to have the lock in the URL bar, which a lot of users might not consider secure... How true is this? The Standard has https:// obviously in the bar, but is that enough to persuade users to want to enter in confidential information?? I'd appreciate any experience anyone has had with this. or any alterates they've dealt with. Is $100/year really the going rate for an SSL cert that has the lock in the url bar? Thanks SO!

  • Do condition variables still need a mutex if you're changing the checked value atomically?

    - by Joseph Garvin
Here is the typical way to use a condition variable: // The reader(s) lock(some_mutex); if(protected_by_mutex_var != desired_value) some_condition.wait(some_mutex); unlock(some_mutex); // The writer lock(some_mutex); protected_by_mutex_var = desired_value; unlock(some_mutex); some_condition.notify_all(); But if protected_by_mutex_var is set atomically by say, a compare-and-swap instruction, does the mutex serve any purpose (other than that pthreads and other APIs require you to pass in a mutex)? Is it protecting state used to implement the condition? If not, is it safe then to do this?: // The writer protected_by_mutex_var = desired_value; some_condition.notify_all(); With the writer never directly interacting with the reader's mutex? If so, is it even necessary that different readers use the same mutex?

  • Emacs on Windows: how to protect built-in el files from being accidentally edited

    - by RamyenHead
On Linux, they are all read only, so no problem. But on MS Windows, what happens is like this: I get curious about the definition of the command isearch-forward, I type C-h f isearch-forward and click on the link isearch.el from the help to get to the definition of the function, and while I am reading its definition, I press C-h or C-c many times, but I set Caps Lock as another Ctrl key, so sometimes it happens that I release Caps Lock too early, in which case C-h or C-c becomes inserting h or c, sometimes I notice that and undo it, but sometimes I don't notice it, and I even save them all with C-x s. What is a good way to protect the built-in el files from me on MS Windows?

  • Is SynchronizationContext.Post() threadsafe?

    - by cyclotis04
This is a pretty basic question, and I imagine that it is, but I can't find any definitive answer. Is SynchronizationContext.Post() threadsafe? I have a member variable which holds the main thread's context, and _context.Post() is being called from multiple threads. I imagine that Post() could be called simultaneously on the object. Should I do something like lock (_contextLock) _context.Post(myDelegate, myEventArgs); or is that unnecessary? Edit: MSDN states that "Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe." Should I keep my lock(), then?
