• A balanced binary search tree which is also a heap

  I'm looking for a data structure where each element in it has two keys. With one of them the structure is a BST and looking at the other one, data structure is a heap. With a little search, I found a structure called Treap. It uses the heap property with a random distribution on heap keys to make the BST balanced! What I want is a Balanced BST, which can be also a heap. The BST in Treap could be unbalanced if I insert elements with heap Key in the order of my choice. Is there such a data structure?

• How do I build a specialized JQuery Timer

  I have an asp.net page where two grid views are available showing current stock market price updates. I need to update these two grid views every 20 seconds. So I was thinking of using JQuery to do this job. What I need is a timer which will fire every 20 seconds, send an ajax request to the servers, bring the order lists from the server using json and then update those two grid views. If a request to the server is still being served 20 seconds after it is fired, then I want the old one to be aborted without causing any trouble. I already know how to bring objects using json. I just need to figure out how to send a request every 20 seconds and cancel a request if it is still being server for 20 seconds.

So in order to apply thames or colour schemes what should i do? • to get columns from Excel files using Apache POI??

  Hi, In order to do some statistical analysis I need to extract values in a column of an Excel sheet. I have been using the Apache POI package to read from Excel files, and it works fine when one needs to iterate over rows. However I couldn't find anything about getting columns neither in the API (link text) nor through google searching. As I need to get max and min values of different columns and generate random numbers using these values, so without picking up individual columns, the only other option is to iterate over rows and columns to get the values and compare one by one, which doesn't sound all that time-efficient. Any ideas on how to tackle this problem? Thanks,

• make mongrel_rails (localhost:3000) visible to a virtual machine

  I develop rails in ubuntu and i just set up a virtualbox windows xp virtual machine for IE testing. I'd like to be able to run mongrel_rails in ubuntu and then jump into the vm to check it out, so i can jump back, make a change, jump into the vm again, reload the page and test it, etc. Is this possible? In this sort of situation in the past i've had to set up an apache server on my dev machine and run mongrel under that, in order to get an externally visible (ie visible to my local network) ip address that i then paste into the address bar of IE in the vm. Is this really necessary? Is there a simpler way? Can i do something with my /etc/hosts or sites-available files to just make up some arbitrary network address which points to localhost:3000 in ubuntu? Or something? thanks, max

  Hello, Just look for strategies that have been successful in rendering hierarchies that represent inheritance structures using SL3/4 TreeViews. I need to render certain nodes differently than others, depending upon what kind of container they are (a choice between things, or simply a list of related things, etc.) So far, I've been very successful with the DataTemplate route: I've been able to use a technique described in Ted Glaza's post "Easy DataTemplateSelectors in Silverlight" (you may have retrieve a Google cache of this page). SO what I'm trying to discover is something on the order of a StyleSelector, not a DataTemplateSelector. I'm considering leveraging my current implementations of Glaza's pattern of selector objects to somehow detect the node type and set the ItemContainerStyle there, but it doesn't seem clear right now. • Spring-webflow error popup tweak

  There is a link in a spring-webflow2 based application which start different flows. Flows are shown in popup (popup=true). If the session is expired or server is unavailable, the spring-webflow shows small empty popup with "Ajax Request Error" tooltip shown on mouse over. Is it possible to tweak the popup in order to give the user an ability to either re-login or to just close the popup and retry the request? EDIT: Or maybe some ideas how to force Spring-Dojo to make a redirect to login page?

• Rails - Active Record :conditions overrides :select

  I have a fairly large model and I want to retrieve only a select set of fields for each record in order to keep the JSON string I am building small. Using :select with find works great but my key goal is to use conditional logic with an associated model. Is the only way to do this really with a lamda in a named scope? I'm dreading that perhaps unnecessarily but I'd like to understand if there is a way to make the :select work with a condition. This works: @sites = Site.find :all, :select => 'id,foo,bar' When I try this: @sites = Site.find :all, :select => 'id,foo,bar', :include => [:relatedmodel], :conditions => ["relatedmodel.type in (?)", params[:filters]] The condition works but each record includes all of the Site attributes which makes my JSON string way way too large.   I have four objects - for the sake of arguments, let say that they are the following letters: A B C D I need to calculate the number of variations that can be made for these under the following two conditions: No repetition Objects are position agnostic Taking the above, this means that with a four object sequence, I can have only one sequence that matches the criteria (since order is not considered for being unique): ABCD There are four variations for a three object combination from the four object pool: ABC, ABD, ACD, and BCD There are six variations for a two object combination from the four object pool: AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, and CD And the most simple one, if taken on at a time: A, B, C, and D I swear that this was something covered in school, many, many years ago - and probably forgotten since I didn't think I would use it. :-) I am anticipating that factorials will come into play, but just trying to force an equation is not working.   I'm trying to solve one of the Project Euler problems. As a consequence, I need an algorithm that will help me find all possible partitions of a set, in any order. For instance, given the set 2 3 3 5: 2 | 3 3 5 2 | 3 | 3 5 2 | 3 3 | 5 2 | 3 | 3 | 5 2 5 | 3 3 and so on. Pretty much every possible combination of the members of the set. I've searched the net of course, but haven't found much that's directly useful to me, since I speak programmer-ese not advanced-math-ese. Can anyone help me out with this? I can read pretty much any programming language, from BASIC to Haskell, so post in whatever language you wish.

• Block all other input to an application and control it from a wrapper in Java

  I have a windows application which has a complex GUI that I would like to hide from users. In order to do this, I would like to create a wrapper with an extremely simple interface that overlays this application and automates a number of actions when a user clicks a single button on the wrapper. (I hope "wrapper" is the proper term.) Is it possible to use Java to block input to the underlying application so that users cannot inadvertently mess up the automation? How would I go about this? Also, how can I automate key presses and clicks to the application without hijacking the mouse? Is this possible in Java? I have looked at java.awt.Robot, but it appears to hijack the mouse. I have also looked at AutoIT, but it too hijacks the mouse and does not integrate with Java. Neither of these options seem powerful enough for what I need, but I do not know how else to proceed.

• Different Paramater Value Results In Slow Query

  I have an sproc in SQL Server 2008. It basically builds a string, and then runs the query using EXEC(): SELECT * FROM [dbo].[StaffRequestExtInfo] WITH(nolock,readuncommitted) WHERE [NoteDt] < @EndDt AND [NoteTypeCode] = @RequestTypeO AND ([FNoteDt] >= @StartDt AND [FNoteDt] <= @EndDt) AND [FStaffID] = @StaffID AND [FNoteTypeCode]<>@RequestTypeC ORDER BY [LocName] ASC,[NoteID] ASC,[CNoteDt] ASC All but @RequestTypeO and @RequestTypeF are passed in as sproc parameters. The other two are built from a parameter into local variables. Normally, the query runs under one second. However, for one particular value of @StaffID, the execution plan is different and about 30x slower. In either case, the amount of data returned is generally the same, but execution time goes way up. I tried to recompile the sproc. I also tried to "copy" @StaffID into a local @LocalStaffID. Neither approach made any difference. Any ideas?

• How to make one ASP.NET MVC site "derive" from another.

  My question is similar to "ASP.NET 2 projects to share same files", but with an ASP.NET MVC slant. Basically, we have two sites, one being based mostly on the other (roughly 90% views, controllers, images, in the second are identical to the first). However, in some cases, the views may be different, or a controller in the second site may be different to the first. Are there any simple ways of achieving this in ASP.NET MVC? So far, we've looked at using linked files to have two totally seperate projects where the second project shares the files it needs from the first. One problem with this approach is that most pages in the second project don't literally exist in the virtual directory, it makes debugging a pain - you have to publish in order to generate the files so you can debug. Does anyone have any better approaches, or ways this approach can be simplified?

  Hi, I'm attempting to set some custom routes in Kohana v2. What I'm looking for is some method that allow the system to : follow a pre-defined name to it's related root; redirect the non-matched url's into another controller; To give you a more clear view over the problem, I want the first url parameter to be associated to certain pages (contacts, home, services, about us, etc), and those urls who doesn't match the previous pages would be routed into a controller called products, in order to determine if the first url parameter regards a product name. Here's a sample of what I have : $config['_default'] = 'home'; $config['([a-zA-Z]+)'] = 'products/showcat/$1'; What am I missing here? Thanks in advance!

• concatenating results from SQL query and NULL columns

  I need to concatenate several columns of a table into a single value, then show that value in an asp dropdownlist. The SQL code I'm issuing is as follows: SELECT UserID, CustomerNum, UserName + ' - ' + UserAddress + ',' + UserCity + ' ' + UserState AS UserInfo FROM Users WHERE (CustomerNum = @CustomerNum) ORDER BY UserName I then set 'UserInfo' as the text field in the dropdownlist. This generally works, except occasionally one of the columns in the database is null (for example, UserState). When that happens, the entire concatenation is null, and I get an empty entry in the dropdownlist. Is there something in SQLServer that will allow me to ignore those NULL results, or will I have to code something up in the DataBind event? Thanks

• How to handle customers with multiple addresses in CakePHP

  I'm putting together a system to track customer orders. Each order will have three addresses; a Main contact address, a billing address and a shipping address. I do not want to have columns in my orders table for the three addresses, I'd like to reference them from a separate table and have some way to enumerate the entry so I can determine if the addressing is main, shipping or billing. Does it make sense to create a column in the address table for AddressType and enumerate that or create another table - AddressTypes - that defines the address enumeration and link to that table? I have found other questions that touch on this topic and that is where I've taken my model. The problem I'm having is taking that into the cakePHP convention. I've been struggling to internalize the direction OneToMany relationships are formed - the way the documentation states feels backwards to me. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

  In order to prevent command windows from popping up during installation I am using the WIX built-in custom action CAQuietExec. First I define the command line: <CustomAction Id="A01" Property="QtExecCmdLine" Value="&quot;MyExe.exe&quot; /password [PASSWORD]" /> NB: The PASSWORD property is defined as Hidden. This prevents the Windows installer from writing the property value to the log. Then I call into the embedded WIX extension: <CustomAction Id="A02" BinaryKey="WixCA" DllEntry="CAQuietExec" Execute="immediate" Return="ignore" /> This works fine. However, when I go to the temp folder and open up the MSI log I see the following entry: CAQuietExec: "C:\Program Files\MyExe.exe" /password INCLEARTEXT I.e. the password is displayed in clear text and not hidden. How do I prevent the CAQuietExec from logging the password in clear text?

• Gluing tiles together using imagemagick's montage command

  This seems like it might be a reasonably common question, so I'm going to ask it using as many keywords as I can think of! I have a bunch of (well, nine) tile jpegs, with standard tile filenames. Each jpeg is 220x175 pixels: (top row) tile_1_0_0.jpg tile_1_1_0.jpg tile_1_2_0.jpg (middle row) tile_1_0_1.jpg tile_1_1_1.jpg tile_1_2_1.jpg (bottom row) tile_1_0_2.jpg tile_1_1_2.jpg tile_1_2_2.jpg How can I use imagemagick/montage to 'glue' or join them all together to make a single, coherent image? I don't want to resize them at all, so I guess the final image should be 660x525. That would be montage with no framing, shadowing, bordering, etc - just the nine original images, glued together to make a single jpeg. I know it should be something along these lines, but I'm struggling with getting the order and sizing right: montage +frame +shadow +label -tile 3x3 -geometry <options> *.jpg joined.jpg

• How to read log4j output to a web page?

  I have a web page, used for admin purposes, which runs a task (image fetching from a remote site). In order to be able to debug the task using the browser only, no ssh etc, I'd like to be able to read all log output from the executing thread and spit it out to the web page. The task boils down to: Changing log level for current thread at the beginning of the call and restore when the call is done. Reading all log output by current thread and storing it in a string. So in pseudocode my execute() method would look like this: (I'm using struts2) public String execute() throws Exception { turnLoggingLevelToDebugOnlyForThisThread() ... do stuff... restoreLoggingLevelForThisThread() String logs = readAllLogsByThisThread(); } Can this be done with log4j? I'm using tomcat, struts2, log4j and slf4j.
