  • realtime window remote connection?

    Hi, I am trying to control a desktop (HTPC) using my laptop. I currently use Teamviewer, but it is pretty slow. I used to use window remote desktop connection and it was pretty fast. The problem with window remote desktop connection is that it does not support realtime. By "Realtime", I mean it does not display what I am doing on the computer being controlled. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking of first getting a faster hard drive, but I'd like to be able to run some sort of profiling software to tell me what the bottleneck is when rendering video.     We have a situation where we have a SSH-server running on a Windows host which we then use an ssh client in e.g. an xterm (or another vt100 compatible client) to connect to, and then get a DOS prompt (but without any GUI at all). Now we need to have a good editor on the Windows machine which will work out of the box in this scenario. I do not have any experience with this, so I do not know where to start. Suggestions?

  • How can I perform a syntax check on an .htaccess file in a shared hosting environment?

    I have a build script (Perl) that modifies the .htaccess file when I deploy my applications. As a double-check I'd like to be able to perform some sort of syntax checking on the created .htaccess file. I am familiar with the idea of using apachectl -t however, I am in a shared hosting environment and because of file access restrictions I cannot read certain configuration files specified by the sysadmins. Apachectl simply will not work in this regard. Ideas or suggestions welcome.

  • What program will monitor the chords I'm playing through my MIDI keyboard live?

    Leaving Cubase 5 out of the picture, when I use Reason 4.0 to compose something, I need a program running that will monitor the chords I'm pressing WHILE I'm pressing them. See, I'm a new keyboardist, and a thing like this will improve my accuracy by 100%. At one point, I'll stop needing such programs even, but for now, I'd REALLY like to have something of that sort.   • How do I autorun applications after mounting a TrueCrypt container?

    I would like my TrueCrypt virtual drive to act as a newly inserted USB drive or CD/DVD by executing commands in the partition's autorun.inf file. I've read several suggestions online including creating a .bat file or installing software so Windows will think this is a CD, but I'd like to know the easiest and least intrusive way to pull it off. i.e. I want to keep from installing or messing with the host computer as much as possible, as this is intended to be a fully portable drive.

  • I have problems printing from gedit in windows

    Gedit in linux works like a champ. For me, in two installations Gedit in Windows xp works well except that it will not print properly on HP laser jets or toshibas laser printers. It will make a 90 page project out of two pages of text composed in gedit. It puts one or two confused lines of text at the top of a sheet and then ejects the page. Any suggestions? jac

  • What super-calculator do you use?

    Windows Calculator can switch into a "Scientific" mode, getting more math and logical operators, but that's not good enough. I know there are tons of features its missing, such as the ones we see in the Windows 7 calc, or simply making things more visual. Its been years and I still haven't found a good calculator replacement. Suggestions? And hopefully your calc replaces MS Calc when I press the dedicated "calculator key" on my Keyboard, so I don't have to hunt around for a shortcut.

  • Computer doesn't start up apart from lights/noise

    One of my computers doesn't boot up or at least nothing appears on my screen (not even the bios). It still makes some noise and the lights stay on, but not any beeping like I have heard computer make when start up fails. Before this happened my screen would occasionally have a strange image appear than crash (usually around startup). It would also sometimes just freeze without the image appearing. Any suggestions for how I can attempt to identify the problem?

  • xp stop error 50 page fault in non paged area

    I have a laptop that fails to boot with the BSOD error: "page_fault_in_non_paged_area" STOP: 0x00000050 (0xEC6B738D, 0x00000000, 0x8649308C, 0x00000000) The laptop has 2 memory DIMMs. I removed each DIMM one at a time and the error remained with just one DIMM installed. I have run spinrite 6.0 on the hard drive no errors found. Booted to recovery mode and ran CHKDSK /R, it found and fixed errors but still gets the stop error. Any other suggestions to try?

  • Rack layout tools

    I'm wondering if there's any tools (preferably offline) that would allow me to layout all of the new equipment that will be going into several standard racks. Currently I'm using Excel to map out all of the slots columns for the data but I suspect that there is some better method of doing this. Suggestions? Edit: Dell has an online tool, but doesn't seem very good at actually saving the data that you're working on (and obviously it's geared towards Dell hardware).
