• Causes of hard crashes on Windows XP and how to debug

  I am occasionally seeing hard lockups on XP: totally unresponsive to keyboard/mouse, screen freezes at time of crash, no SSH/VNC possible. Very intermittent, nothing in the logs. I never see a blue screen on any kind of error message. This morning I logged in via VNC, logged out again, 20 minutes later physically sat at PC and it crashed around the time of VNC logout. I tend to suspect video cards in these kind of situations but it's a modern-ish card with modern drivers (one revision back, but this has been happening for 5 revisions or more) and normally would at least see a blue screen I expect. What would you suspect? Where can I look or what can I set up for more information? Bear in mind that this happens about once every 3 or 4 weeks, so extensive logging or intrusive monitoring isn't really an option.

• Having trouble installing guest additions for a Xubuntu 13.10 guest OS in Virtualbox 4.2.10

  I am using Ubuntu 13.04 64-BIT as my host operating system running Virtual Box 4.2.10. I get this message when I tell virtualbox to install guest additions(CTRL+D),mounting the volume in the guest OS and run the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run file using root by: sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run It starts and then comes to these error messages: Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.2.10 Guest Additions for Linux.......... VirtualBox Guest Additions installer Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. Building the main Guest Additions module ...done. Building the shared folder support module ...fail! (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done. Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components ...done. allusers@allusers-VirtualBox:/media/allusers/VBOXADDITIONS_4.2.10_84104$ I followed everything from the official VirtualBox manual on installing guest additions for linux I used some other commands such as: sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) dkms and: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-x11 I rebooted after executing those command and it still wont work. It still says the kernel modules are missing and the window is not seamless. Any idea what could be the problem?

• How do I get media players to play ripped dvd files using Handbrake?

  I want to rip my dvd collection to put on a server for my tv. I started this with trying 4 dvds using Handbrake. The first 3 ripped perfectly fine according to the directions I used from LifeHacker (http://lifehacker.com/5773000/how-to-rip-dvds-with-handbrake). The 4th dvd took about 2 secs to rip and then stopped saying it was complete. It was not. Now with the 3 files I have I tried to open and play with VLC and Miro. Neither one would play the file. It says its open but there is no sound or video and it doesn't actually show the movie playing in the progress bar. I ran it from the terminal and this is the error message I get. • How can I fix the "TERM environment variable not set" warning in eclipse

  I'm running ubuntu 12.04 LTS and working with eclipse (juno) on a c++ project. I keep getting "TERM environment variable not set" in the console while trying to run the program. I realize this means the variable needs to get set. My question is what should it be set to and how do I set it? I've read that it should be 'xterm' in a few places. So I added export TERM=xterm in my .profile and while eclipse stopped giving me the warning, instead it would output unreadable garbage everynow and then (not a side effect of the program). It did display the program output but intermixed were weird characters. This leads me to believe it's not 'xterm' I should be setting TERM to. Or I'm setting it in an incorrect way. Any help is appreciated. Sample output: **TERM environment variable not set.** Please make a selection ----------------------- 1. Create a budget 2. Edit a budget 3. Display a budget 4. • Connecting my XBOX 360 to home network

  I am trying to set up my XBOX 360 as a Windows Media Center Extender. I input the code as shown on the XBOX screen, but I get the error message: "Cannot Set Up Extender." This means that the Extender was found (there's a separate error msg for extender not found), however it can't be set up. Windows points me to this page which tells me to change my router settings to enable multicast and UPnP. My router doesn't have those specific settings but I did open all ports for the XBOX. What is odd about this problem is that it did work, then I restarted my computer and didn't change any settings, and now it doesn't work. I guess something did change, but I can't figure out anything else to try after opening all ports. I'm running Windows 7 and the router is fairly recent (I bought it about six months ago) so it should be able to handle this. The router firmware is up to date.

• How do I backup Credentials Manager passwords (Windows 7)

  I am trying to create a backup of my stored passwords in Credentials Manager. But after Windows switches to the secure desktop to get the password for the backup file it simply announced that "Your stored logon credentials could not be backed up" and gives as explanation "Element not found", neither of which is helpful. (In fact I hate the "X could not Y" type of error message). I am an administrator on the machine and there is only one password in Credentials Manager. The sole point of the backup is to create a nearly empty Credentials Manager so that I don't have to delete manually hundreds of password entries every time I have to change my domain password. (I think Microsoft haven't throught this through properly. There appears to be no way to delete more than one entry at a time.) Any ideas?

• How can I track a bug that caused a crash and was reported via apport / whoopsie?

  It used to be that when a program crashed, especially when a user was using a pre-release of Ubuntu, apport could be used to open a bug report. The user could then track the bug, see if it affected others, help fix it, etc. As of Precise 12.04, this behavior and workflow changed. As I discovered in Bug #993450 “Apport fails to submit bug report”, by default apport no longer opens a bug report (and it is awkward but not impossible to get it to do so). At the same time people are noticing a new "whoopsie" process, as described at What is the 'whoopsie' process and what does it do?. After some more googling, I dug this blueprint up, which describes the whole process: ErrorTracker - Ubuntu Wiki. (It didn't mention whoopsie or daisy, so I added them - please correct me if I got it wrong). Wow - this sounds like great work to streamline and improve the crash reporting process. I'm left with this question: how does a user learn what the status of the problem is? The blueprint now has this requirement The user should have some way to check back on the status of their crash report; e.g. have some report ID they can look at to see statistics and/or any associated bug #. E.g. provide a serial number at time of filing that they can load via a web page later on. which seems unimplemented. Is there anything available in the meantime? And how does a developer get into the game? Going to https://daisy.ubuntu.com just provides an "Incorrect Content-Type" error message. Finally, I suggest documenting the apport behavior changes in the Release Notes. It should be of interest to anyone who has been trying to help out Ubuntu.

• XP Restart After Power Failure

  Hello, I've almost got my power settings sorted and was hoping someone could help? If I'm running XP and the power is cut, when the power is restored my machine auto restarts (this is what I want!) However, if I shutdown my machine properly (from the start menu & without touching the PC power button!), then switch the power off at the socket, then switch the power back on, the PC does not automatically restart. It's like the bios(?) recieives a message saying "aha, genuine shutdown and not a power cut, therefore do not restart on power restore." I want my PC to restart everytime it sees power restored from the socket? Any way round this? Anyone seen this before? I've upgraded my bios. Thanks in advance, Jim

That is because I have got a Linksys/Cisco SPA-941 phone which has a led which will light up when a new message comes in inbox(somebody calls me). So what I want is the following. I want the e-mail(title only is enough) recorded(By computer voice) and sent to my phone which I can playback when the led lights up. • Communication between WCF service [library] and Self-host [Winform]

  Introduction: I have a WCF service library and a self-host Winform. Service features is File explorer including (copy, move, delete, new folder, delete... etc) and Task Manager (run, kill, update list). Then now I want to add other features like chatting between self-host and client, send an image from client to self-host so when it received, it is shown in a pictureBox in a new form. Till now I have two endpoints for (Task Manager, File Manager) that runs under one service "MainService". And I set up all the connections using DotNet 4.0 WCF Configuration and Wizards, and I'm using netTcpBinding. Problem: I need to know how to communicate with between WCF service lib and self-host, so I can append a received chat from client on self-host form's textbox TextBoxChat. And also call a client callback from self-host when Send button clicked, to send the message from self-host textbox TextBoxMessage. Let's say this's self-host ChatForm So is it possible to do that in WCF? I would prefer to run ChatEndpoint under MainService, so all Endpoints use one port.

• Why does my terrain turn white when I get close to it?

  When I zoom in on my terrain it goes white: The further in I zoom, the greater the whiteness becomes. Is this normal? Is this to speed up rendering or something? Can I turn it off? I'm also getting these error messages in the console over and over again: rc.right != m_GfxWindow-GetWidth() || rc.bottom != m_GfxWindow-GetHeight() and GUI Window tries to begin rendering while something else has not finished rendering! Either you have a recursive OnGUI rendering, or previous OnGUI did not clean up properly. Does this bear any correlation on the issue? Update I create virtual desktops to flit between using the program Deskpot. Turning this program off and restarting has stopped the above errors appearing in the console. However, I still get white terrain when I zoom in. Not a single error message. I've restarted my computer to no avail. I have an Asus NVidia GeForce GTX 760 2GB DDR5 Direct CU II OC Edition Graphics Card. Any known issues? Update I don't think it's fog...

  Hello all, I've got an interesting table in one of my DBs that's confusing me. The table in question has a a few LOB type columns (two nvarchar(max) and a text) and it looks like there's some strange space issues going on. from this query: SELECT type_desc, SUM(total_pages) *8 [Size in kb] FROM sys.partitions p JOIN sys.allocation_units a ON p.partition_id = a.container_id WHERE p.object_id = OBJECT_ID('asyncoperationbase') GROUP BY type_desc; I get: type_desc Size in kb IN_ROW_DATA 27936 LOB_DATA 1198144 ROW_OVERFLOW_DATA 0 (there's just under 8000 rows in the table, each row has a data length of ~10k - not counting the LOB data) here's where it gets somewhat interesting: SELECT ( SUM(DATALENGTH(aob.WorkflowState)) + SUM(DATALENGTH(aob.[Message]))+ SUM(DATALENGTH(aob.[Data])) ) / 1024 FROM AsyncOperationBase aob returns: 76617 As I'm reading it - it looks like the ~75mb of LOB data is using over a gig of space to be stored - I would expect some overhead but not quit that much.   there! After trying to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 11, the upgrading process stopped when running and then I got an "out of disk, grub rescue" message when booting. After running Boot Repair, I got this results. Now I get "Missing Operating System" whent trying to boot. • how to compile VTK on Mac Air

  I am trying to compile VTK on a Mac after successfully doing so on Linux. I am using CMake 2.8.9 and for a long time I had a problem where it couldn't find jni.h. If anyone else has the problem, the answer is to have JAVA_INCLUDE_PATH2 point to "-framework JavaVM". After that it successfully finds JNI and does a "Configure" followed by "Generate". According to the instructions I have the next step should be easy: in a terminal run "make -j 2". I get a message "-bash: make: command not found". Strange.... I am in the vtkBuild directory, which seems the most reasonable place. I even tried the parent directory where I have the VTK source but that didn't work either. I ran a make under Linux and had no troubles, so what do I need to do with the Mac? Thanks, Ilan

  I have been running Virtual Box on a Macbook Pro for a year or more, with an old version of Windows XP running on the virtual machine. Recently my Mac battery dies completely and I had left VB / Windows running. When I re-started the Mac, VB would not load. I reinstalled a recent download of VB from a DMG file I had stored. Now VB starts but when I try to start the virtual machine I get the following message, Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows XP. Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_WRITE_NON_SYS_GROUP). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} I have been backing up the MAC using Time Machine and have backups going back months. I really need to access the windows files as they have my Accounts and other business critical stuff. Any ideas please, or does anyone know where I can get some support for this combination of hardware / software, apologies I am a novice in this area. Thanks in advance.

• Why doesn't my sound card start? It reports code 10.

  When I installed the XP for first time my sound card was working fine. But only after the first reboot it has stopped working. Under Device Manager, the section "sound video and game controller" the entry YAMAHA Native DS1 WDM Driver, has a exclamation mark on it. On left clicking and selecting properties it shows this message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". On trying to update driver it says a better driver can not be found. Any idea how I can solve the issue? Update: As suggested by harrymc I uninstalled the device "YAMAHA Native DS1 WDM Driver" , and scanned for hardware changes. The windows detected and installed the soundcard and it started working properly.BUT, after restarting the same problem occurs. So, now everytime I reboot the computer I am stuck to, repeating the process of uninstalling the device to make it work.

  I have a network consisting mostly of Windows Vista and 7 clients and an Ubuntu server. The server provides both the DHCP and NTP services through dhcp3-server and openntpd. In my dhcpd.conf, the subnet is declared as follows: subnet 10.10.10.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 10.10.10.10 10.10.10.200; option broadcast-address 10.10.10.255; option routers 10.10.10.1; option ntp-servers 10.10.10.1; } The clients don't seem to be using the NTP server though. When I capture the network traffic with Wireshark during the DHCP process, I also see no mention of the NTP option in the DHCP offer message. I am not quite sure if the clients would have to specifically request that option to receive it or if I have to make another configuration to offer the option.

  Hi We have a pair of Internet-facing SIP PROXY/REGISTRAR servers (for resilienced and load-balancing). When a SIP phone registers, it will be handled by one of the REGISTRAR servers (round-robin DNS) - and since this registration is renewed, the firewall port/address translation is maintained. Therefore, when a call is to be sent back to the phone the INVITE message passes successfully through the firewall. However, it is likely that the phone may register with one of the two servers, but the INVITE may come from the other. In this situation, the call fails since there is no translation in place on the firewall. Is there a feature in the SIP protocol to facilitate this? Any other ideas? As our traffic grows, we will no doubt end-up with more than two servers - so the problem will escalate. Thanks, Mike
