Now I want to use ddand pipe the output through ssh, but I can't figure out how to do it. I read several sources on the web, but I'm stuck now.   • Upgrade Postgres 8.3 to 8.4 using Ports (on FreeBSD)

    Hi fellow geeks, I'm trying to upgrade PostgreSQL 8.3 to 8.4 using Ports on FreeBSD (7.2). I found a few good guides, such as this one, but they won't work. Upon running 'portupgrade -o databases/postgresql84-client postgresql-client' I get nothing. Not even an error. (I dropped the -f, since I already have the latest 8.3-client installed.) Anyone care to offer a solution?

  • Implication of variable context switching time

    Hi, I know that constant switching time of the Linux scheduler was a big achievement. I was just asking myself the question what would be the implication of a non-constant switching time. The only obvious reason I can think of is real-time systems where we have to meet deadlines. There it is obviously no ideal if the switching time is "random".     What are the AAC Sample Rate and Bit Rate settings to set in order to encode an audio track with a quality comparable to MP3 320kbps? I need to backup a DVD movie, the default settings for AAC are Bitrate (KB/s) 128 Sample Rate (HZ) 44100 should I set Bitrate (KB/s) 320 Sample Rate (HZ) 48000 or the default are already good?

I can copy the audio portion just fine, but for some reason I keep looking the karaoke lyrics / graphics portion.   • NAS device claims drive in a RAID is degraded but S.M.A.R.T. says it is fine

    I have a Synology DS213 with two 600GB drives in RAID 1. Last night the device reported that my second drive had become degraded and that I should replace it. When I ran a extensive S.M.A.R.T. test the results said that the drive is okay. How can I confirm that the drive is actually bad? Is there any case that the degraded drive is the good one and that it is actually the other drive that is bad?

    I love idea of TextMate that any directory opened in it is already a project. But sometimes I it would be good to ignore files for certain dir and I don't like idea of creating project file in that dir or remembering how I named project file in some special folder like ~/.tmproject. Is there some sort of plugin or something like this which will allow me to ignore files in dir? Perfect solution would be reading .gitignore file.

    I am using Avast Home Edition in my Dell Mini 10v. As you know the notebook is using an under powered processor which is not really suitable for browsing some rich internet websites. So I am in the middle of improving the performance. Will uninstalling Avast and using Microsoft Security Essentials will improve the performance? the memory usage of avast is quite low but I can't compromise security. Is Security essentials a good bet?

    I mostly use Notepad++ for dealing with XML files. It would be good if Notepad++ parsed and colorized my files based on the XML language when I open the files. Instead, I have to open the file, pick XML from the Languages menu. Is there a way to tell Notepad++ that XML is the default language and to treat the files accordingly.

    Does anyone here write their own customized AutoYaST scripts for building SLES servers? I'm not talking about generating them with yast2 autoyast. If so, have you found a way to verify the syntax? xmllint is good as far as telling you that the XML syntax is valid, but with an upto date DTD, it can't tell you anything more, and the shipped DTDs are out-of-date. I've opened a ticket with Novell on this, but who knows when and what I'll hear back.

  • Surfing the internet while downloading becomes painful

    When I try to surf the internet while downloading files (http based, torrent etc.), it becomes painful to open web pages since download traffic is mostly allocated for downloads. Is there a program that can manage this process so that when I surf the weight will be given to internet browser, and when the browser is idle, the weight will be on the download side? I'm using Firefox 3.6.2 on Win7, so any good Firefox addons or Windows based freewares are acceptable.
