• Ruby on Rails controller and architecture with cells

  I decided to try to use the cells plugin from rails: http://cells.rubyforge.org/community.html given that I'm new to Ruby and very used to thinking in terms of components. Since I'm developing the app piecemeal and then putting it together piece by piece, it makes sense to think in terms of components. So, I've been able to get cells working properly inside a single view, which calls a partial. Now, what I would like to be able to do (however, maybe my instincts need to be redirected to be more "Rails-y"), is call a single cell controller and use the parameters to render one output vs. another. Basically, if there were a controller like: def index params[:responsetype] end def processListResponse end def processSearchResponse end And I have two different controller methods that I want to respond to based on the params response type, where I have a single template on the front end and want the inner "component" to render differently depending on what type of request is made. That allows me to reuse the same front-end code. I suppose I could do this with an ajax call instead and just have it rerender the component on the front end, but it would be nice to have the option to do it either way and to understand how to architect Rails a bit better in the process. It seems like there should be a "render" option from within the cells framework to render to a certain controller or view, but it's not working like I expect and I don't know if I'm even in the ballpark.   Hi, I am learning cakephp by myself. I tried to create a user controller with a changepassword function. It works, but I am not sure if this is the best way, and I could not googled up useful tutorials on this. • Have something loaded only when JList item is visibile

  Hello, i'm implementing a Jlist populated with a lot of elements. Each element corresponds to a image so i'd like to show a resized preview of them inside each row of the list. I've implemented a custom ImageCellRenderer extending the Jlabel and on getListCellRendererComponent i create the thumbnail if there'snt any for that element. Each row corresponds to a Page class where i store the path of the image and the icon applied to the JLabel. Each Page object is put inside a DefaultListModel to populate the JList. I've tried to load the items and after set the model in the JList or set the model first and after starting appending the items but the results are the same. Is there any way to load the data only when necessary or do i need to create a custom control like a JScrollPanel with stacked items inside where i check myself the visibility of each elements? • Pointing to array element

  What I'm trying to achieve is say i have an array, i want to be able to modify a specific array element throughout my code, by pointing at it. for example in C++ i can do this int main(){ int arr [5]= {1,2,3,4,5}; int *c = &arr[3]; cout << arr[3] <<endl; *c = 0; cout << arr[3]<<endl; } I did some googling and there seems to be a way to do it through 'unsafe', but i don't really want to go that route. I guess i could create a variable to store the indexes, but I'm actually dealing with slightly more complexity (a list within a list. so having two index variables seems to add complexity to the code.) C# has a databinding class, so what I'm currently doing is binding the array element to a textbox (that i have hidden) and modifying that textbox whenever i want to modify the specific array element, but that's also not a good solution (since i have a textbox that's not being used for its intended purpose - a bit misleading).

• Problem in UITableViewDelegate - RowSelected gives wrong NSIndexPath

  I have a UITableViewSource which I have subclassed. I'm overriding GetCell and using my own subclassed cells, like so: public override UITableViewCell GetCell(UITableView tableView, NSIndexPath indexPath) { MarketItem item=_tableItems[indexPath.Section].Items[indexPath.Row]; MarketCell cell=tableView.DequeueReusableCell(_cellIdentifier) as MarketCell; if (cell==null) { cell=new MarketCell(UITableViewCellStyle.Subtitle,_cellIdentifier,item); } // decorate the cell // ... return cell; } This works but when I get events in my UITableViewDelegate, the index path gets me the wrong cell (events like AccessoryButtonTapped, WillSelectRow etc). The Section and Row numbers look correct but when I do a tableView.CellAt(indexPath) I get the wrong cell. (The row and section numbers again look correct.) Things to note: The table is constantly being updated - items arrive in a different thread which are then InvokeOnMainThread'd Although the table is constantly updated, rows and sections are only added - nothing is re-ordered or deleted If I pause the updates when I get a 'WillSelectRow', it doesn't help Most interestingly (but not a shippable solution) if I make a new cell each time rather than doing DequeueReusableCell, it works correctly. I can't help thinking it's a stupid bug of my own making but can't find it. Any help would be most gratefully received!

• Magento products will not show in category

  I've recently been tasked with the build and deployment of a large Ecommerce site. In the past we've had to use the clients legacy X-cart installation for redevelopment (too far integrated with their existing work flow). We'd heard good things about Magento, so I've set up a test install to get to grips with it. After a couple of initial issues, there is a live development site which displays categories on the default theme. The problem we've hit now is that products don't display..! After a lot more in-depth research into this, all I've been able to discover is that quite a number of developers endorse using other solutions entirely, with the other 50% saying after the steep learning curve the platform is as wonderful as we'd initially been led to believe. Now, my test category is showing, so I know this is configured properly. I've set up three test products and associated them with this (all done following the Magento user guide), checked double checked and thrice checked the products are enabled and visible individually, yet still the front end says the category has no products in it. I've cleared the cache repeatedly, reset everything possible many times in index management - no products show up. I have to make a call tomorrow morning on whether we're going ahead with Magento. If I can't even get it to show products I'm going to have to go with something with a more established track record and more community support available. Can anybody advise what could possibly be wrong here?

• SQL Server race condition issue with range lock

  I'm implementing a queue in SQL Server (please no discussions about this) and am running into a race condition issue. What I'm basically doing is select a record of which the lease happens to be expired, while simultaneously updating the lease time with 5 minutes and setting a new lease ticket. So the problem is that I'm getting deadlocks when I run this code in parallel using a couple of threads. I've debugged it up to the point where I found out that the update statement sometimes gets executing twice for the same record. Now, I was under the impression that the with (updlock) should prevent this (it also happens with xlock btw, not with tablockx). So it actually look like there is a RangeS-U and a RangeX-X lock on the same range of records, which ought to be impossible. So what am I missing? I'm thinking it might have something to do with the top 1 clause or that SQL Server does not know that where Id=@RecordId is actually in the locked range? Deadlock graph: Table schema (simplified):

  I've a table view that has a custom table view cell in it. My problem is that when i try and assign a value to a variable in the custom table view cell I get the stated error. Now, I think its because the said variable is not initialised, but its got me completely stumped. • MySQL - What is wrong with this query or my database? Terrible performance.

  SELECT * from `employees` a LEFT JOIN (SELECT phone1 p1, count(*) c, FROM `employees` GROUP BY phone1) b ON a.phone1 = b.p1; I'm not sure if it is this query in particular that has the problem. I have been getting terrible performance in general with this database. The table in question has 120,000 rows. I have tried this particular query remotely and locally with the MyISAM and InnoDB engines, with different types of joins, and with and without an index on phone1. I can get this to complete in about 4 minutes on a 10,000 row table successfully but performance drops exponentially with larger tables. Remotely it will lose connection to the server and locally it brings my system to its knees and seems to go on forever. This query is only a smaller step I was trying to do when a larger query couldn't complete. Maybe I should explain the whole scenario. I have one big flat ugly table that lists a bunch of people and their contact info and the info of the companies they work for. I'm trying to normalize the database and intelligently determine which phone numbers apply to individual people and which apply to an office location. My reasoning is that if a phone number occurs multiple times and the number of occurrence equals the number of times that the street address it is attached to occurs then it must be an office number. So the first step is to count each phone number grouping by phone number. Normally if you just use COUNT()...GROUP BY it will only list the first record it finds in that group so I figured I have to join the full table to the count table where the phone number matches. This does work but as I said I can't successfully complete it on any table much larger than 10,000 rows. This seems pathetic and this doesn't seem like a crazy query to do. Is there a better way to achieve what I want or do I have to break my large table into 12 pieces or is there something wrong with the table or db?

• What is the purpose of the Html "no-js" class?

  I notice that in a lot of template engines, in the HTML5 Boilerplate, in various frameworks and in plain php sites there is the no-js class added onto the html element. Why is this done? Is there some sort of default browser behavior that reacts to this class? Why include it always? Does that not render the class itself obsolete, if there is no no-"no-js" case and html can be addressed directly? But I get this error when I load the page: Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user 'ODBC'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in C:\xampp\htdocs\includes\database.class.php on line 22 The thing is I have NO idea where it got the idea that it needs to use ODBC as a user... I've read up on doing this stuff and from what I can gather I am doing it correctly. Could anyone lend me a hand? Thank you.

• How can I make Access think there is a primary key

  I have a table and I'm trying to join it with another table, but it doesn't have a distinctive primary key. The two tables do share similarities, “Acct” and “Location”. If I could concatenate “Acct&Location” it would become a primary key, but Access won’t let me make a primary key from a calculation. I provided a small sample below. Each hospital has an “Acct”, but the “Acct” will show up once for each “Location”. How can I make join these in a relationship? I connected the two in a relationships and tried to “Enforce Referential Integrity”, but it indicated “No unique index found for the referenced field of the primary key”. Also, if I run a “Find UnMatched Query” it doesn’t find anything. I think its because I can’t make it realize that in combination “Acct” and “Location” can be perceived as primary keys when used in conjunction of each other. • Why pseudo-elements :before and :after appear in front of my DIV element and not behind?

  I have a DIV element with this given class: .slideshow { background: white; width: 700px; height: 300px; padding:10px; margin: 0 auto; position: relative; box-shadow: 0px 0px 5px grey, 0px 10px 20px rgba(0,0,0,.1) inset; } I define those two pseudo-elements (:before and :after): .slideshow:before, .slideshow:after { content: " "; background: green; width: 50%; height: 50%; position: absolute; z-index: -10; } My problem is that those two pseudo-elements appear in front of my DIV and not behind. Is there any specific reason for this behaviour? Here is an example: EXAMPLE The Javascript part is a bit messy but i'm still working on it. Also I've noticed that if I delete all the JS part I don't have anymore this problem, but I don't think there is anything in the code that should modify the slideshow DIV SOLVED: The problem is in the javascript part where I have: $('.slideshow').css('-webkit-transform', 'rotate(0deg)'); Removing this line solved the problem. I guess that pseudo-elements :before and :after are not compatible with the property transform.

For example, find("atgacatgcacaagtatgcat","atgc") #returns the value 5, while find("atgacatgcacaagtatgcat","atgc",6) #returns the value 15, meaning that by starting the search at index 6, #the next match is found at location 15. For the recursive version, you will want to think about how to use your function on a smaller version of the same problem (e.g., on a smaller target string) and then how to combine the result of that computation to solve the original problem. For example, given you can find the first instance of a key string in a target string, how would you combine that result with invocation of the same function on a smaller target string? You may find the string slicing operation useful in getting substrings of string.

• Geohashing - recursively find neighbors of neighbors

  I am now looking for an elegant algorithm to recursively find neighbors of neighbors with the geohashing algorithm (http://www.geohash.org). Basically take a central geohash, and then get the first 'ring' of same-size hashes around it (8 elements), then, in the next step, get the next ring around the first etc. etc. Have you heard of an elegant way to do so? Brute force could be to take each neighbor and get their neighbors simply ignoring the massive overlap. Neighbors around one central geohash has been solved many times (here e.g. in Ruby: http://github.com/masuidrive/pr_geohash/blob/master/lib/pr_geohash.rb) Edit for clarification: Current solution, with passing in a center key and a direction, like this (with corresponding lookup-tables): def adjacent(geohash, dir) base, lastChr = geohash[0..-2], geohash[-1,1] type = (geohash.length % 2)==1 ? :odd : :even if BORDERS[dir][type].include?(lastChr) base = adjacent(base, dir) end base + BASE32[NEIGHBORS[dir][type].index(lastChr),1] end (extract from Yuichiro MASUI's lib) I say this approach will get ugly soon, because directions gets ugly once we are in ring two or three. The algorithm would ideally simply take two parameters, the center area and the distance from 0 being the center geohash only (["u0m"] and 1 being the first ring made of 8 geohashes of the same size around it (= [["u0t", "u0w"], ["u0q", "u0n"], ["u0j", "u0h"], ["u0k", "u0s"]]). two being the second ring with 16 areas around the first ring etc. Do you see any way to deduce the 'rings' from the bits in an elegant way?

• Android 2.1 How to get Phone Numbers of contacts.

  Hi, I am new to Android and have been working on an app that needs to get all of the user's contact's phone numbers. Apparently the code I have does not work with the 2.1 SDK. • Git add not working with .png files?

  I have a dirty working tree, dirty because I made changes to source files and touched up some images. I was trying to add just the images to the index, so I ran this command: git add *.png But, this doesn't add the files. There were a few new image files that were added, but none of the ones that were modified/pre-existing were added. What gives?
