• Logging in to a locked computer

  Just recently I have stumbled across an old family laptop that has been out of use for nearly two years. The OS is Windows Vista Home Premium so I'm not quite as enthused about my find as I originally thought I was going to be. However, when I power up the computer it immediately bring me to a login prompt. No one in the family remembers the password it is set to and I am eager to get into this machine. Does anyone know of a way to work around this issue and get into the computer to be able to find out what was configured and saved on it two years ago. Without re-installing the OS I want to bring it back into commission within the family.

• Does an unmanaged 4/8-port GBit Ethernet switch with a GBIC port exist?

  I'm looking for a simple unmanaged switch with 4-8 GBit Ethernet ports and a fiber port (either as a GBIC slot or pre-installed with a 1000BASE-SX port). Does something like that exist? [EDIT] I want to connect to places in my home without drilling large holes though the floors. Therefore, I'm looking for a cheap way to connect two GBit switches via fiber. I tried with a media converter (GBit <- multimode fiber) but that costs about 50% throughput. So I was hoping that there is a cheap, small GBit switch which has a GBIC slot). All I found so far are very expensive managed switches with 12 or 24 ports for industry use.

• Why ping another innet machine from MacBook get netgate's ip address?

  I have three machine in my home network connected by a wireless router. One is server installed linux at 192.168.1.1, another is Thinkpad with MS Windows XP at 192.168.1.2, last one is MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.3 at 192.168.1.3. When I ping the Linux Server from Thinkpad (MS Windows XP) I can get the correct ip address, but when I ping it from Mac I get the global address of my router, like 61.135.181.175. Could you tell me why this happen? And how do I get same ping result on Mac and Windows. Thanks

And what has happened is that Wireless Connection is Connected but with No Internet access -- my ipconfig says: Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address : 169.254.33.161 Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0 Default Gatewawy : (empty) After ipconfig /renew I get: An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. • How do I change Clementine's play/pause indicator icons?

  This is how the Clementine indicator displays play/pause: It's a minor detail, but I feel that the play and pause icons just don't go with the monochrome design of the panel. In order to change them I tried to locate all files associated with clementine, but to no avail. How can I install OpenSolaris without the Graphical Environment? And preferably I would like to use the SSH-interface as much as possible, is it even possible to do the installation over SSH? I tried the SSH-boot alternative on the installation-CD, then I have to use a password, but I have no password since I haven't installed the system yet.

  I'm strugling to install rgdal library on Ubuntu 12.10. Installation from within R results in error: Error: gdal-config not found The gdal-config script distributed with GDAL could not be found. If you have not installed the GDAL libraries, you can download the source from http://www.gdal.org/ If you have installed the GDAL libraries, then make sure that gdal-config is in your path. Try typing gdal-config at a shell prompt and see if it runs. If not, use: --configure-args='--with-gdal-config=/usr/local/bin/gdal-config' with appropriate values for your installation. • Shared to Dedicated or Amazon CloudFront to improve performances and keep secured?

  I have a Wordpress which currently takes about 1.8s to 2.5s for the home page to completely load in my country. The page weight is about 700Ko (static content included). In order to increase performances, I'm considering two solutions: Switching to a dedicated host. Using amazon s3 cloudfront to serve static contents. My current shared hosting have servers in a neighboring country but not exactly in mine, and both amazon and the dedicated hosting have some, so that's already an advantage. So considering all that, I still have three questions remaining: Currently having a low traffic (100 unique visitors/days, but growing) will it make a huge difference between my shared hosting and a dedicated server ? Knowing that I already use a cookie-less domain to deliver static contents (but using a redirection to the same server), would using amazon s3 make a real difference ? Talking about the cons of dedicated vs amazon s3, if I choose for the dedicated server something like Ubuntu server and do daily package updates and have only port 80 open, would it be sufficient in terms of security (in comparison with my current shared hosting which manage everything for me) ?

• Suggestions for wireless adapter

  I recently purchased a desktop computer and it did not come with a wireless network card. I am currently using the Belkin Wireless G USB Adapter and it is a very sub par product. It has very slow response times and download speeds with just basic browsing and downloads podcasts through iTunes. Does anyone have a better suggestion for a wireless adapter? Should I go with another USB adapter or one that connects directly into the motherboard? I am current using Windows Vista 64 bit Home Premium.

• 284 GiB of data, 217.4 GiB of space

  I want to reinstall my OS, but I don't have the hard drive space to backup any more (I have a RAID 1 array, so I haven't done it for a while). In my /home I have 284.8 GiB of data, and I have a spare 250 GB (or 217.4 GiB) hard drive that I've been using for backup. What type of compression algorithm (if any) is capable of this type of compression? I don't care about the time, I have a quad core though, so something that utilizes all 4 cores would be great. I have tried 7zip with no success. Ran on one core for two days and failed because of lack of space. Any ideas?

• Microsoft Office "Read-only" warning not appearing on Samba shares on Mac OS X Server

  Hi, some of my users don't get the "read-only" warning (but "read-only" does appear on the title bar and the document is indeed opened read-only) when opening Office 2007 documents already opened by another user. We run the samba share off an XSan volume under Mac OS X 10.5.8 Server. Strict locking is on but oplocks are off (from Server Admin). At home, with a simple samba share in 10.6.3 server, it works correctly. Any ideas? or is this a 10.5.8 behavior?

  I'm attempting to setup vpopmail on my CentOS server (Media Temple). Everything is working like a charm, with the exception that I cannot login to the server from any pop3 client. Upon trying to login I get the following error: Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.(mydomain).com responded: Login failed. I'm running qmail (of course) with xinetd (not tcpserver). I've placed a file called pop3 into the folder /etc/xinetd.d with the content: service pop3 { disable = no socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = root server = /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup server_args = mail.(mydomain).com /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir log_type = FILE /var/log/xinetd.log log_on_success = HOST log_on_failure = HOST RECORD } Can anybody offer any guidance here? • Is there a stable Linux distro using btrfs?

  I'm a big fan of ZFS on FreeBSD (I've been using it on my home server since before it got stable; bleeding edge, baby!) and I'd like to try out btrfs to see how that's evolving. Since it's still largely in development, none of the usual mainstream distros have btrfs as an option. I haven't used Linux in a bunch of years, so I don't really know what my best options are for giving btrfs a try. Requirements: easy to install btrfs supported without requiring me to rebuild the kernel Thanks!

• Robustly disabling specific cron.{hourly,daily,weekly} script

  On various systems that I administer, there are cron scripts that get run via the commonly-used /etc/cron.{hourly,daily,weekly} layout. What I want to know is whether there's any common 'disable this script' functionality. Obviously, simply deleting something out of a given directory will disable it, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution. Deleting /etc/cron.daily/slocate will work to disable the nightly updatedb on my home machine (where I never use slocate), but next time I upgrade the slocate package, I'm pretty sure it'll reappear. The two distributions I'm most interested in are Gentoo and OpenSUSE, but I'm hoping there's a widely-implemented mechanism. Both distros as I have them use vixie-cron (not sure it matters).

Should I add the following lines to crontab ? mysqldump -u root -pPASSWORD database_name | gzip > /home/backup/database_`date +\%m-\%d-\%Y`.sql.gz svn commit -m "Committing the working copy containing the database dump" 1) First of all, is this a good approach ? 2) It is not clear how to specify the repository and the working copy with svn" 3) How can I run svn only when the mysqldump is done and not before ? Avoiding conflicts Any other tip ? thanks

• Going on 15 months for me...

  About 5 face to face interviews, 4 telephone ones and except for the two weeks Census Job. But, after 15 months looking for work, I am still with out a JOB. What is wrong here or with me? Let’s see, hard worker (check), self motivated to do well on a Job (Check), Certified CompTIA A+, Security+  and Network+ Technician (Check), 20 + years experience in “IT” (CHECK), in good health, in 20 years of work only 15 days off due to health issues (Check), 18 years experience as technical Help Desk support (Check), can still work better than younger personal (Check), Strong trouble shooting skills for software, computer hard ware and circuit issues (Check) and Multiple software languages (Hey I have done some programming) Check. Hmm I don’t see any problem with me (of course I could have missed something, please let me know if you see what I am missing).    Now as to what have I been up to since I last blogged. The same things of course, Job hunting, job hunting and study.   I have set up sim of my home LAN and will be adding a wireless print server to the sim and in real life, soon.  I was able to pull up and copy the examples of Cisco router commands that I had on my old lap top, to my newer PC. Every time I used a new command while working the NOC on my last job.   I would cut and past a copy of the command on the router (and what it did) I was working on.  Along with notes on the problem and commands use for same router. I used these to make documentation for on how to handle these types of issues, for the other Operation Techs. My old notes are helping me in studying for the CCENT test.    As to Love Dare, I think it will take more like 40 weeks, than the 40 days of the book. Yes I am making progress, slow but, it is progress. I will have more on that in my next blog.

• Show USB drives in launcher, but not mounted internal partitions

  Well the title pretty much says it all. I have partitions that appear in the launcher when the system mounts them, just like when a USB key is plugged in. I do not want these mounted internal hard disc partitions to show as icons in the launcher, but I do want my external USB to show there when I plug it in. I've tried MyUnity - it has only an option to not show/hide all mounted devices, which is not what I want. Can this be done? • How to get that first development job

  I have been in QA for 10 years, trying to get into developement for about 5 of them. I have taken classes in C++, Java and C#. I was able to write some tools and unit tests in C# at my current job and (by all accounts) did a good job of it. However, 8 months ago, my employer tasked me with the responsibility of establishing the new QA group. Now, I'm doing manual testing and deployment with no promise of returning to development. I have looked at the job boards and there are a lot of jobs for Web developers and wondered how I could break into that. I've picked up some books on Ruby on Rails that I plan to work through on the Mac at home, but I'm not sure employers would be interested in anything but commercial web development. Do you have any suggestions on how I can use my experience to get a job as a junior developer? And I mean one that entailes programming...the postings I've seen for junior developer amount to doing all the grunt work besides coding. They should just call them "Technical Secretaries".

• Recommendation for PCI SATA addon card?

  I have a couple of dead PCs from my wife's office that have working SATA HDDs. Sorry, I don't know if they're SATA I or II, just that they're SATA. Unfortunately, all my spare hardware at home is pretty old; all I have is IDE support. I was thinking I could get a PCI addon card on the cheap that would support SATA and put together a budget server of sorts to play with and be able to use those drives. So I've got a couple questions: After some searching it looks like I can get an addon card for ~20 bucks, but it looks like they're all SATA I? Would that matter? It looks like going to SATAII bumps the price up to $40-$60 or so. Are there any recommendations on a card to get?
