• java runtime 6 with socks v5 proxy - Possible?

  I have written an application that (amongst other things) runs a local service in windows that acts as a SOCKS v5 proxy for Firefox. I'm in the debugging phase right now and have found certain websites that don't work correctly. For example the Java Applet for Picture Uploading on Facebook.com fails because is is unable to lookup domains. My app overrides a hidden FF config setting network.proxy.socks__remote__dns setting it to true. The whole purpose of the app is to allow access to websites when behind a firewall (e.g. if the user is in China), so this setting is essential to ensure domains are resolved remotely also (and not just HTTP requests). In the JRE6 settings (documented here) there isn't an equivalent setting, and since remote DNS resolution is a feature of SOCKS v5 and not v4 as the documentation seems to imply I'm worried that it's just not possible. How can I programmatically make sure the JRE uses a SOCKS v5 proxy for all requests (including DNS)? UPDATE: Steps to reproduce this problem: Make sure you are behind a firewall that blocks (or redirects) internet access including DNS Install PuTTY and add a dynamic SSH tunnel on some port number of your choice (e.g. 9870). Then login to a remote server that has full access to the internet Launch Firefox and you will not be able to browse the web In FF network settings set the SOCKS v5 proxy to localhost:9870 In FF go to about:config, change network.proxy.socks__remote__dns to true You will now be able to browse the web. Go to facebook.com, login, go to your profile and attempt to use the picture uploader java applet to add some pictures It will fail with a series of class not found errors looking similar to: load: class com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class not found. I believe this is failing because the JRE is unable to resolve the domain that the class resides on. I'm basing this belief on the fact that the documentation (http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/deployment/deployment-guide/properties.html) talks only about SOCKS v4 (which as far as I know does not support remote DNS). My deployment.properties file is located in %APPDATA%\Sun\Java\Deployment. I can confirm that modifications I make in the Java Control Panel get written into that file. If instead of "Use browser setting" the network settings for Java I override and attempt to use the SOCKS proxy settings manually, I still have the issue. There does not seem to be an easy way to force the JRE to do DNS remotely through the Proxy. UPDATE 2: Without the SOCKS proxy, from my local client www.facebook.com resolves to 203.161.230.171 upload.facebook.com resolves to 64.33.88.161 Neither host is reachable (because of the firewall) If I login to the remote server, I get: www.facebook.com 69.63.187.17 upload.facebook.com 69.63.178.32 Both these IPs change after a few minutes, as it seems Facebook uses round-robin DNS and other load-balancing. With the Proxy settings set in Firefox, I can navigate to www.facebook.com without any difficulty (since DNS is being resolved remotely on the Proxy). Whey I go to the page with the Java applet it fails with the stacktrace messages I've already reported. However if I edit Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, adding the correct IP for upload.facebook.com I can get the applet to load and work correctly (restart of FF is sometimes necessary). This evidence seems to support my theory that the Java Runtime is not resolving DNS on the Proxy, but instead just routing traffic though it. My application is for mass-deployment, and needs to work with java applets on other sites (not just facebook). I really need a work-around for this problem.   One thing I love about ruby is that mostly it is a very readable language (which is great for self-documenting code) However, inspired by this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/609612/ruby-code-explained and the description of how ||= works in ruby, I was thinking about the ruby idioms I don't use, as frankly, I don't fully grok them. So my question is, similar to the example from the referenced question, what common, but not obvious, ruby idioms do I need to be aware of to be a truly proficient ruby programmer? By the way, from the referenced question a ||= b is equivalent to if a == nil || a == false a = b end (Thanks to Ian Terrell for the correction) Edit: It turns out this point is not totally uncontroversial. • Effective file permissions tool's api in windows

  Starting from Windows Server 2003, Windows included a new tool which calculates the effective permissions for a user (basically it resolves all groups access and takes care of all "deny" permissions as well). An example in point is that a user A belongs to groups B and C. B has been denied read permissions on a file F, while C has been allowed read and write permissions on the file and I want to calculate the effective permissions user A has on file F. This tool is available on Windows Server 2003,Vista,7 and Server 2008 by right clicking on a file and going to properties - security - advanced - effective permissions. What I need is an API in C# which does the same job. The most common FILE API returns access rules (class FileAccessRules), but there seems to be no direct way to calculate effective permissions from these set of access rules. Note: I do not want to process effective permissions in the code if at all possible, but am ready to do so as a last resort.

  I've used the built-in wizard in Visual Web Developer 2008 to create a simple login system. I'd like to get hold of the logged in user's ID, but I'm not sure how. Peeking in the ASPNETDB.MDF in the table aspnet_Users, the column appears to be called "UserId". I gave it a go: Response.Write("ID: " + Session["UserId"]); but it's coming up blank. How do I do this? (This is not for a live project, no need to point out the sillyness in using the wizard.) Thanks

• vs 2010 Deployment without Web Deploy

  with vs 2008 I always used Web Deployment Project to build to three different environments. It is maybe not the best solution, since I still have to xcopy the built files to the server, but it is simple. now with vs 2010 it looks promising, but It looks also complicated. My hosting doesn't have Web Deploy, the newest feature and the flagship technology for deployment in vs2010. My question how can I just build for each environment and copy the files over to the server. Using the Build Deployment Package will create the zip file and when I extract it, it will output so many files and confusing folder structure. Anyone has suggestion?

• MFC SDI Application without a default "New Document" on Startup

  My application is an SDI with multiple views. By default, it creates a new document when the application starts. I want to modify this behavior so that a new document is created only when user explicitly clicks on "New". Or at least mimic this behavior. Any ideas? I am using Visual Studio 2008 with MFC feature pack. I googled and found some solution to this problem in an old MS Journal article. But unfortunately it doesn't seem to work now. Any workarounds or solutions? In short, I need to differentiate between framework call to OnFileNew() and User Click on New.

• What is the best database for my needs?

  I am currently using MS SQL Server 2008 but I'm not sure it it is the best system for this particular task. I have a single table like so: PK_ptA PK_ptB DateInserted LookupColA LookupColB ... LookupColF DataCol (ntext) A common query is SELECT TOP(1000000) DataCol FROM table WHERE LookupColA=x AND LookupColD=y AND LookupColE=z ORDER BY DateInserted DESC The table has about a billion rows with 5 million inserted per day. My main problem with SQL Server is that it isn't too easy to shard or spread out the datafiles. Also, exporting seems to max out at 1000rows per second (about 1MB/s) which seems very slow. Another problem I have is, with SQL Server, if I want to add a new LookupCol the log file grows enormously requiring a large amount of rarely used free space on tap. Are there any obvious better solutions for this problem?

  Hi all, I have a web application that has some non-web projects as well. When using Web Deployment, a single assembly is generated for all the aspx.vb files. When using Team Build (TS 2008), a lot number App_Web_xxx.dll file(s) are generated instead of a single assembly. How can i solve this problem and change the TFSBuild.proj file so that it can generate a single Web Assembly instead of a lot number of assemblies. Please help.   We have a VSTO application-addin (not a document-addin) for Excel, and we want to expose an event to VBA code so that the VBA macro can do some action when this event fires in the addin. How can I get the VBA code to be able to subscribe to an event defined in the VSTO application-addin?   I want to capture events that close editor window (tab) in Visual Studio 2008 IDE. When I use dte2.Application.Events.get_CommandEvents(null, 0).BeforeExecute I successfully captured such events: File.Close File.CloseAllButThis File.Exit Window.CloseDocumentWindow and others. If code in window is not acceptable, I stop the event (CancelDefault = true). But if I click "X" button on the right hand side, "Save Changes"; dialog appears, tab with editor window close and I have no any captured events. In this case I can capture WindowClosing event, but can not cancel the event. Is it poosible to handle "x" button click and stop event?

• Why does ffmpeg stop randomly in the middle of a process?

  ffmpeg feels like its taking a long time. I then look at my output file and i see it stops between 6 and 8mbs. A fully encoded file is about 14mb. Why does ffmpeg stop? My code locks up on StandardOutput.ReadToEnd();. I had to kill the process (after seeing it not move for more then 10 seconds when i see it update every second previously) then i get the results of stdout and err. stdout is "" stderr is below. The output msg shows the filesize ended. I also see a drop in my CPU usage when it stops. I copyed the argument from visual studios. CD to the same working directory and ran the cmd (bin/ffmpeg) and pasted the argument.   Suppose I have a line of code that starts like the following: Func1(Func2(Func3 Is it possible to set up Visual Studio (2005, 2008, 2010) IDE, so that when I hit ';' it will auto-complete all the brackets. I am only interested in brackets, nothing fancier. It doesn't have to be ';' key, it can be another key that auto-completes both brackets and ';'.   I am running a c# unit test (VS 2008). Within the test I do write to the settings, which should result in saving the data to the user.config. Settings.Default.X = "History"; // X is string Settings.Default.Save(); But this simply does not create the file (I have crosschecked under "C:\Documents and Settings\HW\Local Settings\Application Data"). If I create the same stuff as a Console application, there is no problem persisting the data (same code). Is there something special I need to consider doing this in a UnitTest?

  I have a frustrating problem with the criteria builder. I have an application in which one user has one calendar, and a calendar has many entries. Seems straightforward enough, but when I try to get the calendar entries for a given user, I can't access the user property (MissingMethodException). • TFS and Project portal sync

  Just installed TFS 2008. Created a project with portal site. When I create a bug in TFS from Visual Studio I'd like to see that bug in the web portal. And the other way around. When I add a task in the web portal I'd like to see that in Visual Studio. It's as if the web portal is not connected to TFS. I'm using the MSF for Agile Software Development template. I just saw Team System Web Access. That's what I want in addition to the other pages Sharepoint portal provides. For example the Wiki page and calendar view. So one place to see all tasks lists and assign task and see other project related pages. Maybe be able to has the tasks due dates come up on the calendar. Many thanks

• How to disable localization of errors in Visual Studio?

  I use Visual Studio 2008 and it really makes me crazy how it shows error messages (in Error List window, Output window - especially exceptions) partially in English and partially in my native language. Interestingly, it is worse in WPF than in WinForms project. I've read here that it is about Culture of the running thread (so that the problem is in a settings for .NET). Why am I solving it? It's simple because if I run into an error message and I don't know what it exactly mean or how to fix the problem then trying to google the problem in any other language than in English is very problematic. For example, it would be useful to set English for debugging purposes. How to solve the problem? Thanks for any suggestion!

• Visual C# GUI Designer basic tutorial

  Hi, can you recommend a Visual C# Form Designer tutorial that is targeted at experienced programmers who have at least a basic knowledge of C# but are new to the VS C# Form Designer. At least it shouldn't be targeted at programming newbs, like Introduction to Visual C# 2008 Express Edition (it explains how a comment looks like in C#). So far I've found C# Programming Tutorial - Programming Winforms in C# on stackoverflow. Wishlist: ;-) I'm more interested in focus on the designer itself rather than an explanation of single gui-elements. In other words explaining separation between generated-code, what to not edit manually (visual-c#-designer-responsibility) and on the other hand the parts for which the programmer himself is responsible. So a little more abstract best-practice point of view pointing out some caveats would be great as well. I would prefer text over video as well, but that's minor. /Wishlist Perhaps even a Microsoft reference specific to the Visual c# forms designer (which I seem to have been unable to find) would be helpful.

• How can I deploy my .NET app to Amazon EC2?

  I have a .NET Windows service and a .NET Web Application that I would like to deploy to my Amazon EC2 Windows 2008 instances. At this point, all I need to do is to copy the zipped files across to the EC2 box and remote desktop to the EC2 instance and finish the deployment. In order to do this, I have tried LogMeIn Hamachi2 to create a P2P VPN and use RoboCopy to copy the files, however it seems Hamachi doesn't work on Windows EC2. What is your solution for deploying your .NET apps to Windows EC2 instances? I want to avoid running an FTP server on the box just to get my files up on the server and don't have a VPN server (like OpenVPN) running to run a cloud based VPN solution. Perhaps I can find a simple way of using Amazon S3 as a strategy? Any ideas? Suggestions?

• IIS7 permit access only to local network

  Hi, I am having a problem with the IIS 7 on a Win 2008 server. I only want to have access to it inside my network and denied access from anyone outside the network. I had created a rule to permit access to the group of computers with the IP: 192.168.0.1 (255.255.255.0). In the IIS6 this was enougth to prevent access of any IP that don't belong to the network. Any idea of how can I block these access? Thanks!

• Class member functions instantiated by traits

  I am reluctant to say I can't figure this out, but I can't figure this out. I've googled and searched Stack Overflow, and come up empty. The abstract, and possibly overly vague form of the question is, how can I use the traits-pattern to instantiate non-virtual member functions? The question came up while modernizing a set of multivariate function optimizers that I wrote more than 10 years ago. The optimizers all operate by selecting a straight-line path through the parameter space away from the current best point (the "update"), then finding a better point on that line (the "line search"), then testing for the "done" condition, and if not done, iterating. There are different methods for doing the update, the line-search, and conceivably for the done test, and other things. Mix and match. Different update formulae require different state-variable data. For example, the LMQN update requires a vector, and the BFGS update requires a matrix. If evaluating gradients is cheap, the line-search should do so. If not, it should use function evaluations only. Some methods require more accurate line-searches than others. Those are just some examples. The original version instantiates several of the combinations by means of virtual functions. Some traits are selected by setting mode bits that are tested at runtime. Yuck. It would be trivial to define the traits with #define's and the member functions with #ifdef's and macros. But that's so twenty years ago. It bugs me that I cannot figure out a whiz-bang modern way. If there were only one trait that varied, I could use the curiously recurring template pattern. But I see no way to extend that to arbitrary combinations of traits. I tried doing it using boost::enable_if, etc.. The specialized state information was easy. I managed to get the functions done, but only by resorting to non-friend external functions that have the this-pointer as a parameter. I never even figured out how to make the functions friends, much less member functions. The compiler (VC++ 2008) always complained that things didn't match. I would yell, "SFINAE, you moron!" but the moron is probably me. Perhaps tag-dispatch is the key. I haven't gotten very deeply into that. Surely it's possible, right? If so, what is best practice? UPDATE: Here's another try at explaining it. I want the user to be able to fill out an order (manifest) for a custom optimizer, something like ordering off of a Chinese menu - one from column A, one from column B, etc.. Waiter, from column A (updaters), I'll have the BFGS update with Cholesky-decompositon sauce. From column B (line-searchers), I'll have the cubic interpolation line-search with an eta of 0.4 and a rho of 1e-4, please. Etc... UPDATE: Okay, okay. Here's the playing-around that I've done. I offer it reluctantly, because I suspect it's a completely wrong-headed approach.
