• Wessty: Live with HTML 5 (2011 Speaker Tour)

  That’s right: Wessty is on tour. Okay, the banner and the tour is a little over the top, but I am really excited about my upcoming speaking engagements to spread the word about HTML 5! I have already kicked off the tour with the Winnipeg Code Camp last weekend with the world premiere of HTML 5 for .NET Pro presentation, and the turn out fantastic. It was the last presentation of the day, but we still had some great questions about the new standard and got to see how HTML 5 can fit into .NET web applications today. In any case, above you can see the confirmed presentations that I will be doing so far in 2011, but there are a few more events that I have heard about that I hope to add to that list. Ultimately, expect that list to be updated over the course of the year as the year is young and there are plenty of conferences coming up!   I just want to know how could I access the applications installed on xp mode in windows 7. I just installed the application in the default location in xp mode which is c:\program files Do I have to install it on the drive where windows 7 is installed so that I could access it quickly? Because I still have to wait for about 2-4 minutes just to open up a word document(ms office installed in xp mode) that is saved in my desktop in my physical machine. Please help.   Making the new Snow Leopard radmind image* for my lab involves manipulating over 50GB of applications, including passing them over the network. Each try takes four hours or more, and if it fails there's no apparent way to pick up again from partway through. Instead I have to delete all the data (a minutes-long operation) and start over. Furthermore, one successful upload just means now I get to test whether the image works; if it doesn't, I can look forward to repeating the upload as many times as I need to troubleshoot. How can I do this faster and/or smarter?

• Booting Ubuntu 12.04 in Unity the Windows Theme & Icon Theme reversed back to and always locked to Ubuntu default

  I did set up last year Faience-Ocre as my Icon Theme and Adwaita Cupertino L Unity as my Windows Theme (the GTK+ thme was unchanged to Adwaita (default)). It has worked perfectly well until 3 days ago when starting my PC I saw the Ubuntu default showing up for Windows & Icon Theme. I noticed that at start-up the disk access LED is not lit up continuously as before but at moment stops reading for a few seconds (up to 15 s) then complete the disk reading process. When all was working well this LED would lit up continuously. Another thing is that GNOME applications are as well not working well as previously Nautilus and Gedit now don't use the global menu in the system bar but a local window menu. Nautilus - Nemo before the incident Nautilus - Nemo now ... I did open dconf to check the desktop settings in org-gnome-desktop-wm-preferences and everything is looking good. When I change the settings in the app Advanced Settings in the Theme folder I see the respective value changing in dconf. However, there is no change on my desktop. It looks like it's crippled and GNOME related. [Update 1]: I have the same defect as referenced @ ubuntu theme suddenly changed to default and it's not coming back! instead of my GTK theme I get a classic, Windows-95-like grayish theme ... However one of the solution mentionned: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/06/fix-ubuntu-linux-mint-theme-changing-to.html is not working at all, even for 20 s up to 60 s delay.

But maybe one day one of your peers will ask you for help debugging their ADF application so here we go... One of the cool features of JDeveloper and ADF is the ADF Debugger - a way to debug the declarative pars of Oracle ADF. The debugger goes beyond your regular Java debugger and shows you in a clear way specific information related to Oracle ADF - things like where are you in the taskflow/region hierarchy, what is in your various scopes, what is the value of a specific EL and much more. However, from the number of posts on OTN where people are saying "I placed a System.out.println() to see what the value was...", it seems that not many are familiar with the power of the debugger. • How can I create profiles for the windows that are open on my Mac?

  As a semi-dual monitor user on my MacBook, I run into a particular issue that drives me nuts. The scenario is at work I run my MacBook Pro's display as the secondary monitor to a dual-monitor setup. I primarily use the secondary view for my social network windows (Adium, Tweetie, Gabbble, and IRC). I position exactly as I want them to see all at the same time. However, when I disconnect my MBP to go home and reconnect to my other monitor at home, all the applications were shifted onto the main screen (since that is where they went when I disconnected the monitor before I left). With this, I have to go through the whole process again to move and position them on the secondary screen again. Is there a utility or application that will allow me to create screen/window profiles that will basically memorize the current position of all the windows and persist it to be re-instantiated later?

• Upgrade TFS 2010 build server to support .net 4.5

  What is needed in the tfs 2010 build agent, to build .net 4.5 projects, in tfs 2008 we had to set the MSBuildPath property, but the configuration seems to be different in 2010. I get the following error message. (614): The imported project "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v11.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" was not found. Confirm that the path in the declaration is correct, and that the file exists on disk. • Java application crashes my computer. How do I troubleshoot?

  I am using NetBeans 4.1 for my university course (this is an older version, but is the required version for the course - I can't use a newer version). Whenever I use it for longer than several minutes, my computer crashes - it either reboots or I need to reset it. I have tried running with all startup items disabled (to rule out other applications interfering with the app), but it did no good. I have used Sysinternals procmon logging and the logs are corrupt - the only way I was able to get a good log was by enabling boot logging. However these are huge and I don't know what to look for. I am using Windows XP SP3, fully patched up and this is the only application that I have any kind of problem with. Can anyone suggest troubleshooting steps that will help me pinpoint the cause of these crashes and fix them?

• Why isn't DSM for unstructured memory done today?

  Ages ago, Djikstra invented IPC through mutexes which then somehow led to shared memory (SHM) in multics (which afaik had the necessary mmap first). Then computer networks came up and DSM (distributed SHM) was invented for IPC between computers. So DSM is basically a not prestructured memory region (like a SHM) that magically get's synchronized between computers without the applications programmer taking action. Implementations include Treadmarks (inofficially dead now) and CRL. But then someone thought this is not the right way to do it and invented Linda & tuplespaces. Current implementations include JavaSpaces and GigaSpaces. Here, you have to structure your data into tuples. Other ways to achieve similar effects may be the use of a relational database or a key-value-store like RIAK. Although someone might argue, I don't consider them as DSM since there is no coherent memory region where you can put data structures in as you like but have to structure your data which can be hard if it is continuous and administration like locking can not be done for hard coded parts (=tuples, ...). Why is there no DSM implementation today or am I just unable to find one?

• WSS_Content contains?

  WSS 3.0:Windows2003 I have a content database that keeps growing for the name of simply, "WSS_Content" This database is aside from all the other content databases that are linked to an web application, but located in the same directory. I count 5 CONTENT databases on this directory, but only 4 web applications (excluding the centraladmin). Trouble is it keeps growing in size and I need to know what it is and why its growing. Is this a default database of some kind? Where and why would it grow? I recently found, through Central Administration, that one of my sites has a content database name of "WSS_Content_(random numbers and letters)" whereas, the other content databases would have a name like "WSS_Content_(WebApplicationName)" What gives?

• What options are there for generating custom text snippets on the Mac?

  As I am getting more heavily into programming as a job and no longer as a hobby, I am definitely in need of some ways to improve my productivity. One thing that would definitely help in that respect is being able to create customized keyboard shortcuts for text/code snippets. For instance, holding down CMD+L+O+R+E+M will output a paragraph or two of the Lorem ipsum filler text, or CMD+F+U creates a function declaration. What I am ideally looking for is a database where I can store formatted text snippets, bind them to my choice of keystrokes, and then have the text paste whenever I perform the associated keystrokes. Are there any stand-alone applications that can do this for a Mac. Also, are there any text editors / IDEs that have this ability built in?

• Were the first assemblers written in machine code?

  I am reading the book The Elements of Computing Systems: Building a Modern Computer from First Principles, which contains projects encompassing the build of a computer from boolean gates all the way to high level applications (in that order). The current project I'm working on is writing an assembler using a high level language of my choice, to translate from Hack assembly code to Hack machine code (Hack is the name of the hardware platform built in the previous chapters). Although the hardware has all been built in a simulator, I have tried to pretend that I am really constructing each level using only the tools available to me at that point in the real process. That said, it got me thinking. Using a high level language to write my assembler is certainly convenient, but for the very first assembler ever written (i.e. in history), wouldn't it need to be written in machine code, since that's all that existed at the time? And a correlated question... how about today? If a brand new CPU architecture comes out, with a brand new instruction set, and a brand new assembly syntax, how would the assembler be constructed? I'm assuming you could still use an existing high level language to generate binaries for the assembler program, since if you know the syntax of both the assembly and machine languages for your new platform, then the task of writing the assembler is really just a text analysis task and is not inherently related to that platform (i.e. needing to be written in that platform's machine language)... which is the very reason I am able to "cheat" while writing my Hack assembler in 2012, and use some preexisting high level language to help me out.

• My control key doesn't work, how do I fix it??

  My control key on the right doesn't work how it should. E.g. Right ctrl + T won't open new tabs in firefox, right ctrl + w won't switch windows in vim, etc. I know the key isn't physically broken, because xev shows that the right ctrl key generates events, but it just isn't responding as I expect it to in applications. • Intraforest user account merge with Active Directory

  I have a scenario where there is a root domain (RD) and two child domains (CD1 and CD2). Users have accounts on both CD1 and CD2, with identical samAccountNames, names etc, and various applications either use the CD1 or CD2 account for authentication to resources. I need to collapse CD2 into CD1, so I want to merge the accounts together. However ADMT does not allow me this option (merge options are greyed out), I think because it does not support intraforest merge of accounts (although it does not explicitly state this anywhere in the documentation). My question is - what is the easiest way for me to merge these accounts? Ultimately all I really need (I think) is for the SID of CD2\user1 to be added to the SIDHistory of CD1\user1 - is there a tool that supports this? Computer accounts and profiles are not a concern for this scenario. Group migration is unlikely to be an issue either - CD2\user1 is usually granted resource access through membership of a group on CD1.

  My company is serving up deep-zoom maps. We have 100'000s jpg images being served up and was wondering if output caching would be the way to go. Our problem is latency on serving the images. I was wondering if i output caching would indeed improve latency and a general explanation about output caching. • Free MPEG cutting/cropping/editing tool

  I'm looking for a free tool to cut MPEG's that are created by recording from a USB cable receiver. There are a number of applications that do this, and some are free, but most of them take the video and audio decoded and pass them into a codec again to write the final output. I already have the MPEG's encoded the way I like, so what I need is a tool that can strip the beginning and the ending of the recording before and optionally commercial breaks, by rearranging the data within the file, not re-encoding it. Now I'm using some old software that came with the cable-receiver, but this actually re-encodes the video when exporting. I've tried VirtualDub but had major trouble getting the audio and video streams to stay in sync (and this was also re-encoding)... I found this which comes pretty close, but doesn't allow much accuracy in selecting cut positions.

• Tweaking log4net Settings Programmatically

  A few months ago, I had to dynamically add a log4net appender at runtime.  Now I find myself in another log4net situation.  I need to modify the configuration of my appenders at runtime. My client requires all files generated by our applications to be saved to a specific location.  This location is determined at runtime.  Therefore, I want my FileAppenders to log their data to this specific location – but I won't know the location until runtime so I can't add it to the XML configuration file I'm using. • Workaround for an Xcode/iOS SDK Issue...

  Hi, everyone: When you are doing ADF Mobile development, and you need to deploy the application to an iOS device, you would need to compile/deploy the app with iOS App Certificates and Provisioning Profile. This means you would need to "Deploy to Package" or "Deploy to iTunes" during deployment, and configure JDeveloper with the proper certificates/profiles. In some instances (exact combination is still not clear), deploy and signing the application to generate the ipa file may fail with similar error message at the end of the deployment log: [01:04:45 PM] Deployment failed due to one or more errors returned by '/usr/bin/xcrun'. The following is a summary of the returned error(s): Command-line execution failed (Return code: 1) error: /usr/bin/codesign --force --preserve-metadata=identifier,entitlements,resource-rules --sign iPhone Distribution: Oracle Corporation --resource-rules=/var/folders/x7/21sjrpx13qj9tq20z14s3j_w0000gn/T/tkROhP11qU/Payload/HelloWorld.app/ResourceRules.plist --entitlements /var/folders/x7/21sjrpx13qj9tq20z14s3j_w0000gn/T/tkROhP11qU/entitlements_plistEINPBkIG /var/folders/x7/21sjrpx13qj9tq20z14s3j_w0000gn/T/tkROhP11qU/Payload/HelloWorld.app failed with error 1. The workaround is discussed in this article from StackOverflow. This article refers to the old location of Xcode, so you would need to adjust the paths accordingly. The path for Xcode 4.3 and above would be like: /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents//Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/PackageApplication to this script file. To modify it, you probably can’t use Text Editor. I end up opening a terminal session, changed the file permission, and used vi to update it. Thanks, Oracle ADF Mobile Product Management Team
