• How can I track a bug that caused a crash and was reported via apport / whoopsie?

  It used to be that when a program crashed, especially when a user was using a pre-release of Ubuntu, apport could be used to open a bug report. The user could then track the bug, see if it affected others, help fix it, etc. As of Precise 12.04, this behavior and workflow changed. As I discovered in Bug #993450 “Apport fails to submit bug report”, by default apport no longer opens a bug report (and it is awkward but not impossible to get it to do so). At the same time people are noticing a new "whoopsie" process, as described at What is the 'whoopsie' process and what does it do?. After some more googling, I dug this blueprint up, which describes the whole process: ErrorTracker - Ubuntu Wiki. (It didn't mention whoopsie or daisy, so I added them - please correct me if I got it wrong). Wow - this sounds like great work to streamline and improve the crash reporting process. I'm left with this question: how does a user learn what the status of the problem is? The blueprint now has this requirement The user should have some way to check back on the status of their crash report; e.g. have some report ID they can look at to see statistics and/or any associated bug #. E.g. provide a serial number at time of filing that they can load via a web page later on. which seems unimplemented. Is there anything available in the meantime? And how does a developer get into the game? Going to https://daisy.ubuntu.com just provides an "Incorrect Content-Type" error message. Finally, I suggest documenting the apport behavior changes in the Release Notes. It should be of interest to anyone who has been trying to help out Ubuntu.

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). One of the things I like to do, for development environments only is to get rid of that excessively bothersome password policies. I like to have my password as something like p@ssword1, so they are easy to remember etc. etc. Obviously never do this in production. However, Windows Server 2008 comes with a password policy that expires my passwords every 90 days, and requires me to pick complex passwords, can’t reuse passwords etc. etc. Well here is how you disable password policy on a Windows Server 2008 machine - Run Group Policy Management (gpmc.msc) Expand to your domain, look for Forest\Domains\yourdomain\default domain policy. Go to the settings tab, right click on the tab, and choose “Edit”. This will open the Group Policy Management Editor, in which - Go to Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Account Policies\Password Policy, and change the policy to whatever that suits you. Close everything, and run command prompt as administrator, and issue a “gpupdate /force” command to force the group policy update on the machine.   I have a HP DL180 G6 with a P410 raid controller. Presently this runs using 4x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint SATA drives, in a RAID10 configuration using default settings. I am about to add a backplane to increase the drive capacity from 4 to 12 drives, and I plan to install 4 more 1TB SATA Drives. The drives are matched and have close serial numbers (They arrived together in the Manufacturers pallet). Model HD103UJ 1000GB/7200rpm/32M Rated for 3GB/s I will also be installing RHEL 6.1 x86_64. My question is what would be the optimal RAID settings (stripe etc.) for this configuration? To recap: 8x Model HD103UJ 1000GB/7200rpm/32M Rated for 3GB/s RAID 10 configuration. Thanks in advance. • Trying to understand why VLANs need to be created on intermediate switches

  I'm currently studying for the Cisco switching exam and having trouble understanding exactly how 802.1q tagging works. Given three daisy chained switches (A,B, and C) with trunk ports between them and VLAN 101 defined on both end switches (A and C), I'm not sure why the VLAN also needs to be defined on the middle one (B)? Note that I am not disputing that it does need to be configured, I'm just trying to understand why exactly. As I understand it, traffic from VLAN 101 on switch A will be tagged as it goes through the trunk to switch B. According to the documentation I have read, trunks will pass all VLANs by default, and the .1q tag is only removed when the frame leaves through an access port on the relevant VLAN. From this I would expect switch B to simply forward the tagged frame unchanged through the trunk to switch C. Can anyone shed some light on how switch B processes this frame and why it does not get forwarded through the other trunk ?

• EF4 CPT5 Code First Remove Cascading Deletes

  I have been using EF4 CTP5 with code first and I really like the new code.  One issue I was having however, was cascading deletes is on by default.  This may come as a surprise as using Entity Framework with anything but code first, this is not the case.  I ran into an exception with some one-to-many relationships I had: Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'ProjectAuthorization_UserProfile' on table 'ProjectAuthorizations' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints. Could not create constraint. See previous errors. To get around this, you can use the fluent API and put some code in the OnModelCreating: 1: protected override void OnModelCreating(System.Data.Entity.ModelConfiguration.ModelBuilder modelBuilder) 2: { 3: modelBuilder.Entity<UserProfile>() 4: .HasMany(u => u.ProjectAuthorizations) 5: .WithRequired(a => a.UserProfile) 6: .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); 7: } This will work to remove the cascading delete, but I have to use the fluent API and it has to be done for every one-to-many relationship that causes the problem. I am personally not a fan of cascading deletes in general (for several reasons) and I’m not a huge fan of fluent APIs.  However, there is a way to do this without using the fluent API.  You can in the OnModelCreating, remove the convention that creates the cascading deletes altogether. 1: protected override void OnModelCreating(System.Data.Entity.ModelConfiguration.ModelBuilder modelBuilder) 2: { 3: modelBuilder.Conventions.Remove<OneToManyCascadeDeleteConvention>(); 4: } Thanks to Jeff Derstadt from Microsoft for the info on removing the convention all together.  There is a way to build a custom attribute to remove it on a case by case basis and I’ll have a post on how to do this in the near future.

• Sql Server Prevent Saving Changes That Require Table to be Re-created

  When working with SQL Server Management studio, if you use the Design view of a table and attempt to make a change that will require the table to be dropped and re-added, you may receive an error message like this one: Saving changes is not permitted.  The changes you have made require the following tables to be dropped and re-created.  You have either made changes to a table that cant be re-created or enabled the option Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created. In truth, its quite likely that you didnt enable such an option, despite the error dialogs accusations, as it is enabled by default when you install SQL Management Studio.  You can learn more about the issue in the KB article, Error message when you try to save a table in SQL Server 2008: Saving changes is not permitted. Warning: As the above article states, it is not recommended that you turn off this option (at least not permanently), as it will ensure that you do not accidentally change the schema of a table such that data is lost.  Do so at your peril. The simplest way to bypass this error is to go into Option Designers and uncheck the option Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation.  See the screenshot below. The main reason why you will see this error is if you attempted to do any of the following to the table whose design you are saving: Change the Allow Nulls setting for a column Reorder columns Change any columns data type Add a new column The recommended workaround is to script out the changes to a SQL file and execute them by hand, or to simply write out your own T-SQL to make the changes. • Bitbucket SSH and iptables

  I'm a newbie in iptables to be honest. I have some basic rules. Everything is blocked by default. iptables -t filter -F iptables -t filter -X iptables -t filter -P INPUT DROP iptables -t filter -P FORWARD DROP iptables -t filter -P OUTPUT DROP iptables -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT ...some rules for http, ftp etc... iptables -t filter -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT iptables -t filter -A INPUT -p tcp --sport 22 -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT With the last two lines i'm trying to open the access for ssh so i can connect to bitbucket. When i try to connect to bitbucket: ssh -Tv [email protected] I got the error - connection timed out. But when I disable iptables i can connect without any problems. What am i missing? Should I add any additional rules?

• Mac OS X: All bootcamp options start Windows

  I just installed the latest security update on Mac OS X (installed on 2-10-2010). On restart my Mac booted in Windows 7, which I had installed previously and was set not to boot by default. I tried to restart holding the alt key, and selected the Mac OS X partition, but still the Windows 7 partition boots. It does not matter what partition I choose, Windows 7 always boots. I took a look in the OS X partition and noticed that the admin home folder is empty, or at least Windows is not showing any files there. There is another user on OS X and I can see their files no problem. This has me stumped, has anyone any suggestions for a finding a solution?

• Camunda BPM 7.0 on WebLogic 12c

  If we go on tour together with Oracle I think we have to have camunda BPM running on the Oracle WebLogic application server 12c (WLS in short). And one of our enterprise customers asked - so I invested a Sunday and got it running (okay - to be honest - I needed quite some help from our Java EE server guru Christian). In this blog post I give a step by step description how run camunda BPM on WLS. Please note that this is not an official distribution (which would include a sophisticated QA, a comprehensive documentation and a proper distribution) - it was my personal hobby. And I did not fire the whole test suite agains WLS - so there might be some issues. We will do the real productization as soon as we have a customer for it (let us know if this is interesting for you).   How do i change my default phpmyadmin port to 443 or 9999? Is it possible or do I have use port 80 only? If possible, then how do I change share the same? Apache is listening on port 9999 for sure. However, going to URL http://<webserver>:9999/phpmyadmin/ Will give following error (with Firefox browser) An error occurred during a connection to webserver:9999. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) Anyone has any clue what is going on?

• Ubuntu 12.04 boot hangs with a black screen before grub menu after upgrade (gma500_gfx driver)

  I am using Ubuntu on a fit-pc2 specifications and after upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04 I get a black screen at boot time (before displaying the grub menu) and the computer hangs with no disk activity. I have managed to boot Ubuntu 12.04 on a live USB key but had to add the following boot options to do so: console=tty1 or console=text acpi=off noapic nomodeset Using boot-repair, I have tried to add these options to /etc/default/grub (see this pastie log for instance) but I haven't been able to fix the black screen issue. I have tried many other things such as the workarounds mentioned on the web for PSB-GFX_drivers without any success and also to uncomment GRUB_TERMINAL=console with the result of getting a No video mode activated error. During these tests, I have managed to break /boot/grub/grub.cfg and could then hit grub in command line. This gave me the chance to check that I can boot without problem if I type: grub> set root=(hd0,1) grub> linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro acpi=off noapic nomodeset console=tty1 grub> initrd /initrd.img grub> boot How can I tell grub to use these options?

• Creating a GTK theme, but Qt and Java apps are not affected, and title bar button layout is ugly

  I'm playing with a gtk2 / gtk3 theme which I use in the Mate desktop. Everything is looking well, even gtk3 apps, but I still have 3 important issues: Java apps ignore the theme QT apps ignore the theme I'm using those nice ubuntu 10 title bar buttons, but the problem is, when only the close button appears, the title bar looks ugly. Can I make it so that it shows the two other buttons, but disabled? I don't know how Ubuntu 10 handled this. Here's a screenshot showing the 3 problems (above is a small java app, below is a Qt app): Under my previous desktop environments, Unity and Cinnamon, both apps seemed to be taking the right theme correctly, but I did not use my custom theme yet. Cinnamon is based on gnome-shell by the way, and mate is a gnome2-fork. Please note that the shown java app explicitely tries to load the gtk theme at runtime. By default, java apps don't, but this one has the necessary code, which worked in unity and cinnamon. Any suggestions how I could make my theme better so these problems disappear?   Ever had to resort to custom code to control emails sent by an application during integration and/or system testing? If you answered yes then you should definitely continue reading. NFakeMail makes it easier for developers to do integration/system testing on software that sends emails by providing a fake SMTP server. You’ll no longer have to manually validate the email sending process. It’s developed in C# and IronPython and targets the .NET 4.0 framework. With NFakeMail you can easily automate the testing of components that rely on sending mails while doing its job. • C/C++: Who uses the logical operator macros from iso646.h and why?

  There has been some debate at work about using the merits of using the alternative spellings for C/C++ logical operators in iso646.h: and && and_eq &= bitand & bitor | compl ~ not ! not_eq != or || or_eq |= xor ^ xor_eq ^= According to Wikipedia, these macros facilitate typing logical operators in international (non-US English?) and non-QWERTY keyboards. All of our development team is in the same office in Orlando, FL, USA and from what I have seen we all use the US English QWERTY keyboard layout; even Dvorak provides all the necessary characters. Supporters of using the iso646.h macros claim we should them because they are part of the C and C++ standards. I think this argument is moot since digraphs and trigraphs are also part of these standards and they are not even supported by default in many compilers. My rationale for opposing these macros in our team is that we do not need them since: Everybody on our team uses the US English QWERTY keyboard layout; C and C++ programming books from the US barely mention iso646.h, if at all; and new developers may not be familiar with iso646.h (this is expected if they are from the US). /rant Finally, to my set of questions: Does anyone in this site use the iso646.h logical operator macros? Why? What is your opinion about using the iso646.h logical operator macros in code written and maintained on US English QWERTY keyboards? Is my digraph and trigraph analogy a valid argument against using iso646.h with US English QWERTY keyboard layouts? EDIT: I missed two similar questions in StackOverflow: Is anybody using the named boolean operators? Which C++ logical operators do you use: and, or, not and the ilk or C style operators? why?

• Remote Desktop doesn't recognize username change

  There are two active user accounts on the Windows 7 Professional server, Owner, and Guest. Owner is an Administrator with a password. Guest is the default Guest account with no password, but has been added to Remote Desktop Users. When attempting to connect to the server via a Windows 7 Professional client, Guest accepts RD connections fine, however, Owner throws an error "Unable to connect to Local Security Authority." I created a new Administrator account, named Remote, with the same password as Owner. Remote Desktop worked perfectly. I then deleted Owner, and renamed Remote to Owner. Now, Remote Desktop gives the same error ("Unable to connect to Local Security Authority") when attempting to log into the new Owner. However, attempting to log into Remote (even though it was renamed to Owner), works. Completely at a loss here, what is going on? Why won't Owner work, and why does Remote Desktop still use the old name on the renamed account?

• Recommended boot partition size for Windows 7

  I started using One Big Partition for everything and separating data out with folders when I got my current computer years ago. I'm preparing to upgrade my system from Windows XP to Windows 7 and I thought I might go back to putting my data on a separate partition. Most likely I'll just use the default OS install. My current Program Files tree has ~16 GB of stuff. Thinking ahead though, I've had XP installed for years. Who knows what apps I'm going to install down the line? This, of course, begs the question: How big do I make my Windows 7 install partition?

• Can't reinstall VLC

  I use VLC a lot. And when 2.0 came out Ubuntu did not update to that version, the REPO had the older version even months later, So I added the daily repo: http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu and that worked for a while, after a few months later I received a 'Distribution upgrade' and when I installed it, it removed VLC. when I tried to re-install it gave me a bunch of unmet dependency's, so I disabled the source, ran apt-get update, and tried to install the older VLC, that did not work either. • Thomson TG585v7 router - promiscuous mode

  I have a TG585v7 as a router with several machines plugged into it. In the default setup, the packets are only delivered to the specific machine but I want to be able to setup to monitor all network traffic on one of the machines, i.e. I need those packets to be picked up when my ethernet card is in promiscuous mode. Is this possible? Guide here has this "mcastpromisc Make the IP interface multicast promiscuous. OPTIONAL", is this what I am looking for? Does it mean I need to manually add all my machines by their MAC addresses to be able to receive packets destined for them? Or am I out of luck and I need to get a better router?

• Retrieve the full ASP.NET Form Buffer as a String

  Did it again today: For logging purposes I needed to capture the full Request.Form data as a string and while it’s pretty easy to retrieve the buffer it always takes me a few minutes to remember how to do it. So I finally wrote a small helper function to accomplish this since this comes up rather frequently especially in debugging scenarios or in the immediate window. Here’s the quick function to get the form buffer as string: /// <summary> /// Returns the content of the POST buffer as string /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static string FormBufferToString() { HttpRequest Request = HttpContext.Current.Request; if (Request.TotalBytes > 0) return Encoding.Default.GetString(Request.BinaryRead(Request.TotalBytes)); return string.Empty; } Clearly a simple task, but handy to have in your library for reuse. You probably don’t want to call this if you have a massive inbound form buffer, or if the data you’re retrieving is binary. It’s probably a good idea to check the inbound content type before calling this function with something like this: var formBuffer = string.Empty; if (Request.ContentType.StartsWith("text/") || Request.ContentType == "application/x-www-form-urlencoded") ) { formBuffer = FormBufferToString(); } to ensure you’re working only on content types you can actually view as text.
