• Dependency problem while missing package is already installed

  I am trying to install a program but I am getting a dependency error. The error clearly points out: Dependency is not satisfiable: libc6-amd64 (>= 2.14) I went on to investigate and I found out that I have 2.19 version installed, actually: alex@MaD-pc:~$ apt-cache policy libc6-amd64 libc6-amd64:i386: Installed: 2.19-0ubuntu6 Candidate: 2.19-0ubuntu6 Version table: *** 2.19-0ubuntu6 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Why am I getting this error if I already have this package? I also should probably mention that the system is 100% up to date. I run the updates and upgrades, restarted the system and then tried to install the package again with the same error popping up. Edit 1: I am using amd64 but I have installed some 32-bit libraries required by some program installed via wine if I recall correctly.

• Dreamweaver not connecting RDC

  I am trying to use Dreamweaver to Remote Desktop Connect into a computer where a website is hosted. Normal traffic to this server is routed to another domain, but when accessed by IP (it is my understanding) the traffic never hits any sort of nameserver request, and so stays there. This server is set up so that the only way I can access it is RDC. I can connect using an RDC program, but when I attempt to use Dreamweaver, I get a vague error. The desired action could not be completed because an unexpected client/server communication error occurred. I have Web URL as http://my.ip.number/directory And in the settings panel, I have Host name: my.ip.number Port: 3388 Host directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\directory/directory Username: user Password: ••••••• What could be preventing Dreamweaver form connecting? • Color distortion with Intel HD4000 over HDMI output - VGA is fine

  I set up a new system with i5 3570k gigabyte z77 d3h using integrated graphics (HD4000) and I've installed the 64bit Desktop version of 12.04. Connected to my Acer Screen via HDMI, the colors are horribly distorted. I think the biggest issue is that black appears as greenish. Over VGA everything is fine. Interestingly, I once observed that connecting both, the VGA and the HDMI cable at the same time, solved the issue. Ubuntu thought 2 screens were connected, I mirrored the image, and over HDMI the colors looked fine. However, after a reboot I am now unable to reproduce this behavior. I read frequently, that Intel hardware should be supported out of the box by Ubuntu but it doesn't seem to be the case here. Should I upgrade my Kernel? If so, which version would you recommend? • Server responses "bus error" to every command

  I have a linux machine dedicated to MySQL server with a pretty high load. Today I woke up and was terrified to see, that database server is down. I could connect to it via SSH, but it was responding with bus error to each and every command. [root@r1304 home]# ls Bus error [root@r1304 home]# tail /var/log/messages Bus error [root@r1304 home]# reboot Bus error [root@r1304 home]# free -m Bus error [root@r1304 home]# chkdisk Bus error I went to Data Center and did a hard reset, which seemed to help, but after a half an hour situation reapeated and now I can't even connet via SSH anymore. Any ideas what this could be? how to diagnose such a problem and what are possible fixes? Server has 32 GB RAM, 2xSSD drives with software RAID UPDATE According to Zabbix, when MySQL died, number of processes stated to increase drammaticaly, until I did a hard reset. What could those be? • Ubuntu 3D does not work on Dell system with a AMD Radeon HD 6470M

  I am running 64 bit Ubuntu on Dell with 1GB graphic card. I login with "Ubuntu" hoping to see Unity 3d but it doesn't. Unity 2D runs instead. when I type in echo "$DESKTOP_SESSION" it confirms the Unity-2D. I've checked the System info that shows like : The graphics row shows itself as empty. SO I've presumed that the graphic drivers aren't detected and hence I went to Unity- Additional Drivers and installed the fglrx driver that the UI has suggested. Even after installing so, the graphics part in System info details shows nothing and still Unity 2D runs in spite of all the effort. Please help! How can I get my Unity 3D back? • How do I set logfile rotation limit for CF8 -out logs?

  I'm trying to set the number of logs to keep for the CF -out logs. I found a jrunsvc command line switch to set this but it throws an error saying the value must be at least 1000: jrunsvc.exe -logfileRotationLimit 50 "ColdFusion 8 Application Server" Error: log file rotaion limit must be at least 1000 The default is 200 files which seems excessive but 1000 is even worse. Am I not understanding this value properly? I did set it to 1001 and then I found this registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\ColdFusion 9 Application Server\LogFileRotationLimit I'm hesitant to set it there manually in case the value does not equal the number of files to keep.

• To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

  short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

• Making a class pseudo-immutable by setting a flag

  I have a java project that involves building some pretty complex objects. There are quite a lot (dozens) of different ones and some of them have a HUGE number of parameters. They also need to be immutable. So I was thinking the builder pattern would work, but it ends up require a lot of boilerplate. Another potential solution I thought of was to make a mutable class, but give it a "frozen" flag, a-la ruby. Here is a simple example: public class EqualRule extends Rule { private boolean frozen; private int target; public EqualRule() { frozen = false; } public void setTarget(int i) { if (frozen) throw new IllegalStateException( "Can't change frozen rule."); target = i; } public int getTarget() { return target; } public void freeze() { frozen = true; } @Override public boolean checkRule(int i) { return (target == i); } } and "Rule" is just an abstract class that has an abstract "checkRule" method. This cuts way down on the number of objects I need to write, while also giving me an object that becomes immutable for all intents and purposes. This kind of act like the object was its own Builder... But not quite. I'm not too excited, however, about having an immutable being disguised as a bean however. So I had two questions: 1. Before I go too far down this path, are there any huge problems that anyone sees right off the bat? For what it's worth, it is planned that this behavior will be well documented... 2.   We just issued a press release with a number of very good updates for everyone There are a few things of importance : 1) As of right now, Oracle Linux 6 with the Unbreakable Kernel is certified with a number of Oracle products such as Oracle Database 11gR2 and Oracle Fusion Middleware. The certification pages in the Oracle Support portal will be updated with the latest certification status for the various products. As always we have gone through a long period of very comprehensive testing and validation to ensure that the whole stack works really well together, with very large database workloads, middleware application workloads etc. 2) Standard certification efforts for Oracle Linux 6 with the Red Hat Compatible Kernel are in progress and we expect that to be completed in the next few months. Because of the compatibility between OL6 and RHEL6 we can then also state certification for RHEL6. 3) Oracle Linux binaries (and of course source code) have been free for download -and- use (including production, not just trial periods) since day one. You can freely redistribute the binaries, unlike many other Linux vendors where you need to pay a support subscription to even get access to the binaries. We offered both the base distribution release DVDs (OL4, OL5, OL6) and the update releases, such as 5.1, 5.2 etc. this way. Today, in this announcement, we also started to make available the bugfix and security updates released in between these update releases. So the errata streams (both binary and source code) for OL4, 5 and 6 are now free for download and use from http://public-yum.oracle.com. This includes uek and uek2. • mplayer does not disable screensaver

  so i have upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 and i installed smplayer from the repositories. The thing is when i play a movie (even in full screen) the screen saver comes up.   I was reading an article on Mashable recently by a long time iPhone user who is living solely on a Lumia 920 at the moment and giving her assessment.  One thing that struck a nerve with me was her describing the Windows Phone ecosystem as immature.  She wasn’t saying this because of the number of apps or the big names like most people do.  She means the quality of the apps in the store. This hit a nerve with me.  I find it hard to believe that the majority of app on iOS are of any higher quality than any other platform.  I believe in any ecosystem you are going to find some high end, high quality apps, but the majority by default will be from people who are trying to solve a problem but do not have the resources to have top graphics and full blown testing.  There will also be a large number that are just there trying to trick you into giving up some cash. Does any of the mean that we shouldn’t take notice of this complaint?  Of course not!  We should always strive to publish the best quality apps possible.  Don’t do things like leaving default app icons and backgrounds.  Put a little effort into your design.  You should also spend as much time as possible ensuring against crashes and giving the user the best experience possible.  Think through your apps organization and navigation.  Go the extra step of putting it into beta and letting select people use it and give you feedback before going to full release. • More Tables or More Databases?

  I got an e-mail from someone that has an interesting situation. He has 15,000 customers, and he asks if he should have a database for their data per customer. Without a LOT more data it’s impossible to say, of course, but there are some general concepts to keep in mind. Whenever you’re segmenting data, it’s all about boundary choices. You have not only boundaries around how big the data will get, but things like how many objects (tables, stored procedures and so on) that will be involved, if there are any cross-sections of data (do they share location or product information) and – very important – what are the security requirements? From the answer to these types of questions, you now have the choice of making multiple tables in a single database, or using multiple databases. A database carries some overhead – it needs a certain amount of memory for locking and so on. But it has a very clean boundary – everything from objects to security can be kept apart. Having multiple users in the same database is possible as well, using things like a Schema. But keeping 15,000 schemas can be challenging as well. My recommendation in complex situations like this is similar to a post on decisions that I did earlier – I lay out the choices on a spreadsheet in rows, and then my requirements at the top in the columns. I  give each choice a number based on how well it meets each requirement. At the end, the highest number wins. And many times it’s a mix – perhaps this person could segment customers into larger regions or districts or products, in a database. Within that database might be multiple schemas for the customers. • Never Bet Against the Impossible

  My uncle used to say “If a man tells you that his car squirts milk in his eye when you lift the hood, don’t bet against that. You’ll end up with milk in your eye.” My friend Allen White tells me this is taken from a play (and was said about playing cards), but I think the sentiment holds, even in database work. I mentioned the other day that you should allow the other person to talk and actively listen before you propose a solution. Well, I saw a consultant “bet against the impossible”  the other day – and it bit her. She explained to the person telling her the problem that the situation simply couldn’t exist that way, and he proceeded to show her that it did. She got silent, typed a few things, muttered a little, and then said “well, must be something else.” She just couldn’t admit she was wrong. So don’t go there. If someone explains a problem to you with their database, listen with purpose, and then explore the troubleshooting steps you know to find the problem. But keep your absolutes to yourself. In fact, I have a friend that has recently sent me one of those. He connects to a system with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) version 2008 (if I recall correctly) and it shows a certain version number of the target system in the connection tab. Then he connects to it using SSMS 2008 R2 and gets a different number. Now, as far as I know, we didn’t change the connection string information, and that’s provided by the target system, so this is impossible. But I won’t tell him that.   Is there any way to have a state variable in VIM? Consider: " Relative line numbers in Normal mode, absolute in Insert mode. • Suggestion: ALLFILES option for RESTORE

  The default action when performing a backup is to append to the backup file yet the default action when restoring a backup is to restore just the first file.I constantly come across customer situations where they are puzzled that they seem to have lost data after they have completed a restore. Invariably, it's just that they haven't restored all the backups contained within a single OS file. This happens most commonly with log backups but also happens when they have not restored the most recent database backup file.It is not trivial to achieve this within simple T-SQL scripts, when the number of backup files within the OS file is unknown. It really should be.I'd like to see a FILES=ALLFILES option on the RESTORE command. For RESTORE DATABASE, it should restore the most recent database backup plus any subsequent log files.   How do I install Eclipse 4 through Ubuntu Software Center on my desktop 12.04 64 bit os? The reason I would like to install through Ubuntu Software Center is because it's easy to uninstall the software, and i want to manage all my installed programs through the Software Center. If I have to install through other means, will Eclipse show up in Ubuntu Software Center? Thanks for any help. Update: Clarification I did find Eclipse but it was version 3.7. I'm looking to install version 4.
