• SQL Server Performance & Latching

  I have a SQL server 2000 instance which runs several concurrent select statements on a group of 4 or 5 tables. Often the performance of the server during these queries becomes extremely diminished. The querys can take up to 10x as long as other runs of the same query, and it gets to the point where simple operations like getting the table list in object explorer or running sp_who can take several minutes. I've done my best to identify the cause of these issues, and the only performance metric which I've found to be off base is Average Latch Wait time. I've read that over 1 second wait time is bad, and mine ranges anywhere from 20 to 75 seconds under heavy use. So my question is, what could be the issue? Shouldn't SQL be able to handle multiple selects on a single table without losing so much performance? Can anyone suggest somewhere to go from here to investigate this problem? Thanks for the help.

  Here is the very interesting error I received from a reader. He has very interesting question. He attempted to use BIT filed in the SUM aggregation function and he got following error. He went ahead with various different datatype (i.e. INT, TINYINT etc) and he was able to do the SUM but with BIT he faced the problem. Error Received: Msg 8117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Operand data type bit is invalid for sum operator. • PHP MYSQL loop to check if LicenseID Values are contained in mysql DB [closed]

  I have some troubles to find the right loop to check if some values are contained in mysql DB. I'm making a software and I want to add license ID. Each user has x keys to use. Now when the user start the client, it invokes a PHP page that check if the Key sent in the POST method is stored in DB or not. If that key isn't store than I need to check the number of his keys. If it's than X I'll ban him otherwise i add the new keys in the DB. I'm new with PHP and MYSQL. • Strange port forwarding problem

The port forwarding to my internal webserver (10.0.0.10 on Port 80) works without a problem but the port forwarding to a windows server (10.0.0.15) on port 3389 doesn't work. The port 3389 is open. • Column order can matter

  Ordinarily, column order of a SQL statement does not matter. Select a,b,c from table will produce the same execution plan as   Select c,b,a from table However, sometimes it can make a difference.   Consider this statement (maxdop is used to make a simpler plan and has no impact to the main point):   select SalesOrderID, CustomerID, OrderDate, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate asc) as RownAsc, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate Desc) as RownDesc from sales.SalesOrderHeader order by CustomerID,OrderDateoption(maxdop 1) If you look at the execution plan, you will see similar to this That is three sorts.  One for RownAsc,  one for RownDesc and the final one for the ‘Order by’ clause.  Sorting is an expensive operation and one that should be avoided if possible.  So with this in mind, it may come as some surprise that the optimizer does not re-order operations to group them together when the incoming data is in a similar (if not exactly the same) sorted sequence.  A simple change to swap the RownAsc and RownDesc columns to produce this statement : select SalesOrderID, CustomerID, OrderDate, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate Desc) as RownDesc , ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate asc) as RownAsc from Sales.SalesOrderHeader order by CustomerID,OrderDateoption(maxdop 1) Will result a different and more efficient query plan with one less sort. The optimizer, although unable to automatically re-order operations, HAS taken advantage of the data ordering if it is as required.  This is well worth taking advantage of if you have different sorting requirements in one statement. Try grouping the functions that require the same order together and save yourself a few extra sorts.

  I have (surprisingly) gotten a lot of comments over the last post about using OmniGraffle as an interactive EA tool.  The news flash/update is that it now supports VGA output.  I had sent a note to the developers and they responded that this was a highly sought after feature…well, they delivered. I have tried it informally and it works, thought there is a little lag between the drawing on the screen and the output, but it is not terrible. • Better drivers for SiS 650/740 integrated video?

  I installed Xubuntu 10.10 on an old box today and the graphical performance is horrid. Alternative drivers? The additional drivers tool shows nothing. • The one feature that would make me invest in SSIS 2012

  This week I was invited my Microsoft to give two presentations in Slovenia. My presentations went well and I had good energy and the audience was interacting with me. When I had some time over from networking and partying, I attended a few other presentations. At least the ones who where held in English. One of these was "SQL Server Integration Services 2012 - All the News, and More", given by Davide Mauri, a fellow co-worker from SolidQ. We started to talk and soon came into the details of the new things in SSIS 2012. All of the official things Davide talked about are good stuff, but for me, the best thing is one he didn't cover in his presentation. In earlier versions of SSIS than 2012, it is possible to have a stored procedure to act as a data source, as long as it doesn't have a temp table in it. In that case, you will get an error message from SSIS that "Metadata could not be found". This is still true with SSIS 2012, so the thing I am talking about is not really a SSIS feature, it's a SQL Server 2012 feature. And this is the EXECUTE WITH RESULTSETS feature! With this, you can have a stored procedure with a temp table to deliver the resultset to SSIS, if you execute the stored procedure from SSIS and add the "WITH RESULTSETS" option. If you do this, SSIS is able to take the metadata from the code you write in SSIS and not from the stored procedure! And it's very fast too. Let's say you have a stored procedure in earlier versions and when referencing that stored procedure in SSIS forced SSIS to call the stored procedure (which can take hours), to retrieve the metadata. Now, with RESULTSETS, SSIS 2012 can continue in milliseconds! This is because you provide the metadata in the RESULTSETS clause, and if the data from the stored procedure doesn't match this RESULTSETS, you will get an error anyway, so it makes sense Microsoft has provided this optimization for us.

• Best practices for caching search queries

  I am trying to improve performance of my ASP.net Web Api by adding a data cache but I am not sure how exactly to go about it as it seems to be more complex than most caching scenarios. An example is I have a table of Locations and an api to retrieve locations via search, for an autocomplete. /api/location/Londo and the query would be something like SELECT * FROM Locations WHERE Name like 'Londo%' These locations change very infrequently so I would like to cache them to prevent trips to the database for no real reason and improve the response time. Looking at caching options I am using the Windows Azure Appfabric system, the problem is it's just a key/value cache. Since I can only retrieve items based on keys I couldn't actually use it for this scenario as far as Im aware. Is what I am trying to do bad use of a caching system? Should I try looking into NoSql DB which could possibly run as a cache for something like this to improve performance? Should I just cache the entire table/collection in a single key with a specific data structure which could assist with the searching and then do the search upon retrieval of the data?

  What is Validation Rule? A validation rule is a piece of code that performs some check ensuring that data meets given constraints.In an enterprise application development environment, often it might require developers to have validation be performed based on some logic at several places across projects. Instead of redundant validation creation, a custom validation rule provides a library with a validation rules that can be registered and used across applications.A custom Validation is encapsulated in a reusable component so that you do not have to write it every time when you need to do input validation. Here is how we can easily implement a custom validation that checks for name of an employee to be "KING" For creating a custom Validation , 1.         Create Generic Application Workspace "CustomValidator" with the project "Model" 2.         Create an BC4J based on emp table. 3.         Create a custom validation rule.In EmpNamerule class, update the validateValue(..) method as follows:  public boolean validateValue(Object value) { EntityImpl emp = (EntityImpl)value; if(emp.getAttribute("Ename").toString().equals("KING")){ return false; } return true; } Create ADF Library: Next step would be to create ADF library. Create ADF library with name lets say testADFLibrary1.jarRegister ADF Library Next step is to register the ADF library , so that its available across the applications. Invoke the menu "Tools -> Preferences"Select the option "Business Components -> Registered Rules" from left paneClick on button "Pick Library". • IPSec Offload support in 82576GB controller for Linux

  Due to migration of servers to cloud computing, we bought several NICs that support mechanisms like SRIOV and VMDQ. Furthermore, as security risk was also a concern and we did not want to create more overhead on the processor, IPSec Offload support was essential. The model chosen was: Intel Gigabit ET2 Quad Port Svr Adptr. (With 82576GB controller): http://ark.intel.com/products/49187/intel-gigabit-et2-quad-port-server-adapter However, we were unable to configure IPSec Offload on Linux. We tried to test on another server we have, a Windows Server 2012 R2, but again without success. It seems that the driver for this controller is not available for windows server 2012 R2, and Linux. The test on windows would be only for verification purposes, we will not use this platform. Could someone confirm this lack of support for Linux?
