• My First Post with Windows Live Writer

  I receive daily newsletters from DotNetSlackers regarding various .NET topics.  Today I read an article from an apparent Microsoft employee who gave some insight to the organizational culture within the company.  Always on the lookout for new tools and technologies I noted that he used Windows Live Writer for editing and managing his blog content.  I thought I’d give it a try. Let’s try adding a picture and adjusting it’s placement within this blog post relative to this text. … Adding the image is quite simple using the “Insert” options given to the right of the blog content editor.  Inserting without using a table makes aligning text just so impossible, but that’s inherent with any WYSIWYG editor.  Instead using a table with at least 2 columns (1 for text and 1 for the image) works best.   Let’s try adding a map!   That’s pretty sweet!  You can map to any location within the editor itself.  A dialog opens which utilizes Bing! allowing you to enter the address, etc. Well, that’s enough for me.  Time to pimp this to my wife for use on our family blog.  BTW, Windows Live Writer allows you to post content to a number of blogging sites…fantastic!!!

• Replicating/Synchronizng multiple tables across diffrent Databases on the same instance

  I have few tables that needed to be replicated/synchronized across several databases in our SQL Server 2008 cluster. I know it's possible to replicate between multiple instances, but I'm looking for replication or synchronization in the same instance between specific tables of databases. The replicaiton/synchronization should happen every half-hour or so, but I don't mind it happening constantly. I can't use DROP the target table and INSERT (copy) the source table since there are many constraints. Reason for this is to not manage in the application layer and write to 2 different databases at the same time. Example: DB1 has T1, T2 and T3 - these are constantly being updated by the application, APP1 running on DB1. DB2 needs to have an updated copy of T1 at all times, also, there is a different application, APP2 runs only on DB2. Both DB1 and DB2 are located on the same instance, INST1. Would it be possible to replicate T1, T2 and T3 from DB1 to DB2 ? Thanks, Idan.

• Prolific PL2303 and Ubuntu 12.04 (english)

  I am having the same issue as posted here Prolific PL2303 and Ubuntu 12.04 (only in english). The usb to serial adapter worked fine on 11.10 but after upgrade to 12.04 it is not recognized in lusb. if i connect the device after boot and then run: dmesg | grep tty i get: [ 101.305275] usb 2-1.4.4: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB3 seems like it is working fine, but a running the command few seconds later adds the line: [ 107.788672] pl2303 ttyUSB3: pl2303 converter now disconnected from ttyUSB3 after this the device is no longer detected at all. any suggestions??

• Slow wifi with D-link DWA-160 A2

  I recently bought a USB wifi adapter for my new desktop computer. It's a D-link DWA-160 A2. From the start it didn't want to work at all, but after unplugging and then plugging it back in, it seems to work. However, my browsing is painfully slow. NetworkManager reports the connection to be at around 78-85% signal strength, which seems perfectly acceptable. Is there anything I can do to make it faster? I'm dual booting with Windows 7, where it seems to work fine, so I'm guessing that the problem occurs because of crappy drivers.

• Data Pump: Consistent Export?

  Ouch ... I have to admit as I did say in several workshops in the past weeks that a data pump export with expdp is per se consistent. Well ... I thought it is ... but it's not. Thanks to a customer who is doing a large unicode migration at the moment. We were discussing parameters in the expdp's par file. And I did ask my colleagues after doing some research on MOS. And here are the results of my "research": MOS Note 377218.1 has a nice example showing a data pump export of a partitioned table with DELETEs on that table as inconsistent Background:Back in the old 9i days when Data Pump was designed flashback technology wasn't as popular and well known as today - and UNDO usage was the major concern as a consistent per default export would have heavily relied on UNDO. That's why - similar to good ol' exp - the export won't operate per default in consistency mode To get a consistent data pump export with expdp you'll have to set: FLASHBACK_TIME=SYSTIMESTAMPin your parameter file. Then it will be consistent according to the timestamp when the process has been started. You could use FLASHBACK_SCN instead and determine the SCN beforehand if you'd like to be exact. So sorry if I had proclaimed a feature which unfortunately is not there by default - Mike

• Algorithm for dynamically calculating a level based on experience points?

  One of the struggles I've always had in game development is deciding how to implement experience points attributed to gaining a level. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to gaining a level in many of the games I've played, so I assume they have a static dictionary table which contains experience points vs. the level. e.g. Experience Level 0 1 100 2 175 3 280 4 800 5 ...There isn't a rhyme or reason why 280 points is equal to level 4, it just is. I'm not sure how those levels are decided, but it certainly wouldn't be dynamic. I've also thought about the possibility of exponential levels, as not to have to keep a separate lookup table, e.g. Experience Level 0 1 100 2 200 3 400 4 800 5 1600 6 3200 7 6400 8 ...but that seems like it would grow out of control rather quickly, as towards the upper levels, the enemies in the game would have to provide a whopping amount of experience to level -- and that would be to difficult to control. Leveling would become an impossible task. Does anyone have any pointers, or methods they use to decide how to level a character based on experience? I want to be fair in leveling and I want to stay ahead of the players as not to worry about constantly adding new experience/level lookups.

• Will BIOS boot mode Ubuntu install be able to boot when firmware "Fast Boot" is "Ultra Fast"?

  I have an AsRock mainboard with UEFI BIOS P1.50 02/14/2014. The firmware "Fast Boot" option is set to "Fast", Boot Option #1 is set to "AHCI P4: OCZ-VERT...": this is BIOS not UEFI boot. This boot disk has an MBR partitioning scheme (# parted -l | grep Partition\ Table:). Therefore Ubuntu 14.04 is installed in BIOS/CMS (Grub-PC) mode. The Ubuntu boot process ends in a text console (no GUI). There is no external graphics card in use. The stock Ubuntu kernel is replaced with Ubuntu supplied mainline 3.16.0-031600rc6-generic. dmesg outputs lines containing BIOS, like: SMBIOS 2.7 present Calgary: detecting Calgary via BIOS EBDA area Calgary: Unable to locate Rio Grande table in EBDA - bailing! [Firmware Bug]: ACPI: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found The ASRock BIOS it selves display this help text for "Ultra Fast - Fast Boot": Ultra Fast mode is only supported by Windows 8 and the VBIOS must support UEFI GOP if you are using an external graphics card. Please notice that Ultra Fast mode will boot so fast that the only way to enter this UEFI Setup Utility is to Clear CMOS or run the Restart to UEFI utility in Windows. Assumptions: I suspect after changing UEFI setting "Fast Boot" to "Ultra Fast" that the machine will no longer boot into Ubuntu's console. I expect when first exchanging "Grub-pc" with "Grub-efi", that the machine will still be able to boot to a grub menu (thus allowing to change the "Fast Boot" setting back to "Fast" without clearing CMOS). Are these two "Fast Boot" assumptions correct, and/or, may I expect Ubuntu 14.04 running mainline kernel 3.16rc6 and Grub-efi to still boot to console after enabling UEFI Ultra Fast Boot?

• Broadcom BCM4313 working, but terribly slow

  Hi all, I've installed ubuntu on a Asus 1015 netbook. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless adapter, which i had to install with the Additional Drivers application. It apparently installed fine and connects to our wireless network, but it only works at a "funny" speed range that goes from 367Bytes to a peak of 3Kb in its best moments. I know for sure the problem is neither the network nor the hardware. Network speeds are normal under windows on this laptop and in other computers with ubuntu aswell. lspci says the card is a BCM4313 model, but the Addittional Drivers Manager says these packecege contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, and BCM4322 based hardware seems like it installed the wrong driver... Is there anything I can do? I'm not concerned about compiling the driver or stuff like that, but I'm not sure on where to start... any help or guidance will be very, very appreciated.

• Internal hard drive, can't format

  I cannot format anymore the hard drive of my laptop. Here is how I proceed: I am starting my computer with a USB live drive (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx). Then I start disk utility and try to format the hard drive - I choosed to format the Master boot record but I get the following error: Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sda: Input/output error If I try to delete partitions I get the following error Error erasing: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_del_partition: device_file=/dev/sda, offset=32256 Entering MS-DOS parser (offset=0, size=30005821440) MSDOS_MAGIC found looking at part 0 (offset 32256, size 4096157184, type 0x83) new part entry looking at part 1 (offset 10618836480, size 8414461440, type 0x83) new part entry looking at part 2 (offset 19033297920, size 1077511680, type 0x82) new part entry looking at part 3 (offset 20110809600, size 9895011840, type 0x07) new part entry Exiting MS-DOS parser MSDOS partition table detected got it got disk got partition - part-type=0 Error: Input/output error during write on /dev/sda ped_disk_commit_to_dev() failed If I try to install ubuntu frrom the usb on the hard drive and choose erase and use the entire disk I get the error message Input/output error during write on /dev/sda For side infos I have at the moment 4 partitions on my hard drive: /dev/sda1 (ext2) /dev/sda2 (ext2) /dev/sda3 (swap) /dev/sda1 (ntfs) + /dev/sda (unlocated Space) My ultimate goal is to reinstall ubuntu and have only 2 partitions... • Cut in excel doesn't work, and copying tables from one program to another returns text

  My excel 2007 on Windows 7 operating system seems to have a probelm with regular cut function. when I highlight cells I want to cut and press cut (either on keyboard shortcut Ctrl+x, Home menu cut command, or from the right-click menu) cells start flashing for a split second and after that they only turn normal. When I want to paste them, they past as if copy function was used. If I try to rightclick to use function "insert cut cells" it is not one of the offered options at all. On my home computer I have same combination, Excel 2007 on windows 7 and it works just fine. COuld the problem be due to 64-bit win7 version at my job, and 32-bit version at home? Another problem is when I copy table from excel to word, in word pasting results in unformatted text instead of table as it was in excel. Did someone have such problems and can offer a solution? Thanx a lot.

• Atheros 922 PCI WIFI is disabled in Unity but enabled in terminal - How to get it to work?

  I am trying to get my PCI Wireless Atheros 922 card to work. It is disabled in Unity: both the network utility and the desktop (see screenshot http://www.amisdurailhalanzy.be/Screenshot%20from%202012-10-25%2013:19:54.png) I tried many different advises on many different forums. Installed 12.10 instead of 12.04, enabled all interfaces... etc. I have read about the aht9 driver... The terminal shows no hw or sw lock for the Atheros card, nevertheless, it is still disabled. Nothing worked so far, the card is still disabled. Any help is much appreciated.   I've just taken an existing XP Pro 32 bit system that had only 0.5GB of memory installed and maxed it out to 4GB. The BIOS reports the 4GB ram however when XP is booted and I look at the computer properties only 2GB of RAM is reported. Can anyone explain this? Before we go up any blind allys the /3GB switch is not the answer here, I have no need for a single process to use more the 2GB of memory. I'm wondering if the the 32 bit XP Pro is deliberately limited to 2GB. I seem to remember seeing an excellent table on a Microsoft site listing all the various SKUs of Windows and what each one was limited to. However I can't seem to find that table now.

Another laptop with U12.04 does find one. What do I do?
