  I have a simple view in my MSSQL database. It consists of the following fields: report_id INT ym VARCHAR -- YYYY-MM keyword VARCHAR(MAX) visits INT I can easily get the top 10 keyword hits with the following query: SELECT TOP 10 * FROM top_keywords WHERE ym BETWEEN '2010-05' AND '2010-05' ORDER BY visits DESC Now where it gets tricky is where I have to get the top 10 records for each report_id in the given date range (ym BETWEEN @start_date AND @end_date). How would I go about getting the top 10 for each report_id? I've stumbled across suggestions involving the use of ROW_NUMBER() and RANK(), but have been vastly unsuccessful in their implementation.

• Importing CSV with line breaks in Excel 2007

  I'm working on a feature to export search results to a CSV file to be opened in Excel. One of the fields is a free-text field, which may contain line breaks, commas, quotations, etc. In order to counteract this, I have wrapped the field in double quotes ("). However, when I import the data into Excel 2007, set the appropriate delimiter, and set the text qualifier to double quote, the line breaks are still creating new records at the line breaks, where I would expect to see the entire text field in a single cell. I've also tried replacing CR/LF (\r\n) with just CR (\r), and again with just LF (\n), but no luck. Has anyone else encountered this behavior, and if so, how did you fix it? TIA, -J

• How to detect if breaking an edge will make a graph disjoint?

  I have a graph that starts off with a single, root node. Nodes are added one by one to the graph. At node creation time, they have to be linked either to the root node, or to another node, by a single edge. Edges can also be created and deleted (one by one, between any two nodes). Nodes can be deleted one at a time. Node and edge creation, deletion operations can happen in any arbitrary order. OK, so here's my question: When an edge is deleted, is it possible do determine, in constant time (i.e. with an O(1) algorithm), if doing this will divide the graph into two disjoint subgraphs? If it will, then which side of the edge will the root node belong? I'm willing to maintain, within reasonable limits, any additional data structure that can facilitate the derivation of this information. Maybe it is not possible to do it in O(1), if so any pointers to literature will be appreciated.

  On SQL Server, the sys.objects table includes "Type" and "Type_Desc" attributes. There isn't a constraint on sys.objects that points me to table of these, and sys.types contains data types. I've searched SQL BOL but haven't found it. Any help would be appreciated. EDIT: Some DBs use only a subset of these types. For example, if I have a database with no views, when I query Sys.Objects as above, there are no "V" rows in the results. I am looking for a list of all possible types and descriptions used by SQL Server.

• How do I arbitrarily reorder lines in a text file using a Unix shell?

  I've got a text file with an arbitrary number of lines, e.g.: one line some other line an additional line one more here I'd like to write a script to reorder those lines based on a given order. e.g. An input of 2 1 3 4 would swap the first and second lines. An input of 3 1 2 4 would put the 3rd line first, the 1st line second, the 2nd line third and keep the 4th line fourth. I could hack something together, but I'm wondering if there's an elegant solution? I can use either bash or ksh.

• getting rid of repeated customer id's in mysql query

  I originally started by selecting customers from a group of customers and then for each customer querying the records for the past few days and presenting them in a table row. • Generic object load function for scala

  I'm starting on a Scala application which uses Hibernate (JPA) on the back end. In order to load an object, I use this line of code: val addr = s.load(classOf[Address], addr_id).asInstanceOf[Address]; Needless to say, that's a little painful. I wrote a helper class which looks like this: import org.hibernate.Session class DataLoader(s: Session) { def loadAddress(id: Long): Address = { return s.load(classOf[Address], id).asInstanceOf[Address]; } ... } So, now I can do this: val dl = new DataLoader(s) val addr = dl loadAddress(addr_id) Here's the question: How do I write a generic parametrized method which can load any object using this same pattern? i.e val addr = dl load[Address](addr_id) (or something along those lines.) I'm new to Scala so please forgive anything here that's especially hideous.

• SQL Query taking too long

  I am trying to optimize the SQL query listed below. It is basically a search engine code that retrieves products based on the products name. It also checks products model number and whether or not it is enabled. This executes in about 1.6 seconds when I run it directly through the phpMyAdmin tool but takes about 3 seconds in total to load in conjunction with the PHP file it is placed in. I need to add a category search functionality and now that is crashing the MySQL server, HELP! • Do I need something more to run NUnit under any directory?

  I have NUnit installed at this directory. C:\Program Files\NUnit 2.5.5\bin\net-2.0 When I try to run my unit test (mut.dll) in some random directory. I get the following error. I have to copy the mut.dll under the NUnit directory in order to run it. ProcessModel: Default DomainUsage: Single Execution Runtime: net-2.0 Could not load file or assembly 'nunit.framework, Version=2.5.5.10112, Culture=n eutral, PublicKeyToken=96d09a1eb7f44a77' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. What's wrong? Is there anything that I have to configure to run NUNit under any directory?

The problem is that before running the script from my JAVA application using ScriptEngine i want to get the names of all the variables! Because i should know which variables are required for the script to run... I know that a regular expression would do the job but i amnt sure... Please i somebody could help me figure out the java regexp to get the variables i would really appriciate it..

• Get the size of a Silverlight window

  Hey! I'm creating a Silverlight 4 Out Of Browser application. I have my MainPage that will be the "central" application. I want to be able to display another Control next to the MainPage, by using a Popup and I want it to be displayed right next to the MainPage. How can I get the coordinates of the upper right corner of the MainPage at each moment? (Beware that this MainPage can be moved all over the screen and hence I will need to dynamically get the corner coordinates, in order to display my popup right next to the main window).   While the NSCurrentLocaleDidChangeNotification perfectly makes sense on Mac OS X, I don't see how you can possibly receive it on iPhone OS. In order to change the locale, you have to quit the running application, then change it in Settings ? General ? International ? Region Format. At that point, your app is not running, so how could it receive the notification? I first thought this notification was leftover from the Mac OS X documentation, but then I found this in Apple Push Notification Service Programming Guide: The application might send its provider the preferred language every time the user changes something in the current locale. To do this, you can listen for the notification named NSCurrentLocaleDidChangeNotification and, in your notification-handling method, get the code identifying the preferred language and send that to your provider. So, how do you trigger this notification on iPhone OS?

  Hello, We need to write software that would continuously (i.e. new data is sent as it becomes available) send very large files (several Tb) to several destinations simultaneously. Some destinations have a dedicated fiber connection to the source, while some do not. Several questions arise: We plan to use TCP sockets for this task. What failover procedure would you recommend in order to handle network outages and dropped connections? What should happen upon upload completion: should the server close the socket? If so, then is it a good design decision to have another daemon provide file checksums on another port? Could you recommend a method to handle corrupted files, aside from downloading them again? Perhaps I could break them into 10Mb chunks and calculate checksums for each chunk separately? Thanks.

  Scenario: I have a fairly generic table (Data), that has an identity column. The data in this table is grouped (lets say by city). The users need an identifier in order for printing on paper forms, etc. The users can only access their cites data, so if they use the identity column for this purpose they will see odd numbers (e.g. a 'New York' user might see 1,37,2028... as the listed keys. Idealy they would see 1,2,3... (or something similar) The problem of course is concurrency, this being a web application you can't just have something like: UserId = Select Count(*)+1 from Data Where City='New York' Has anyone come up with any cunning ways around this problem?

• ASP.NET MVC 2 Client Side Validation doesn't work as advertised in VS2010

  In VS2010 and ASP.NET MVC 2, it seems that client-side validation (JQuery Futures or the stock option) doesn't quite work as advertised. I'm noticing that "tabbing off" a validated element will not invoke the client-side validation as promised. For a required field, you have to tab into the element, enter something, then remove it completely, in order to trigger the required validation. That's not really what I'm after here, and I'm hoping it's just a configuration issue on my side. How do I get the validation effects from previous versions so that a previous value isn't necessary (without having to modify the client-side scripts if possible)?

• Saving object state on Java without using external memory

  Good day. I know that in order to save object state in Java I should use serialization. But in every single topic about serialization states that I must save my object somewhere (disk, network). My problem is that I'm not allowed to do so. I need a way to save and recover object state without writing it on "external" memory. Maybe to save it on heap or stack... Please don't offer to clone it, I'm not allowed to do so as well. Thanks.

  I am using a struct to pass to an unmanaged DLL as so - [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct valTable { public byte type; public byte map; public byte spare1; public byte spare2; public int par; public int min; public byte[] name; public valTable() { name = new byte[24]; } } The code above will not compile because VS 2005 will complain that "Structs cannot contain explicit parameterless constructors". In order to pass this struct to my DLL, I have to pass an array of struct's like so valTable[] val = new valTable[281]; What I would like to do is when I say new, the constructor is called and it creates an array of bytes like I am trying to demonstrate because the DLL is looking for that byte array of size 24 in each dimension. How can I accomplish this?

• When is it a good idea to use the CSS display property?

  I think I first learned of this property when I thought "I should put this list of items in a ul, but I want it to be laid out horizontally. I wonder if I can do that with CSS?" When I googled this, I found a couple of sites suggesting that I create a CSS rule that would change the value of the display property of the li elements to inline. I've also seen the suggestion that a div (or other block element) be given display: table-cell in order to force the vertical align property to work. These techniques seem kind of hacky. Does that make sense? This might not be a good analogy, but it seems like trying to ride a car as if it were a motorcycle. Yeah, I could replace the steering wheel with handle bars, wear a helmet, and remove all the passenger seating, but how the heck is a car going to drive on two wheels??

• Django m2m adding field in the secondary table

  I have a model in wich i'm using m2m Django ORM feature, in order to create an aditional table to hold my 'classrom members'. My problem is: the membership to a classroom must be accepted by the invited one, so i need a boolean field :1=accepted, 0=refused/unseen yet.   Lets assume i am a game and i have a global int* that contains my health. A game trainers job is to modify this value to whatever in order to achieve god mode. I've looked up tutorials on game trainers to understand how they work, and the general idea is to use a memory scanner to try and find the address of a certain value. Then modify this address by injecting a dll or whatever. But i made a simple program with a global int* and its address changes every time i run the app, so i don't get how game trainers can hard code these addresses? Or is my example wrong? What am i missing?
