• Kubuntu 11.10 very slow during file I/O

  After updating to Kubuntu 11.10, my file I/O performance has slowly just gotten worse and worse. It is to the point where I'm getting 1 MB/s write/read speeds to the drive. If I download something, the whole machine becomes unresponsive for at times up to 30 seconds. This usually causes a timeout in the download and the download then stops. Even extracting archive files, while extracting the computer is just unusable on top of the terrible read/write speeds. It isn't the drive as I have Windows installed as well and when I boot to it I have no issues with the drive. I did not have this issue using Kubuntu 11.04 and am thinking of downgrading. However, I'd much rather help out the Ubuntu community by working through these issues. I'm starting to lean towards the new Linux Kernel is just not working well with file handles. During file I/O my system usage does pick up, but it is not 100% CPU usage. My system is as follows. • Unable to install Android for Windows 7 because JDK is not found

  I have JDK SE7u4 installed in windows 7. I tried to install Android on Windows 7 using the installer_r18-windows.exe but no avail. The setup window showed the message saying that the Java SE JDK not found and ERROR: Failed to find Java version for C:\Windows\System32\java.exe The system cannot found the file specified. If you believe you have a JDK installed and it was not properly recognized, simply set an environment variable JAVA_HOME to point to it I right clicked on Computer Properties Advanced System Settings Environment variables. I created a NEW system variable called JAVA_HOME and set the value as C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_04\bin or C:\Windows\System32\java.exe. I ran the installer again — the same error message still appeared.

• Missing 16:10 resolutions with Nvidia drivers (Can't add resolutions)

  Hello, I have a laptop with a Nvidia 9650M GT and used the drivers that Seven brought me. It works fine but Metro 2033 tells me that i have to upgrade my drivers to play the game. So i did it. But since i did a clean install of the new Nvidia drivers, i just have 1440*900 or 4:3 resolutions. I usually played with 1280*800 or 1184*740 (for performance issue) With the "old" drivers i was able to create custom resolution (1184*740) in Nvidia control panel but now when i try it tells me that "my monitor cannot support this resolution". When i insist, it works but soon as i shut down my computer i have to recreate it.. Do anyone have a fix ? Thank you

• Copying files from Public folder to C: takes a minute, even though they are same hard drive and same

  I have a big file, like 2GB, and would like to copy it from Network -> Bookroom -> Users -> Public (this is the computer in the bookroom in the house) to c:\myfiles and they are actually on the SAME hard drive (and same partition). But copying still takes a minute or so? I thought if on the same hard drive and partition, then it is a "move" and it should take 2, 3 seconds only. that public folder also is \\Bookroom\Users\Public

• Why will Screenshot not show up in Dash?

  I'm relatively new to Ubuntu, and am running into a problem I've not seen before. This is on an Ubuntu 12.04 system. I can't find Screenshot. I'm trying to take a shot of a screen from a web page, go to Dash, type in Screenshot, and nothing shows up. I've done this many times before, but suddenly Screenshot is not found. I downloaded an app called Shutter, it seems to have installed just fine, but like Screenshot, I don't know how to find it. Dash reveals nothing. In Dash, I've noticed that I have no applications showing up in response to a search. For instance, I can type Firefox, and get no results either, even though I'm using Firefox to submit this question. Is there something I can do to get Dash to show applications? Search results show only files and folders, and downloads. I did find one answer on Ask Ubuntu, which gave the following instructions: None of these fixes worked for me. But after more searching: rm ~/.cache/software-center -R worked like a charm. I did need to run: unity --reset & afterwards though, for the changes to take effect within dash, but the software center just started working straightaway. However, when I issued the unity --reset & command, it resulted in an internal error, and I'll have to reboot in order to reset my computer (which fortunately is allowing me to complete this question). So I'm still wondering why applications won't show in Dash, and will appreciate any help.

• Accessing second hard drive

  So I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my computer. I installed it on my 60gb SSD hard drive, and in the installation it never acknowledged the existence of my second hard drive. The hard drive that I keep all my files on, and which I want to make my home folder if I can, is a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB cache (WD1002FAEX). I've read the following: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount but honestly cannot work out how to access the hard drive from my Ubuntu installation. I did have Windows 7 64-bit prior to installing Ubuntu. I have backed up all the files on the hard drive, but if I could just access them straight off that would be super cool. Does anyone know how I can use the second hard drive?   A number of application servers started erroring out in my domain. Troubleshooting led me to a missconfiguration of NTP. I fixed the issue, but I don't know how the issue arose in the first place. The only errors I can find are System Error: 1097 Source: useenv System Error: 1058 Source: useenv System Error: 1030 Source: useenv System Error: 1000 Source: mmc How else can I find out why NTP started acting up on my domain? Is there any troubleshooting steps to diagnose why my DC started pulling from a random timeserver with the wrong time? EDIT: Current issue actually remains: the two 2003 DCs are not syncing with the PDC (a 2k8 box). w32tm /resync -- The computer did not resync because no time data was available.

• Will I have internet connection issues next day, if I unplug router at night?

  I did this regularly a few years ago and used to feel like I was 'being punished' by the Interent svc provider for disabling access to my computer, because trying to re-connect the next day became a constant pain. I have the same linksys router, a comcast modem, and hi-speed broadband through their LAN. Question: who or what is at fault for lousy internet connections, slow connections, or no connections: (everybody's tech dept. blames everybody else) The router? 10 year olds, maybe obsolete? The modem? came with the service plan - can connect three devices on a sharedconnection. The ISP: I read they not only even control and completely regulate bandwidth usage, but they also ration it!! (true?) So can I safely 'pull the plug' each night for security or not? thnx

  Is there a way to sign up a large group of skype names at once? is there a way to enable the users to be given a skype username based on their own e-mail addresses? What I would like to do is roll out skype in an office in every county in UK with a pre defined username such as 'mycompanyname-warwickshire', 'mycompanyname-bedfordshire' and so on. Our users are only basic computer users, so I would ideally like this done with as least fuss as possible for them! • accessing live usb files from new hd ubuntu install

  After my live USB (ubuntu 12.04 lts) refused to boot, I proceeded to install the same Ubuntu version on the laptop hard drive (a dual boot next to Win xp). This all went well without a hitch. Previous to this, I spent several weeks enjoying and exploring ubuntu from the usb pendrive. During this time I changed lots of settings and customized Firefox and more. Now, I'd like to import the home folder from the usb drive into the new install home folder on the hard disk, which is the purported folder that holds all those special settings to my knowledge. Unfortunately and only being familiar with Windows file systems, the view of the usb file system from the new hdd install is totally perplexing. I can't find anything that looks anywhere close to the original file system. More, I can't find any of the files I had created and stored there, like the LibreOfficeCalc file that has all my passwords (this one is really discouraging) that was stored on the ubuntu desktop. Help me find this file alone and I'll bow down with full apologies to any and all computer gods. Being able to import all those customizing settings into the new install would be a major bonus also, but hey, I'm not greedy. I'll take the passwords file and be happy! And humble! I would be very grateful for some clear, understandable help on this. Thanks

• Is it possible to code on two different computers simultaneously?

  I want to work with another programmer and I want the source code to be live in real-time on both of our screens. Is this possible on the Mac OS x or Linux? We're going to be using OS X but occasionally we might need to add an Ubuntu computer too. Is there a way I can do this using ssh, any shell based program, or even a good GUI? I thought Coda might be capable of this but it's not really working. Anyone ever do this? I'm not look for a git/svn/or any other version control system. This is more of a live coding session. :)

• Windows XP Activation failed, now what?

  I have a computer with (presumably unlicensed) Windows XP. The activation (over the internet) failed, and I now I cannot get into Windows. After calling Microsoft, it seems like I will have to reinstall everything and install a freshly bought operating system. What are my options here? Is it worth trying the millions of keys and key generators out there? EDIT: I have no way of contacting the manufacturer (it's a no-name box, definitely not Dell, HP or IBM). Would there actually be a key supplied with my version of XP? If its not genuine, wouldnt I just have any old key? And that key would fail activation any way?

• Chipset GPU causes a massive slowdown

  My AMD Radeon HD 7700 recently broke (fan stopped working and GPU overheated), and now I'm running on internal chipset graphics, and it causes a massive slowdown of the whole PC. I've changed the graphics memory from 32MB (minimum) to 256MB (highest), and it hasn't made any difference whatsoever. I'm using Windows Aero, and disabling it should have made a small difference, but it didn't; the whole PC is still slow. I know that it's not the computer build, because I built it myself, and it was a lot faster when it had the AMD Radeon HD 7700 in it, which is the reason why I believe it's the internal chipset graphics that are causing the problem. Is this behavior normal? I don't have the cash right now to go out and buy a new dedicated GPU. I'm using an ASRock N68C-GS FX motherboard with an AMD FX 4100 (overclocked to 4.3GHZ), with 4GB RAM. The overclock was an attempt to resolve this issue, and it isn't related to this issue that the integrated graphics is causing a slowdown.

• Asus laptop not retaining Aero theme when unplugged

  The problem i'm having occurs when i unplug my laptop, it disregards several elements of my theme. The taskbar becomes unlocked. My desktop background is turned white. The transparency on my windows goes away. I can fix these things by running the Aero trouble shooting utility, which mentions something about the color bit depth These are these specs for the computer: Asus Laptop / Intel® Pentium® Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory Model: X54H-BD3MA SKU: 4005394 I'm sure there are duplicates of this, just not sure whick one refers to me.   Recently I expanded LAN in my office from 3 to 10 computers. Structure star topology, one ADSL Modem connected to One Switch which is again connected to 10 computers. Also we have Wifi device Netgear which is connected from switch. ADSL Modem acts as the DHCP Server, all the system will have default gateway IP (ADSL Modem's IP) Network latency is now become very high, All the chat severs disconnect often like google talk, skype etc, also internet become very very slow. when all the computer turned on. We have 4 Mbps Download and 100 Kbps upload Net speed. Its look like ADSL Modem cannot able to handle all the connections. I tried to setup a system as default gateway which will connect to modem, not sure how to do this. Please advice on this.

• Help accessing Beagle over serial with Minicom/GTKTerm

  I am trying to access a brand new Beagle Board from Ubuntu or Mac over serial using the setup seen here: http://specialcomp.com/beagleboard/RevC1.htm I got Minicom and GTKTerm installed on the Ubuntu box. I set up the correct baud rate, turned off flow control, and have tried ttyUSB0 and ttyS0. Once minicom is configured properly, I should just see the init text from the board appear if I have minicom open in terminal while I plug in the board, correct? dmesg shows ttyUSB0 on the computer has been connected to ttyS0 on the beagle.

• IRQ Conflicts Causing Video Card and Boot Problems?

  tl;dr - I have 4 devices sharing 1 IRQ. Is this bad and how do I tell the BIOS to stop it? Background: I have an old Dell GX280 dual Pentium 4 that I (semi) resurrected last weekend with an installation of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything was going fine the first several hours until a problem that plagued me when WinXP was on that machine happened -- it froze. Completely froze. None of the myriad of ways I have found here on askubuntu helped me to regain control except a long-press of the power button to shut it off. Clearly, this wasn't a software/WinXP issue. After much googling, I found that hardware conflicts can often cause this sort of total lock-up and with all the odd blocks of yellow and flecks of color showing on my screen (both WinXP and Ubuntu) I figured my old GeForce 7600 was failing and causing me these odd issues. (A good canned-air dusting of the entire interior fixed the color fleck problem) Again, through much googling and numerous answers found on askubuntu, I somehow stumbled my way onto the lshw command. After going through it, line by line, I found that I have four devices sharing IRQ 16: eth0, wlan0, ide0 (DVD-RW), and my video card. In hindsight, I can recall weird instances of my Ethernet connection to another computer not working when I thought it should. I never full troubleshot those issues so it could be a coincidence. The other thing that has been plaguing me since installing Ubuntu (wasn't there during WinXP) has been periodic moments of my monitor getting no signal from Ubuntu during boot. The first couple days, it would disappear after the Dell boot screen and reappear at Ubuntu login. Now, it disappears after the Dell boot screen and doesn't return at all -- I have to hit F12 where I can load a safe mode version of Ubuntu and get more details like dmesg and lsdev. I also ran memtest86 overnight and woke up to zero errors, so failing RAM is out. Where do I go from here?

• Firefox (on windows) constantly consuming 10% CPU - is there an add-in to find the rogue tab?

  I often have many Firefox windows open, each with many tabs. Now and then one of the tabs will be running a web page that for some reason consumes lots of resources. Right now, I have a tab somewhere that is constantly consuming 10% of the CPU...which would be fine as my computer can easily handle that (see specs below...all other apps are responsive), but it seems to slow Firefox down....everything, everywhere is extremely laggy in Firefox, I can see pauses while I type this. Is there: - a way I can isolate separate instances (or even tabs) in FF into a separate process, so one rogue tab doesn't bog down FF across the entire system? - maybe an add-in that can either identify tabs consuming lots of CPU, or maybe a way to "shut down" activity on tabs you haven't used in a while?   Please vote to reopen. This is different from Can I use my laptop as a second monitor for my desk computer?, because that question is asking how to use the laptop screen as the secondary display, not as the only display. My PC's monitor just died and I'm not looking at buying a new monitor anytime soon. So I'm thinking of using my laptop's monitor for it. Both machines are running on Fedora linux. Edit: Both machines are connected to the same wireless network. PC needs to log in before it can connect to the network if I'm not mistaken.

• Cannot write, format, nor erase flash drive

  I have a 4gig flash drive, which I can read from but not write on, erase, nor format in any computer (tried in 7 different computers including xp, vista, and win7). I want to erase all the data inside because it is useless. Once I erase something, it erases it and gives me an error that it can't find the file. Once I refresh the folder, the file comes back. I tried holding Shift + Del. I also tried to use the command to format it in safe mode, but it says "access denied". I don't have a write protection button or whatever it is on my flash drive. It's just a simple small 4 gig one.

• Photo transfer problems from camera

  We have a digital camera (Cannon SX130 IS) which we often connect to the Ubuntu 12.10 desktop via USB in order to download the images. In past flavours of Linux (Mint 12 was most recent) it worked fine, however since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, the process fails after downloading a small number of the images. I can view the images which will be transferred in the preview window, and I can browse the camera file system to download the images manually, but if I just drag/drop the images over from camera to desktop, it freezes after 5-6 are copied over. I've been able to get around the problem by only copying 3-4 at a time, but when you have 100+ images to transfer, that gets really frustrating. Any advice on where I could start looking for answers, or how I could diagnose the source of the problem further? We have also had some issues with WireLess USB mice though it may not be related. I'm hoping my USB controller in the computer isn't dying... it's not that old. Also, it seems to work much better under Windows.

• How do I securely share / allow access to a drive?

  To simplify backing up a laptop (Windows Vista), I'm planning on sharing its C: drive (with password protection) and using that to back it up from another computer. What are the security implications of this? If I share C: with a reasonable password, how big is the risk of compromise if the system is e.g. inadvertently used on a public WLAN or similar? Background: I'm planning to use [Areca Backup][1] to back up two systems (Windows XP and Vista). My current plan is to install Areca on the XP box, and share the Vista system's C: as a shared folder, so the XP system can read it. Then I can set up the drive as a network drive and have Areca read it like a local drive. Of course, if you can think of a more elegant way of doing this, I'm open to suggestions.

It displays important information related to the business, I'd rather that random users that walk in can't just walk over to it and start using the computer with the same access rights as the user the monitoring software is running as. What I would like is if any time someone presses a button on the keyboard including alt-ctrl-delete all that would appear is a dialog asking for a password. Then I can click cancel and it will return to showing the data I want displayed. ClearLock doesn't work I tried it btw

• My laptop can connect to every wireless network except fios

  I have always been able to connect to every wireless router secured or unsecured wep or wpa. I had Fios installed and could not connect. Verizon suggested it was my computer and gave me an outside wirless drive to use, it worked. I got rid of fios and went back to comcast and threw out the drive, but now 2 years later, I am sitting at my friends house haveing the same problem. My tech savy friend told me it is a firewall setting or something in my antivirus software, but I disabled them both and still nothing works........Funny it is only FIOS
