    OK, so we all saw the lists of "funny" or "bad" comments. However, today, when maintaining an old stored proc, I stumbled upon a comment which I couldn't classify other than "refreshingly brutally honest", left by a previous maintainer around a really freakish (both performance and readability-wise) page-long query: -- Feel free to optimize this if you can understand what it means So, in the first (and hopefully only) poll type question in my history of Stack Overflow, I'd like to hear some other "refreshingly brutally honest" code comments you encountered or written.

  • Urgent help needed on How to update NSMutableDictionary. My code doesn't work.

    I've populated an array using. arrSettings = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:[self settingsPath]]; The file is a plist with the root as an array and then a dictionary with three three keys defined as number. I've also tried setting the keys to string. I display the values in the plist file on a view using. diaper = [[arrSettings objectAtIndex:0] objectForKey:@"Diaper Expenses"]; oil = [[arrSettings objectAtIndex:0] objectForKey:@"Oil Used"]; tree = [[arrSettings objectAtIndex:0] objectForKey:@"Wood Used"]; This code works fine, the values in the dictionary are assigned to the variables and they are displayed. The user can make changes and then press a save button. I use this code to extract the dictionary part of the array so I can update it. The assignment to editDictionary works. I've double checked the key names including case and that is correct. editDictionary = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] init]; editDictionary = [arrSettings objectAtIndex:0]; NSNumber *myNumber = [NSNumber numberWithFloat:diaperAmount]; [editDictionary setValue:myNumber forKey:@"Diaper Expenses"]; myNumber = [NSNumber numberWithFloat:oilAmount]; [editDictionary setValue:myNumber forKey:@"Oil Used"]; myNumber = [NSNumber numberWithFloat:treeAmount]; [editDictionary setValue:myNumber forKey:@"Wood Used"]; In this example I've used a nsnumber. But I've also tried the xxxAmount field as part of SetValue instead of creating a NSNumber. Neither implementation works. Several strange things happen. Sometimes the first two setvalue statements work, but the last setvalue fails with a EXC_BAD_ACCESS failure. Other times the first setValue fails with the same error. I have no idea why the first two sometimes work. I'm at a loss of what to do next. I've tried several implentations and none of them work. Also, in the debugger how can I display the editDictionary elements. I can see editDictionary, but I don't know how to display the individual elements.

  • Android playing Video data from a custom network stream?

    Does Android MediaPlayer can only work with file sources? I would like play media (video) from a network stream, but the stream comes in a non-standard protocol, so I have to somehow feed Android MediaPlayer with the data only. Is there anyway to do that? I found a few web pages suggesting using a temporary file for the buffered media data etc. but I would like to minimize the I/O usage as much as I can, so I'm looking for a API only solution if there is any? how about JNI? but looks like the permissions going to be an issue with that also.

  • C++ code which is slower than its C equivalent?

    Are there any aspects to the C++ programming language where the code is known to be slower than the equivalent C language? Obviously this would be excluding the OO features like virtual functions and vtable features etc. I am wondering whether, when you are programming in a latency-critical area (and you aren't worried about OO features) whether you could stick with basic C++ or would C be better?

  • How to safely let users run arbitrary Ruby code?

    I realize this sounds a little crazy, but I'm working on a project for which I need a server to run user-provided Ruby code and return the result. I'm looking to prevent something like this: system("rm -rf /") eval("something_evil") # etc... I'm sure there must be some reasonably safe way to do this, as it already exists at places like tryruby.org. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

    I was wondering if there is any library that can be used to represent SQL queries as objects in Java. In the code I have plenty of static variables of type java.lang.String that are hand written SQL queries. I would be looking for library having a nice fluent API that allows me to represent the queries as objects rather than strings.     I am trying to fetch an image from an IP camera using HTTP. The camera requires HTTP basic authentication, so I have to add the corresponding request header: URL url = new URL("http://myipcam/snapshot.jpg"); URLConnection uc = url.openConnection(); uc.setRequestProperty("Authorization", "Basic " + new String(Base64.encode("user:pass".getBytes()))); // outputs "null" System.out.println(uc.getRequestProperty("Authorization")); I am later passing the url object to ImageIO.read(), and, as you can guess, I am getting an HTTP 401 Unauthorized, although user and pass are correct. What am I doing wrong? I've also tried new URL("http://user:pass@myipcam/snapshot.jpg"), but that doesn't work either.

  • Custom components vs default components in GUI Design. Which is more practical? (.NET)

    Ok, so is it better to create my own components (Either inherit them from existing ones or creating them from scratch) or to use the ones that come by default? I'm asking this under the umbrella of scalability, overhead and other factors that my contribute on each of the choices. UPDATE: Sorry if I'm to vague. I don't really know how to explain myself better. Isn't it a good idea to inherit each default component? For example what if I'm to design a rather large application and for example i need to change the display format on a DateTimePicker. Wouldn't it better to think ahead and inherit it and use the inherited component instead of the defaults? But, wouldn't it add a lot of overhead in small applications?
