  • Cannot write DVDs anymore, but can read them and write CDs

    I'm stumped. I used to be able to write to DVDs and now I can't. I've tried different media (Memorex and Imations) I've tried different drives (internal and external) and even different OS's (Windows 7 and Linux Mint). Nothing I've done will work and it's a real problem not being able to burn DVD's. I'm on an Acer 6930 if that helps. Does anyone have any ideas?

In ubuntu 2.2 th login sound is heard through speaker but media player sound does not heard through speaker. i have done sudo alsamixer also, but it does not solve my problem & i also check pcm ,front sound . but speaker well running in other os . pl.solve my problem.

    I am going to be administering a small network of linux based workstations for a charity institution (not all have the same distro- some are ubuntu and some are fedora). Is there something in Linux that is similar to group policy in windows?. For example I would like to standardize the wallpapers - have only firefox as a browser - default VLC as the media player etc etc. Thank you, any suggestions are very appreciated.

  • SQL Server suddenly using only a small portion of CPU.

    We've got a Windows 2008 R2 server running SQL Server 2008. All of a sudden, the SQLServer process is refusing to go above 20% CPU usage. As of last week, when running a heavy query against the db it would rise to 100% usage as I would expect. We've had this server for a while and it seems strange that it would just suddenly have this limit. This limit is causing our queries to take a lot longer than they normally would. No one has (knowingly at least) made any changes to the server configuration. After a bit of investigation, I discovered the sys.dm_os_sys_memory view. This shows 'available physical memory is high' bu at the same time the available physical memory is 339552kb where as the total is 4193848kb. It is worth noting that this is a virtual server running on vmware. Is there a setting somewhere with in SQL Server that sets the maximum CPU usage? I've found the settings in resource governor, although this is currently off as it always has been. We have recently started using Spotlight for SQL Server by Quest Software. It's playback database was located on this server for a short time this morning, I first noticed the problem shortly afterwards, although I hadn't been doing any queries prior to this so I don't know if this is the point at which the problem began, however the database was working as expected on Friday afternoon.     I'm looking for some up-to-date information about postgresql internals, specifically the query optimizer. I've found this link (referred to in the "Further Reading" section of the 8.4 docs):- http://db.cs.berkeley.edu//papers/UCB-MS-zfong.pdf but it seems quite old. That in itself is not a problem, but I wanted to be sure that I have information that is relevant. Is this the best resource for understanding how postgresql processes queries (using plans, statistics etc.) or are there others?

  • Windows 2003 Server Caching

    We're experiencing almost everyday table index corruption on Windows Server 2003. We are running an old application which uses DBF/CDX tables. Everything was fine for ages, but 6 months after we've installed Advantage Database Server (which allows access to some tables to our website) we started to get index corruption problems. And we don't know whom to blame. We've tried to exclude all possible causes of this corruption. Now all users work in terminal mode - so no network problems can cause that, OpLocks also can't be a reason. We changed hardware, network cards, switches, reainstalled Server and even moved to new dedicated server. The only thing we can't exclude is ADS - because it should be working. Is that possible that local read/write caching that causes that problem? E.g. one user or process uses cached data, later another user/process changes it, and later the first user changes it again without knowing about the first change. Is it possible theoretically? Is it possible that this problem is caused by imporper file server or caching settings? Is it possible that normal users use non-cached data and ADS is using cached data? Or vice versa? Is it possible that each terminal user has its own cache? Or maybe the problem is about RAID caching somehow interfering with Windows Server caching? Or maybe there are some special settings for Windows Server for working with DBF tables that are being written simultaneously by several terminal users? Maybe there is a way to turn off caching for some certain files to check it? Sometimes we get index crash twice a day, sometimes everything is fine for 5 days in a row. Today only one user was working in the evening with the database (usually there are 30-50 users are working simultaneously on working hours). So it's almost zero load on server. , Syncronization with website is performed every 5 minutes during work hours and every 15 minutes in the evening and on weekend. We've done file access auditing and it shows that during website syncroniztions ADS server opens the table and index files for ReadEA and WriteEA though it performs only SELECT queries. ADS does UPDATE/INSERT queries but less freqently - not during regular synchronizations, but only when an order is placed by website visitor). Please help me. We are struggling with this problem for almost a year and still can't find any pattern or any clue about this problem.   • NFS server Windows 2008 - mounting via linux - input/output error help.

    I want to try mounting a folder with NFS - I set up the NFS sharing on a windows 2008 R2 server, specified hosts in the NFS permissions (by IP address) and mounted via /etc/fstab it mounts, but when I try to list the folder, I get 'input/output error' the owner/group on the local mount point look weird too? drwx------ 2 4294967294 4294967294 4096 2011-02-10 19:15 data/ I mounted in /etc/fstab as: 10.0.6.55:/share$ /media/data nfs soft,intr,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 What am I doing wrong?

    I'm trying to serve protected files using this directive in my nginx.conf: location /secure/ { internal; alias /home/ldr/webapps/nginx/app/secure/; } I'm passing in paths in the form: "/myfile.doc" and the file's path would be: /home/ldr/webapps/nginx/app/secure/myfile.doc I just get 404's when I access "http: //myserver/secure/myfile.doc" (space inserted after http to stop ServerFault converting it to a link) I've tried taking the trailing / off the location directive and that makes no difference. Two questions: How do I fix it! How can I debug problems like this myself? How can I get Nginx to report which path it's looking for? error.log shows nothing and access.log just tells me which url is being requested - this is the bit I already know! It's no fun trying things randomly without any feedback. Not sure what that signifies but it didn't work either!

    Hi, I've used TorrentSpy since 2004 and it does a pretty good job but it is very slow with torrent files that have hundreds or thousands of files. Does anyboy knows a better tool for the same job in XP? If you didn't know it, TorrentSpy show the data contained in a torrent file in a readable way: URL's tracker, number of files, its size, number of complete and incomplete downloaders, etc. Edit: What I want is something that can be used from explorer right-clicking in the torrent file, like MediaInfo does with media files.

  • Use a RAID Controller without drivers?

    Ordered an Adaptec 1420SA RAID card for my Debian Squeeze media server but didn't check to see if it was compatible, turns out it's not because it uses something called hostRAID which requires special drivers that aren't available for Debian. Could I still use the card as an ordinary controller and just use OS software RAID?? I'm not looking for speed, just need to mirror some drives that will be used for storage, the OS will reside on a disk connected to the server's onboard controller so the system won't be booting from any drives on the Adaptec controller.

    I'm seeing a hugh difference of free disk space between df -h and du -sxh / I've understood in my question Resolving unix server disk space not adding up that du -sxh / is a better estimation as to when I will run out of disk space. Having said that, assuming in my case the above sentence will prove to be wrong and I will run soon out of disk space, what will happen? I assume the MySQL will fail INSERT queries, but other than that, will I just need to delete some files or will it be a problematic situation?
