• aio_write on linux with rtkaio is sometimes long

  I'm using async io on linux with rtkaio library. In my tests everything works perfectly, but, in my real application i see that aio_write which is supposed to return very fast, is very slow. It can take more than 100 milis to write a 128KB to a O_DIRECT padded file. Both my test and the application use same I/O size, i check on the same file system (GFS). I added counting and i see that there are about 50% of async io operations that are short (shorter then 2 milis) and 50% that are long (longer than 2 milis). I also checked that the test and the application both use the same rtkaio library. I'm pretty lost, anyone any ideas where should i look? • Getting an empty response when calling CouchDB over ajax

  I'm new to CouchDB, so please bear with me. I have an instance of CouchDB running on a VM. I can access it just fine through the browser via futon or directly at: http://192.168.62.128:5984/articles/hot_dog Calling that URL in a browser returns the proper JSON. But, when I try to call that exact same URL via ajax, I get nothing: var ajaxUrl = 'http://192.168.62.128:5984/articles/hot_dog'; $.getJSON(ajaxUrl, null, function(data) { alert(data); }); Looking at the response header with Firebug shows me that the HTTP response was 200 and the content-length is the right size. Even the Etag matches with what is in CouchDB. But the response itself is empty! The URL is absolutely right; I've triple checked, and copy/pasted it directly (and besides it wouldn't give a 200 response if it weren't). I'm using jQuery 1.4.2, and CouchDB 0.8 What's going on?

• How the kernel gives seg. fault for a scenario like this?

  I have a doubt in accessing some invalid data. How will the OS cause segmentation fault for a scenario like this? Suppose a date segment has some 100 bytes. This will be mapped and a page table entry will be created. But the page size is 4K. Consider the data segment is aligned with this page boundary. So at first consider accessing a valid data within the 100 bytes. So now the page table entry is in TLB. Next if you try to access some invalid data between the 100 and 4K, the entry is there in page table and will it be allowed to access the invalid data??? Thanks, Bala

  If I have Perl module like package X; and an object like my $x = X->new (); Inside X.pm, I write an error handler for $x called handle_error, and I call it sub check_size { if ($x->{size} > 1000) { $x->handle_error (); return; } } is there any way to make handle_error force the return from its caller routine? In other words, in this example, can I make handle_error do return in check_size without actually writing return there?

• Image coding library

  Is there any good library for lossless image encoding/decoding that has compression rate more or less similar to PNG but decoding to raw RGB bitmap data would be much faster than PNG? Also alpha transparency is needed, but not essential because, alpha channel could be taken from separate image. Original problem lies in slowness of reading and decoding PNG files on iPhone using standard libraries. Obvious and the simples solution would have been storing raw RGB bitmap data, but then size of unpacked ipa is too large - 4 times larger than PNG files. So, I am trying to find some compromise solution.

  I'm using php gd lib 5.2.13 and tried to make a picture with imagettftext ($image, $color and $font are defined of course). imagettftext($image, 12, 90, 10, 20, $black, $font, "This.is_a test 123"); //image, font size, angle, x value, y value, color, font, text As you can see I want the angle to be 90°. The problem is that the text is not beeing rotated properly, e.g. the dots are at the top (and not at the bottom) of the text. I read that this is a common issue and has been fixed in php gdlib 5.3, But since I have 5.2.13 running on a webhost (...) is there a solution to rotate it properly with using gdlib 5.2.13? Thanks!

• Optimize SQL with Interbase

  I was inspired by the good answers from my previous question about SQL. Now this SQL is run on a DB with Interbase 2009. It is about 21 GB in size. SELECT DistanceAsMeters, Bold_Id, Created, AddressFrom.CityName_CO as FromCity, AddressTo.CityName_CO as ToCity FROM AddrDistance LEFT JOIN Address AddressFrom ON AddrDistance.FromAddress = AddressFrom.Bold_Id LEFT JOIN Address AddressTo ON AddrDistance.ToAddress = AddressTo.Bold_Id Where DistanceAsMeters = 0 and PseudoDistanceAsCostKm = 0 and not AddrDistance.bold_id in (select bold_id from DistanceQueryTask) Order By Created Desc There are 840000 rows with AddrDistance 190000 rows with Address and 4 with DistanceQueryTask. The question is, can this be done faster? I guess, the same query is run many times select bold_id from DistanceQueryTask. Note that I'm not interested in stored procedures, just plain SQL :)

• Decoration View *above* cells in UICollectionView

  I've got a decoration view showing the way I want, in my UICollectionView. The position and size is right. The decoration view stays at the frame I'm setting for it in my layout. But, I want the decoration view to be above the cells, not below them. I tried setting the zIndex property on the UICollectionViewLayoutAttributes for the decoration view, but this has no effect - I tried logging out the zindex of the cells, and they're all returning 0, and my decoration view's zIndex is set to 20. I'm guessing having decoration views above the cells is not supported, at least in UICollectionViewFlowLayout? Someone please confirm this, thanks! In the meantime, I'm going back to having a custom UIView subclass as a subview in the parent controller of the collection view and laying out the frame of it in the - (void) viewWillLayoutSubviews() method.

• [OpenGL] I'm having an issue to use GLshort for representing Vertex, and Normal.

  As my project gets close to optimization stage, I notice that reducing Vertex Metadata could vastly improve the performance of 3D rendering. Eventually, I've dearly searched around and have found following advices from stackoverflow. Using GL_SHORT instead of GL_FLOAT in an OpenGL ES vertex array How do you represent a normal or texture coordinate using GLshorts? Advice on speeding up OpenGL ES 1.1 on the iPhone Simple experiments show that switching from "FLOAT" to "SHORT" for vertex and normal isn't tough, but what troubles me is when you're to scale back verticies to their original size (with glScalef), normals are multiplied by the reciprocal of the scale. Then how do you use "short" for both vertex and normal at the same time? I've been trying this and that for about a full day, but I could only go for "float vertex w/ byte normal" or "short vertex w/ float normal" so far. Your help would be truly appreciated.

Why not logging everything at SQLServer, I am creating E-Commerce website, if SQL server down the website will be down anyway. but I am worry about temporally connection failure, what do u think? Why everyone like files, it can be in great size, too big to handle, or maybe I will create another file when a file is too big, and I can create a file with a date.   Imagine that HTML page is a game surface (see picture). User can have n number of boards (blue divs) on his page. Each board can be moved, re-sized, relabeled, created new and removed. Inside each board there are m number of figures (purple divs). Each of these user can move inside the board or to another board, re-size, change color and label, delete, add new. The goal of the game is not important, but let's say it is to rearrange figures in a certain way so that they disappear. But the goal of the programmer is to save the whole game surface in the database for every user of the site, and to load it later when he returns. So, how do I go about data exchange between client and the database? I'll give my idea in one of the answers.

Before switch to ftp i had this code $image=$database_row["image"];//image is store in database $file = fopen( "images/".$image_name, "w" ); fwrite( $file, $image); fclose( $file ); and was working fine, but now i have to use ftp. What am i missing.

• Preserve time stamp when shrinking an image

  My digital camera takes pictures with a very high resolution, and I have a PIL script to shrink them to 800x600 (or 600x800). However, it would be nice for the resultant file to retain the original timestamp. I noticed in the docs that I can use a File object instead of a name in PIL's image save method, but I don't know if that will help or not.   What is the best way to limit the amount of text that a user can enter into a 'textarea' field on a web page? The application in question is ASP .NET, but a platform agnostic answer is preferred. I understand that some amount of javascript is likely needed to get this done as I do not wish to actually perform the 'post' with that amount of data if possible as ASP .NET does have an upper limit to the size of the request that it will service (though I don't know what that is exactly). So maybe the real question is, what's the best way to do this in javascript that will meet the following criteria: -Must work equally well for both users simply typing data and copy/paste'ing data in from another source. -Must be as '508 compliance' friendly as possible.

• Paging doesn't work in the Joomla Article Manager in the admin section

  I inherited a Joomla site that is having a problem with the article manager in the admin section. The pagination doesn't work! If I click the page number, forward, back, or page size, nothing happens! So I found out that someone had previously installed the iJoomla SEO plugin, but it never worked so they removed it. I think it is incompatible with the version I have. I setup a local environment with almost the same setup (I have 5.2.11 vs the servers 5.2.13) with Wamp Server, and I found that some of the session variables are missing! When dumped via print_r(), the $_SESSION variable is missing the "com_content", "global", and "com_plugins" arrays! So I guess that is the reason that paging doesn't work, because the "com_content" array looks like it has paging info in it. (maybe I'm wrong) So I'm running Version 1.5.13 on PHP Version 5.2.13 Anyone know why this would happen? Thanks in advance!

  I'm having this same problem: How can I truncate a VARCHAR to the table field length AUTOMATICALLY in Derby using SQL? To be specific: CREATE TABLE A ( B VARCHAR(2) ); INSERT INTO A B VALUES ('1234'); would throw a SQLException: A truncation error was encountered trying to shrink VARCHAR '123' to length 2. that is already answered: No. You should chop it off after checking the meta-data. Or if you don't wanna check the meta-data everytime, then you must keep both your code and database in sync. But thats not a big deal, its a usual practice in validators. but my doubt is: isn't VARCHAR suppose to variate its size to fit the data? What's wrong with apache derby's VARCHAR?

• How can I efficiently group a large list of URLs by their host name in Perl?

  I have text file that contains over one million URLs. I have to process this file in order to assign URLs to groups, based on host address: { 'http://www.ex1.com' = ['http://www.ex1.com/...', 'http://www.ex1.com/...', ...], 'http://www.ex2.com' = ['http://www.ex2.com/...', 'http://www.ex2.com/...', ...] } My current basic solution takes about 600 MB of RAM to do this (size of file is about 300 MB). Could you provide some more efficient ways? My current solution simply reads line by line, extracts host address by regex and puts the url into a hash. • Change Titlewindow close button

  I'm working with Flex 3.4 SDK. I need to change the default close button image from a TitleWindow. So what I'm doing is defining a CSS selector, like this: TitleWindow{ close-button-skin: Embed('assets/close.png'); border-color: #FFFFFF; corner-radius: 10; closeButtonDisabledSkin: ClassReference(null); closeButtonDownSkin: ClassReference(null); closeButtonOverSkin: ClassReference(null); closeButtonUpSkin: ClassReference(null); } The problem is: the result image is totally squeezed beyond recognition. Probably because the image dimensions are 55x10 pixels (much wider than the default closebutton square-like dimensions) and flex forces it to fit that size. Would anyone know how to go about fixing that?
